    Abstract
The present study investigated the biological treatment of produced water in a microbial electrochemical cell (MXC). The main objectives were to develop a novel spiral microbial electrochemical cell (SMXC) and test its performance for produced water treatment under highly saline conditions (salinity > 200000 ppm). The bioelectrochemical performance of the system was also evaluated in terms of power and hydrogen production over time. The comparatively inexpensive material and ease of application increased the feasibility of the SMXC configuration for produced water treatment. Optimal SMXC performance as a microbial fuel cell was achieved at a maximum open circuit potential of 330 mV, maximum...

Effect of hydrogen combustion reaction on the dehydrogenation of ethane in a fixed-bed catalytic membrane reactor

    , Article Chinese Journal of Chemical Engineering ; Volume 23, Issue 8 , August , 2015 , Pages 1316-1325 ; 10049541 (ISSN) Hasany, M ; Malakootikhah, M ; Rahmanian, V ; Yaghmaei, S ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
A two-dimensional non-isothermal mathematical model has been developed for the ethane dehydrogenation reaction in a fixed-bed catalytic membrane reactor. Since ethane dehydrogenation is an equilibrium reaction, removal of produced hydrogen by the membrane shifts the thermodynamic equilibrium to ethylene production. For further displacement of the dehydrogenation reaction, oxidative dehydrogenation method has been used. Since ethane dehydrogenation is an endothermic reaction, the energy produced by the oxidative dehydrogenation method is consumed by the dehydrogenation reaction. The results show that the oxidative dehydrogenation method generated a substantial improvement in the reactor...

    Abstract
A successful design, previously adapted for treatment of complex wastewaters in a microbial fuel cell (MFC), was used to fabricate two MFCs, with a few changes for cost reduction and ease of construction. Performance and electrochemical characteristics of MFCs were evaluated in different environmental conditions (in complete darkness and presence of light), and different flow patterns of batch and continuous in four hydraulic retention times from 8 to 30h. Changes in chemical oxygen demand, and nitrate and phosphate concentrations were evaluated. In contrast to the microbial fuel cell operated in darkness (D-MFC) with a stable open circuit voltage of 700mV, presence of light led to growth of...

    Abstract
Electrospinning is an economical and alluring method to fabricate wound dressing mats from a variety of natural and synthetic materials. In this study, polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and starch composite mats containing ciprofloxacin (CIP) loaded on titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2) were prepared. Fourier Transform Infrared spectra of CIP, synthesized TiO2 NPs, TiO2/CIP, and PVDF/starch composite mats are analyzed. Scanning electron microscopy images revealed that the fiber diameter of PVDF nanofibers thickens by increasing starch, which varies between 180 nm and 550 nm. Strain at break of PVDF, starch, PVDF/starch (2:1 w:w; P2S1), PVDF/starch (1:1 w:w; P1S1), PVDF/starch (1:2 w:w;...

Modeling formulation and a new heuristic for the railroad blocking problem

    , Article Applied Mathematical Modelling ; Volume 56 , 2018 , Pages 304-324 ; 0307904X (ISSN) Hasany, R. M ; Shafahi, Y ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Inc  2018
    Abstract
The railroad blocking problem is an important issue at the tactical level of railroad freight transportation. This problem consists of determining paths between the origins and destinations of each shipment to minimize the operating and user costs while satisfying the railroad supply and demand restrictions. A mixed-integer program (MIP) is developed to find the optimal paths, and a new heuristic is developed to solve the proposed model. This heuristic decomposes the model into two sub-problems of manageable size and then provides feasible solutions. We discuss the performance of the proposed heuristic for a set of instances with up to 90 stations. A comparison with the CPLEX MIP solver...

Two-stage stochastic programming for the railroad blocking problem with uncertain demand and supply resources

    , Article Computers and Industrial Engineering ; Volume 106 , 2017 , Pages 275-286 ; 03608352 (ISSN) Mohammad Hasany, R ; Shafahi, Y ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The railroad blocking problem is classified in the tactical level of freight rail transportation problems. The objective of this problem is to determine the optimal paths for each shipment such that the railway limitations are satisfied. In this problem, the quantities of both demand and supply resource indicators are often assumed to be certain and known, but because a blocking solution is designed for a relatively long period of time, this assumption is not reasonable. In this paper, we have developed a two-stage stochastic program for this problem to consider the uncertainty inherent in demand and supply resource indicators. Due to the size and complexity of the stochastic program and the...

