, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Nejat Pishkenari, Hossein (Supervisor)
Abstract
Currently, the use of robots and microrobots in medical applications has significantly increased due to their extensive and unique capabilities. One such application involves the utilization of magnetic continuum robots controlled by an external magnetic field in minimally invasive surgeries. This research focuses on discussing methods for effectively controlling magnetic-continuum robots and applying external magnetic fields. Two primary methods for applying the external magnetic field are explored: the use of electromagnetic coils and permanent magnets. Based on these methods, systems for applying the field and controlling the magnetic continuum robot have been constructed and...
Seismic Response of “Karroon III” DAM to Non-Uniform Ground Motions
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Ghaemian, Mohsen (Supervisor)
Abstract
Usually in analysis of arch dams, applied seismic motions on dam-foundation interface are assumed to be uniform. This is while that recorded motions show non-uniform accelerations in dam-foundation interface. Analyzing of the dam under this non-uniform accelerations we can find the importance of this assumption in analysis of arch dams. Two earthquakes were excited “KAROON III” dam at 20.11.2007 and 21.11.2007. The respective motions were recorded by the array of accelerometers that has been installed on the dam. The recorded motions, indicated non-uniformity of excitations in accelerometers were installed near the dam-foundation interface. Therefore this data provided an opportunity to...

Abstract
Nowadays in Iran service providers, are using copper lines in access networks. They rent these lines from a governmental telecommunication company during a complicated and time consuming process. In this thesis, the most common access technologies have been analyzed in order to find an alternative solution for copper lines. Based on the studies in this thesis, it is clear that Wimax technology can be an appropriate solution comparing with Wi-Fi and 3G from the point of quality and speed. The UNIDO methodology has been used in this economical assessment (feasibility study). In this methodology, all the running and fixed costs and revenue as well, have been estimated. In the next step,...
PMU-Based Identification and Analysis of Power System Low-Frequency Electromechanical Oscillations Using Ringdown Data
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Parniani, Mostafa (Supervisor)
Abstract
Poorly damped Low Frequency electromechanical Oscillations (LFOs) confine the capability of power system transmission lines. This phenomenon, which is the result of dynamic interactions among generator groups, may make the system prone to small- signal instability in some cases. Due to the use of some system controllers such as AVRs, these oscillations are inevitable.
Hence, electromechanical modes detection and assessing stability margin are important requirement in power system planning and operation, and can provide significant help to power system operators by preventing stability problems.
From the distant past, in order to monitor small-signal stability, power system operators...

Modeling and Designing Dynamic Positioning System for an Underwater Vehicle
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Seif, Mohammad Saeed (Supervisor)
Abstract
The aim of this study is to design a control system for an autonomous underwater vehicle and evaluate this system for different missions. Due to the non-linear behavior of the target robot, both linear and non-linear behavior of the system was studied. Model Predictive control method has been implemented since it can outline both linear and non-linear controllers. The first non-linear dynamics of this robot, maneuvering equipment, and external disturbances (waves and ocean current) were modeled. Then, to design the linear controller, the equations of motion have been linearized around the working point(cruise speed). In order to analyze both designed controllers, various duties have been...

, Article 5th International Conference on Autonomic and Autonomous Systems, ICAS 2009, Valencia, 20 April 2009 through 25 April 2009 ; 2009 , Pages 208-213 ; 9780769535845 (ISBN) ; Saghafi, F ; Sharif University of Technology
2009
Abstract
In this paper, the development of a controller for autonomous lateral alignment of fixed-wing Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) with runway centerline in landing phase is presented. Fuzzy Logic Control (FLC) is used in order to enable the vehicle to mimic the decision making procedure that a pilot follow in the same situation. Also, for longitudinal motion controller design for the UAV to follow a pre-defined trajectory, the pole-placement technique is used. It is assumed that the runway relative position and orientation are provided by a built in vision system and its associated image processing unit. The performance of the controller in the presence of the Gaussian noises is investigated by...
Improved optimal control technique for control of parallel three- phase inverters
, Article 2009 International Conference on Electric Power and Energy Conversion Systems, EPECS 2009, Sharjah, 10 November 2009 through 12 November 2009 ; 2009 ; 9789948427155 (ISBN) ; Mokhtari, H ; Sharif University of Technology
2009
Abstract
This paper proposes a high performance voltage tracking and current sharing among parallel connected inverters by applying optimal control and minimizing the cost function. The control system forces the voltage of load to track the voltage reference, and the current of all inverters becomes equal. Therefore, both current sharing and voltage tracking are obtained. In addition, the smallest input energy and simplicity in control circuit are the other advantages of the suggested method. To show the performance of the proposed control scheme, the simulations with two-modular practical systems are performed and the results are provided. The results indicate that the control objectives are...

Abstract
Recorded ground accelerations at various locations of Karun III Dam during November 20, 2007, were recorded by an array of accelerometers located on the dam. In terms of amplitude and phase, these accelerations show non-uniformities in different elevations. In this paper, the effect of these non-uniform ground motions on the seismic response of the dam taking dam-reservoir-foundation interaction into account is investigated. The EACD-3D-2008 finite element program and ABAQUS Software are used for carrying out the seismic analyses. For this purpose, time histories of the earthquake accelerations are interpolated at nodal points located on the dam foundation interface. The analysis has been...

