, Article 4th Advanced International Conference on Telecommunications, AICT 2008, Athens, 8 June 2008 through 13 June 2008 ; 2008 , Pages 283-286 ; 9780769531625 (ISBN) ; Sharif University of Technology
2008
Abstract
A more general class of broadcast channels with conditionally independent message sets is defined and its capacity region is determined using Marton's inner bound and the outer bound considered by Nair and El Gamal. The capacity region for this class of channels includes the capacity region for broadcast channels with degraded message sets, semi-deterministic broadcast channels, deterministic broadcast channels with and without common information, less noisy and (special) more capable broadcast channels. © 2008 IEEE
New achievable rate and a certain capacity result for a stochastic two relay network with no interference
, Article IET Communications ; Volume 3, Issue 7 , 2009 , Pages 1153-1162 ; 17518628 (ISSN) ; Aref, M. R ; Sharif University of Technology
2009
Abstract
Gastpar and Vetterli named the ad hoc networks with one randomly selected source-destination pair as relay networks, and they suggested using arbitrary network coding in order to increase the overall efficiency. Here, the relay network is investigated with two relays, no interference and a new achievable rate is obtained using a new network coding (decode-and-broadcast). The obtained achievable rate (i) gives the lower bound for general relay channel, obtained by Cover and El Gamal, but with a slight difference owing to no interference assumption at the receiver, (ii) includes the one relay rates of a two-level relay channel studied by Gupta and Kumar using point-to-point coding, (iii)...
Unified approach to the capacity evaluation of the relay channel
, Article IET Communications ; Volume 3, Issue 7 , 2009 , Pages 1208-1215 ; 17518628 (ISSN) ; Aref, M. R ; Sharif University of Technology
2009
Abstract
The authors indicate the dependence between the inputs of the relay channel with one auxiliary random variable as Cover, El-Gamal and Salehi have done for the multiple access channel with arbitrarily correlated sources. Then, by considering broadcast and multiple access sub-channels in the relay channel, the authors describe the essential role of the relay with special Markovity conditions on the auxiliary random variable and channel input-outputs, and unify most of known capacity theorems into one capacity theorem. The capacity theorem potentially may be applicable to a more general class of relay channels including at least the relay channels with known capacity. © The Institution of...
On the devroye-mitran-tarokh rate region for the cognitive radio channel
, Article IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications ; Volume 8, Issue 7 , 2009 , Pages 3458-3461 ; 15361276 (ISSN) ; Aref, M. R ; Sharif University of Technology
2009
Abstract
An achievable rate region for the genie-aided cognitive radio channel is obtained using the celebrated HanKobayashi jointly decoding strategy for the interference channel and the Gel'fand-Pinsker coding scheme for channels with side information known at the transmitter. The achievable rate region is then simplified by Fourier-Motzkin elimination. The obtained achievable rate region (i) extends the Chong-Motani-Garg region for the interference channel to the cognitive channel and (ii) is a simplified description of the Devroye-Mitran-Tarokh rate region for the genie-aided cognitive radio channel. © 2009 IEEE

Capacity of Almost General Relay Channel and Aref Network with Random Links
, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology ; Aref, Mohammad Reza (Supervisor)
Abstract
First, we review in an appropriate way the researches regarding building blocks of a wireless network (Shannon channel, multiple access channel, broadcast channel, interference channel, relay channel) and then: • We consider two cases for a relay and describe the essential role of the relay with three Markovity conditions; define Almost General Relay Channel with Decode-And-Forward (AGRCDAF) strategy and determine its capacity. Then, we prove that our capacity theorem not only includes all known capacity theorems as its special cases but also potentially is applicable to other relay channels and is validated by its consistency with previous results related to special cases of broadcast and...

Abstract
A variational theory (VT), in which the potential energy of a real system is evaluated relative to the hard-sphere system, was used to investigate the medium's effects on the pair potential parameters. By adding the medium's effects to the isolated pair potential, the concept of an 'effective pair potential' (EPP) was introduced. The EPP parameters were compared with those of the average effective pair potential (AEPP) for Ar, which showed the importance of the medium effects and the long range interactions of the AEPP in dense fluids. The study showed that the depth parameter of the AEPP is much larger than that of the EPP

Abstract
Inclusion of nano-clays into hydrogels is an efficient approach to produce nanocomposite hydrogels. The introduction of nano-clay into hydrogels causes an increase in water absorbency. In the present work, Nanocomposite hydro-gels based on kappa-carrageenan were synthesized using sodium montmorillonite as nano-clay. Acrylamide and meth-ylenebisacrylamide were used as monomer and crosslinker, respectively. The structure of nanocomposite hydrogels was investigated by XRD and SEM techniques. Swelling behavior of nanocomposite hydrogels was studied by varying clay and carrageenan contents as well as methylenebisacrylamide concentration. An optimum swelling capacity was achieved at 12% of sodium...

