Gender ratio, divorce rate, and intra-household collective decision process: evidence from iranian urban households labor supply with non-participation
, Article Empirical Economics ; Volume 48, Issue 4 , 2015 , Pages 1365-1394 ; 03777332 (ISSN) ; Sharif University of Technology
2015
Abstract
This paper provides an empirical investigation on the individual labor supply of Iranian spouses in an intra-household collective decision framework in which gender ratio and divorce rate play a central role for resource allocation of household. The dataset is taken from the Households’ Expenditures Survey (2008) and the Annual Statistical Yearbook (2008) of Iran. I have conducted the parameters estimation and hypothesis testing using switching regression technique to catch the presence of the widespread non-participation of spouses across Iranian households. Reduced forms of labor supply are estimated considering the endogeneity of wage rates. The findings show that the unitary model of...

Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to estimate the wage difference between overeducated and adequately educated workers in a sample of semi-skilled and low-skill occupations in Iran’s labor market. The objective is to see if overeducated employees in these occupations enjoy higher wages in comparison to their adequately educated co-workers. Design/methodology/approach: The authors use the propensity score matching (PSM) model to estimate the wage difference between overeducated and adequately educated workers in a sample of semi-skilled and low-skill occupations in Iran’s labor market. The PSM method allows the authors to prevent selection bias by comparing each group of overeducated...

Abstract
Economists and policy-makers believe that the Fiscal Decentralization is an effective strategy to promote economic growth. Thereby Economic Growth is seen as an objective of Fiscal Decentralization and efficiency in the allocation of resources in the public sector. This study analyzed the relationship between fiscal decentralization and economic growth in Iran for the period 2001-2007.We used data for 28 provinces of the country estimated the model using a panel data regression with Fixed Effect. We find that fiscal decentralization has a positive effect on Iran's economic growth
Parents’ decision on child labour and school attendance: evidence from Iranian households
, Article Journal of Education and Work ; Volume 30, Issue 6 , 2017 , Pages 612-631 ; 13639080 (ISSN) ; Sharif University of Technology
2017
Abstract
In the framework of a household’s collective decision processes, this study presents a structural empirical model to test the hypothesis that child labour is compelled by household’s poverty and parent’s bargaining power against one another. To this end, a measure for mother’s intra-household bargaining power is developed. I use Iranian Household’s Income and Expenditures Surveys (2005 and 2010). Estimation method used in this study is multinomial logit. Findings indicate that household’s poverty is not the sole cause of child’s work incidence. Instead, given the other factors such as poverty, being the first born, local labour market prospect and gender fixed, mother’s bargaining power is...
Trunk muscle fatigue and its implications in EMG-assisted biomechanical modeling
, Article International Journal of Industrial Ergonomics ; Volume 43, Issue 5 , 2013 , Pages 425-429 ; 01698141 (ISSN) ; Mirka, G.A ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
Muscle fatigue affects the underlying EMG-force relationship on which EMG-assisted biomechanical models rely. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of short duration muscle fatigue on the muscle gain value. Participants performed controlled, isometric trunk extension exertions at 10, 20, and 30 degrees of trunk flexion and controlled isokinetic trunk extension exertions at 5 and 15°/sec on five separate days. Fatigue of the lumbar extensors was generated by moderate-intensity, trunk extension exertions. Participants performed controlled test contractions at defined intervals throughout the fatiguing bout and the EMG activities of trunk muscles were collected. These EMG data were...

Abstract
Cupric oxide (CuO) nanostructures are grown on fluorine doped tin oxide (FTO) coated glass substrate using aqueous solution approach. The concentration of precursor's solution has significant impact on morphology of CuO nanostructure. By varying concentration of precursor, the growth of two different morphologies (oriented nanosheets and nanoleaves) is achieved. X-ray diffraction pattern and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy reveals formation of pure CuO crystalline phase. Mott-Schottky characteristic confirms the p-type semiconducting nature. Ultrathin structures of nanoleaves lead to higher light trapping and light absorption in visible-NIR region. The nanoleaves film has lower bandgap in...
Performance evaluation of the Bayesian and classical value at risk models with circuit breakers set up

Abstract
Circuit breakers, like price limits and trading suspensions, are used to reduce price volatility in security markets. When returns hit price limits or missed, observed returns deviate from equilibrium returns. This creates a challenge for predicting stock returns and modelling value at risk (VaR). In Tehran Stock Exchange (TSE), the circuit breakers are applied to control for the excess price volatilities. This paper intend to address which models and what methodology should be applied by risk analysts to calculate the VaR when the returns are unobservable. To this end, we extend Wei’s (2002) model, in the framework of Bayesian Censored and Missing-GARCH approach, to estimate VaR for a share...

