    Abstract
In this paper, physical modeling tests are conducted to study some aspects of the dynamic compaction method. The loose models are prepared with dry sand. Four cylindrical tampers with different weight and cross section areas are used for compaction of the models and dropped from various heights. Strain gage type total stress measuring sensors are placed at different levels inside the model to measure the transferred vertical stresses due to collision of the tamper with the surface of the models. The typical stress time histories are presented. Improvement depth and crater depth and diameter created on the model surface are studied, among the various parameters affecting the phenomena. Using...

    Abstract
Surface waves generated during vibration of machine foundations are sometimes troublemaking and cause some damages to the nearby sensitive structures or people. Considering the function of the machines located on the foundations the dynamic loading could be harmonic or impact type. The main part of the generated energy is transferred to the ground by Rayleigh surface waves. One of the most reliable and economic methods for reduction of the effects of these generated waves is using open trenches around the dynamic sources, so called active isolation in literature. In this paper applicability and affecting parameters of the open trenches around the impact dynamic source is studied using...

Effect of direction of principal stress on cyclic behavior of dense sands

    , Article Geotechnical Special Publication ; 2014 , pp. 1317-1326 ; ISSN: 08950563 ; ISBN: 9780784413272 Jafarzadeh, F ; Zamanian, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2014
    Abstract
Soils have an anisotropic response, and changing the inclination and magnitude of the major principal stress will affect the collapse potential and brittleness and the shear strength and shear stiffness. A series of undrained cyclic tests on dense Babolsar and Toyoura sands with induced anisotropy were conducted using automatic hollow cylinder apparatus. Special attention was paid to the significant role of the principal stress direction (α). Results show that changes in α has significant effect on the type and the quantity of strains that directly affect the excess pore water pressure generation. Changes in α would change the deformation mode and soil stiffness. Stiffness reduction has led...

    Abstract
Soils have an anisotropic response, and changing the inclination (α) and magnitude of the major principal stress will affect collapse potential and brittleness, as well as shear strength and shear stiffness. In this paper, the effect of the stress path, with changes in intermediate principal stress, on the dynamic behavior of Babolsar sand, is studied. A series of undrained monotonic and cyclic tests on loose sand with induced anisotropy were conducted by using automatic hollow cylinder apparatus. Special attention was paid to the significant role of the intermediate principal stress parameter (b) in the deformation behavior of the sand during cyclic loading. Results show that at constant α,...

Experimental study on dynamic properties of sand with emphasis on the degree of saturation

    , Article Soil Dynamics and Earthquake Engineering ; Volume 32, Issue 1 , 2012 , Pages 26-41 ; 02677261 (ISSN) Jafarzadeh, F ; Sadeghi, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
Cyclic drained and undrained tests were performed in a modified simple shear device in order to specifically investigate the effect of saturation ratio on shear modulus and damping parameters of sand. In addition to the degree of saturation, the effects of number of cycles, vertical consolidation stress, shear strain amplitude and relative density on dynamic properties of sand were investigated. Dynamic stiffness and damping characteristic were found to be substantially independent of saturation ratio in the range of 25-75%. However, by approaching the full saturation state, the values of modulus fall sharply and damping of loose samples increases dramatically from corresponding values of...

, Article 14th Asian Regional Conference on Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering ; 2011 Jafarzadeh, F ; Golshan, Z ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
In order to evaluate dynamic properties of Babolsar and Toyoura sands at saturation levels of 25, 50, 75 & 100%, a series of cyclic simple shear tests were carried out. The SGI type cyclic simple shear device was used to study the shear modulus, G, and damping ratio, D, of the above mentioned sands at cyclic shear strain of 0.5, 5 & 10%. The effect of degree of saturation (S), vertical consolidation stress (σ vc) and number of loading cycles (N) were investigated. On the basis of the tests results, the shear modulus approximately remains constant by change of degree of saturation from 25 to 50% and decreases when reaches the degree of saturation 75%. Damping ratio approximately is constant...

Effect of stress anisotropy on the pore water pressure generation of loose sand

, Article 15th Asian Regional Conference on Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering, ARC 2015: New Innovations and Sustainability, 9 November 2015 through 13 November 2015 ; 2015 , Pages 401-406 Jafarzadeh, F ; Zamanian, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
It is well established that the main mechanism for the occurrence of liquefaction under seismic loading conditions is the generation of excess pore water pressure. The growth of the excess pore water pressure of saturated sand is dependent on several factors. Changing the inclination and magnitude of the major principal stress with respect to the depositional direction in most cases will increase the collapse potential and brittleness as well as reduce the shear strength and shear stiffness. An experimental program was carried out to study the variation of pore water pressure of cross-anisotropic deposits under anisotropic cyclic loading. A total of 30 undrained cyclic tests were performed...

