An Efficient Multi-Level Cache Architecture for Storage Subsystems

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hadizadeh, Mostafa (Author) ; Asadi, Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The increasing gap between performance of Hard Disk Drives (HDDs) and processors has made storage subsystem as the performance bottleneck of computer systems. Solid-State Drives (SSDs) due to having no mechanical parts provide higher performance compared to HDDs. However, the high price of SSDs compared to HDDs prevents them from replacing HDDs. Employing SSDs as a caching layer for HDDs is a cost-efficient solution for designing high-performance storage subsystems. Previous studies on SSD caching neglected to simultaneously consider performance, endurance, and reliability in their architectures. In this thesis, Three-level I/O Cache Architecture (TICA) is proposed, which tries to improve...

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics ; Volume 66, Issue 2 , 2019 , Pages 1224-1234 ; 02780046 (ISSN) Hadizadeh, A ; Hashemi, M ; Labbaf, M ; Parniani, M ; Sharif University of Technology
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc  2019
    Abstract
This paper proposes a novel FPGA-based matrix-inversion technique that is specifically tailored and optimized for real-time electromagnetic transients simulation of power electronic converters with high switching frequency. This is the first reported solution that is capable of solving the real-time equations related to using ideal switch model and the associated circuitry in very small time-steps (e.g., an average of 36 ns in a three-phase back-to-back converter case study), without requiring large amount of memory, being limited to small number of switches, adding parasitic elements, or depending on a priori knowledge of the circuit operation or switching strategy. The accuracy of the...

    Higher-Order quantified boolean satisfiability

    , Article 47th International Symposium on Mathematical Foundations of Computer Science, MFCS 2022, 22 August 2022 through 26 August 2022 ; Volume 241 , 2022 ; 18688969 (ISSN); 9783959772563 (ISBN) Chistikov, D ; Haase, C ; Hadizadeh, Z ; Mansutti, A ; Sharif University of Technology
Schloss Dagstuhl- Leibniz-Zentrum fur Informatik GmbH, Dagstuhl Publishing  2022
    Abstract
The Boolean satisfiability problem plays a central role in computational complexity and is often used as a starting point for showing NP lower bounds. Generalisations such as Succinct SAT, where a Boolean formula is succinctly represented as a Boolean circuit, have been studied in the literature in order to lift the Boolean satisfiability problem to higher complexity classes such as NEXP. While, in theory, iterating this approach yields complete problems for k-NEXP for all k > 0, using such iterations of Succinct SAT is at best tedious when it comes to proving lower bounds. The main contribution of this paper is to show that the Boolean satisfiability problem has another canonical...

A fully analog side-band cancellation technique in radio-frequency transmitters

    , Article Microelectronics Journal ; Volume 53 , Volume 53 , 2016 , Pages 116-126 ; 00262692 (ISSN) Nikoofard, A ; Kananian, S ; Hadizadeh, E ; Fotowat Ahmady, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2016
    Abstract
In this paper, a new fully analog technique is proposed by means of which the adverse effects of frequency dependent gain/phase errors in quadrature transmitters are suppressed. Two separate phase and gain mismatch cancellation loops are implemented which search for the minimum side-band component. A new sign detection method is also introduced which makes sure the direction of the loop is correct. Analytical models and mathematical derivations have been presented which corroborates the circuit implementation. A proof of concept prototype using off-the-shelf components have also been measured which suggests 38-dB side-band rejection (SBR). Furthermore, the measured TX EVM and BER are...

Design and Hardware Implementation of Real-Time Simulator for Electrical Machines

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hadizadeh, Ali (Author) ; Hashemi, Matin (Supervisor) ; Parniani, Mostafa (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
Real-time simulators are important in design and test of power systems. Real-time simulators with hardware-in-loop capabilities are used in design of new elements in order to achieve maximum compatibility between subsystems, or in diagnosis and maintenance. The purpose of this dissertation is to design a real-time simulator for electrical machines. For this purpose, a three-phase induction machine is chosen and its model is extracted and discretized. This procedure results in a system of differential equations in form of AX = B. The extracted equations needs to be solved in real-time at every time-step. The real-time algorithms are imple-mented on FPGA. The implemented real-time simulator...

CoPA: Cold page awakening to overcome retention failures in Stt-Mram based I/O buffers

    IEEE Computer Society  2021
    Abstract
Employing a small Non-Volatile Memory (NVM) as the Persistent Journal Area (PJA) along with a DRAM-based buffer is an efficient approach to overcome DRAM vulnerability, named NVB-Buffer. Spin-Transfer Torque Magnetic Random Access Memory (STT-MRAM) is one of the most promising PJA candidates thanks to providing high endurance, non-volatility, and DRAM-like latency. Despite these advantages, STT-MRAM faces major reliability challenges, i.e. Retention Failure, Read Disturbance, and Write Failure, which have not been addressed in previously suggested NVB-Buffers. In this paper, we first demonstrate that the retention failure is the dominant source of errors in NVB-Buffers as it suffers from...

