Abstract
Enforcing dynamic and confidential access control policies is a challenging issue of data outsourcing to external servers due to the lack of trust towards the servers. In this paper, we propose a scalable yet flexible access control enforcement mechanism when the underlying relational data, on which access policies are defined, has been shared through a secret sharing scheme. For sharing values of an attribute in a relation, the attribute is assigned a secret distribution key and its values are split and distributed among data servers according to a Shamir based secret sharing scheme. Given access control policies over attributes of the relation schema, access to distribution keys, used...

Abstract
The development of asymmetric supercapacitors requires the design of electrode construction and the utilization of new electroactive materials. In this regard, an effective strategy is the loading of active materials on an integrated 3D porous graphene-based substrate such as graphene foam (GF). Herein, we successfully designed and fabricated a novel ternary binder-free nanocomposite consisting of polypyrrole, Fe-Co sulfide, and reduced graphene oxide on a nickel foam electrode (PPy/FeCoS-rGO/NF) via a facile, cost-effective, and powerful electrodeposition method for application in high-performance asymmetric supercapacitors. The monolithic 3D porous graphene foam (GF) obtained by the facile...
Optimal Design of Partial State-Feedback Controllers
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Karimi, Houshang (Supervisor) ; Karimi, Masoud (Supervisor)
Abstract
Design of optimal controllers for nonlinear systems and even for linear systems is one of the most important parts of the control science. In optimal controller design, our aim is to maximize or minimize some kind of cost function associated with that particular problem. Such cost functions are usually combining the overall control effort, system’s energy, or some other important specifications of the system. Explicit solution for linear quadratic controllers exists under some mild conditions such as stabilizability of the system. The solution is in the form of a full state-feedback law. But in practical problems, we may not have access to all of the system state variables. The problem can...
An Investigation into the Hot Tensile Properties of a Heat Resistant Steel
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Karimi Taheri, Ali (Supervisor)
Abstract
The microstructures of stainless steels consist of an austenitic matrix with almost continuous network of primery carbides. This class of steel had replaced the traditional super alloys with a reduction in costs and has similar properties under conditions of creep, which is one of the principal degradation mechanisms leading to failure in service at elevated temperaturs , therefore, their mechanical properties such as tensile strength and creep resistance are particularly important in hot deformation. Recently the effects of temperature and aging time on static strain aging in worked stainless steel have been investigated. In this study the deformation behavior of HP-series austenitic...

Abstract
This article presents an overview of the mechanical design and fabrication of a Rescue Robot (CEDRA) for operation in unstructured environments. In order to obtain an appropriate mechanism for climbing the stairs, a novel method has been developed. In this kinematics-based approach we don't need to perform any dynamic analysis which is highly complicated and time consuming for most rovers. According to the essential characteristics needed for rovers, two objective functions were defined. We have shown that the new mechanism performs better on rough terrains than the previous well-known mechanism widely used in the Mars rovers. Moreover the design parameters are optimized by means of Genetic...

Abstract
This article presents an overview of the mechanical design features, fabrication and control of a Rescue Robot (CEDRA) for operation in unstructured environments. As a preliminary step, the essential characteristics of a robot in damaged and unstable situations have been established. According to these features and kinematical equations of the robot, design parameters are optimized by means of Genetic Algorithm. Optimum parameters are then utilized in construction. Upon fabrication, this unit has been tested in clean laboratory environment, as well as, ill-conditioned arenas similar to earthquake zones. The obtained results have been satisfactory in all aspects, and improvements are...
Decentralized adaptive control of large-scale affine and nonaffine nonlinear systems
, Article IEEE Transactions on Instrumentation and Measurement ; Volume 58, Issue 8 , 2009 , Pages 2459-2467 ; 00189456 (ISSN) ; Menhaj, M. B ; Karimi Ghartemani, M ; Saboori, I ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
This paper presents a decentralized adaptive control design for a class of large-scale nonlinear systems with unknown subsystems. When the subsystems are modeled by affine equations, a direct adaptive controller is devised based on the Lyapunov theory, so that the stability of the closed-loop system is guaranteed by introducing a suitably driven adaptive rule. A neuro-based structure is proposed when the subsystems are nonaffine, and the stability analysis is also performed based on the Lyapunov theory. Moreover, the unknown interactions among the subsystems are considered as having a nonlinear function against the simple form considered for the affine case. The proposed controllers are...
Decentralized Control of a Multi-DG Microgrid in Islanded Mode of Operation
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Karimi, Houshang (Supervisor) ; Karimi, Masoud (Supervisor)
Abstract
A control strategy for islanded (autonomous) operation of a microgrid consisting of two Distributed Generation (DG) units is proposed in this thesis. The DG units are connected together in a radial configuration. Each DG unit utilizes a voltage-sourced converter (VSC) to interface to its dedicated load. The DG units and the loads are to operate in the islanded mode of operation. To provide autonomous operation for the microgrid, voltage and frequency of the loads should be regulated. The proposed control strategy utilizes (i) an internal oscillator for frequency control in an open loop manner and (ii) a decentralized servomechanism controller to regulate the load voltage. The microgrid is...

Abstract
Distributed generation (DG) units are often interfaced to the main grid using power electronic converters including voltage-source converters (VSCs). A VSC offers dc/ac power conversion, high controllability, and fast dynamic response. Because of nonlinearities, uncertainties, and system parameters’ changes involved in the nature of a grid-connected renewable DG system, conventional linear control methods cannot completely and efficiently address all control objectives. In this paper, a nonlinear adaptive control scheme based on adaptive backstepping strategy is presented to control the operation of a grid-connected renewable DG unit. As compared to the popular vector control technique, the...

