Political Conflicts, Uncertainty and Investment in Iran

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Habibpour Moghaddam, Ehsan (Author) ; Barakchian, Mahdi (Supervisor) ; Nili, Masoud (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
Investment is a variable that would determine the future status of the economy. Given the fact that the investment behavior consequences in the economy would appear in the long-term horizons, unlike most other state variables, such as inflation and exchange rates, it may not be a tangible variable. As a result, there may be fewer sensitivities toward it. However, looking at the evidence, it is observable that the level of investment in Iran has experienced a severe reduction since the early 2010s, and this decline in investment has remained stable in its trend. The real aggregate investment level in Iran at the end of the year 2018 was approximately equal to its level in the year 2002. There...

    Abstract
In the present work, the integration of production scheduling and process control in a multi-product CSTR reactor is addressed. In order to reduce the complexity of solving this integrated problem, in the scheduling layer, a reduced closed-loop model, named scale bridging model, based on neural network concept is used. In the control layer, a neural network-based controller is used to achieve control objectives such as tracking, stability and robustness against model uncertainty. In addition, the designed closed loop system is used to obtain offline setpoint-output data set in order to train neural network based scale bridging model. In a comparative study, both simultaneous and sequential...

Methane Conversion to Higher and Valuable Hydrocarbons by Non-thermal Plasma

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Habibpour, Mahdi (Author) ; Saddighi Bonabi, Rasoul (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Methane conversion into higher hydrocarbons has been investigated by non-thermal plasma. The most important advantages of utilizing this type of plasma are atmospheric pressure and ambient temperature of the operating system. Without any catalysts and with pure methane used as the feed gas, a stable 20 kilohertz spark discharge leads to an acetylene selectivity of 90.4 % with 54.5 % of methane conversion at a methane fow rate of 33 ml/min and a specific input energy of 54 kJ/L. Other components such as hydrogen, ethylene and ethane are also formed in the process as by-products. These remarkable results expose superiority of spark plasma in comparison with other types of non-thermal...

    Abstract
The capability level of rotary as well as first generation drilling operation could not be matched for deeply drilling programs. To reach that deep, the increasing in drill string length could also cause an additional constraint on hydraulic performance. The operation of slim hole drilling has significant potential to reduce well costs. This cost might be savings are especially important with increased demand for reduced capital finance under current economic conditions in the Iranian oil and gas industry. This savings achievement could be caused by use of smaller drilling rigs, work over rigs, reduced casing size, reducing requirement for drilling consumables and other costs associated with...

    Abstract
In recent years, growing interest in underbalanced drilling has resulted in the rapid development of its associated equipment technology, practices, and procedures. Underbalanced drilling is used to avoid lost circulation, formation damage, and decreasing weight on bit. However, the risk of wellbore collapse due to lake of hydrostatic mud pressure is high; therefore, using good geo-mechanical model may avoid wellbore instability problems. In order to evaluate the potential for wellbore instability, it is necessary to use an elastoplastic model to compute the stresses and strains around the bore hole. Furthermore, it should be mentioned that the laser drilling process depends extremely on the...

Genco's Bidding Strategy in Day-Ahead Energy Market Considering Demand Response

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Kazemi, Mostafa (Author) ; Ehsan, Mehdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Since 1980s the electricity market has been gradually evolving from a monopoly market into a liberalized one for encouraging competition and improving efficiency. This brings the opportunity for generation companies (Gencos) to make more profits while embracing more risks of not being dispatched. Therefore, it has become a core interest for the Gencos to develop optimal bidding strategies to maximize the profits and minimize the risks while participating in such a competitive market. Error of determining day-ahead electricity price is one of the sources of the risk. Energy price has a high impact on bidding strategy optimization process. So it should be determined with low error which is not...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mahmoodzadeh, Zahra (Author) ; Ehsan, Mehdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Losses are unavoidable in any parts of power systems, from generation to receiving nodes and occur in transmission and distribution networks. However, the main loss component is produced in distribution networks. Energy losses in distribution networks are about 70% of technological transport energy losses.
Energy losses in distribution networks are an important indicator for the planning and operation of the system. A fast, reliable and accurate energy loss calculation method is required for optimal operation of the distribution networks.
Energy loss depends on network's operating conditions. Loads values and loads factors are time variables; therefore, methods based on probability...

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Kharrati, Saeed (Author) ; Ehsan , Mehdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Electricity retailers are one of the power market entities which act as an intermediary between the producers in the wholesale market and the consumers in the retail side. The main task of a retailer in the power market is to set contract with the consumers to supply their electricity during a pre-specified time period and to participate in the wholesale market to supply the electricity needed by its costomers. Retailer’s contract with its customers may be a simple contract with a fixed pre-determined energy price or include some more complicated feathures such as involvement of a percent of green energy or variable price and demand response contracts. Moreover, retailer can supply its...
