Abstract
A thermodynamically consistent phase field approach for fracture including surface stresses is presented. The surface stresses which are distributed inside a finite width layer at the crack surface are introduced as a result of employing some geometrical nonlinearities, i.e., by defining energy terms per unit volume at the current time and evaluating gradient of the order parameter in the current configuration. A double-well barrier term is included in the structure of the Helmholtz free energy which allows one to use the energy terms per unit volume at the current time when introducing the surface stresses in the current approach. Thus, the surface stresses are introduced in a similar way...

Abstract
A thermodynamically-consistent phase field approach for crack propagation which includes the following novel features is presented. (1) Scale dependency was included by relating the length scale to the number of cohesive interatomic planes at the crack tip. Because of this, the developed theory is applicable from the atomistic to the macroscopic scales. (2) The surface stresses (tension) are introduced by employing some geometrical nonlinearities even in small strain theory. They produce multiple contributions to the Ginzburg-Landau equation for crack propagation. (3) Crack propagation in the region with compressive closing stresses is eliminated by employing a stress-state-dependent kinetic...
Preparation and corrosion resistance of pulse electrodeposited Zn and Zn-SiC nanocomposite coatings
, Article Applied Surface Science ; Vol. 300 , May , 2014 , pp. 1-7 ; ISSN: 01694332 ; Mozafari, A ; Omidvar, H ; Javanbakht, M ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
Pure Zn and Zn matrix composite coatings containing nano-sized SiC particles with an average size of 50 nm were prepared from the zinc sulfate bath. The effects of the pulse frequency, maximum current density and duty cycle on the amount of particles embedded were examined. Electron microscopic studies revealed that the coating morphology was modified by the presence of SiC nanoparticles. In the presence of SiC nanoparticles deposit grows in outgrowth mode resulting in a very rough and porous microstructure. However, at very low and very high duty cycles a smooth and pore free microstructure was obtained. Corrosion resistance properties of the coatings were studied using potentiodynamic...

Abstract
The phase field approach (PFA) for the interaction of fracture and martensitic phase transformation (PT) is developed, which includes the change in surface energy during PT and the effect of unexplored scale parameters proportional to the ratio of the widths of the crack surface and the phase interface, both at the nanometer scale. The variation of these two parameters causes unexpected qualitative and quantitative effects: shift of PT away from the crack tip, "wetting" of the crack surface by martensite, change in the structure and geometry of the transformed region, crack trajectory, and process of interfacial damage evolution, as well as transformation toughening. The results suggest...

Abstract
Phase field theory for fracture is developed at large strains with an emphasis on a correct introduction of surface stresses at nanoscale. This is achieved by multiplying the cohesion and gradient energies by the local ratio of the crack surface areas in the deformed and undeformed configurations and with the gradient energy in terms of the gradient of the order parameter in the reference configuration. This results in an expression for the surface stresses which is consistent with the sharp surface approach. Namely, the structural part of the Cauchy surface stress represents an isotropic biaxial tension, with the magnitude of a force per unit length equal to the surface energy. The surface...

Abstract
The three-dimensional power law fluid flow through rough microchannels has been studied numerically to determine the effects of the topographic structures on the thermal and hydrodynamic characteristics of the system. Rectangular, triangular and sinusoidal element shapes have been considered in order to investigate the effects of roughness height, width, pitch and channel separation on the pressure drop and heat transfer. Uniform wall heat flux boundary condition has been applied for all the peripheral walls. The results indicate that the global heat transfer performance can be improved or reduced by the roughness elements at the expense of pressure head when compared with the smooth...

Abstract
The data mining activities done for making a data warehouse are too extensive and going through such a process is hardly possible in such cases. Therefore, there is a need for a new method which would be capable of prioritizing such activities according to organizational goals and missions. In this paper a new method based on the detection of necessary components of the data warehouse is offered for assessment and measurement of the data warehouse capacity and quality. Indeed the presented method serves as a complementary process alongside current methodologies to improve data warehouses. The presented method provides the possibility to assess and compare different data warehouses in terms...

Abstract
Accurate prediction of relative permeability for various reservoir rocks at various saturation conditions has been of concern for a long time in petroleum industry. Relative permeability is known as one of the most significant parameters in simulation of actual multi-phase flow through porous media during life-time of a hydrocarbon reservoir. In addition, it plays important role in oil production and well completion. Direct experimental measurement in order to determine relative permeability of porous rock has long been recorded in petroleum related literature. However, empirical methods for determining relative permeability are becoming more widely used, particularly with the advent of...