Ant colony optimisation for finding the optimal railroad path

    Abstract
Engineers have applied mathematical models to find the optimal railway path in order to minimise the total cost subject to the railway limitations. There are two main issues for this problem. First, this approach results in a complex formulation for real-life applications, mainly because there are a huge number of variables and constraints. Second, to compute the total cost, different types of data are required, such as topography, right-of-way unit cost, forbidden zones and geology. Because various administrations are often responsible for preparing these data with their own standards, there is much inconsistency in the data. This paper deals with the first issue by proposing a...

Robust model and solution algorithm for the railroad blocking problem under uncertainty

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 25, Issue 4 , 2018 , Pages 1916-1930 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Hasany, R. M ; Shafahi, Y ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The railroad blocking problem emerges as an important issue at the tactical level of planning in freight rail transportation. This problem consists of determining the optimal paths for freight cars in a rail network. Often, demand and supply resource indicators are assumed certain; hence, the solution obtained from a certain model might not be optimal or even feasible in practice due to the stochastic nature of these parameters. To address this issue, this paper develops a robust model for this problem with uncertain demand and travel time as supply resource indicators. Since the model combines integer variables and nonlinear functions, a branch-And-cut algorithm is used to solve the...

A simulation model for train movements in the rail network

    , Article Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers: Transport ; Volume 172, Issue 3 , 2019 , Pages 152-163 ; 0965092X (ISSN) Moeinaddini, A ; Shafahi, Y ; Mohammad Hasany, R ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In rail transportation, the process of finding the optimal movement of freight goods is considered a tactical level of rail planning. Solving this problem requires one simultaneously to address the railroad blocking problem and the train dispatching problem, which is difficult. Additionally, when these problems are represented by mathematical relations, application of the solution leads to unexpected results in the real world. The main objective of this research was to build a simulation environment to represent the key behaviours of typical and applicable constraints of a railway system. This environment provides a tool with which to evaluate different decisions among a list of candidate...

    Abstract
The effects of different nano-SiO2 contents on the rheological properties of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) solution and mechanical, thermal, structural, and piezoelectric properties of composite nanofibers were investigated. Results showed an increase in fiber diameter (∼125 to 350 nm) and ∼450% increase in tensile strength as the content of nano-SiO2 particles increased. The degree of crystallinity decreased by 19% as the nano-SiO2 content increased by 2% (w/w). Further investigation demonstrated that silica could significantly improve the piezoelectric properties of PVDF nanofibers as the output voltage showed an increase in the presence of silica attributed to change in the crystalline...

    Abstract
Great advantages bestowed by mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) including high surface area, tailorable pore diameter and surface chemistry, and large pore volume render them as efficient tools in biomedical applications. Herein, MSNs with different surface chemistries were synthesized and investigated in terms of biocompatibility and their impact on the morphology of bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells both in 2D and 3D culture systems. Bare MSNs (BMSNs) were synthesized by template removing method using tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) as a precursor. The as-prepared BMSNs were then used to prepare amine-functionalized (AMSNs), carboxyl-functionalized (CMSNs) and polymeric...

    Abstract
In rail transportation, there have been several attempts to determine the best routes for shipments (a number of cars with the same origin-destination) through the network. Shipments enter into several intermediate yards on their routes to separate and regroup shipments into new trains. Most of time, every entering into a yard includes excessive delay for shipments; therefore it is an ideal plan that each shipment has been transported by an exclusive train service. Mainly because of restriction on a number of running trains, this plan cannot be adapted in most cases. Finding the optimal route over the rail network with above and other common constraints would be handled by railroad blocking...

    Abstract
Despite the promise of hydrogel-based stem cell therapies in orthopedics, a significant need still exists for the development of injectable microenvironments capable of utilizing the regenerative potential of donor cells. Indeed, the quest for biomaterials that can direct stem cells into bone without the need of external factors has been the "Holy Grail" in orthopedic stem cell therapy for decades. To address this challenge, we have utilized a combinatorial approach to screen over 63 nanoengineered hydrogels made from alginate, hyaluronic acid, and two-dimensional nanoclays. Out of these combinations, we have identified a biomaterial that can promote osteogenesis in the absence of...

    Abstract
Using multiple antennas at the transmit and receive sides of a passive radar brings both the benefits of MIMO radar and passive radar. However one of the obstacles arisen in such configuration is the receive antennas placement in proper positions so that the radar performance is improved. Here we just consider the case of positioning one receiver among multiple illuminators of opportunity. Indeed it is a start for the solution of optimizing the geometry of the multiple receivers in a passive radar
