The Study of Eliminating Gender Gap in Iran Labor Market on Participation Rate of Married Urban Women
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Rahmati, Mohammad Hossein (Supervisor) ; Joshaghani, Hossein (Supervisor)
Abstract
The low female labor force participation rate in the Iranian labor market relative to the global average and even to countries that do not differ significantly from the socio-economic characteristics of our country is one of the important questions of the Iranian labor market. In this study, we seek to answer the question of whether the economic participation rate of married women will increase if the gender gaps in wages, job findings and job losses among women and men are eliminated in the Iranian labor market. To answer this question using household expenditure and income data and labor force data, we show that between the two categories of occupations, in terms of the share of women's...
Puzzle of Jobless Growth and Growthless Employment: Evidences from Iranian Labor Market
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Nili, Masoud (Supervisor) ; Joshaghani, Hossein (Supervisor)
Abstract
From 1384 to 1395, the labor market in Iran has experienced a mysterious behavior in total number of employment, which we call it puzzle of jobless growth and growthless employment. By studying only the net changes in total number of employment, some important information neglected in explaining this phenomenon. To this end, it is common in labor economics to use dynamic labor market indicators such as job flows and labor flows. In this research, we first calculate labor flows from 1384 to 1395 and job flows from 1382 to 1392 by economic sector, firm size, job classification, occupational insurance coverage, gender and job type. Then the following question will be answered: Is the...

Gender Earnings Gap Among Tapsi Ride-share Drivers
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Madanizadeh, Ali (Supervisor) ; Joshaghani, Hossein (Co-Supervisor)
Abstract
Some have argued that two-way markets, such as the online rideshar-ing platforms, which divide their services into different segments and provides each of these segments to the independent workforce based on an articulate and transparent income criterion, are more attrac-tive to women, which in turn, can reduce income disparities. This is due to the flexibility in working hours as well as the transparency of the labor payment process. In this study, using micro-data related to the trips of male and female drivers of Tap30, we find out that there is a 2.2 % gender earning gap between drivers. Furthermore, the fac-tors affecting the possible income difference are identified. On the one hand,...

In this research, the effect of the opening of the metro station as a type of transportation corridor has been investigated on the value of residential properties around the station. Different parts of Tehran,...
Estimating Price Elasticity of Labor Supply in Ride-sharing Markets (Case Study: Tapsi)
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Madanizadeh, Ali (Supervisor) ; Joshaghani, Hossein (Supervisor)
Abstract
Because of flexibility in labor supply, ride-sharing market is a good platform for estimating drivers’ working hours in response to hourly earning changes. In this research using ride-sharing markets’ data and controlling for geographic effects and time and individual fixed effects, we have estimated 0.0129 for price elasticity of drivers’ working hours. Literature has focused on estimating the elasticity in time horizons shorter than a day (non-stop active hours), while in this paper we have also estimated the elasticity in daily horizon. We have also analyzed the heterogeneity of different types of drivers (Full-Time or Part-Time, Tehran or non-Tehran Plates, Gender and Experience) in...
Modeling Online Taxi Drivers’ Decision Making in Accepting or Rejecting Ride Offers
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Madanizadeh, Ali (Supervisor) ; Joshaghani, Hossein (Supervisor)
Abstract
Online ride-hailing platforms aim to match drivers and riders instantly by receiving ride requests from riders and sending them to drivers nearby. However, the low acceptance rate of offers by drivers leads to friction in the process of driver and rider matching. Various factors influence drivers' decisions to accept or reject offers. Specifically, drivers are more likely to turn down a ride offer when they know that by rejecting it, they can quickly receive another offer or find a passenger traditionally. To examine the factors influencing drivers' decisions in online ride-hailing markets, we focus on the behavior of drivers employed by Tapsi ride-hailing platform, and by specifying a...
Investigating the Effect of Freight Salons on Road Freight Prices
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Madanizadeh, Ali (Supervisor) ; Joshaghani, Hossein (Supervisor)
Abstract
In this research, the price effects of freight announcement salons in the road freight transportation market of Iran have been investigated. The road freight market in Iran has witnessed numerous protests by drivers in recent years. One of the main demands of this group was to establish freight salons in terminals lacking that. Contrary to the opinion of drivers, who believe that freight salons increase parity and remove intermediaries, freight companies believe that this policy reduces competition and quality and increases freight prices. In this study, using the information of waybills (“Baarnameh”) at transaction level, we show that the presence of freight announcement salons increases...
Measuring Economic Uncertainty in Iran
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Nili, Masoud (Supervisor) ; Joshaghani, Hossein (Supervisor)
Abstract
Uncertainty is one of the factors influencing the decision making of economic actors which has a long history in the literature of economics. Given that uncertainty is a mental concept, measuring it has always been a problem. In economic research, the instability caused by uncertainty is often used as an indicator of uncertainty. In this thesis, three indices for economic uncertainty in Iran are introduced: an indicator for macro-level uncertainty using fluctuations in macroeconomic variables, an indicator for micro-level uncertainty using micro-level variables and another indicator called the index of economic policy uncertainty index, Which was made by reviewing the newspapers and opinions...
The Effect of Price Shock Diffusion in Tehran Housing Market
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Talebian, Masoud (Supervisor) ; Joshaghani, Hossein (Supervisor)
Abstract
Due to the fluctuations of macro-economic factors, Tehran’s housing market has experienced several nominal price shocks. We aim to find a method to study the spatiotemporal dispersion of the shock, the center for this shock (if one exists), and the shock diffusion in Tehran’s housing market. There are similar studies in different geographical locations, but almost all of them have focused on shock dispersion across regions and states rather than within a city. While there are a bulk of the studies to construct a usable House Price Index in Iran and the effect of macro-economic factors on house prices, a similar study was yet to be done for a specific city or across wider regions in the...
Comparison of Slopes' Pgds Derived From Newmark Rigid Block Theory With 1g Shaking Table Model Tests
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Jafarzadeh, Fardin (Supervisor)
Abstract
Moderate to large magnitude earthquakes trigger hundreds to thousands of slope stability failures and landslides in coherent masses. In many earthquakes, landslides have been responsible for as much or more damage than all other seismic hazards combined. Earthquake-induced landslides have a detrimental impact on the serviceability of slopes by damaging nearby structures, roadways, utilities, power lines and communication networks. In this research large-scale shaking table model tests were conducted to study slope behavior under earthquake conditions on Sharif University shaking table. The model slopes were installed into a model box with a length of 3 m, width of 1 m, and height of 1.5 m. A...