Abstract
Graphene oxide nanoribbons (GONRs) were synthesized using an oxidative unzipping of multi-walled carbon nanotubes. The interactions of the GONRs with various concentrations of fetal bovine serum or human plasma serum indicated that the GONRs were functionalized substantially by the albumin originated from the two different protein sources. Then, concentration-dependent cytotoxicity of the protein-functionalized GONRs on human epithelial cells was studied. Although the GONRs with concentrations ≤50 μg/mL did not exhibit significant cytotoxicity on the cells (with the cell viability >85%), the concentration of 100 μg/mL exhibited significant cytotoxicity including prevention of cell...

Thermodynamically Consistent Phase Field Modeling of Interaction Between Crack Propagation and Phase Transformation
, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology ; Farrahi, Gholam Hossein (Supervisor) ; Javanbakht, Mahdi (Co-Supervisor)
Abstract
According to the widespread application of shape memory alloys, their study in the presence of cracks has received lots of attention in the last two decades. The phase transformation ahead of the crack tip may change the stress field and the fracture behavior, especially at the nanoscale. Thus, modeling this phenomenon helps to recognize the affecting factors on crack propagation and prediction of material behavior when cracks exist. In the first step of this thesis, a phase field approach for crack propagation was presented, first by considering fracture as phase transformation and then as bond breaking. According to the scaling-up strategy, the developed theory is applicable from the...

Abstract
The aim of this work was to synthesize molecularly imprinted polymer-poly ethylene glycol-folic acid (MIP-PEG-FA) nanoparticles for use as a controlled release carrier for targeting delivery of paclitaxel (PTX) to cancer cells. MIP nanoparticles were synthesized by a mini-emulsion polymerization technique and then PEG-FA was conjugated to the surface of nanoparticles. Nanoparticles showed high drug loading and encapsulation efficiency, 15.6 ± 0.8 and 100%, respectively. The imprinting efficiency of MIPs was evaluated by binding experiments in human serum. Good selective binding and recognition were found in MIP nanoparticles. In vitro drug release studies showed that MIP-PEG-FA have a...

Abstract
In a MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) radar system, proper design of transmit signal and receive filter is an advantageous tool to improve the detection performance. Thus, in this paper, we consider the problem of transmit code and receive filter design, in order to maximize the Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) at the receiver while enforcing a similarity constraint between the transmit space-time code (STC) and a reference STC which has a desirable ambiguity function. We will show that by solving such constrained optimization problem through successive iterations, our proposed method leads to satisfactory results

Abstract
Weighting elements to achieve radiation patterns with desired characteristics is a classical work in phased array antennas. These characteristics can be low sidelobe level, narrow beamwidth, high directivity, pattern nulling in special angle and etc. For each of these characteristics, different methods have been introduced. Most of methods have been presented for uniform arrays, however there are lots of methods to obtain a desired pattern for antennas with non-uniform element distances. The problem with these methods is complexity or not very good results. In this paper, fast and easy methods based on Least Square Error that leads to good results are presented. In addition, weighting of...

Abstract
This paper resolve the salinity-dependent interactions of polar components of crude oil at calcite-brine interface in atomic resolution. Molecular dynamics simulations carried out on the present study showed that ordered water monolayers develop immediate to a calcite substrate in contact with a saline solution. Carboxylic compounds, herein represented by benzoic acid (BA), penetrate into those hydration layers and directly linking to the calcite surface. Through a mechanism termed screening effect, development of hydrogen bonding between –COOH functional groups of BA and carbonate groups is inhibited by formation of a positively-charged Na+ layer over CaCO3 surface. Contrary to the common...

Abstract
An important tool for assessing a radar's performance is the ambiguity function. On the other hand, many different schemes have been designed for the transmit waveforms of a MIMO radar. For each one, a criterion has been chosen to improve the performace, e.g. achieving better missed detection. In this paper, considering the ambiguity function as the benchmark, we propose a waveform design scheme, which optimizes the ambiguity function of the MIMO radar system

Abstract
Flow hydrodynamics of laminar falling film of aqueous Li Br solution (Li Br - H2O) on a horizontal elliptical tube has been investigated in this research. The film velocity distribution and film thickness, namely, the flow characteristics are determined by solving analytically simultaneous simplified Navier - Stokes equations and continuity equation in polar and Cartesian coordinates. The analysis is based on steady state laminar flow of falling liquid film of Li Br - H2O on a horizontal elliptical tube in polar model and Cartesian model (CM), for cases in which traction on the film surface is considered negligible. Models are compared with each other in three cases of aspect ratios (Ar),...