Abstract
The recent researches show that value-at-risk (VaR) estimations are biased and is calculated conservatively. Bao and Ullah (2004) proved the bias of an ARCH(1) model for VaR can be decomposed in to two parts: bias due to the returns' misspecification distributional assumption for GARCH(1,1), i.e., (Bias1) and bias due to estimation error, i.e., (Bias2). Using quasi maximum likelihood estimation method this paper intends to find an analytical framework for the two sources of bias. We generate returns from Normal and t-student distributions, then estimate the GARCH(1,1) under Normal and t-student assumptions. Our findings reveal that Bias1 equals to zero for the Normal likelihood function, but...
The profitability of pair trading strategy in stock markets: Evidence from Toronto stock exchange

Abstract
Market practitioners and speculators attempt to make benefits from the existence of market price gaps and profit opportunities by arbitrage strategies. Although some investors trade stocks based on the available financial and fundamental information of a particular share, there are others who make profits by risk hedging and swing trading opportunities. One of these strategies is pairs trading, which is a sub-category of statistical arbitrage. Pairs trading can assure reasonably a risk-free profit gaining. This paper aims to make a hypothetical portfolio composed of pairs of stocks by exploring a significant association between their prices in the Toronto Stock Exchange, TSX. We compare the...

Parents Bargaining Power and Child’s Time Allocation in Iranian Households
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Keshavarz Haddad, Gholamreza (Supervisor)
Abstract
This research intends to analysis the determinants of child work and schooling in Iran. To do this we use the Household’s Income and Expenditure survey of Iran in 2009. There are two competing theoretical base of household’s time allocation, the unitary and collective bargaining decision approaches. We use the later to consider the differences in preferences of parents toward the child’s time allocation. Making use of Bivariate Probit and Tobit, we examined the effects of parents’ bargaining power and child’s birth order on his/her schooling and work decision. Our finding, confirm that, mother’s bargaining power has negative association with the work participation of her son and daughter but...
The socioeconomic and demographic determinants of crime in Iran (a regional panel study)
, Article European Journal of Law and Economics ; Volume 32, Issue 1 , 2011 , Pages 99-114 ; 09291261 (ISSN) ; Markazi Moghadam, H ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
The raising trend both in violent and property crime are of major concern in Iran. Using a panel data modeling (province wide), the paper provides an econometrics assessment of the relationship between crime against properties and violent crimes as functions of deterrent, social, economic and demographic factors in Iran, in the framework of Becker-Ehrlich crime supply theory. The findings indicate that, although deterrence hypothesis is not confirmed for burglary and assault, it explains the variations of murders and threats. Economic factors play key role in burglary and threat explanation, but they do not affect willful murders, however, Literacy explains both murders and threats. Average...
Analysis of adverse selection and moral hazard in the health insurance market of Iran
, Article Geneva Papers on Risk and Insurance: Issues and Practice ; Volume 35, Issue 4 , October , 2010 , Pages 581-599 ; 10185895 (ISSN) ; Zomorrodi Anbaji, M ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
This paper aims to estimate a demand model for health insurance and medical care in Iran, in the presence of heterogeneous and latent health status of individuals; moreover it tests the asymmetry of information in the health insurance market. Our data set have been taken from the Households expenditures survey (2006) of Iran. Parameters of the model are estimated by the Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) and the presence of asymmetric information (adverse selection and moral hazard) is tested by a non-parametric econometric method. The analytical model is specified under minimal assumptions on the selection process of different insurance categories and the statistical distribution of...
Work Sharing as a Solution to Over Employment Unemployment Paradox
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Keshavar Haddad, Gholamreza (Supervisor)
Abstract
Over employment is a common phenomenon in Iran. Over 61% of the labor force with more than 31 years of work experience have worked more than 42 hours a week in year 2000. This amount, increases for the years 2001, 2003 & 2004 as 65.9%, 68.5% & 72.1%. In this research, we examined the possibility of job opportunity reallocation by increasing the overtime premium between over employed and unemployed labor force in Iranian labor market. For this goal, we estimated the determinants of overtime incidence and hours according to single selection & double selection approach, Tunali (1986). Pooled data from urban Iranian labor force- year 2005- was collected and analyzed. Our results clearly show...
