Measuring Welfare Effects Arising from Fluctuations In Oil Revenue in a Non-independent Monetary Policy

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hojjati Najaf Abadi, Ali (Author) ; Madanizadeh, Ali (Supervisor) ; Rahmati, Mohammad Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The abstract is the most important section of the thesis because many readers limit most of their reading to abstracts, saving in-depth reading for specific theses. It should give the reader a "preview" of what's to come. The abstract should emphasize new and important aspects of the study or observations. The purpose of the abstract is to allow researchers to decide whether or not to read the whole thesis. The abstract is what researchers read first to decide if the thesis is important, interesting, and it allows them to assess the relevance of a thesis to their own research, without having to read the entire thesis. Thus, it is crucial that the abstract both summarize succinctly the key...

A procedure for obtaining a behavioral description for the control logic of a non-linear pipeline

, Article Proceedings of the ASP - DAC 2004 Asia and South Pacific Design Automation Conference - 2004, Yokohama, 27 January 2004 through 30 January 2004 ; 2004 , Pages 86-91 Najaf Abadi, H. H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2004
    Abstract
Much attention has been directed to different aspects of the design of pipelines. Design of the control logic of non-linear pipelines has however, been considered as a subsidiary issue in that an RTL description for such logic can easily be obtained from a behavioral description, with the use of widely available synthesis tools. But, as the complexity of a non-linear pipeline increases, so does the complexity of the control logic. The complexity may be to an extent that obtaining even a behavioral description for the control logic is rendered difficult. This paper focuses on further automating the development of systems consisting of non-linear or multi-function pipelines by proposing an...

An empirical performance analysis of minimal and non-minimal routing in cube-based OTIS multicomputers

    , Article Journal of High Speed Networks ; Volume 16, Issue 2 , 2007 , Pages 133-155 ; 09266801 (ISSN) Hashemi Najaf Abadi, H ; Sarbazi Azad, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2007
    Abstract
In this study, the performance of virtual cut-through switching in the cube-based OTIS architecture, an optoelectronic interconnection architecture for multicomputer systems, is empirically analyzed. Deadlock-free deterministic and adaptive minimal path routing algorithms for this architecture are introduced, and the effects of different network and traffic parameters on average message latency are investigated. This analysis presents a relatively more realistic view of the OTIS architecture than that presented in previous work by considering issues related to a lower level of abstraction (the routing and switching of messages). Among other results, the analysis indicates that depending on...

    Abstract
In this paper, routing properties of cube-based optoelectronic OTIS networks are explored. We show emulations of various cubical network topologies on their OTIS augmented variants, including the nD grid networks, shuffle-exchange, and de Brujin networks. An analytical performance model for OTIS-cube networks is proposed. The model is validated by means of comparison with rigorously obtained simulation results. Using this model, the performance characteristics of the OTIS-hypercube network are evaluated in view of a number of different constraints. Moreover, we compare the performance characteristics of the OTIS-hypercube with that of equivalent fully-electronic networks under various...

Multicast communication in OTIS-hypercube multi-computer systems

    , Article International Journal of High Performance Computing and Networking ; Volume 4, Issue 3-4 , 2006 , Pages 161-173 ; 17400562 (ISSN) Najaf abadi, H. H ; Sarbazi azad, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2006
    Abstract
The ability to perform multicast communication efficiently in parallel computing systems is increasingly becoming an essential feature of these systems. Therefore, any emerging parallel architecture must be able to provide effective multicasting performance. OTIS-based multi-computer systems are parallel systems that efficiently exploit optical connections between distant nodes, while using electronic connections for physically close processors. No previous work has attempted to determine an optimal multicast communication scheme for OTIS networks. This paper presents two approaches to implement efficient multicast communication in wormhole-routed OTIS networks, for the two different...

    Abstract
In optoelectronic OTIS architectures, electrical and optical interconnects are used for local and global communication, respectively. Interesting instances of the OTIS architecture are the OTIS-hypercube and OTIS-mesh. This paper conducts a performance evaluation and comparison of these networks under different structural conditions and traffic loads. All judgments made, are based on observations from extensive simulation results of the interconnection networks. We conclude that, when the OTIS-hypercube and equivalent 2-D OTIS-mesh are compared under the constraint of equal bisection bandwidth, the performance of the OTIS-hypercube is of superior performance. We however show that the...

