Investigating Layout of Shear Walls in Tall Buildings with Non-Symmetrical Plan
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Khaloo, Alireza (Supervisor)
Abstract
In tall buildings, seismic behavior depends on structural elements and their configuration. The usefulness of shear walls in the structural planning of multistory buildings has long been recognized. When walls are situated in advantageous positions in a building, they can be very efficient in resisting lateral loads originating from wind or earthquakes. Restriction in surrounding effects and the architectural design may contribute to have asymmetry in plan. In a number of papers, published mainly in the last decade, the analysis and design of shear walls has been studied. But just a few of them considered arrangement of shear walls to find the optimum layout. In the present study, analysis...
Bioadhesive Fabrication for Corneal Injuries
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Abdekhodaie, Mohammad Jafar (Supervisor)
Abstract
Corneal perforations are one of the most widespread illnesses which are associated with severe pains and vision loss. Eyes with corneal perforations must be treated immediately in order to preserve its morphology and prohibit secondary complications. Opthalmologist usually apply cyanoacrylate and fibrin glues for filling and sealing incisions, but they have several drawbacks besides their advantages. Cyanoacrylates which are unabsorbable remains as a foreign body in the patient’s eyes and will cause annoyment. Fibrin glues that are attained from ibrinogen and thrombin, can transfer blood diseases. Therefore, fabricating a bioadhesive with high biocompatibility, adhesion and...

, Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 16, Issue 3 , 2009 , Pages 199-215 ; 10263098 (ISSN) ; Zaman Kabir, M ; Bakhshi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
2009
Abstract
The seismic behaviour of a 4-story building is investigated under horizontal excitation of simulated earthquakes. The model has been constructed with a 3D sandwich panel system without any conventional frame system in four storeys on a shaking table. The building has been modelled before construction. Due to the table limit, the scale factor of the model is chosen as 1: 2.35 of a prototype. The shaking table test of the scaled model of the building is carried out under several ground motions to verify the safety of the system. The simulated motions were applied to the model in two-perpendicular directions, simultaneously. The failure mechanism and dynamic behaviour of the model, as a...
Implementing an accurate generalized gaussian quadrature solution to find the elastic field in a homogeneous anisotropic media
, Article Journal of the Serbian Society for Computational Mechanics ; Volume 11, Issue 1 , 2017 , Pages 11-19 ; 18206530 (ISSN) ; Matikolaei, S. A. H. H ; Sharif University of Technology
2017
Abstract
In the current study, the elastic field in an anisotropic elastic media is determined by implementing a general semi-analytical method. In this specific methodology, the displacement field is computed as a sum of finite functions with unknown coefficients. These aforementioned functions exactly satisfy both the homogeneous and inhomogeneous boundary conditions in the proposed media. It is worth mentioning that the unknown coefficients are determined by implementing the principle of minimum potential energy. The numerical integration is done by employing the Generalized Gaussian Quadrature rule. Furthermore, and with the aid of the calculated unknown coefficients, the displacement fields as...

Abstract
Acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), also called COVID-19, is one of the most contagious viruses resulting in a progressive pandemic. Since specific antiviral treatments have not been developed yet and its fatal rate is almost high, early and fast detection is critical for controlling the outbreak. In this study, a piezoelectric microcantilever biosensor has been designed for detecting COVID-19 samples directly without requiring preparation steps. The biosensor acts as a transducer and is coated with the related antibody. When the SARS-CoV-2 antigens adsorbed on the microcantilever top surface through their spike proteins, a surface stress due to the mass change would be...
Comparing EC and GO Model in Protein Folding Simulation
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Ejtehadi, Mohammad Reza (Supervisor)
Abstract
Proteins are one of the most important bio-molecules. they play an important role in every aspect of living organisms. The information for synthesizing these important molecules is coded in the DNA of that organism. After the coded data is read and transcribed by some other bio-molecules that are proteins themselves, the protein is made and starts it's biological function in different organs. For this reason, investigating properties of proteins helps us to better understand how life works. Understanding the dynamics of proteins, which are some polymers with special energy landscape properties, has attracted the attention of physicists in the 20th century. Proteins are chains of amino...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Roshandel, Ramin (Supervisor)
Abstract
Agriculture is one the most water consuming sections in the world and roughly 60% of water demand is dedicated for this purpose. A seawater greenhouse manages to combine fan and pad greenhouse with humidification-dehumidification desalination in order to achieve water production next to agriculture products using moister in air which was used for cooling. The most important aspect of a seawater greenhouse is the amount of produced water. Many research on the condenser type and materials have been conducted in order to achieve a better performance, suggesting the utilization of a low temperature water source for the condenser. In this research, using a thermodynamic correlations to model the...

Abstract
We study the behavior of epidemic routing in a delay tolerant network as a function of node density. Focusing on the probability of successful delivery to a destination within a deadline (PS), we show that PS experiences a phase transition as node density increases. Specifically, we prove that PS exhibits a phase transition when nodes are placed according to a Poisson process and allowed to move according to independent and identical processes with limited speed. We then propose four fluid approximations to evaluate the performance of epidemic routing in non-sparse networks. An ordinary differential equation (ODE) is proposed for supercritical networks based on approximation of the infection...

Abstract
Lithium batteries have been widely used to power up implantable medical devices such as pacemakers that are often designed to treat, diagnose, and prevent different diseases. However, due to their limited capacity and lifetime, patients have to undergo a surgical procedure to replace the discharged battery. Recently, nanogenerators have been emerged and are broadly accepted since they can convert tiny biomechanical forces, such as heartbeats, into electrical energy. This study aims to manufacture a biocompatible and high-performance piezoelectric energy harvester (PEH) that is capable to be charged by the energy received from the heartbeat and store the generated voltage. In this research, a...

Abstract
Background Across low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs), one in ten deaths in children younger than 5 years is attributable to diarrhoea. The substantial between-country variation in both diarrhoea incidence and mortality is attributable to interventions that protect children, prevent infection, and treat disease. Identifying subnational regions with the highest burden and mapping associated risk factors can aid in reducing preventable childhood diarrhoea. Methods We used Bayesian model-based geostatistics and a geolocated dataset comprising 15 072 746 children younger than 5 years from 466 surveys in 94 LMICs, in combination with findings of the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries,...
