Abstract
Introduction: Due to the importance of laser light penetration and propagation in biological tissues, many researchers have proposed several numerical methods such as Monte Carlo, finite element and green function methods. Among them, the Monte Carlo method is an accurate method which can be applied for different tissues. However, because of its statistical nature, Monte Carlo simulation requires a large number of photon pockets to be traced, so it is computationally expensive and time-consuming. Although other numerical methods based on the diffusion method are fast, they have two important limitations: first, they are not valid near the bounder of sample and source, and second, their...
Fuzzy real-time optimization of the Tennessee Eastman challenge process

Abstract
A Real-Time Optimization (RTO) strategy incorporating the fuzzy sets theory is developed, where the problem constraints obtained from process considerations are treated in fuzzy environment. Furthermore, the objective function is penalized by a fuzzified form of the key process constraints. To enable using conventional optimization techniques, the resulting fuzzy optimization problem is then reformulated into a crisp programming problem. The crisp programming problem is solved using both Sequential Quadratic Programming (SQP) and Heuristic Random Optimization (HRO) techniques for comparison purposes. The proposed fuzzy RTO strategy is demonstrated via the Tennessee Eastman benchmark process,...

Abstract
Recent research revisits pairwise-correlating data prefetching due to its extremely low overhead. Pairwise-correlating data prefetching, however, cannot accurately detect where data streams end. As a result, pairwise-correlating data prefetchers either expose low accuracy or they lose timeliness when they are performing multi-degree prefetching. In this letter, we propose a novel technique to detect where data streams end and hence, control the multi-degree prefetching in the context of pairwise-correlated prefetchers. The key idea is to have a separate metadata table that operates one step ahead of the main metadata table. This way, the runahead metadata table harnesses the degree of...

Abstract
A stochastic real time optimization (SRTO) which has an efficient result has been implemented on the Tennessee Eastman (TE) challenging problem. In this article a novel stochastic optimization method, the so-called heuristic random optimization (HRO) proposed by Li & Rhinehart is used which attempts to rationally combine features of both deterministic and random (stochastic) methods. Further, an on-line nonlinear identifier via extended Kalman filter (EKF) is used to supply the plant model for model-based optimization algorithm. Using the information obtained from EKF an on-line HRO is accomplished by a random search method whose search directions and steps are considerably reduced by some...

Abstract
In this paper real-time optimization of the Tennessee Eastman challenge process is accomplished in a fuzzy environment. This study focuses on violation of TE constraints in fuzzy environment and also violation of some additional constraints originated from operating mode of the plant. Furthermore the objective function is treated in fuzzy form. Results show a great reduction of operating cost, which is selected as the objective function of this study. The theory of fuzzy optimization, which is the main contribution of this paper, is to reformulate the fuzzy constraints and fuzzy objective function into a crisp programming problem and to solve it by a conventional method of optimization. The...

Abstract
On-line optimization for the base case of the Tennessee Eastman (TE) challenge problem is presented; furthermore, an interesting operating condition near base case has been obtained, which results in a lower cost function. The proposed method is based on the estimation of the internal states and the time varying parameters of the process model based on an Extended Kalman filter. The sequential quadratic programming method has been used to accomplish the non-linear programming (NLP) task. The objective function is the operational cost while the constraints are the reactor mass balance, safe operation of the process equipment, and the conditions that satisfy the product quality and flow. The...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Jafarzadeh, Fardin (Supervisor)
Abstract
In this investigation, a series of cyclic simple shear tests were carried out in order to evaluate dynamic parameters of Babolsar and Toyoura sand at levels of saturation 25, 50, 75 and 100%. 96 tests were conducted using SGI type cyclic simple shear device. The specimens were cylindrical, with 7cm diameter and 2.2 cm height. The tests were performed under both drained condition (constant-load) at levels of saturation 25, 50%, and undrained condition at levels of saturation 75, 100%. All tests were performed under vertical consolidation stress of 50 and 150 kPa, relative density of 30 and 70% and cyclic shear strain of 0.5, 5 and 10%. The tests were shear strain-controlled with an...