Abstract
Thermal analysis of Roller Compacted Concrete (RCC) dams is generally carried out considering identical ambient boundary conditions at upstream and downstream faces. For the case of Shahri-Kor Dam (an RCC dam with a height of 57 m), recorded thermal data depicts a considerable difference between upstream and downstream ambient temperatures, especially during cold months. This paper investigates how taking this difference into account can affect the thermal response of the dam. For this purpose, two thermal analyses are carried out with and without consideration of these different ambient boundary conditions (DABC). Consequently, the computed temperatures at representative points are compared...

Abstract
Inert gold become catalytically active when dispersed in the form of nanoparticles. Isolated gold nanoparticles have demonstrated high catalytic activity for both oxidation and reduction reactions. In order to obtain high catalytic activity, gold nanoparticles are generally dispersed on support materials, among which oxides are commonly used. However, a substantial decrease in activity and selectivity of the immobilized catalysts is frequently observed due to the heterogeneous nature of these support materials in reaction media. In the course of our study on the metal-based catalysis for synthesis of organic compounds, we herein report that rod-shaped Au nanoparticles in aqua solution...
Secure Communication via Cooperation and Cooperative Jamming
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Behroozi, Hamid (Supervisor)
Abstract
The broadcast nature of wireless communications makes the propagation medium vulnerable to security attacks such as eavesdropping and jamming from adversarial or unauthorized users. Applying physical layer secrecy approaches will enable the exchange of confidential messages over a wireless medium in the presence of unauthorized eavesdroppers, without using any secret keys. However, physical layer security approaches are typically feasible only when the source-eavesdropper channel is weaker than the source-destination channel. Cooperative jamming can be used to overcome this challenge and increase the secrecy rate. In this thesis, the security of two-phase relaying system with multiple...

Abstract
In this study, natural convection heat transfer in a vertical flat-plate solar air heater of 2.5 m height and 1 m width, with one- and two-glass covers was studied experimentally. Totally six cases of airflow (two for air heater with one glass cover and four for air heater with two-glass covers) were considered. These cases included states that air could flow within spaces between absorber plate and glass covers or air was enclosed in such spaces. Absorber plate temperature, back-plate temperature, glass cover temperatures, mass flow rates of air within channels and the solar radiation were measured. The following relations are suggested:. For channels in which air could flow:Nu = 0.7362...
On the computational complexity of defining sets
, Article Discrete Applied Mathematics ; Volume 149, Issue 1-3 , 2005 , Pages 101-110 ; 0166218X (ISSN) ; Maserrat, H ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
Suppose we have a family F of sets. For every S∈F, a set D⊆S is a defining set for (F,S) if S is the only element of F that contains D as a subset. This concept has been studied in numerous cases, such as vertex colorings, perfect matchings, dominating sets, block designs, geodetics, orientations, and Latin squares. In this paper, first, we propose the concept of a defining set of a logical formula, and we prove that the computational complexity of such a problem is Σ2-complete. We also show that the computational complexity of the following problem about the defining set of vertex colorings of graphs is Σ2-complete: INSTANCE: A graph G with a vertex coloring c and an integer k.QUESTION: If...
On the complexity of the circular chromatic number

Abstract
Circular chromatic number, χc is a natural generalization of chromatic number. It is known that it is NP-hard to determine whether or not an arbitrary graph G satisfies χ(G)= χc(G). In this paper we prove that this problem is NP-hard even if the chromatic number of the graph is known. This answers a question of Xuding Zhu. Also we prove that for all positive integers k ≥ 2 and n ≥ 3, for a given graph G with χ(G)= n, it is NP-complete to verify if χc(G)≤ n -1/k. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc
A streaming algorithm for 2-center with outliers in high dimensions
, Article Computational Geometry: Theory and Applications ; Volume 60 , 2017 , Pages 26-36 ; 09257721 (ISSN) ; Zarrabi Zadeh, H ; Sharif University of Technology
2017
Abstract
We study the 2-center problem with outliers in high-dimensional data streams. Given a stream of points in arbitrary d dimensions, the goal is to find two congruent balls of minimum radius covering all but at most z points. We present a (1.8+ε)-approximation streaming algorithm, improving over the previous (4+ε)-approximation algorithm available for the problem. The space complexity and update time of our algorithm are poly(d,z,1/ε), independent of the size of the stream. © 2016 Elsevier B.V

Abstract
It is proved that every n × n Latin square has a partial transversal of length at least n - O (log2 n). The previous papers proving these results (including one by the second author) not only contained an error, but were sloppily written and quite difficult to understand. We have corrected the error and improved the clarity. © 2008

Abstract
A simple method for the formation of inclusion complex of [60]fullerene with two O2N2-donor aza-crown macrocyclic ligands was introduced. The products were characterized using UV-vis and IR spectroscopies as well as HPLC, and ESI mass spectrometry. The ESI mass and elemental analysis data revealed that the ratio of macroring:[60]fullerene were not the same. The binding capability of the macrorings as well as the number of the macroring addends to [60]fullerene were investigated using thermogravimetric analysis (TG) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Considering percentage mass loss in different steps of TG and the enthalpy changes in DSC found for each of these products, the number...

Abstract
In this paper an approach based on system identification is used for fault detection in a nuclear reactor. A continuous-time Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) is presented, which allows the parameters of the nonlinear system to be estimated. Also a fault tolerant control system is designed for the nuclear reactor during power changes operation. The proposed controller is an adaptive critic-based neuro-fuzzy controller. Performance of the controller in terms of transient response and robustness against failures is very good and considerable
