Abstract
One of the organizations’ main concerns is to protect sensitive data in database systems, especially the ones outsourced to untrusted service providers. An effective solution for this issue is to employ database encryption methods. Among different encryption approaches, Bucket-based method has the advantage of balancing security and performance of database operations. However, generating false-positive results in executing queries is the main drawback of this method. On the other hand, multi-join queries are one of the most critical operations executed on these stored sensitive data. Hence, acceptable processing and response time in executing multi-join queries is required. In this paper, we...

Abstract
Protecting sensitive data stored in database systems, especially in outsourced ones, has become a major concern in many organizations. One of the main possible solutions is to encrypt data before storing them on databases. Bucket-based encryption is among different approaches proposed to accomplish this goal which besides its various benefits, suffers from generating false-positive results. Multi-join queries are one of the most important operations in database systems and their usage grows rapidly in comparison to other types of queries by increasing the size of stored information. While using the decision support systems and data mining solutions are growing continuously, executing...

Abstract
Recovering ventilated air heat in direct expansion (DX) HVAC systems has extensively been researched and many solutions have been introduced until now, such as air-to-air heat recovery ventilator (HRV) units. The ventilated air from building itself or an HRV unit, has heat recovery potentials yet to be exploited, owing to its lower temperature compared with the ambient. On the other hand, the thermal performance of the DX HVAC system's air-cooled condenser deteriorates in hot climates. Therefore, to improve the DX HVAC system and air cooled condenser thermal performance simultaneously, this study proposes and analyzes a novel integrated multistage heat recovery system that first recovers the...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Jalali, Mir Abbas (Supervisor) ; Ejtehadi, Mohammad Reza (Co-Advisor)
Abstract
Aggregation of membrane proteins plays a determinative role in many biological processes، such as signal transduction, cell division and endocytosis. In the present study, we have investigated the interaction between proteins in vesicles by means of coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations. In the first step, a number of periodic lipid bilayers were simulated and their physical properties were calculated. Then, bilayers were immersed in water and converted into spherical vesicles via a selforganizing process . Finally two proteins were embedded into the vesicle and the potential of mean force (PMF) respect to the angle between them was obtained using umbrella sampling. This process was...

Abstract
Stirling engines operate in a variety of temperatures and the electric power production via dish Stirling systems could be considered as an appropriate alternative for high-temperature solar concentrator energy harvesting systems. To this end, by performing various studies and analyses on the engine, Stirling cycle, and heat exchangers while utilizing the solar energy as the input thermal energy of the Stirling engine, parameters with the highest effect on the output power and engine stability are detected and considered as optimization variables. In this case, output power, thermal efficiency, and economic evaluation are taken to be the three suitable objective functions for multi-objective...

Abstract
In this study, modeling of an irreversible thermoelectric heat pump was conducted, and its performance was assessed in terms of exergy for 10, 20, 30 and 40 K difference in temperature (∆T) by changing the values of the design parameters. By employing this model, positive impact of increasing cross-section area, current and thermocouple’s length which in turn increases the exergy efficiency is realized. In addition, diminishing adverse impact of adding more thermocouples on the exergy efficiency of the system is illustrated. Afterward, exergoeconomic performance of the thermoelectric heat pump is evaluated. Then, exergoeconomic factor for each of the system’s components is diagnosed. The...

Abstract
In the last three decades, the world has experienced enormous increases in energy consumption as a consequence of the economic and population growth. This causes renewable energy and energy recovery to become a requirement in building designs rather than option. A direct expansion (DX) air conditioning system is an efficient way to supply fresh and dehumidified air to a built environment a long side it plays a key role in preventing the spread of respiratory diseases. To improve the efficiency of a conventional DX system in hot and humid regions, fresh air dehumidification and conditioning systems with energy recovery measures are the key equipment to reach such a goal. To achieve this goal...
Colorimetric fingerprints of gold nanorods for discriminating catecholamine neurotransmitters in urine samples

Abstract
Catecholamine neurotransmitters, generally including dopamine (DA), epinephrine (EP) and norepinephrine (NE) are known as substantial indicators of various neurological diseases. Simultaneous detection of these compounds and their metabolites is highly recommended in early clinical diagnosis. To this aim, in the present contribution, a high performance colorimetric sensor array has been proposed for the detection and discrimination of catecholamines based on their reducing ability to deposit silver on the surface of gold nanorods (AuNRs). The amassed silver nanoshell led to a blue shift in the longitudinal localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) peak of AuNRs, creating a unique pattern...

Abstract
Catecholamine neurotransmitters, specifically, dopamine (DA), epinephrine (EP), and norepinephrine (NE), are known as substantial indicators of various neurological diseases. Developing rapid detection methods capable of simultaneously screening their concentrations is highly desired for early clinical diagnosis of such diseases. To this aim, we have designed an optical sensor array using three fluorescent dyes with distinct emission bands and have monitored variations in their emission profiles upon the addition of DA, EP, and NE in the presence of gold ions. Because of the different reducing power of catecholamines, differently sized gold nanoparticles (GNPs) with different levels of...

Abstract
Pattern-based sensing with multi-component sensor arrays, despite its merits, may be laborious and time-consuming. As an alternative approach, herein, a condition-based single component sensor array has been provided which represents an elegantly simple, low cost and minimally instrumented format for the quantification and classification of antidepressants (ADs). Tuning the pH and ionic strength enabled the single component probe to interact with the target analytes through different binding modes, providing the required cross-reactivity for multiplex detection. The analytical figures of merit verified that the condition-based sensor array is precise and accurate in both the discrimination...

Abstract
The present study investigated a counter-flow cooling tower performance by integrating the Artificial Neural Networks and Intelligent Optimisation Algorithms (ANN-IOAs). For this purpose, two scenarios were evaluated. In the first scenario, inlet air wet-bulb temperature (T aw), inlet air dry bulb temperature (T ad), water to the air mass flow rate ratio (mw /ma), and rotor speed (υ) were the input parameters for the ANNs, while the output temperature (T wo) was the ANNs output. In the second scenario, the same input parameters applied for the first scenario were used as input variables and the tower efficiency (ε) was considered as an output parameter. The well-known IOAs methods, namely,...

Abstract
Energy storage and supply in solar thermal collector systems rely heavily on phase change materials (PCM). It is vital to establish the appropriate values for energy discharge time (tPCM) and net amount of stored energy (Qnet) within the PCMs in order to increase the efficiency of solar thermal collectors. For this study, we implemented a multi-objective evolutionary algorithm based on decomposition (MOEA/D) for the optimization process using the MATLAB simulator software. The simulation findings show that, under ideal circumstances where tPCM is large and Qnet is low, these two goal functions are inversely connected to one another. According to an analysis of how input parameters affect the...

Abstract
Signal generation techniques for visual detection of analytes have received a great deal of attention in various sensing fields. These approaches are considered to be advantageous when instrumentation cannot be employed, such as for on-site assays, point-of-care tests, and he althcare diagnostics in resource-constrained areas. Amongst various visual detection approaches explored for non-invasive quantitative measurements, ratiometric fluorescence sensing has received particular attention as a potential method to overcome the limitations of intensity-based probes. This technique relies on changes in the intensity of two or more emission bands (induced by an analyte), resulting in an effective...
