, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Medi, Ali (Supervisor)
Abstract
Today, phased array antennas play important role in wireless communication systems. Utilizing optimum channel capacity, having better signal to noise ratio and, high data rate are the most important features of these systems. These systems are composed of several thousands of separated transceivers which provide possibility of directional electromagnetic radiation by changing the phase and the amplitude of the signal in each transceiver independently. So, the main components of such a system are amplifiers, phase shifters and, amplitude controllers. Also a high resolution phased array military radar system is another vital application of these systems at frequency band of 33-36 GHz.The...

Abstract
Sensors are among essential building blocks of any Cyber-Physical Systems (CPSs). Acquisition and processing of their sensory data contribute to the power consumption and computation load of the overall CPSs. For data acquisition, the conventional fixed frequency sampling in many such systems is sub-optimal since a sizable number of samples do not contain important information. In this work, we propose a Signal-Dependent Sampling (SDS) method and present its associated circuit implementation. Using the proposed SDS method, the number of retained samples is significantly reduced with little or negligible compromise in the quality of the (reconstructed) signal. The associated error and added...

Abstract
Given the emergence of the Internet of Things (IoT) Cyber-Physical Systems (CPSs) and their omnipresence, reducing their power consumption is among the major design priorities. To reduce the power consumption of such systems, we propose the use of a signal-dependent sampling method in a bottom-up fashion, which can lead to up to a 94% reduction in the overall system power with negligible or no loss in performance. Moreover, the proposed technique provides further flexibility for self-aware CPSs to dynamically adjust the number of data samples that are needed for processing (and consequently reduce the power consumption) based on the application at hand and the desired trade-off between...
An Efficient Multi-Level Cache Architecture for Storage Subsystems
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Asadi, Hossein (Supervisor)
Abstract
The increasing gap between performance of Hard Disk Drives (HDDs) and processors has made storage subsystem as the performance bottleneck of computer systems. Solid-State Drives (SSDs) due to having no mechanical parts provide higher performance compared to HDDs. However, the high price of SSDs compared to HDDs prevents them from replacing HDDs. Employing SSDs as a caching layer for HDDs is a cost-efficient solution for designing high-performance storage subsystems. Previous studies on SSD caching neglected to simultaneously consider performance, endurance, and reliability in their architectures. In this thesis, Three-level I/O Cache Architecture (TICA) is proposed, which tries to improve...

Using ROP and Gas ratio Data to Improve Geosteering Performance
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Jamshidi, Saeed (Supervisor)
Abstract
Geosteering is a process that is used in drilling oil and gas wells and its main goal is to reach hydrocarbon layers with high accuracy and optimal extraction from them. ROP is the distance drillied per unit of time, which has applications such as formation evaluation, boundary detection and maintaining the well path in geosteering. Gas ratio is another important parameter in this project which is strongly influenced by porosity, permeability and ROP. First, we give a brief introduction of various logs used in drilling like gamma-ray, density, neutron and sonic. Then in the literature review, we examine geosteering technologies such as automatic geosteering and machine learning. As we know,...

Abstract
This paper proposes a novel FPGA-based matrix-inversion technique that is specifically tailored and optimized for real-time electromagnetic transients simulation of power electronic converters with high switching frequency. This is the first reported solution that is capable of solving the real-time equations related to using ideal switch model and the associated circuitry in very small time-steps (e.g., an average of 36 ns in a three-phase back-to-back converter case study), without requiring large amount of memory, being limited to small number of switches, adding parasitic elements, or depending on a priori knowledge of the circuit operation or switching strategy. The accuracy of the...

Abstract
The Boolean satisfiability problem plays a central role in computational complexity and is often used as a starting point for showing NP lower bounds. Generalisations such as Succinct SAT, where a Boolean formula is succinctly represented as a Boolean circuit, have been studied in the literature in order to lift the Boolean satisfiability problem to higher complexity classes such as NEXP. While, in theory, iterating this approach yields complete problems for k-NEXP for all k > 0, using such iterations of Succinct SAT is at best tedious when it comes to proving lower bounds. The main contribution of this paper is to show that the Boolean satisfiability problem has another canonical...

Abstract
Let G be a simple graph of order n. We mean by dominating set, a set S C V(G) such that every vertex of G is either in S or adjacent to a vertex in S. The domination polynomial of G is the polynomial Σni=1 (G,i)xi where d((g,i) is the number of dominating sets of G of size i. Two graphs G and H are said to be V-equivalent, written G H, if D((G, x) = D(H, x). The D-equivalence class of G is [G] = { H H G }. Recently, the determination of D-equivalence class of a given graph, has been of interest. In this paper, it is shown that for n ≥ 3, [Kn, n] has size two. We conjecture that the complete bipartite graph Km,n for n - m ≥ 2, is uniquely determined by its domination polynomial

Abstract
In this brief, an open-loop double-carrier simultaneous wireless power and data transfer system is presented. Although the system is intended for implantable biomedical microsystems, it can also be used for other low-power applications such as Internet of Things (IoT). In the proposed system, uplink data communication (from the implant to the outside of the body) is implemented by switching a capacitor on the implant site. This switching results in changing the resonance frequency between two different frequencies during different periods of time. To keep the power transfer efficiency (PTE) and the power delivered to the load (PDL) almost constant, two external power transmitters, each...