Strength parameters of asphalt concrete used in core zone of earth dams

, Article Proceedings of the 17th International Conference on Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering: The Academia and Practice of Geotechnical Engineering ; Volume 2 , 2009 , Pages 1558-1561 ; 9781607500315 (ISBN) Jafarzadeh, F ; Yousefpour, N ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
Strength parameters of asphalt concrete used in earth fill dams' core were studied by conducting cyclic and monotonic triaxial tests on asphalt concrete samples. Results obtained from more than 120 cyclic tests showed that asphalt concrete behaves properly under cyclic loading and specimens stay intact after applying 5000 cycles. Results of monotonic and post-cyclic loading proved that strength parameters of asphalt concrete samples does not change significantly after being subjected to seismic loads. © 2009 IOS Press

Effect of stress direction on the cyclic resistance of sand

    , Article Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers: Geotechnical Engineering ; Volume 171, Issue 2 , April , 2018 , Pages 109-120 ; 13532618 (ISSN) Jafarzadeh, F ; Zamanian, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In total, 55 undrained cyclic torsional shear tests were conducted at a constant mean confining stress, σ0m, constant intermediate principal stress ratios, b = (σ2 − σ3)/(σ1 − σ3), and principal stress directions, α. The cyclic resistance of loose, isotropically consolidated specimens exhibited a dip in strength, with the lowest values for α being 45°, an angle at which α was oriented such that the potential shear band directions dovetailed with the plane having the weakest strength (i.e. horizontal plane). For a given α, the cyclic resistance decreased to the lowest values for b = 0·5, at which the value of the principal stresses was different in the three major directions. For dense...

Phase field approach to mode-I fracture by introducing an eigen strain tensor: general theory

    , Article Theoretical and Applied Fracture Mechanics ; Volume 108 , August , 2020 Jafarzadeh, H ; Mansoori, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B.V  2020
    Abstract
A thermodynamically consistent phase field theory for fracture is developed. An alternative approach to describe the reduction in the slope of the stress–strain curve and the reduction of the stresses to zero during damage is utilized by introducing transformation strain instead of the degradation function. The main requirements for the thermodynamic potential are presented and used to present the general energy terms. The analysis of the equilibrium solution is formulated which describes the desired stress–strain curves and for which the infinitesimal damage produces an infinitesimal change in the equilibrium elastic modulus. Analytical analysis of the equations is performed to calibrate...

    Abstract
Geotechnical design may be unsafe if the anisotropic behavior of soil is not considered. The behavior of anisotropic materials depends on the principal stresses and their directions. A detailed experimental programme was conducted to study the e ect of stress direction on the monotonic and cyclic behavior of dense sand. A total of 20 undrained tests were performed at a constant mean con ning stress (00m), a constant intermediate principal stress ratio (b = (2 - 3)=(1 -3)), and principal stress directions (). Two ne sands, Babolsar and Toyoura, were selected as the test materials. The isotropically consolidated specimens were prepared by the wet tamping technique. The results showed that the...

Effect of geometry and foundation conditions on the accuracy of the steady state seepage analysis results for rockfill dams

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 14, Issue 3 , 2007 , Pages 212-220 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Jafarzadeh, F ; Soleimanbeigi, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
One of the most important concerns in designing an embankment dam is seepage analysis. Conventional seepage analyses of embankment dams are performed in two-dimensional (2D) space, in which the impacts of water flow lines seeping from the side abutments are ignored. This fact is especially important if the dam is constructed in a narrow valley. In addition, if the effects of existing underlain faults in the reservoir water discharge rate, under different loading conditions, are to be scrutinized, three-dimensional (3D) modeling of the dam for seepage analysis is inevitable. In this paper, the significance of three-dimensional seepage analyses is emphasized by making a 3D model of a real dam...

    Abstract
A 2×2 pile group with one of its piles acting as an energy pile is modeled using a 1g test setup. The model piles are closed-end aluminum pipes with 2cm diameter and 60cm length. The energy pile goes under several heating and cooling cycles which in return induces unsymmetrical loading on the pile group. A single steel U-tube through which water with a desired temperature is to be circulated is placed inside the initially water-filled energy pile to control its temperature during thermal cycling. A plastic tilt of the pile cap is observed with each thermal cycle having a gradually decreasing rate as the number of cycles increased. Readings from the horizontally oriented total pressure cells...

Investigation of Dynamic Response of Shallow Foundations on Sandy Soil to Horizontal Harmonic Loading by Physical Model Tests

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ghassemi, Ramin (Author) ; Jafarzadeh, Fardin (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The most important step in current dynamic analysis of machine foundations is determining dynamic impedance functions. Impedance functions are defined as ratios of applied force or moment to induced displacement or rotation angle of foundation. In this research, horizontal dynamic response of foundation on homogeneous halfspace was investigated using physical modeling. Soil medium was built in a 1mx1mx0.8m steel box whose interior walls were covered by 0.1m of sawdust (a material with high damping). In order to prevent possible reflection of waves, this cover was extended to the box bottom with 0.2 m thickness. Sand raining method was used to build soil medium. In this method, with...
