Optical Communication Impairments Mitigation Using Interpretable Machine Learning

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Karami, Mahyar (Author) ; Pakravan, Mohammad Reza (Supervisor) ; Hadi, Mohammad (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
Optical impairments, as a challenging obstacle in optical communication systems, have been under deep attention of optical engineers in recent years. These impairments can be divided into two categories of linear and nonlinear impairments. Dispersion is a significant linear impairment leads to broadening of the optical signal and interference between transmitted symbols during detection. Nonlinear impairments such as cross-phase modulation (XPM) and self-phase modulation (SPM) also distort the transmitted signal through the fiber, causing interference at the receiver and degrading the system's performance. An appropriate solution for compensating optical fiber impairments is to utilize...

    , Article Journal of Solution Chemistry ; Volume 39, Issue 10 , October , 2010 , pp 1509-1519 Salari, H. (Hadi) ; Harifi-Mood, A. R. (Ali Reza) ; Elahifard, M. R. (Mohammad Reza) ; Gholami, M. R. (Mohammad Reza) ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
Solute-solvent and solvent-solvent interactions were investigated for binary mixtures of an ionic liquid (IL) 2-hydroxy ethylammonium formate as with methanol, ethylene glycol and glycerol. The physicochemical properties of the solvent mixtures at 25 °C, over the whole range of mole fractions, were determined using solvatochromic probes. High normal polarity ( ENT ) in the alcohol-rich region confirms solute-solvent interactions in this medium. Dipolarity/polarizability (π ∗) show a different trend to ENT with a positive deviation from ideal behavior in IL-glycerol mixtures. However, these deviations for other solvent mixtures are insignificant. Contrary to what is observed for ENT and π ∗,...

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Arghavani Hadi, Jamal (Author) ; Naghdabadi, Reza (Supervisor) ; Sohrabpour, Saeed (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Shape memory alloys (SMAs) are a type of smart materials which have unique features known as pseudo-elasticity, one-way and two-way shape memory eects. The interest in the mechanical behavior of SMAs is rapidly growing with the increasing number of potential industrial applications. The origin of SMA material features is a reversible thermo-elastic martensitic phase transformation between a high symmetry, austenitic phase and a low symmetry, martensitic phase. In most applications, SMAs experience general non-proportional thermo-mechanical loads. Thus, according to experimental observations, the so-called variant reorientation should be considered in the constitutive model development....

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Bagheri, Afsar (Author) ; Naghdabadi, Reza (Supervisor) ; Argavani Hadi, Jamal (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In Li-ion batteries, large volume changes of electrodes with high capacity, such as silicon electrodes during charging and discharging processes (insertion/extraction of lithium into/from the electrode), lead to restrictions on the use of this type of electrode. Given the very high capacity of silicon, predicting and modeling the behavior of silicon electrodes during electrochemical cycles is important and is also addressed in this thesis. First, using the theory of linear elasticity, relations are proposed that couple the diffusion of particles with small elastic deformation. The effect of hydrostatic stress on diffusion and stresses is investigated in lithiation processes. Then, the...

Analysis of Coupled Thermo-Mechanical Behavior of Shape Memory Alloys using Nonlinear Finite Element Method

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Tootian, Mohammad Hassan (Author) ; Naghdabadi, Reza (Supervisor) ; Arghavani Hadi, Jamal (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
Unique characteristic behavior of shape memory alloys (SMAs), known as shape memory effect (SME) and superelasticity (SE), make them an appropriate choice for innovative engineering. Design of SMA applications calls for development of constitutive models. To accurately predict SMA behaviors, employing a suitable model with low computational costs is required. In some experimental data, SMAs have coupling in mechanical and thermal behavior. Therefore, mechanical loading changes temperature of the material and variation in temperature affects the mechanical behavior as well. This behavior is called coupled thermo-mechanical effect. In SMA applications, since coupled thermo-mechanical behavior...
