Fundamental limits of Smultaneous Information and Energy Transmission and Reception

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Haji Abdollahi Bafghi, Ali (Author) ; Aref, Mohammad Reza (Supervisor) ; Mirmohseni, Mahtab (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
Nowadays energy consumption becomes an important design factor in communication systems because of financial reasons and environmental concerns. There would be many equipments with large energy consumption in next generation (5G) networks, so energy efficiency will play an important rule in these networks. Two alternative techniques used for energy consumption management are energy harvesting and simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT). A useful scenario in SWIPT is to use received energy for future transmissions. In this scenario, the design of encoder and decoder is a new open problem, because of the memory now appeared in the system. Thus to understand the interplay...

Information Theoretic Analysis of Smart Radio Environment

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Haji Abdollahi Bafghi, Ali (Author) ; Nasiri Kenari, Masoumeh (Supervisor) ; Mirmohseni, Mahtab (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this thesis, we analyze the degree of freedom (DoF) of wireless multi-user networks in the presence of smart radio environment. The two most important wireless multi-user networks, K-user interference channel, and M*N wireless X network are considered and the effects of the presence of a smart radio environment on the DoF of these networks are evaluated. To this end, first, we consider Intelligent Reflecting Surfaces (IRSs), which are a practical model of smart radio environments and can control the propagation of waves toward the desired direction in the environment. Then, we consider the instantaneous relay as a general theoretical model, which is the most comprehensive model for smart...

Joint transfer of energy and information in a two-hop relay channel

    Abstract
We study the problem of joint information and energy transfer in a two-hop channel with a Radio frequency (RF) energy harvesting relay. We consider a finite battery size at the relay and deterministic energy loss in transmitting energy. In other words, to be able to send an energy-contained symbol, the relay must receive multiple energy-contained symbols. Thus, we face a kind of channel with memory. We model the energy saved in battery as channel state with the challenge that the receiver does not know the channel state. First, we consider the problem without any channel noise and derive an achievable rate. Next, we extend the results to the case with an independent and identically...

    Abstract
In this paper, we study the degrees of freedom (DoF) of a frequency-selective K-user interference channel in the presence of an instantaneous relay (IR) with multiple receiving and transmitting antennas. We investigate two scenarios based on the IR antennas’ cooperation ability. First, we assume that the IR receiving and transmitting antennas can coordinate with each other and that the transmitted signal of each transmitting antenna can depend on the received signals of all receiving antennas, and we derive lower and upper bounds for the sum DoF of this model. In an interference alignment scheme, we divide receivers into two groups called clean and dirty receivers. We design our scheme such...

    Abstract
In this letter, we consider a cache-enabled cloud radio access network with single-antenna base stations and single-antenna mobile users. Each base station can access the central processor of the network via a separate backhaul link with limited capacity. We utilize the interference alignment scheme as the transmission strategy between base stations and users. By assuming a block transmission scheme, we define a related data transmission delay. We derive the transmission delay and network power consumption. At last, we solve the problem of joint optimization of data transmission delay and network power consumption using DC programming algorithm. In our numerical results, we investigate the...

Degrees of freedom of the K-User Interference channel assisted by active and passive IRSs

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Communications ; Volume 70, Issue 5 , 2022 , Pages 3063-3080 ; 00906778 (ISSN) Abdollahi Bafghi, A. H ; Jamali, V ; Nasiri Kenari, M ; Schober, R ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this paper, we study the degrees of freedom (DoF) region and sum DoF of the time-selective K-user interference channel in the presence of intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRSs). We consider both active and passive IRSs. While both types of IRS can attenuate the amplitude and change the phase of a reflected electromagnetic wave, active IRSs are also capable of amplifying the wave. We derive inner and outer bounds for the DoF region and lower and upper bounds for the sum DoF of the K-user interference channel in the presence of an active IRS and prove that the maximum value of K for the sum DoF can be achieved if the number of IRS elements exceeds a certain finite value. The analysis...