Adolf Grünbaum on the steady-state theory and Creatio continua of matter out of nothing
, Article Zygon ; Volume 46, Issue 4 , 2011 , Pages 857-871 ; 05912385 (ISSN) ; Sharif University of Technology
2011
Abstract
The ideas of creatio ex nihilo of the universe and creatio continua of new matter out of nothing entered the arena of natural science with the advent of the Big Bang and the steady-state theories in the mid-twentieth century. Adolf Grünbaum has tried to interpret the steady-state theory in such a way, to show that the continuous formation of new matter out of nothing in this theory can be explained purely physically. In this paper, however, it will be shown that Grünbaum's interpretation encounters at least three problems: not distinguishing between material and efficient causes, inconsistency, and misconceiving the law of density conservation
A distortion-free phase-locked loop system for FACTS and power electronic controllers
, Article Electric Power Systems Research ; Volume 77, Issue 8 , 2007 , Pages 1095-1100 ; 03787796 (ISSN) ; Sharif University of Technology
2007
Abstract
This paper presents a single-phase phase-locked loop (PLL) system which is primarily free from the double-frequency ripples from which the conventional PLL system suffers. The proposed PLL is then extended to reject the harmonic components from the input signal and to estimate the phase-angle and frequency of the distorted input signal with no error. Three units of the proposed PLL can be used in three-phase power systems, such as FACTS and HVDC converters, to estimate the phase-angles of the individual phases with no double-frequency ripples and without sensitivity to the presence of harmonics and inter-harmonics. This makes the proposed PLL unique and desirable for applications which...

Abstract
A novel three-phase magnitude-phase-locked-loop system (3MPLL) for use in the general area of three-phase (power, energy and power electronic) systems is introduced. The proposed 3MPLL suppresses the noise and distortion from the input signal, mitigates the unbalance, and synthesizes the instantaneous positive-sequence component of the input signal; thus it operates as a nonlinear adaptive notch (or band-pass) filter. The 3MPLL also adaptively tracks and estimates the magnitude, phase angle, and frequency of the input signal; thus, its operation as a nonlinear state estimator. Characteristics of the 3MPLL including its mathematical equations as well as steady-state and dynamic responses are...
A Study of Iran Gas Export Markets and Strategic Proposal for Entering
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Kermanshah, Ali (Supervisor)
Abstract
Possessing second place among gas reserve owner countries worldwide, Iran enjoys a very particular position in energy supply field. The crude oil is about to be replaced by natural gas in fuel sector because of growing demand for natural gas along with depletion of crude oil reserves. Some other drivers to this change are the increase in the known reserves of natural gas, the need to monetize stranded gas reserves and the environmental pressure to minimize the flaring of associated gas and carbon dioxide emissions. In such conditions the optimum consumption of these national abundant resources results in obtaining considerable revenues and strong presence of Iran in world consumption...
A Method for Querying on Encrypted XML Data
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Jalili, Rasool (Supervisor)
Abstract
When organizations prefer to outsource their data, security protection of data will be more important. Using cryptography in addition to access control techniques is a natural way for saving confidentiality of data against untrusted server. However, encryption and decryption of data result in database performance degradation. In such a situation all the information stored in encrypted form, one cannot make the selection on the database content any more. Data should be decrypted first, so an unwilling tradeoff between the security and performance is normally forced. The appropriate approaches to increase the performance are methods to deal directly with the encrypted data without firstly...
Analysis and Control Design for TCSC and PSS in a SMIB System Using Hopf Bifurcation
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Karimi, Masoud (Supervisor)
Abstract
Analysis and design of power systems are challenging due to ever increasing dimension of the system and also the nonlinearities involved in the system. The conventional approach is to use linear analysis tools and then investigate the nonlinear impacts by the means of computer simulations. This requires great deal of trial and error and it is not always a timely approach. In this project, we initiate a comprehensive nonlinear analysis for a single-machine infinite-bus system by studying a Hopf bifurcation in its dynamics. We use results of our nonlinear analysis to study how a capacitive compensation such as TCSC works. Subsequently, we design a nonlinear controller for a PSS to have...

Abstract
Today many applications produce data stream that grow continuously over time. Classification is an important task in mining this data. One of the major challenges in classification of data streams is that the underlying concept of data may change over time; this needs updating the classification model. Many of traditional classification algorithms are adapted for classifying data streams. Evolutionary algorithms are stochastic methods that have been successfully applied to a wide range of optimization problems. Harmony search is a new evolutionary algorithm that convergence to global optimum and can be applied to discrete and continuous data. The evolutionary nature of classifying data...

Abstract
Nowadays, finding suppliers of goods and materials is easier than the past, because of developments in communications technology. Therefore, some of supply chains have expanded their relations to global area and select international partners. With an increase in the scope of suppliers available, supplier management sections encounter a large number of suppliers to choose from, and loads of information to process. Therefore proper methods must be adopted in order to evaluate the suppliers. One way is to create credit levels and ranking the suppliers according to past cooperation. Implementation of this method requires the use of tools that provide Comprehensive analysis of the occult rules...
Application of Z-Source Inverter in High Voltage and Multiple Output dc-dc Power Supplies
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Kaboli, Shahriyar (Supervisor)
Abstract
High voltage dc-dc converters are widely used in industrial applications. One of the methods for generating the high voltage is series connection of isolated voltage sources which can be produced by a multiple output converter. One major problem of multiple output converters is their cross regulation. In this project, the operation of a full-bridge based dc-dc converter (FBBC) is investigated in both single output and multiple output cases and analytical expressions for its output voltage and cross regulation are derived. Then, the effect of different parameters of the converter on the cross regulation is studied. It has been shown that increasing the input voltage of the converter improves...
