Modeling and Analysis of Angular Mis-alignments of Lower Extremity and Prediction of the Results of Osteotomy Surgery

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Iravani Mohammad Abadi, Mina (Author) ; Farahmand, Farzam (Supervisor) ; Hoviattalab, Maryam (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Varus-valgus deformity is the improper alignment of lower extremities, which results in the increment of the local stress within the cartilage and the consequent alteration of the performance mechanism of the soft tissues around the knee joint. This accounts for changes within the movement pattern and thus further deformities, which, when continued, can lead to more serious damage in the form of osteoarthritis. The aforementioned cycle can be prevented through the conduction ofosteotomy; a surgical procedure in which the addition or removal of a bone wedge can correct the improper alignment. The correct design and conduction of osteotomy in terms of the location, angle, and size of the...

    Sustainability Assessment of Embankment Construction

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Iravani, Pooya (Author) ; Alvanchi, Amin (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Damming projects always have been important while construction, operation and even demolition due to their major effects on society, environment and economy. Although researchers have focused on one or a few phases of construction projects to develop sustainable infrastructures, the research community has to consider long term effects of developments too. There are a variety of such effects that ignoring them will cause construction of not convenient infrastructures i.e. air pollution and over-consumption of energy resources while construction, operation and demolition. Therefore, it is suggested to consider life cycle assessments to include all bad effects in all phases of a project. Dams...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Iravani, Parniya (Author) ; Ghorbani, Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Connecting titanium and aluminum alloys is widely used in different industries such as transportation, chemical, aircraft manufacturing, etc. Friction stir welding is one of the methods of joining these two metals. In order to obtain a sound joint, the formation of intermetallic phases in the interface must be controlled. One of the ways to control these phases is the use of an interlayer, which in this research is the interlayer applied by plasma electrolytic oxidation method with different current densities and coating times. In this regards, first the optimal parameters of friction stir welding were determined. Then, Ti6Al4V and Al6061-t6 welding was performed in the presence of...

    Abstract
Present study is aimed to investigate the relationship between blade shape of Savonius rotor and its optimum overlap, an important parameter that can improve the rotor's performance superbly. To set a relation between rotor's shape and its overlap, a new parameter called "trailing angle" was introduced in this study and by a novel design method, several models were designed to represent a wide range of trailing angles. The investigation has been carried out by using Reynolds Stress Method (RSM) through ANSYS Fluent commercial software package. The application of the method was validated by comparing the results of a conventional model with experimental data acquired from one of the...

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery ; Volume 26, Issue 2 , 2011 , Pages 517-525 ; 08858977 (ISSN) Bahrani, B ; Karimi, H ; Iravani, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
This paper analytically determines the nondetection zone (NDZ) of an active islanding detection method, and proposes a solution to obviate the NDZ. The method actively injects a negative-sequence current through the interface voltage-sourced converter (VSC) of a distributed generation (DG) unit, as a disturbance signal for islanding detection. The estimated magnitude of the corresponding negative-sequence voltage at the PCC is used as the islanding detection signal. In this paper, based on a laboratory test system, the performance of the islanding detection method under UL1741 anti-islanding test conditions is evaluated. Then, determining the NDZ of the method and proposing the...

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery ; Volume 26, Issue 1 , September , 2011 , Pages 455-466 ; 08858977 (ISSN) Karimi, H ; Yazdani, A ; Iravani, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
This paper proposes a control strategy for the autonomous (islanded) operation of a four-wire, electronically-coupled distributed generation (DG) unit which can feed a highly unbalanced load, e.g., due to the presence of single-phase loads. In the grid-connected mode, the power-electronic interface of the DG unit enables the exchange of real and reactive power with the distribution network, based on the conventional dq-frame current control strategy. The current control scheme is disabled subsequent to the detection of an islanding event, and the proposed controller is activated. The proposed control strategy utilizes: i) an internal oscillator to maintain the island frequency and ii) a...

    , Article 35th Annual Conference of the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society, IECON 2009, Porto, 3 November 2009 through 5 November 2009 ; 2009 , Pages 358-362 Bahrani, B ; Karimi, H ; Iravani, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
This paper presents a decentralized control strategy for the autonomous (islanded) operation of parallel connection of two distributed generation (DG) units. The DG units are electronically interfaced to the host grid at the same point of common coupling (PCC), where the local load is also supplied. In the grid-connected mode, the voltage-sourced converter (VSC) of each DG unit controls the exchange of real and reactive power components with the host grid, based on the conventional dq-current control strategy. In the islanded mode, one of the DG units provides voltage and frequency control for the island, and the other DG unit continues to operate with the pre-islanding dq-current control...

    Abstract
This paper presents a high performance real-time simulator for power electronic systems applications and primarily intended for controller hardware-in-the-loop (CHIL) testing. The novelty of the proposed simulator resides in the massively parallel hardware architecture that efficiently exploits fine-grained parallelism without imposing severe communication overhead time that can limit the performance. The simulator enables the use of a nanosecond range simulation timestep to simulate power electronic systems. Through the use of this nanosecond range simulation timestep, the simulator minimizes the error arising from the intersimulation timestep switching phenomenon associated with CHIL. The...

    , Article IET Generation, Transmission and Distribution ; Volume 10, Issue 1 , 2016 , Pages 41-47 ; 17518687 (ISSN) Khorsandi, A ; Ashourloo, M ; Mokhtari, H ; Iravani, R ; Sharif University of Technology
Institution of Engineering and Technology  2016
    Abstract
A DC microgrid (DC-MG) provides an effective mean to integrate various sources, energy storage units and loads at a common dc-side. The droop-based, in the context of a decentralised control, has been widely used for the control of the DC-MG. However, the conventional droop control cannot achieve both accurate current sharing and desired voltage regulation. This study proposes a new adaptive control method for DC-MG applications which satisfies both accurate current sharing and acceptable voltage regulation depending on the loading condition. At light load conditions where the output currents of the DG units are well below the maximum limits, the accuracy of the current sharing process is...

Robust Estimation and Control of a Planet Lander

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ahmadvand, Reza (Author) ; Kiani, Maryam (Supervisor)
    Abstract
This study has focused on the important problem of landing on a planet as an important current and future space mission. In this regard, dynamics modeling and integrated state estimation and control problems have been investigated in different views. To this aim, first a novel concurrent representation for translational and rotational kinematics has been developed based on the extension of modified Rodrigues parameters to dual space. This parameter set, called dual modified Rodrigues parameters (DMRP), is then utilized to establish an integrated roto-translational dynamic. The proposed DMRP-based kinematics and dynamics have been verified via comparison to traditional methods of...
