    Abstract
Distribution system operator (DSO) has traditionally been responsible for the reliable operation of power distribution systems. The advent of distributed energy resources (DERs) and microgrids in distribution networks has required a new platform for DSOs. The new DSO, which is for the most part an independent agent, is responsible for aggregating a widely dispersed DERs (which include small thermal generation units, energy storage, and demand response) and flexible loads in electricity markets. DSO coordinates and balances the transactive dispatch of supply and demand at the distribution level and links wholesale and retail electricity markets. In this paper, a framework for the day-ahead...

Day-ahead self-scheduling of a transmission-constrained GenCo with variable generation units using the incomplete market information

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Sustainable Energy ; Volume 8, Issue 3 , 2017 , Pages 1260-1268 ; 19493029 (ISSN) Kabiri Renani, Y ; Ehsan, M ; Shahidehpour, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2017
    Abstract
In this paper, a self-generation scheduling method for a power generation company (GenCo) with renewable generation units is presented. In the proposed method, locational market prices (LMPs) are calculated using the incomplete information on competing market participants by simulating the ISO's market clearing program and considering the effect of physical limitations of transmission lines. The errors associated with forecasted LMP and renewable production are modeled in the GenCo's generation scheduling using a robust optimization approach. The scheduling problem is modeled as a mixed-integer linear programming which is solved by a CPLEX solver in GAMS. An eight-bus system is employed to...

    Abstract
In this paper, a robust distribution system expansion planning (DSP) approach is presented to supply the load growth locally and move toward nearly zero energy local distribution areas (LDAs). In the proposed approach, a distribution system operator (DSO) is responsible for secure and optimum operation of LDAs. Therefore, investors on distribution system upgrades use this approach to maximize the profit on investments by determining the installation year of new distribution feeders and energy resources, distributed energy resource (DER) placements and sizes considered by corresponding DSOs. The accurate AC power flow solution is used and mathematical methods are developed to model the DSP as...

    Abstract
The main motivation of this study is to address the challenges due to high penetration of renewable distributed energy resources (DERs) and efficiently benefit from DERs in distribution system planning (DSP). This paper considers a decentralized enhanced platform for DSP which is coordinated with bulk power system planning (PSP) to keep the optimality and security of the whole power system. In the proposed coordinated approach, distribution system operators (DSOs) plan and operate DERs to upgrade their local distribution areas (LDAs), supply forecasting local load growth, and avoid or defer costly generation and transmission expansion planning at the bulk power system. The proposed DSP model...

Short Term Scheduling of Gencos eith Renewable Units for Participation in Electricity Market

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Kabiri Renani, Yahya (Author) ; Ehsan, Mehdi (Supervisor) ; Shahidehpour, Mohammad (Co-Advisor) ; Mohammadi Ivatloo, Behnam (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
Restructuring in the electrical industry, is one of the most important change in this industry which cause profit based decision making in all parts of the electrical network, especially in the generation part. In a real incomplete market environment, uncertainties associated with input parameters of the GenCos’ self-scheduling problem such as market price and accessible renewable generation would be one of the most important factors that affects the profits of GenCos and energy resources. Nowadays, increased use of distributed energy resources (DERs) such as distributed generations (DGs), energy storage units, and demand response, has led to a paradigm shift within the electric power...

A New Method for Measuring very Low Variation in Physical Parameters based on the Sensitivity to Conditions of Chaotic Systems

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Seddighi Renani, Jamal (Author) ; Zohoor, Hasan (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Since the beginning of human civilization, improving the methods of measuring and identifying changes in order to improve the level of comfort and safety of human civilization is inevitable. The intrinsic property of high sensitivity to system conditions in chaos phenomena has led some researchers to use this feature for purposes of identifying and measuring changes. The most important bugs of previous researches in this area are the complexity, lack of coherence and dependence on the nominal parameters. By analyzing the effect of the type and magnitude of the initial deviation in a system parameter on all the characteristics of the Duffing system response in the chaotic regime, was observed...

Trade in Intermediate Goods and The Welfare Gain from International Trade

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ahmadi Renani, Saber (Author) ; Madanizadeh, Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this thesis, I introduce a general equilibrium model of international trade that takes into account the industry linkages between intermediate goods and consumption goods producers to quantitatively measure the countries’ welfare gains and losses from different trade policies on intermediate and consumption goods. My model extends the inter-industry trade model of Ricardo (1817), intra-industry model of Krugman (1980), and firm heterogeneous model of Melitz (2003). Reduction of tariffs affect welfare of countries through direct effects on income, cost of export, and cost of input bundles of production (labor and intermediate goods), and indirectly through changes in term of trades, and...

