, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hosseini, Niloofar Sadat (Author) ; Mazaheri, Karim (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this thesis we are going to improve an ultrasonic flowmeter accuracy by considering the influence of different parameters like temperature, pressure, etc. Firstl of all different cases of flow condition in which ultrasonic flowmeter may work are specified, then velocity and temperature profile of pipe flow are determined using Fluent software. In thr next step ultrasonic pulses transmitted are simulated by the use of code written in Matlab to find wave travel time in the flow. Evetually an accurate relation of calibration for flowmeter is determined by the use of travel time and all other flow properties to evaluate the accuracy of flowmeter in diffent cases. Relation extracted can be...

Utilizing network coding for file dessimination in peer-to-peer systems

    , Article 3rd International Conference on New Technologies, Mobility and Security, NTMS 2009, 20 December 2009 through 23 December 2009, Cairo ; 2009 ; 9781424462735 (ISBN) Hosseini Sohei, M ; Movaghar, A ; Sadat Bathaee, N ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
Network coding was first introduced in information theory for increasing the multicast rate in the networks with directed links. We can model many of the content distribution networks and overlay networks with such a network. Therefore, the solutions introduced in information theory can be used in these networks. In this paper, we analyze using of network coding in uncoordinated cooperative content distribution systems. Reaching the optimum performance in an uncoordinated system needs blocks of the system to be "equally important". In that case, we can retrieve the whole data without need of central controller or complex algorithms. In part of this paper, we exactly define the concept of...

    Abstract
Efficient sunlight harvesting is of great significance for environmental remediation through photocatalysis. Herein, very small (20 nm) upconverter SrF2:Yb,Tm@CaF2:Yb@Fluorine-doped TiO2heteronanoparticles (denoted as UCNPs@TiO2) with strong UV-blue emission and broadband photocatalytic performance were prepared via a facile three-step hydrothermal method for the first time. The SrF2:Yb,Tm upconverter nanoparticles (NPs) were produced as the light-emitting core, epitaxially grown CaF2:Yb as the middle shell to enhance the upconversion luminescence output and TiO2as the photocatalyst outermost layer. Superior photocatalytic functioning of UCNPs@TiO2was affirmed through methylene blue (MB)...

A New Method for Measuring very Low Variation in Physical Parameters based on the Sensitivity to Conditions of Chaotic Systems

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Seddighi Renani, Jamal (Author) ; Zohoor, Hasan (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Since the beginning of human civilization, improving the methods of measuring and identifying changes in order to improve the level of comfort and safety of human civilization is inevitable. The intrinsic property of high sensitivity to system conditions in chaos phenomena has led some researchers to use this feature for purposes of identifying and measuring changes. The most important bugs of previous researches in this area are the complexity, lack of coherence and dependence on the nominal parameters. By analyzing the effect of the type and magnitude of the initial deviation in a system parameter on all the characteristics of the Duffing system response in the chaotic regime, was observed...

Optimal transactive market operations with distribution system operators

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Smart Grid ; 2017 ; 19493053 (ISSN) Kabiri Renani, Y ; Ehsan, M ; Shahidehpour, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2017
    Abstract
Distribution system operator (DSO) has traditionally been responsible for the reliable operation of power distribution systems. The advent of distributed energy resources (DERs) and microgrids in distribution networks has required a new platform for DSOs. The new DSO, which is for the most part an independent agent, is responsible for aggregating a widely dispersed DERs (which include small thermal generation units, energy storage, and demand response) and flexible loads in electricity markets. DSO coordinates and balances the transactive dispatch of supply and demand at the distribution level and links wholesale and retail electricity markets. In this paper, a framework for the day-ahead...

Day-ahead self-scheduling of a transmission-constrained GenCo with variable generation units using the incomplete market information

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Sustainable Energy ; Volume 8, Issue 3 , 2017 , Pages 1260-1268 ; 19493029 (ISSN) Kabiri Renani, Y ; Ehsan, M ; Shahidehpour, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2017
    Abstract
In this paper, a self-generation scheduling method for a power generation company (GenCo) with renewable generation units is presented. In the proposed method, locational market prices (LMPs) are calculated using the incomplete information on competing market participants by simulating the ISO's market clearing program and considering the effect of physical limitations of transmission lines. The errors associated with forecasted LMP and renewable production are modeled in the GenCo's generation scheduling using a robust optimization approach. The scheduling problem is modeled as a mixed-integer linear programming which is solved by a CPLEX solver in GAMS. An eight-bus system is employed to...

