, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Shayan Fakhr, Atefeh (Author) ; Ghorbanian, Kaveh (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The purpose of this research is the aerodynamic design of a 100 kW transonic ducted fan. Today, the aviation industry is moving towards the design of electric driven aircraft propulsion. Transonic ducted fans are one of the viable options that have been used in medium and heavy aircrafts due to their high specific power. In this research, the meanline model has been used for the initial design. By applying the design constraints, design limitations, design and functional parameters, the initial design point is found and then a sensitivity analysis is performed with respect to the effective design parameters to obtain the optimal design point. For the initial design of the transonic ducted...

Techno-Economic Comparison of Different Gas Turbine Inlet Cooling Techniques

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Shayan, Mahdi (Author) ; Hakkaki Fard, Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Inlet air cooling is a simple and economical method to increase the power output of gas turbines. High-pressure fogging systems and mechanical chillers are two common methods. High water consumption, damage to compressor blades by water droplets, and inefficiency in humid climates are disadvantages of high-pressure fogging systems. Mechanical chillers have high electricity consumption and initial costs. In this research, an earth-to-air heat exchanger (EAHE) is introduced as a new method for inlet air cooling of gas turbines and is technically and economically compared with the two common methods in the long term in the climate of Tehran city. Temperature distribution in the ground is...

RCTP: Regularized common tensor pattern for rapid serial visual presentation spellers

    , Article Biomedical Signal Processing and Control ; Volume 70 , September , 2021 ; 17468094 (ISSN) Jalilpour, S ; Hajipour Sardouie, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2021
    Abstract
Common Spatial Pattern (CSP) is a powerful feature extraction method in brain-computer interface (BCI) systems. However, the CSP method has some deficiencies that limit its beneficiary. First, this method is not useful when data is noisy, and it is necessary to have a large dataset because CSP is inclined to overfit. Second, the CSP method uses just the spatial information of the data, and it cannot incorporate the temporal and spectral information. In this paper, we propose a new CSP-based algorithm which is capable of employing the information in all dimensions of data. Also, by defining the regularization term for each mode of information, we can diminish the noise effects and overfitting...

Extended common spatial and temporal pattern (ECSTP): A semi-blind approach to extract features in ERP detection

    Abstract
Common spatial pattern (CSP) analysis and its extensions have been widely used as feature extraction approaches in the brain-computer interfaces (BCIs). However, most of the CSP-based approaches do not use any prior knowledge that might be available about the two conditions (classes) to be classified. Therefore, their applications are limited to datasets that contain enough variance information about the two conditions. For example, in some event-related potential (ERP) detection applications, such as P300 speller, the information is in the time domain but not in the variance of spatial components. To address this problem, first, we present a novel feature extraction method termed extended...

Higher-order semi-blind source separation approaches using canonical polyadic (cp) decomposition

    , Article 2023 31st International Conference on Electrical Engineering, ICEE 2023 ; 2023 , Pages 960-965 ; 979-835031256-0 (ISBN) Jalilpour Monesi, M ; Hajipour Sardouie, S ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Semi-blind source separation (SBSS) approaches are good alternatives to blind source separation (BSS) approaches in applications in which prior knowledge is available about the sources to be extracted. However, their usage has been limited to two-dimensional data sets so far. Therefore, in case of high-dimensional data sets, approaches such as canonical polyadic decomposition (CPD) have been mostly used as a BSS method. The aim of this work is to address this problem by proposing three novel high-dimensional semi-blind source separation methods in the CPD framework. To this end, our first proposed method termed semi-blind alternative least squares (SBALS) is an extension of alternative least...