    , Article Iranian Polymer Journal (English Edition) ; Volume 24, Issue 5 , May , 2015 , Pages 379-388 ; 10261265 (ISSN) Kheirabadi, M ; Bagheri, R ; Kabiri, K ; Sharif University of Technology
    Springer-Verlag London Ltd  2015
    Abstract
Despite various applications of hydrogels, they have poor gel strength and low resistance against crack propagation which lead to the limitation of their applications. For overcoming this inherent weakness, the current study has focused on the simultaneous utilization of interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) structure and nanocomposite hydrogels. It is known that IPN and nanocomposite gels can improve gel strength. The combination of IPN and nanocomposite structure was developed in hydrogels for improving gel strength. For this purpose, bentonite was successfully modified with a cationic surfactant, (3-methacrylamidopropyl) trimethyl ammonium chloride (MAPTAC), as intercalate, and...

    Abstract
Despite the various uses of hydrogels, one of their weaknesses is the poor gel strength. To overcome this restriction, the current study has focused on simultaneously employing an interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) structure and nanocomposite hydrogels. Through this approach, the influence of nanofiller in the single network and IPN hydrogel properties was also studied in detail. For this purpose, a novel full interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) hydrogel nanocomposite based on 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid (AMPS)/acrylic acid (AA)–sodium acrylate (AANa) was synthesized in two steps through a facile solution polymerization with incorporation of modified bentonite (MBE) as...

    Abstract
A new method for the robust estimation of target orientation using measured radar cross section is proposed. The method is based on a Generalized Regression Neural Network (GRNN) scheme. The network is trained by the FFT modulus of bistatic radar cross section data sampled at the receiver positions. The target value to be trained is the angle between a defined target orientation and the incident wave. Results based on actual measurements are presented

    Abstract
In this paper we consider a cooperative communication systems over Rayleigh fading channels. The system utilizes a combination of incremental and selective decode-and-forward (ISDF) relaying protocols. The symbol error rate (SER) of M-PSK modulation for the ISDF protocol is derived. Using an approximation of the SER expression, the optimal power allocation is investigated. In order to reduce the complexity of the receiver, we used a modified version of the ISDF protocol which does not use the storage or retransmission of the first phase signal. We also derived optimal power allocation coefficient for modified ISDF. It has been noted that for the optimal power allocation in the ISDF protocol,...

    Abstract
In this paper we consider a relaying communication system over Rician fading channels. In this system we assume simple Incremental-Selective Decode-and-Forward (ISDF) protocol, which is jointly combining incremental and selective DF relaying protocols. In this protocol, storage or retransmission of the first phase signal are not allowed. We analyze the symbol error rate (SER) performance of the recommended protocol with M-PSK modulation. We evaluate the performance of the protocol in the frequency nonselective slow Rician fading channels. Using the approximation of the SER expression, the optimal power allocation is investigated. Our results show that at least 50% of total power must be used...

Effects of anti-vortex plates on air entrainment by free vortex

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 20, Issue 2 , 2013 , Pages 251-258 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Kabiri Samani, A. R ; Borghei, S. M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
Free surface vortex and air entrainment are not favorable experiences in hydropower and pumping projects. While complete omission of vortex and air entrainment is not always cost effective, partially weakened free-surface vortex flow is more economical and practical. Hence, in this study, a comprehensive set of experiments were conducted to partially reduce vortex strength and air entrainment at vertical pipe intakes, using rectangular anti-vortex plates. This phenomenon results in increasing water discharge compared with a corresponding free-surface vortex for the same water depth, i.e. in cases of shaft spillway. The plates were used as singles and in pairs and placed symmetrically and...

Pressure loss in a horizontal two-phase slug flow

    Abstract
The study of air-water, two-phase flows in hydraulic structures such as pressurized flow tunnels, culverts, sewer pipes, junctions, and similar conduits is of great importance for design purposes. Air can be provided by vortices at water intakes, pumping stations, aerators, steep channels, etc. Under certain conditions, air may also be introduced into pressurized intake systems, which may form large bubbles in portions of the pipe. The bubbles may, in turn, cause an unstable slug flow, or other flow patterns, that leads to sever periodic transient pressure. In this paper, an experimental model (a circular and transparent pipeline, 90 mm in ID and 10 m in length) is used to predict pressure...
