, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Iravani Mohammad Abadi, Mina (Author) ; Farahmand, Farzam (Supervisor) ; Hoviattalab, Maryam (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Varus-valgus deformity is the improper alignment of lower extremities, which results in the increment of the local stress within the cartilage and the consequent alteration of the performance mechanism of the soft tissues around the knee joint. This accounts for changes within the movement pattern and thus further deformities, which, when continued, can lead to more serious damage in the form of osteoarthritis. The aforementioned cycle can be prevented through the conduction ofosteotomy; a surgical procedure in which the addition or removal of a bone wedge can correct the improper alignment. The correct design and conduction of osteotomy in terms of the location, angle, and size of the...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Iravani, Pooya (Author) ; Alvanchi, Amin (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Damming projects always have been important while construction, operation and even demolition due to their major effects on society, environment and economy. Although researchers have focused on one or a few phases of construction projects to develop sustainable infrastructures, the research community has to consider long term effects of developments too. There are a variety of such effects that ignoring them will cause construction of not convenient infrastructures i.e. air pollution and over-consumption of energy resources while construction, operation and demolition. Therefore, it is suggested to consider life cycle assessments to include all bad effects in all phases of a project. Dams...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Davood Abadi Farahani, Mohammad Hossein (Author) ; Borghei, Mehdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Petrochemicals, refineries and power plants are among the biggest water-consuming industries. Of all systems in mentioned complex, most water is consumed in the cooling tower system, of which the feed water of the cooling tower accounts for the largest portion of water demand. Drainage loss (blowdown) which constitutes the biggest portion of the feed water losses, varies greatly with changes in source water quality and cooling water treatment. Scarcity of water, large quantities of cooling tower blowdown water and increasing of water price lead to activities for blowdown water treatment to reuse. In this project two pre-treatment methods and two final membrane treatment methods were...

Probabilistic Evaluation of Steel Moment Frames with Partially Restrained Connections

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Zarei Rahmat Abadi, Davood (Author) ; Kazemi, Mohammad Taghi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Considering connections as ideally rigid or pinned is a common assumption during design and analysis of steel moment frames. However, in real world, steel connections show a non-linear behavior between these two ideal states. The aim of this research is to investigate the effect of partially restrained connections on the design and performance of two-dimensional steel moment frames under vertical and horizontal loads that are applied statically. For this aim, nonlinear finite element modeling is used in probabilistic evaluation process to assess the performance of existing structures. To capture the real behavior of structure in models, geometric and material sources of nonlinearity are...

Nondetection zone assessment of an active islanding detection method and its experimental evaluation

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery ; Volume 26, Issue 2 , 2011 , Pages 517-525 ; 08858977 (ISSN) Bahrani, B ; Karimi, H ; Iravani, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
This paper analytically determines the nondetection zone (NDZ) of an active islanding detection method, and proposes a solution to obviate the NDZ. The method actively injects a negative-sequence current through the interface voltage-sourced converter (VSC) of a distributed generation (DG) unit, as a disturbance signal for islanding detection. The estimated magnitude of the corresponding negative-sequence voltage at the PCC is used as the islanding detection signal. In this paper, based on a laboratory test system, the performance of the islanding detection method under UL1741 anti-islanding test conditions is evaluated. Then, determining the NDZ of the method and proposing the...

Robust control of an autonomous four-wire electronically-coupled distributed generation unit

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery ; Volume 26, Issue 1 , September , 2011 , Pages 455-466 ; 08858977 (ISSN) Karimi, H ; Yazdani, A ; Iravani, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
This paper proposes a control strategy for the autonomous (islanded) operation of a four-wire, electronically-coupled distributed generation (DG) unit which can feed a highly unbalanced load, e.g., due to the presence of single-phase loads. In the grid-connected mode, the power-electronic interface of the DG unit enables the exchange of real and reactive power with the distribution network, based on the conventional dq-frame current control strategy. The current control scheme is disabled subsequent to the detection of an islanding event, and the proposed controller is activated. The proposed control strategy utilizes: i) an internal oscillator to maintain the island frequency and ii) a...

    Abstract
This paper presents stability analysis of a distributed generation (DG) controller (1), in an islanded mode, based on the Mapping Theorem and the Zero Exclusion Condition, and validates the results based on a laboratory scale experimental setup. The DG unit is interfaced to the host system through a voltage-sourced converter (VSC). The control strategy regulates the load voltage at the desired value in the islanded mode, despite uncertainties in the load parameters. The frequency of the island is controlled in an open loop manner by an internal oscillator. The experimental results show that the controller provides robust voltage control for a wide range of load parameters, and even maintains...