A novel hybrid BCI speller based on RSVP and SSVEP paradigm

    , Article Computer Methods and Programs in Biomedicine ; Volume 187 , April , 2020 Jalilpour, S ; Hajipour Sardouie, S ; Mijani, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ireland Ltd  2020
    Abstract
Background and objective: Steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP) and rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP) are useful methods in the brain-computer interface (BCI) systems. Hybrid BCI systems that combine these two approaches can enhance the proficiency of the P300 spellers. Methods: In this study, a new hybrid RSVP/SSVEP BCI is proposed to increase the classification accuracy and information transfer rate (ITR) as compared with the other RSVP speller paradigms. In this paradigm, RSVP (eliciting a P300 response) and SSVEP stimulations are presented in such a way that the target group of characters is identified by RSVP stimuli, and the target character is recognized by SSVEP stimuli....

The effect of constant and variable stimulus duration on p300 detection

    , Article 27th Iranian Conference on Electrical Engineering, ICEE 2019, 30 April 2019 through 2 May 2019 ; 2019 , Pages 1807-1811 ; 9781728115085 (ISBN) Jalilpour, S ; Hajipour Sardouie, S ; Mijani, A. M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this paper, a new stimulation protocol is proposed to detect the P300 component. In this protocol visual oddball paradigm is used to evoke Event Related Potentials (ERPs). Two types of stimulation protocol for P300 detection (the proposed and standard protocols) are compared in terms of the R-square coefficient and the amplitude of the P300 component. Statistical analysis (paired t-test) is applied to determine the significant differences between the two protocols. The proposed method can enhance the ability to detect the P300 component in comparison to the common protocol that has been provided so far (standard protocol)

Extraction of Event Related Potentials (ERP) from EEG Signals using Semi-blind Approaches

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Jalilpour Monesi, Mohammad (Author) ; Hajipour Sardouie, Sepideh (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Nowadays, Electroencephalogram (EEG) is the most common method for brain activity measurement. Event Related Potentials (ERP) which are recorded through EEG, have many applications. Detecting ERP signals is an important task since their amplitudes are quite small compared to the background EEG. The usual way to address this problem is to repeat the process of EEG recording several times and use the average signal. Though averaging can be helpful, there is a need for more complicated filtering. Blind source separation methods are frequently used for ERP denoising. These methods don’t use prior information for extracting sources and their use is limited to 2D problems only. To address these...

Design and Implementation of a P300 Speller System by Using Auditory and Visual Paradigm

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Jalilpour, Shayan (Author) ; Hajipour Sardouie, Sepideh (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The use of brain signals in controlling devices and communication with the external environment has been very much considered recently. The Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) systems enable people to easily handle most of their daily physical activity using the brain signal, without any need for movement. One of the most common BCI systems is P300 speller. In this type of BCI systems, the user can spell words without the need for typing with hands. In these systems, the electrical potential of the user's brain signals is distorted by visual, auditory, or tactile stimuli from his/her normal state. An essential principle in these systems is to exploit appropriate feature extraction methods which...

Design and Optimization of Carbon Capture System from Exhaust Gases in the Process Industries

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Farshi Taghavi, Mahdis (Author) ; Rashtchian, Davood (Supervisor) ; Seif, Shayan (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
Carbon dioxide is one of the main geenhouse gases emitted from factories as well as transportation vehicles that adversely affect the atmosphere and cause global warming. Among the proposed solutions to reduce carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, carbon dioxide separation would be the most viable medium-term approach. However, the high cost of carbon dioxide separation prevents the development of carbon dioxide absorption technologies. Therefore, it seems that integrating separation and production processes is the most efficient way to save energy and reduce carbon emissions. This method decrease a high proportion of the energy consumption in upstream operations (carbon dioxide removal,...

    Abstract
P300 based Speller systems are a typical application of BCIs that can be used as a communication device for users with spinal cord injury. In this paper, three different RSVP paradigms; single, dual and triple RSVP are compared in terms of character detection accuracy and ITR to find the optimal communication method for these users. Three subjects were tested to compare these methods in offline mode. The results of this comparison shows that character detection accuracy for the single, dual and triple RSVP paradigms are 0.78, 0.63 and 0.64, respectively. The mean of ITR for the single, dual and triple RSVP paradigms was also recorded to be 3.6534, 7.72 and 11.5 bit/min, respectively....