Distributed Encoding System in the Presence of Adversarial Sources

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Abadi Khooshemehr, Nastaran (Author) ; Maddah Ali, Mohammad Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In communications systems, coding is used to combat channel errors. The redundancy introduced by coding enables the detection and/or correction of errors occurring in the channel. In addition to communications systems, coding is also beneficial in various other systems such as distributed storage systems and blockchain systems to cope with node failures, data erasures, and adversarial behaviors attempting to modify information. In existing applications of coding, it is generally assumed that the encoding operation is performed correctly and without errors, and errors are applied to the encoded data. In recent years, applications have emerged where the assumption of error-free encoding is not...

Effects of Vehicle Characteristics on Accident Severity; Comparison Between Different Types of Accidents

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Najaf, Pooya (Author) ; Kermanshah, Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Evaluation of the effects of vehicle characteristics on accident severity is the main objective of this research. In addition to some static and dynamic features of passenger cars, some characteristics of driver and roadway are studied, too. In this research, driver injury severity is modeled as accident severity index. First, the severity of head-on, rear-end, angle and sideswipe accidents are modeled using Binary Logit models. Then, Multinomial Logit models are applied to develop driver injury severity models for head-on and rollover accidents. Finally, Nested Logit model is developed to model severity of head-on accidents to study the performance of different types of Logit models....

Application of Simulation Optimization in Buffer Allocation Problem Using Genetic Algorithm and Simulated Annealing

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ramezani Ali Abadi, Majid (Author) ; Kianfar, Farhad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Simulation optimization has been one of the most important topics in recent years. It is especially useful when the objective function cannot be computed directly or some of the parameters are stochastic. Buffer allocation problem is one of the important problems related to production lines. In this problem the objective is to determine the buffers between workstations so that the throughput is maximized. Non-linear and combinatorial nature of the problem, stochastic factors like machine breakdown or processing times and most importantly lack of a distinct relation for the objective function are the reasons of using simulation ...

Naïve Realism and its Metaphysical Considerations: A Question Based Approach to the Phenomenological Tradition

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Afshar, Masoud (Author) ; Taheri Khoram Abadi, Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
How is it possible for mind to be directed to the world? Or for it to be opened to the world? This question – formulated as the problem of knowledge - has been the central question of the modern philosophy. Rediscovering of the concept of "intentionality" as the mark of the mental by Franz Brentano, Contemporary philosophy succeeded in addressing this central question in a more direct and explicit a way. Intentional character of mind is more obvious in sensory experiences. Perception seems to be the minds openness to the world. But the possibility of having illusory or hallucinatory experiences challenges that very conception of perceptual experiences as openness. In analytic philosophy...

Studying the Effect of Rubber Type on Mechanical Behavior and Scratch Resistance of Rubber-Modified Copolypropylene

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Najaf Tomaraei, Golnaz (Author) ; Bagheri, Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Polypropylene (PP) has a great market among the commodity thermoplastics. However, its application as an engineering plastic is limited due to the poor toughness and impact strength, especially at low temperatures and high deformation rates. To overcome this shortcoming, elastomeric modifiers have been used in engineering applications and thus rubber-modified PP blends have become a field of growing interest. In this regard, there have been great advances in blending technologies and also catalysts used for polymerization of olefins. Among these advances, the most applicable ones are impact polypropylene copolymers and also the advent of new types of olefinic copolymers that can replace EPR...

    Abstract
Road accidents are currently one the main existing problems and a big challenge in Iran that is putting the lives of Iranian citizens in danger. Each accident is the result of a complex interplay between road users, vehicles, roads and environment. One of the main goals of accident data analysis is to identify and determine the main factors of a road accident. The dataset used here was obtained from the road traffic police and is stored in 3 different databases and corresponds to the accidents that happened between years 1390 and 1395 according to the Shamsi calendar. In this thesis, in order to deal with the inherent complexity and heterogeneity of the accident data, we will first introduce...

