Feasibility of Providing Media for Multi-Media Filter Bed in Treatment

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Shojae Ghias, Masoumeh (Author) ; Hashemian, Jamaleddin (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In Iran, the technical issues are not considered when changing or replacing the bed of filter. In this regard, less attention is paid for the properties of the materials (e.g. shape, aggregation, effective size and uniform coefficient of grains, etc.) used in the replaced bed of filter. Therefore, the performance of the replaced filter is not good from treated water quality, water production, and backwash interval points of view. In this project, Light Expanded Clay Aggregate, LECA, was chosen as a suitable material to be used in the bed of filter because of its favorable grain shape. The performance of LECA has been examined in both “Single- Media Filter” and “Dual-Media Filter” for...

Nonlinear Performance of 3-D Steel Structures by Scaled Nonlinear Dynamic Procedure

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hashemian, Behdad (Author) ; Mofid, Masoud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
It is well known that the most rigorous method to assess the performance and to predict the seismic demands of a structure subjected to earthquake is nonlinear time history analysis. However, this technique is accompanied by complexities and difficulties in evaluating the seismic demands of structures and requires superior knowledge and skill. As a result, in recent years, nonlinear static analysis has been proposed in performance based design procedures. One of the primary assumptions of nonlinear static procedures is that the behavior of a structure with multiple degrees of freedom (MDOF) subjected to seismic ground motion can be estimated from the response of an oscillator with a single...

    Control of Nonlinear Delayed Systems

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hashemian, Negar (Author) ; Shahrokhi, Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Time delay systems may arise in practice for a variety of reasons, such as autonomous systems (without feedback control), and the delay is the result of an intrinsic property of the system. Sometimes the delay results from feedback control action, instead from the system itself; that is, due to the nature of the system, the feedback is delayed. Another type of delays of similar effects may be incurred due to delayed measurements. In both delayed control and delayed measurement, the delay is usually considered undesirable, which has the tendency to deteriorate the system performance or even destabilize the system.

In this thesis, three types of adaptive controller are proposed for...

The Langmuir isotherm model was better fitted than Freundlichmodel. The results showed that the adsorption efficiency of violet B by...

Appropriate Methods of River Quality Restoration

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ikani, Nima (Author) ; Hashemian, Jamal (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The practice of river restoration has grown exponentially over the last several decades. There has been little empirical evaluation of whether restoration projects individually or cumulatively achieve the legally mandated goals of improving the structure and function of rivers. Nutrient reduction through simple methods is the most critical factor. The simplest method, which has minimal financial burden as well as preventing, and reducing the entrance of pollutants into the Chalus River (Mazandaran, in north of Iran), has been selected. The origins of rivers start at a high point and move with a steep. ...

Persistence in Seasonally Forced Epidemiological Models and Seasonally Varying Predator-Prey Models Via the Basic Reproduction Number

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hashemian, Zahra (Author) ; Hesaraki, Mahmoud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this study, we will examine persistence of various kinds of seasonally forced epidemiological models and seasonally varying predator-prey models. The results of our study regarding persistence of the models will be shown via basic reproduction number. We will show that, in the framework of our study and under some conditions, persistence is obtained as long as the basic reproduction number is bigger than one. We will also prove that, in the framework of our study and under sufficient conditions, if the basic reproduction number is smaller than one, the species under discussion won’t survive in the predator-prey models, and the disease(s) would go extinct in the epidemiological...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hashemian, Elyas (Author) ; Shafahi, Yousef (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Rail transport system plays an important role in the development of the economies of the countries. This system is worn out over time by operating and weather conditions and requires maintenance and repair. One of the objectives of maintenance operations is to maintain tracks in an acceptable level and prevent their excessive deviation from the optimal situation. This deviation is called geometric irregular deviation. If these irregularities go away, they can cause traffic accidents and derailment in addition to losing travel convenience. So avoiding the deviation of the tracks is a very important. Maintenance management systems in the past few decades have been considered by the experts in...

A meshless approach for solution of Burgers' equation

    , Article Journal of Computational and Applied Mathematics ; Volume 220, Issue 1-2 , 2008 , Pages 226-239 ; 03770427 (ISSN) Hashemian, A ; Mohammadi Shodja, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2008
    Abstract
A new meshless method called gradient reproducing kernel particle method (GRKPM) is proposed for numerical solutions of one-dimensional Burgers' equation with various values of viscosity and different initial and boundary conditions. Discretization is first done in the space via GRKPM, and subsequently, the reduced system of nonlinear ordinary differential equations is discretized in time by the Gear's method. Comparison with the exact solutions, which are only available for restricted initial conditions and values of viscosity, approves the efficacy of the proposed method. For challenging cases involving small viscosities, comparison with the results obtained using other numerical schemes...

Effective anti-plane moduli of couple stress composites containing elliptic multi-coated nano-fibers with interfacial damage and variational bounds

    , Article International Journal of Damage Mechanics ; Volume 30, Issue 9 , 2021 , Pages 1351-1376 ; 10567895 (ISSN) Hashemian, B ; Shodja, H. M ; Sharif University of Technology
    SAGE Publications Ltd  2021
    Abstract
Prediction of the anti-plane moduli of solids consisting of a given distribution of unidirectionally aligned elliptic multi-coated fibers with interfacial damage is the focus of this paper. The fibers and their coating layers may be in the order of nano or micro scales. All the constituent phases of the composite are supposed to be described in terms of couple stress elasticity. Accordingly, the bounds for the overall shear moduli of the aforementioned composites are provided by employing the principles of minimum potential and complementary energies. Certain subtleties associated with the elliptic multi-coated fibers for three cases of pure sliding (completely damaged), imperfect (partially...

    Gradient reproducing kernel particle method

    , Article Journal of Mechanics of Materials and Structures ; Volume 3, Issue 1 , 2008 , Pages 127-152 ; 15593959 (ISSN) Hashemian, A ; Shodja, H. M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Mathematical Sciences Publishers  2008
    Abstract
This paper presents an innovative formulation of the RKPM (reproducing kernel particle method) pioneered by Liu. A major weakness of the conventional RKPM is in dealing with the derivative boundary conditions. The EFGM (element free Galerkin method) pioneered by Belytschko shares the same difficulty. The proposed RKPM referred to as GRKPM (gradient RKPM), incorporates the first gradients of the function in the reproducing equation. Therefore in three-dimensional space GRKPM consists of four independent types of shape functions. It is due to this feature that the corrected collocation method can be readily generalized and combined with GRKPM to enforce the EBCs (essential boundary...

GRKPM: Theory and Applications in Laminated Composite Plates and Nonlinear Evolutionary Partial Differential Equations With Large Gradients

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Hashemian, Alireza (Author) ; Mohammadi Shodja, Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Reproducing kernel particle method (RKPM) is a meshfree method for solving various differential equations. RKPM is based on pure mathematics; therefore, it is in the center of attention of many scientists. One major problem in RKPM is satisfying the essential boundary conditions (EBCs) involving the derivative of the field function. This problem is considered herein and its solution is proposed. To this end, two actions should be undertaken. First, the concept of Hermitian interpolation is employed to add the derivative term to the reproducing equation of RKPM and a new meshless method called gradient RKPM (GRKPM) is introduced. Second, the corrected collocation method is modified so...