Analysis of Effective Factors of Second Job Selection in Iranian Labor Market
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Keshavarz Haddad, Ghloalmreza (Supervisor)
Abstract
Working in second job is one the fact in labor market. based on the data of Statistical center of Iran. In Iran approximately 18 % of worker have second job. This trend fluctuate around 20%. That increase from 18% in 1372 into 19% in 1382. This research examines effective factor on secondary job market panel data from statistical surveys conducted by Statistics Centre of Iran from 1380 to 1382 .We apply three step Multiple selection method. Because of existence of censoring data & sample selection problem We use of probit method for panel data for modeling of existence in labor market and second job. Then we use of Tunali (1985) Method for estimate hours in second job. Result of research...
Trade Liberalization and Wage Inequality in Iran’s Industries
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Keshavarz Haddad, GholamReza (Supervisor)
Abstract
This study examins effects of trade liberalization on the wage inequality across industries and between genders within these industries by utilizing the data of micro-level Households’ Income and Expenditures surveys and trade statistics over 2001-2011. The analysis is carried based on the Heckscher–Ohlin’s theory in international trade and Baker’s taste discrimination theory at firms. We use Quantile regression and ordinary least squares (OLS) to consider the wage discrimination across entire distribution wage distribution and at wages mean as well. The results of Blinder-Oaxaca decomposition approach (inequality at mean wage) and Machado and Mata’s model (inequality of wage at entire...
Relationship between Fertility and Female Labor Participation in Iran
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Keshavarz Haddad, Gholamreza (Supervisor)
Abstract
Despite the fact that total fertility rate has a drastic decrease from 6.6 in 1980 to 1.8 childeren in 2008 and their education was highly growing in the last two decades, their participation in labor market is stillrelatively low(with maximum rate of 17.5 in 2007). Making use of the Iranian Household Expenditure and Income Survey(HEIS) and yearly labor market surveys (1984-2009), we intend to investigate the interaction between fertility(FER) and female labor participation(FLP) in Iran, for both the population with ages of 10-64 and 18-30. We use simultaneousequations by GMM to estimate the system of equation. Our findings show that the sign of FER’s determinants are as expected, but FLP...
Estimating the Optimal Commodity Futures Hedge Ratio:A Comparative Approach for the Gold Coin Market in Iran
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Keshavarz Haddad, Gholamreza (Supervisor)
Abstract
The increasing trend of gold prices over the last years, also a remarkable inflation in the prices level of Iran, attracted Iran households’ financial resources to the market of this precious metal. Although there are a sensible risk in the value of this asset, gold coin futures contracts is considered as an effective risk management lever of financial investors. This research intends to estimate the optimal rate of futures over spot contracts in the gold coins market of Iran. To this end, we use spot and futures prices over the 2008 Dec through 2011 Dec, which all the time series are sourced from the Iran’s mercantile exchange website. Among the existing procedures of optimal hedge ratio...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Keshavarz Haddad, GholamReza (Supervisor)
Abstract
Since past time, market practitioners and speculators have attempted to use the existent market gaps and opportunities like arbitrage. While some investors buy stocks based on the available financial information of particular companies, others, by using different strategies, try to make profit out of it, based on true realization of the market and its behavior. This strategies will create the profitability by providing different situations including risk hedging and swing trading opportunities .In this context, researchers have designed various strategies for recognizing the assets that have high return potential. One of these strategies in trading with financial tools, is pair trading...
The Role of Children in the Decisions of Urban Households in Iran
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Keshavarz Haddad, Gholamreza (Supervisor)
Abstract
Family economics consider children either as "goods" in consumption vector of their parents or as agents that have the ability of full economic independency. While the children reach adolescent age, the theory models their role, not only as individuals with their own preferences, but also as agents who can have an impact on family outcomes. Aim of this study is to focus on the fact that if children of certain ages take part in the households’ decisions or not. We use data from Households Income and Expenditures Survey 2011 for urban area and families with three members, parents and child with the age range 15 - 30. For a closer look, households were divided into four groups which include...