    Abstract
To help walking, using assistive devices can be considered to reduce the loads caused by weight and to effectively decrease the propulsive forces. In this study, a mobility Saddle-Assistive Device (S-AD) supporting body weight while walking was evaluated on two healthy volunteers. This device is based on the support of body weight against gravity with the help of a saddle, which is not used in other passive mobility assistive devices. To prove the efficiency of this device, the experimental results obtained while walking with this device were compared with those related to walking without the assistive device. The results showed that this device could significantly reduce the forces and...

    Abstract
In this paper, the coupled equations of nonlinear vibrations of a rigid two-dimensional rotor supported on tilting-pad-journal-bearing under harmonic excitation have been studied using second-order multiple scales method. By considering a nonlinear quadratic model for tilting-pad-journal-bearings, the governing coupled nonlinear differential equations of motion are presented. The frequency response function of the system, the effect of excitation force on the response, and stability of the system are discussed in different operating conditions using the method of multiple scales and validated with a numerical method. The results show that the system may have hardening or softening behavior...

    Abstract
The majority of the people with incomplete spinal cord injury lose their walking ability, due to the weakness of their muscle motors in providing torque. As a result, developing assistive devices to improve their conditionis of great importance. In this study, a combined application of the saddle-assistive device (S-AD) and mechanical medial linkage or thosis was evaluated to improve the walking ability in patients with spinal cord injury in the gait laboratory. This mobile assistive device is called the saddle-assistive device equipped with medial linkage or thosis (S-ADEM). In this device, a mechanical orthosis was used in a wheeled walker as previously done in the literature. Initially,...

    Abstract
Physical problems caused by fractures, aging, stroke, and accidents can reduce foot power; these, in the long term, can dwindle the muscles of the waist, thighs, and legs. These conditions provide the basis for the invalidism of the harmed people. In this study, a saddle-walker was designed and evaluated to help people suffering from spinal cord injury and patients with lower limb weakness. This S-AD works based on body weight support against the previously report designs. This saddle-walker consisted of a non-powered four-wheel walker helping to walk and a powered mechanism for the sit-to-stand (STS) transfer. A set of experiments were done on the STS in the use of the standard walker and...

On the Stability of Rotating Cylinder Conveying Flow in an External Fluid Medium

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hojjati, Mohammad (Author) ; Dehghani Firoozabadi, Rouhollah (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The present study aims at investigating the stability of flexible spinning cylinders conveying flow in an external fluid Medium. Using the linearized Navier-Stokes equations for the flow, a two-dimensional model is developed governing the fluid motion. The resultant force exerted on the flexible cylinder wall due to the fluid interactions is calculated as a function of the lateral acceleration. Applying the Hamilton principle, the governing equations of flexural vibration of the rotary flexible cylinder mounted on simply supported axles are derived. Having the forces due to the conveying fluid calculated and substituting into the governing equations, a coupled field governing equations of...

Big Data Application Performance Prediction and Heterogeneous Resource Recommendation in Cloud

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Aseman Manzar, Mohammd Mohsen (Author) ; Movaghar Rahim Abadi, Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In the last years, we have seen a rapid growth of data generation that leads to an increasing need for data analysis and big data technologies. Meanwhile, cloud computing witnessed great popularity and has become one of the best platforms for big data analytics due to its flexibility and scalability. However, there is not an obvious method for choosing the right cluster configuration for running big data jobs in clouds. Because different big data applications, workloads and cloud configurations can lead to different costs. Moreover, a heterogeneous cluster can use the benefits of distinguished properties of each machine to reduce the cost and execution time of the big data application. The...

Effect of Low Power CW Laser (He-Ne)on Artemia Cyst

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hojjati Vayghan, Reza (Author) ; Sadighi Bonabi, Rasoul (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Artemia (brine shrimp) is a genus of crustaceans that lives in saltwater and due to having unique features, in producing the food and nutrients needed for larvae and other types of farmed sea creatures, is of great importance. In its natural environment under certain conditions, Artemia produces cysts that float at the water surface and are driven ashore by wind and waves. These cysts are inactive and do not develop further as long as they are kept dry. Upon immersion in seawater, the biconcave cysts hydrate and become spherical and, within the shell, the embryo resumes its interrupted metabolism. After about 20 h the outer membrane of the cyst breaking and the embryo appears, surrounded by...