Abstract
In the present work, specimens were cut out from St-37 plates with 19 mm thickness. The thickness of plates was reduced to 12.5 mm by milling and grinding operations. Then a standard V-shaped fillet was made on one edge of the plates. Two plates were butt-welded by standard metal arc gas (MAG) welding process. Residual stresses induced by welding were measured on 20 specimens by centre hole drilling. Load controlled axial fatigue tests were carried out to determine the fatigue life of specimens. Crack growth rates were obtained from experiment. Fractography of specimens was performed. Genetic Algorithm (GA) was employed for prediction of residual stress value in weldments using the crack...
Probabilistic analysis of welding residual stress on fatigue crack growth
, Article Arabian Journal for Science and Engineering ; Volume 34, Issue 1 C , 2009 , Pages 195-205 ; 13198025 (ISSN) ; Farrahi, G. H ; Fadaee, A ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
The qualitative effects of residual stress parameters on fatigue crack growth are investigated using Monte Carlo probabilistic analysis technique. These parameters include the maximum residual stress,σ0, half-width of the tensile residual stress region, b, and the redistribution of residual stress parameter, β. A normal distribution is assumed for all parameters considered in the investigation and fatigue life is determined using Forman equation. The results indicate that: (i) fatigue life decreases nonlinearly if the mean of random maximum residual stress and the half-width of tensile residual stress region increases; (ii) fatigue life increases nonlinearly if the rate of residual stress...

Abstract
In this work effect of composition changes of injection gas, CH4 + CO2, on the performance of immiscible WAG injection in light oil, 41 oAPI, which has been rarely attended in the available literature is investigated. Presence of CO2 helps to reduce the MMP of CH4 significantly. Core flood experiments are conducted at reservoir conditions and fixed flow rate of 0.5cc/min on a sandstone sample with the brine concentration of 5000 ppm, and the influence of injection gas composition as well as WAG ratio on oil recovery is investigated. Different mole percents of methane in mixture, 0%, to 100% are examined, and the tests continued to ten alternate cycles with a slug size of 0.1 pore volumes and...
Muscle-driven forward dynamics simulation for the study of differences in muscle function during stair ascent and descent
, Article Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part H: Journal of Engineering in Medicine ; October 1, 2009 Vol.223: 863-874 ; Meghdari, A ; Vossoughi, G. R ; Sharif University of Technology
Abstract
The main scope of this study is to analyse muscle-driven forward dynamics simulation of stair locomotion to understand the functional differences of individual muscles during the movement. A static optimization was employed to minimize a performance criterion based on the muscle energy consumption to resolve muscle redundancy during forward dynamics simulation. The proposed method was employed to simulate a musculoskeletal system with ten degrees of freedom in the sagittal plane and containing 18 Hill-type musculotendon actuators per leg. Simulation results illustrated that simulated joint kinematics closely tracked experimental quantities with root-mean-squared errors less than 1 degree. In...

Abstract
The effect of the autofrettage process on high pressure cylinders has been investigated. Both numerical and experimental techniques have been used for the investigation. It was observed that the best autofrettage pressure for raising the pressure capacity of the cylinder was the pressure Py2 which is just sufficient to bring the outer surface of the cylinder to yielding. Pressures higher than Py2 will have the inverse effect. It was found that the number of autofrettage stages has no effect on pressure capacity. It was also shown that to reduce the flow stress within the wall of the cylinder, the autofrettage pressure must be greater than the working pressure. For pressures lower than...
Modular framework kinematic and fuzzy reward reinforcement learning analysis of a radially symmetric six-legged robot

Abstract
Hexapod robots gives us the ability to study walking robots without facing problems such as stability in many aspects. It has a great deal of flexibility in movement even if a leg becomes malfunctioned. Radially symmetric (hexagonal) hexapods have more flexibility in movement than rectangular leg alignments. Because of symmetry they can move in any direction and time efficiently. Inverse kinematic problem of this kind of hexapods is solved through a modular mobile view considering six degrees of freedom for the trunk. Then typical tripod and wave gaits are analyzed and simulated through the presented formulation. In Reinforcement Learning algorithm for walking it is important how to make...
Unusual magnetic phases in the strong interaction limit of two-dimensional topological band insulators in transition metal oxides
, Article Physical Review B - Condensed Matter and Materials Physics ; Volume 86, Issue 20 , 2012 ; 10980121 (ISSN) ; Langari, A ; Fiete, G. A ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
The expected phenomenology of noninteracting topological band insulators (TBIs) is now largely theoretically understood. However, the fate of TBIs in the presence of interactions remains an active area of research with novel, interaction-driven topological states possible, as well as new exotic magnetic states. In this work we study the magnetic phases of an exchange Hamiltonian arising in the strong interaction limit of a Hubbard model on the honeycomb lattice whose noninteracting limit is a two-dimensional TBI recently proposed for the layered heavy transition metal oxide compound (Li,Na) 2IrO 3. By a combination of analytical methods and exact diagonalization studies on finite-size...

Abstract
The High-Performance Light Water Reactor (HPLWR) is the European version of the Supercritical-pressure Water Cooled Reactor (SCWR). Light water reactors at supercritical pressure, being currently under design, are the new generation of nuclear reactors. The present article is a thermal-hydraulic analysis of the HPLWR fuel assembly cluster. The existing thermal hydraulic codes are not capable of analyzing and designing the HPLWR fuel assembly. It is necessary to introduce a new thermal-hydraulic code that can incorporate the parameters and specifications of the HPLWR fuel assembly. The governing equations include energy, mass and momentum equations beside thermal-hydraulic equations are...
