, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Joshaghani, Mohammad (Author) ; Jafarzadeh, Fardin (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Moderate to large magnitude earthquakes trigger hundreds to thousands of slope stability failures and landslides in coherent masses. In many earthquakes, landslides have been responsible for as much or more damage than all other seismic hazards combined. Earthquake-induced landslides have a detrimental impact on the serviceability of slopes by damaging nearby structures, roadways, utilities, power lines and communication networks. In this research large-scale shaking table model tests were conducted to study slope behavior under earthquake conditions on Sharif University shaking table. The model slopes were installed into a model box with a length of 3 m, width of 1 m, and height of 1.5 m. A...

A Data Mining Approach to Efficiently Improve Data Analysis in Energy Management Systems

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Joshaghani, Mohammad (Author) ; Bagheri Shouraki, Saeed (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In Energy Management Systems, data analysis is done based on the information gathered from the electricity utility. The closer the information is to its real value, the better the data analysis in EMS becomes. Hence, improving the accuracy of the collected information leads to an improvement in data analysis in EMS. The information collected from the network consists of the measured values of voltage phasor at each bus, the generation or load power at each bus, and the power flow in branches. Since the total number of sensors are usually less than the total network’s parameters, it is not possible to precisely determine the values of Network’s parameters, and only an estimation of them can...

    Abstract
Supplier selection is an important and challenging problem in sustainable supply chain management. We propose a dynamic decision support system (DSS) for sustainable supplier selection in circular supply chains. Unlike the linear take-make-waste-dispose production systems, circular supply chains are nonlinear make-waste-recycle production systems with zero-waste vision. The proposed DSS allows users to customize and weight their economic, social, and circular criteria with a fuzzy best-worst method (BWM) and select the most suitable supplier with the fuzzy inference system (FIS). Machine learning is used to maintain and synthesize the criteria scores for the suppliers after each supplier...

Accept or reject a ride? this is the problem

    , Article Journal of Economic Studies ; Volume 50, Issue 7 , 2023 , Pages 1346-1374 ; 01443585 (ISSN) Fatemi Pour, E ; Madnanizdeh, A ; Joshaghani, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Emerald Publishing  2023
    Abstract
Purpose: Online ride-hailing platforms match drivers with passengers by receiving ride requests from passengers and forwarding them to the nearest driver. In this context, the low acceptance rate of offers by drivers leads to friction in the process of driver and passenger matching. What policies by the platform may increase the acceptance rate and by how much? What factors influence drivers' decisions to accept or reject offers and how much? Are drivers more likely to turn down a ride offer because they know that by rejecting it, they can quickly receive another offer, or do they reject offers due to the availability of outside options? This paper aims to answer such questions using a novel...

Verifying the Empirical Validity of the Trilemma using U.S. Monetary Shocks

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Karimi, Mahtab (Author) ; Barakchian, Mahdi (Supervisor) ; Joshaghani, Hosein (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
According to the impossible trinity, countries can only enjoy from two of the following choices simultaneously: fixed exchange rate, free capital flow and independent monetary policy. A part of the economics literature has tried to verify the theory empirically. Some of the researches like Klein and Shambugh(2015) has concluded that the trilemma is valid on the occasion of transferring the effect of base countries interest rate changes to other countries. On the other side, a few papers like Ray(2013) has shown that an independent monetary policy can just be obtained by a closed capital flow and a float exchange rate system can not necessarily give central banks the autonomy of monetary...

Gender Earnings Gap Among Tapsi Ride-share Drivers

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ziaee, Sina (Author) ; Madanizadeh, Ali (Supervisor) ; Joshaghani, Hossein (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
Some have argued that two-way markets, such as the online rideshar-ing platforms, which divide their services into different segments and provides each of these segments to the independent workforce based on an articulate and transparent income criterion, are more attrac-tive to women, which in turn, can reduce income disparities. This is due to the flexibility in working hours as well as the transparency of the labor payment process. In this study, using micro-data related to the trips of male and female drivers of Tap30, we find out that there is a 2.2 % gender earning gap between drivers. Furthermore, the fac-tors affecting the possible income difference are identified. On the one hand,...

Process Design of Ionic Liquid-Based CO2 Capture with Consideration of Economic and Environmental Issues

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Eidi, Ali (Author) ; Rashtchian, Davood (Supervisor) ; Adibi, Mina (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
Concerns have increased about global warming caused by CO2 emissions in the atmosphere. At the moment, carbon capture and storage is the best available solution. Among the current technologies for CCS, amine-based chemical absorption appears to be the most common method. Amines show several inherent drawbacks such as high vapor pressure, high energy consumption in regeneration, corrosivity and degradability. So, researchers have developed new solvents with the foresight of being superior to amines. Ionic liquids (ILs) are among the most suitable alternatives. The most prominent feature of ILs is their tunable thermophysical properties. In this work, physical absorption by ILs is chosen as...