A Data Mining Approach to Efficiently Improve Data Analysis in Energy Management Systems
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Bagheri Shouraki, Saeed (Supervisor)
Abstract
In Energy Management Systems, data analysis is done based on the information gathered from the electricity utility. The closer the information is to its real value, the better the data analysis in EMS becomes. Hence, improving the accuracy of the collected information leads to an improvement in data analysis in EMS. The information collected from the network consists of the measured values of voltage phasor at each bus, the generation or load power at each bus, and the power flow in branches. Since the total number of sensors are usually less than the total network’s parameters, it is not possible to precisely determine the values of Network’s parameters, and only an estimation of them can...

Abstract
Over the last few decades, polymer concrete (PC) has been finding use in quick repairing of concrete structures. However, there have been only few studies on the mechanical behavior of PC. The aim of this study is to evaluate the mechanical behavior of PC using destructive and non-destructive tests (NDT). The mixtures were prepared with three different polymer ratios (10%, 12%, and 14%) and two different coarse aggregate sizes (4.75–9.5 mm and 9.5–19 mm). The samples were subsequently tested under three different temperatures (−15 °C, +25 °C, and +65 °C). The Taguchi method and analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used to optimize PC mixes based on the compressive, splitting-tensile, and...
Verifying the Empirical Validity of the Trilemma using U.S. Monetary Shocks
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Barakchian, Mahdi (Supervisor) ; Joshaghani, Hosein (Co-Supervisor)
Abstract
According to the impossible trinity, countries can only enjoy from two of the following choices simultaneously: fixed exchange rate, free capital flow and independent monetary policy. A part of the economics literature has tried to verify the theory empirically. Some of the researches like Klein and Shambugh(2015) has concluded that the trilemma is valid on the occasion of transferring the effect of base countries interest rate changes to other countries. On the other side, a few papers like Ray(2013) has shown that an independent monetary policy can just be obtained by a closed capital flow and a float exchange rate system can not necessarily give central banks the autonomy of monetary...

Abstract
In this research, it has been tried to answer jobless growth in Iran’s economy between 2005 to 2011. At first, the added value and employment of various major sectors will be investigated. It will be observed that two major sectors, agriculture and industry, have been experienced jobless growth. After having been investigated more, it will be shown that the major part loss of the job in the agriculture is relating to unwaged family workers. In the industry about all the loss of the job has been happened in the textile sub-sector. In these two sectors, the most of the separated people has been inactive. Getting inactive and not being allocated of the separated people have been led to...