CoPA: Cold page awakening to overcome retention failures in STT-MRAM Based I/O Buffers

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Parallel and Distributed Systems ; Volume 33, Issue 10 , 2022 , Pages 2304-2317 ; 10459219 (ISSN) Hadizadeh, M ; Cheshmikhani, E ; Rahmanpour, M ; Mutlu, O ; Asadi, H ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Performance and reliability are two prominent factors in the design of data storage systems. To achieve higher performance, recently storage system designers use DynamicDynamic RAMRAM (DRAM)-based buffers. The volatility of DRAM brings up the possibility of data loss and data inconsistency. Thus, a part of the main storage is conventionally used as the journal area to be able of recovering unflushed data pages in the case of power failure. Moreover, periodically flushing buffered data pages to the main storage is a common mechanism to preserve a high level of reliability. This scheme, however, leads to a considerable increase in storage write traffic, which adversely affects the performance....

Meta-aligner: long-read alignment based on genome statistics

    , Article BMC Bioinformatics ; Volume 18, Issue 1 , 2017 ; 14712105 (ISSN) Nashta Ali, D ; Aliyari, A ; Ahmadian Moghadam, A ; Edrisi, M. A ; Motahari, S. A ; Khalaj, B. H ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Background: Current development of sequencing technologies is towards generating longer and noisier reads. Evidently, accurate alignment of these reads play an important role in any downstream analysis. Similarly, reducing the overall cost of sequencing is related to the time consumption of the aligner. The tradeoff between accuracy and speed is the main challenge in designing long read aligners. Results: We propose Meta-aligner which aligns long and very long reads to the reference genome very efficiently and accurately. Meta-aligner incorporates available short/long aligners as subcomponents and uses statistics from the reference genome to increase the performance. Meta-aligner estimates...

    Abstract
Taghizadeh Manzari, M. (MehrdadThe main goals of this project are studding the effect of carbon nanotube on the properties of PA6/PA66 matrix and miscibility of PA6/PA66 blend. So PA6/PA66/CNT nanocomposites were compounded by melt mixing method and samples were prepared by injection molding. Due to study miscibility of PA6 and PA66, we used DMTA test and found that PA6 and PA66 are miscible because of existing one pick on DMTA graph. Also DSC test results confirmed that PA6 and PA66 are miscible. Moreover, according to DMTA results, modulus will be rose by increasing CNT content. Mechanical test showed same results in this case. Adding 1%CNT to matrix caused 10% improvement in modulus and...

    Abstract
This paper studies the problem of secure and resilient distributed cooperative control for autonomous vehicles under false data injection attacks on the vehicular communication net-work. We propose a model-based scheme to detect unknown data falsification attacks using the predicted traj ectory in a distributed nonlinear model predictive control problem. First, as a local agent, each autonomous vehicle stores the information received from its neighboring vehicles to clarify anomalies. The recorded data is investigated over a temporal moving observation window which contains different prediction sequences of the distributed nonlinear model predictive control problem in the previous times. On The Non-Linear Behavior of Continuous Beam to Column Connection

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Rahmani, Ahmad (Author) ; Moghadam, Hasan (Supervisor)
    Abstract
A special steel beam-to-column connection, named Khor-jini, is commonly used for steel framing system in Iran. In this system, two continuous beams are passed next to the columns and are connected to the column side using seated brackets. This type of connection has been common in Iran from the late past. Unfortunately, the seismic behavior of Khorjini frames had not been sufficiently studied prior to Manjil Earthquake of 1990. Due to very large damages which occurred in steel structures especially in connections during the said earthquake, the seismic behavior of this type of connection was studied and some of its weak points were recognized. In this study non-linear...

Model-Based Reasoning Based on Giere’s Explanation of Model

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hashemi, Amin (Author) ; Heidari, Moghadam (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In the present research, model-based reasoning is introduced and explained based on Giere’s explanation of model. In other word, this research could be regarded as a reconstruction of model in Giere’s books and papers due to prpose a clear explanation of model-based reasoning. In the second chapter, after the introduction, the concept of model in Giere’s distinguished book, “Explainnig Science: A Cognitive Approach” (1988) is introduced and analyzed. In the second chapter, however, the concept of model in Giere’s recent works is traced. “An agent-based account of model” and “focusing on functionality rather than ontology” could be explained as the two important differences between his...