Abstract
This paper proposes Blenda, a dynamically-partitioned memory-cache blend architecture for giga-scale die-stacked DRAMs. Blenda architects the stacked DRAM partly as memory and partly as cache, and dynamically adjusts each part's size to workloads' demands. The memory part hosts hot data objects and serves requests to them efficiently (i.e., without metadata overheads). The cache part captures transient data and filters requests to bandwidth-limited off-chip DRAM. Blenda provides three key contributions: (i) Blenda partitions stacked DRAM's capacity in a workload-aware manner: different workloads enjoy different memory-cache configurations. (ii) Blenda is reactive: the configuration is...
Study of Light Propagation in Biological Tissues by Means of the Monte Carlo Simulation and Diffusion Method

Abstract
The tissue characteristics are important for all kinds of medical laser applications in order to understand the interaction mechanisms between light and tissue. Knowledge about light transport in tissue is essential for cancer treatment and cancer diagnostic techniques. By having the diffused reflectance of a tissue we can determine its optical characteristics. In this thesis we have solved the inverse process. That is, we compute the diffused reflectance of a turbid media with pre-determined optical parameters. This problem can be solved using two methods: Monte Carlo simulation and diffusion method. Since Monte Carlo simulation is computationally very expensive, it is not used in medical...
Theoretical study of high repetition rate short pulse generation with fiber optical parametric amplification [electronic resource]
, Article Journal of Lightwave Technology ; May 2012, Volume 30, Issue 9, PP. 1263-1268 ; Ariaei, A. M ; Jadidi, M. M ; Salehi, J. A ; Sharif Unversity of Technology
Abstract
In this paper, we study theoretically the generation of high repetition rate short pulses using fiber optical parametric amplification. We show that the pulse shape and duration depend on the signal location relatively to the pump frequency. We demonstrate that in order to get the shortest pulse width, the signal must be located at one of the extremities of the gain spectrum associated with the pump peak power. We derive the analytical expression of the pulse shape in this case and compare it to the exponential gain regime case. Using numerical simulations, we also analyze the impact of walk-off and pump phase modulation that is required to suppress Stimulated Brillouin Scattering and derive...

Abstract
This paper reports a polarization controllable and angle-insensitive perfect metamaterial absorber (PMA). The proposed PMA consists of periodically arranged asymmetric omega-shaped resonators made of metallic copper. The absorptivity was analyzed considering the microwave C-band from 4 GHz to 8 GHz. The proposed PMA shows an absorption peak with almost 100% absorptivity at 6.2 GHz. Also, wideband negative index of refraction is observed. Further, the absorber is inspected for the different rotation angles of the top metasurface (omega-shaped ring) along the optical axis, and obliquity of incidence angle for both TE and TM polarized waves. Moreover, surface electric field and surface current...

Abstract
In cloud computing, services play key roles. Services are well defined and autonomous components. Nowadays, the demand of using Fuzzy inference as a service is increasing in the domain of complex and critical systems. In such systems, along with the development of the software, the cost of detecting and fixing software defects increases. Therefore, using formal methods, which provide clear, concise, and mathematical interpretation of the system, is crucial for the design of these Fuzzy systems. To obtain this goal, we introduce the Fuzzy Inference Cloud Service (FICS) and propose a novel discipline for formal modeling of the FICS. The FICS provides the service of Fuzzy inference to the...

Abstract
In the study presented herein, a simple method for laboratory calcite cementation of a reconstituted gravelly sand was presented. This method was used to prepare cemented gravelly sand specimens, which have similar natural characteristics to alluvial deposit of the city of Tehran. The formation and distribution of calcite bonds, as well as the effectiveness of the presented calcite cementation method in increasing interparticle cohesion, as observed in weakly to moderately cemented soil in Tehran, were evaluated by means of chemical analysis, X-ray diffraction technique, and unconfined compressive strength tests. The cementation technique was used to prepare triaxial specimens with calcite...

Abstract
Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communication is an important type of communication in the Internet-of-Things (IoT). How to send data in these high-density communications using relay selection can help improve the performance of this type of communication in various applications. In addition, the possibility of simultaneous use of different Radio Frequency (RF) interfaces helps to use the spectrum more efficiently. In this work, we try to further use machine communication RF equipment and improve the average data rate of networks in some applications such as the IoT, which have their own bandwidth requirements. Therefore, we provide an optimization algorithm for relay selection as well as the...
