Design and Fabrication of Micro-Electrode Based Neural Probe
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Fardmanesh, Mehdi (Supervisor)
Abstract
Neural probes, as brain-machine interface devices, are essential tools for recording electrophysiological signals or neural stimulation of a single neuron or a set of them. Nowadays, neural probes are widely used by cognitive and neuroscience researchers to understand brain functions in order to develop new treatments and therapies for neurological disorders. Making neural probes based on microelectrodes has the advantages of compatibility of their construction with the use of integrated circuit microfabrication technologies, as well as the ability to be made based on flexible materials. The purpose of this research is to design and manufacture a neural probe based on microelectrode to...
PL-MAC; ProLonging network lifetime with a MAC layer approach in Wireless Sensor Networks

Abstract
Energy consumption is one of the most important design criteria in Wireless Sensor Networks. Sensor nodes are expected to be battery-equipped. Due to their working environments, recharging or replacing batteries for each node is difficult and uneconomical. So prolonging the service lifetime of sensor nodes is a critical issue. The MAC protocol for WSNs plays a very important role in the control of energy consumption. Many of proposed MAC protocols attempt only to prolong the network lifetime for energy-efficiency. In this paper, we are going to reduce end-to-end latency in addition to extending the network lifetime. To reach this purpose, we propose a new adaptively ProLong MAC protocol...
Native and Nonnative English Speakers' Speech Act Production:Compliment and Compliment Response
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Alemi, Minoo (Supervisor) ; Khosravizadeh, Parvaneh (Co-Supervisor)
Abstract
The present study, examined native English speakers and nonnative English learners in terms of Interlanguage Pragmatics (ILP), more specifically intercultural variations in performing the two speech acts of compliments and compliment responses. The study employed both qualitative and quantitative analysis with regard to the research questions. First, the data was collected from 50 Americans and 50 Iranians through compliment and compliment response Discourse Completion Tests (DCTs). Then, patterns of strategies from natives and nonnatives productions, were extracted. Regarding compliments, 8 strategies were found including Appreciation or Admiration followed by Explicitness, Acknowledgement...

Abstract
A neural probe made from a thin semiconductor material using an affordable microfabrication method is fabricated and characterized based on conventional measurements. The 4 microelectrodes with a surface area of 30 imes 100 mu mathrm{m}{2}, as well as the tracks and pads of the probe were constructed using a thin layer of gold (Au) material, with an insulating layer of SU-8 used to cover the corresponding tracks. To assess the performance of the fabricated probe, both Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) and artificial stimulation methods were used to characterize its properties. The microelectrode dimensions were specifically chosen to provide low impedance characteristics, which...