    Abstract
In this paper, we study the DoF of the time-selective M × N wireless X-network assisted by an IRS. It is well-known that the DoF of the M ×N wireless X-network is MN M+N.1 . We show that the maximum DoF of min{M,N} can be achieved when the IRS has enough elements. We consider two kinds of active and passive IRSs. We also consider two different scenarios, where the channel coefficients for IRS elements are either independent or correlated. For the M×N wireless X-network assisted by an active IRS with independent channel coefficients, we derive the inner and outer bounds on the DoF region and the lower and upper bounds on the sum DoF. We show that the maximum value for the sum DoF, i.e.,...

Optimal Batch Production for a Single Machine System with Rework

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Haji, Babak (Author) ; Haji, Ali Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
This research attempts to develop the optimal solution for an inventory problem consisting of a single machine which produces items some of which may be defective. We assume that no shortages are allowed and all defective items are to be reworked. Setup cost for rework and waiting time of defectives are considered. This research consists of two different parts. In the first part we consider two different policies where in the first policy in each cycle after the regular production the machine is setup for the rework of defectives of the same cycle. In the second policy several cycles constitute a period. All the defectives produced in the period are reworked in the last cycle of that period....

This research is concentrated on Electric Distribution Companies in Tehran region and studies knowledge management as...

Effects of Mechanical Loading Environment on Aneurysm

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Abdollahi, Rahim (Author) ; Abedian, Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Human body is subjected to body accelerations or vibrations in several circumstances. During gravitational changes, the hydrostatic pressure gradient along the body axis changes, and then body fluids are redistributed. Prolonged exposure to high level external acceleration may lead to serious or even fatal situations on account of disturbances in blood flow. Due to physiological importance of body acceleration many theoretical investigations have been carried out for the flow of blood under the influence of body acceleration. In this study, the mechanical loads that pilots experience during flight are considered. The aim of the present study is to investigate the effects of mechanical...

Can Religious Disagreement Reduce the Justification and Rationality of our Beliefs?

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Abdollahi, Jalal (Author) ; Taheri, Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
It is undeniable that there is a great disagreement in the every field of religion. Reductionists argue that awareness of disagreements reduces the justification and rationality of beliefs, including religious beliefs. In contrast, non-reductionists believe that while reductionism may be true in other domains, it is not necessarily true in religion, because religious beliefs have characteristics that can deny a reductionist argument. They are in the realm of religion. In this thesis, I will discuss issues related to those characteristics that can deny reductionist argument in the realm of religion. In this thesis, I try to show that the arguments and responses presented in defense of the...

One-for-one period policy in a two-echelon inventory system with commoncycle and poisson demand rate for retailers

    , Article 2009 International Conference on Computers and Industrial Engineering, CIE 2009 ; 2009 , Pages 831-834 ; 9781424441365 (ISBN) Haji, R ; Tayebi, H ; Haji, B ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
This paper deals with a two-echelon inventory system consisting of onesupplier and N retailers. Each retailer faces an independent Poisson demand withthe same rate and applies a new ordering policy called one-for-one- periodordering policy for its inventory control. In this ordering policy the ordersize is equal to one and the time interval between any two consecutive ordersforms a common fixed cycle. Thus, the supplier faces a deterministic demand andadopts a deterministic inventory policy. At each cycle he orders a batch of sizeN to his own supplier. Upon receipt of each batch he sends 1 unit of theproduct to each retailer with a transportation cost. In this paper, for theabove system we...

Revenue sharing contract for a VMI with one for one period policy

    Abstract
In this article, we design a revenue-sharing contract to coordinate inventory control decisions in a serial supply chain consisting of one supplier, one vendor, and one retailer. We assume that the retailer faces Poisson demand and his unsatisfied demands will be lost. The retailer applies one-for-one period policy in which he constantly places an order for one unit of product to the vendor in a predetermined time interval which results in a deterministic demand for the vendor. Vendor orders the required quantity from supplier which will be immediately received at the vendor’s warehouse. Solution procedures are developed to find the equilibrium in the vendor managed inventory program with a...

    Abstract
In this paper, we develop an inventory model with price dependant demand rate, under time value of money and inflation, finite time horizon, exponential backlogging rate and exponential deterioration rate with the objective of maximizing the present worth of the total system profit. Using a dynamic programming based solution algorithm, we are able to find the optimal sequence of the cycles and also to obtain different optimal selling prices and optimal order quantities for the cycles with unequal lengths, which have never been done before for our model. We also use a proper numerical example to show accuracy of the solution procedure. © 2008 IEEE