Abstract
In this paper, a new fully analog technique is proposed by means of which the adverse effects of frequency dependent gain/phase errors in quadrature transmitters are suppressed. Two separate phase and gain mismatch cancellation loops are implemented which search for the minimum side-band component. A new sign detection method is also introduced which makes sure the direction of the loop is correct. Analytical models and mathematical derivations have been presented which corroborates the circuit implementation. A proof of concept prototype using off-the-shelf components have also been measured which suggests 38-dB side-band rejection (SBR). Furthermore, the measured TX EVM and BER are...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Hashemi, Matin (Supervisor) ; Parniani, Mostafa (Co-Advisor)
Abstract
Real-time simulators are important in design and test of power systems. Real-time simulators with hardware-in-loop capabilities are used in design of new elements in order to achieve maximum compatibility between subsystems, or in diagnosis and maintenance. The purpose of this dissertation is to design a real-time simulator for electrical machines. For this purpose, a three-phase induction machine is chosen and its model is extracted and discretized. This procedure results in a system of differential equations in form of AX = B. The extracted equations needs to be solved in real-time at every time-step. The real-time algorithms are imple-mented on FPGA. The implemented real-time simulator...
Cayley Graphs and Annihilating-Ideal Graph of a Ring
, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology ; Akbari, Saeed (Supervisor)
Abstract
In the recent years, the role of combinatorics and graph theory have grown in the progress of computer sciences. For instance, the circulant graphs have applications in design of interconnection networks and the graphs with integer eigenvalues are applied in modelling quantum spin networks supporting the perfect state transfer. The circulant graphs with integer eigenvalues also found applications in molecular graph energy. In 2006, it was shown that an n-vertex circulant graph G has integer eigenvalues if G=Cay(Zn; T ) or G= Cay(Zn; T)∪Cay(Zn;U(Zn)), where T Z(Zn). The Cayley graph Cay(Zn;U(Zn)) is known as the unitary Cayley graph. Fuchs defined the unitary Cayely graph of a commutative...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Modarres Yazdi, Mohammad (Supervisor)
Abstract
Project Portfolio Selection as a part of Project Portfolio Management, is a very important issue for the organizations and is a key activity. In this thesis at the first with studding stock portfolios, it has been shown that because of mathematical features, Conditional Value at Risk is a coherent risk criteria and used efficiently in stock portfolio management. So in Project Portfolio Selection we use Conditional value at Risk as coherent risk criteria and based on that we will present a model that not only reach to the maximum utility but also but also reach to the minimum feasible Conditional Value at Risk. After that with the use of this model and with the use of mathematical features...

Abstract
Employing a small Non-Volatile Memory (NVM) as the Persistent Journal Area (PJA) along with a DRAM-based buffer is an efficient approach to overcome DRAM vulnerability, named NVB-Buffer. Spin-Transfer Torque Magnetic Random Access Memory (STT-MRAM) is one of the most promising PJA candidates thanks to providing high endurance, non-volatility, and DRAM-like latency. Despite these advantages, STT-MRAM faces major reliability challenges, i.e. Retention Failure, Read Disturbance, and Write Failure, which have not been addressed in previously suggested NVB-Buffers. In this paper, we first demonstrate that the retention failure is the dominant source of errors in NVB-Buffers as it suffers from...

Abstract
Performance and reliability are two prominent factors in the design of data storage systems. To achieve higher performance, recently storage system designers use DynamicDynamic RAMRAM (DRAM)-based buffers. The volatility of DRAM brings up the possibility of data loss and data inconsistency. Thus, a part of the main storage is conventionally used as the journal area to be able of recovering unflushed data pages in the case of power failure. Moreover, periodically flushing buffered data pages to the main storage is a common mechanism to preserve a high level of reliability. This scheme, however, leads to a considerable increase in storage write traffic, which adversely affects the performance....

Taghizadeh Manzari, M. (MehrdadThe main goals of this project are studding the effect of carbon nanotube on the properties of PA6/PA66 matrix and miscibility of PA6/PA66 blend. So PA6/PA66/CNT nanocomposites were compounded by melt mixing method and samples were prepared by injection molding. Due to study miscibility of PA6 and PA66, we used DMTA test and found that PA6 and PA66 are miscible because of existing one pick on DMTA graph. Also DSC test results confirmed that PA6 and PA66 are miscible. Moreover, according to DMTA results, modulus will be rose by increasing CNT content. Mechanical test showed same results in this case. Adding 1%CNT to matrix caused 10% improvement in modulus and...

Genco's Bidding Strategy in Day-Ahead Energy Market Considering Demand Response
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Ehsan, Mehdi (Supervisor)
Abstract
Since 1980s the electricity market has been gradually evolving from a monopoly market into a liberalized one for encouraging competition and improving efficiency. This brings the opportunity for generation companies (Gencos) to make more profits while embracing more risks of not being dispatched. Therefore, it has become a core interest for the Gencos to develop optimal bidding strategies to maximize the profits and minimize the risks while participating in such a competitive market. Error of determining day-ahead electricity price is one of the sources of the risk. Energy price has a high impact on bidding strategy optimization process. So it should be determined with low error which is not...