Trade in Intermediate Goods and The Welfare Gain from International Trade

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ahmadi Renani, Saber (Author) ; Madanizadeh, Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this thesis, I introduce a general equilibrium model of international trade that takes into account the industry linkages between intermediate goods and consumption goods producers to quantitatively measure the countries’ welfare gains and losses from different trade policies on intermediate and consumption goods. My model extends the inter-industry trade model of Ricardo (1817), intra-industry model of Krugman (1980), and firm heterogeneous model of Melitz (2003). Reduction of tariffs affect welfare of countries through direct effects on income, cost of export, and cost of input bundles of production (labor and intermediate goods), and indirectly through changes in term of trades, and...

    Abstract
In this paper, a robust distribution system expansion planning (DSP) approach is presented to supply the load growth locally and move toward nearly zero energy local distribution areas (LDAs). In the proposed approach, a distribution system operator (DSO) is responsible for secure and optimum operation of LDAs. Therefore, investors on distribution system upgrades use this approach to maximize the profit on investments by determining the installation year of new distribution feeders and energy resources, distributed energy resource (DER) placements and sizes considered by corresponding DSOs. The accurate AC power flow solution is used and mathematical methods are developed to model the DSP as...

    Abstract
This research intends to investigate demand for children among Iranian Urban Households in an intra-household bargaining decision process. Using, Household’s Expenditures Survey of Iran(2008), a count regression technique which takes into acount the over-dispersion and under-dispersion of Poisson scheme is specified as function of intra-household bargaining factors, and family’s characteristics. Our findings confirm the significance and a priory expected directions of distribution factors (intra-household bargaining power) and household’s characteristic, effects. Robustness checks verify the accuracy and appropriateness of the generalized Poisson. To examine the exogeneity explanatory...

Cluster-based adaptive SVM: a latent subdomains discovery method for domain adaptation problems

    , Article Computer Vision and Image Understanding ; Volume 162 , 2017 , Pages 116-134 ; 10773142 (ISSN) Sadat Mozafari, A ; Jamzad, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2017
    Abstract
Machine learning algorithms often suffer from good generalization in testing domains especially when the training (source) and test (target) domains do not have similar distributions. To address this problem, several domain adaptation techniques have been proposed to improve the performance of the learning algorithms when they face accuracy degradation caused by the domain shift problem. In this paper, we focus on the non-homogeneous distributed target domains and propose a new latent subdomain discovery model to divide the target domain into subdomains while adapting them. It is expected that applying adaptation on subdomains increase the rate of detection in comparing with the situation...

Indoor Noise Pollution Modeling: A Case Study on Resalat Tunnel

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Sadat Mortazavi, Mandana (Author) ; Vaziri, Manouchehr (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Noise or noise pollution, is defined as an unwanted sound, produced mostly by motor vehicles in urban areas. If the noise exceeds its limit, adverse effects on users and citizens are expected. Thus the assessment of the noise level and its comparison with allowable values is mandatory. Traffic induced noise depends upon different factors such as traffic, weather, and, sound barriers. Noise pollution study has a long history all over the world. Many studies, mostly representing the outdoor noise pollution models, have been done in recent years. This paper presents an assessment of traffic-induced noise in a heavily traveled tunnel, locally referred to as Resalat tunnel, which is located in...

The Effect of Travel Time Reliability on Morning Peak Travellers route choice in Large Metropolitan Area

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Sadat Mirjafari, Parisa (Author) ; Poorzahedy, Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Data collected from street networks show that travel time in urban street networks is a stochastic variable, whose range of variation increases with the congestion level. Work and school trips comprise the major part of morning peak volumes, whose common characteristic is that they need to be made on time. For this reason, these travelers are pessimistic in their route choice, and try to choose routes which are more reliable. Travel time standard deviation is one of the common measures for estimating travel time reliability that is related to properties of day-to-day travel time distribution on a particular route. Based on the empirical data collected from Tehran street network, this paper...

Using Information Beyond Text to Generate Language Embedding Vectors

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Zeinab Sadat Taghavi (Author) ; Sameti, Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this thesis, we introduce a novel Artificial Intelligence (AI) system inspired by the philosophical and psychoanalytical concept of imagination as a ``Re-construction of Experiences". Our AI system is equipped with an imagination-inspired module that bridges the gap between textual inputs and other modalities, enriching the derived information based on previously learned experiences. A unique feature of our system is its ability to formulate independent perceptions of inputs. This leads to unique interpretations of a concept that may differ from human interpretations but are equally valid, a phenomenon we term as ``Interpretable Misunderstanding". We employ large-scale models,...

    Abstract
In this paper we consider a cooperative communication systems over Rayleigh fading channels. The system utilizes a combination of incremental and selective decode-and-forward (ISDF) relaying protocols. The symbol error rate (SER) of M-PSK modulation for the ISDF protocol is derived. Using an approximation of the SER expression, the optimal power allocation is investigated. In order to reduce the complexity of the receiver, we used a modified version of the ISDF protocol which does not use the storage or retransmission of the first phase signal. We also derived optimal power allocation coefficient for modified ISDF. It has been noted that for the optimal power allocation in the ISDF protocol,...
