Modeling and Simulation of Gas Absorption in Hollow Fiber Membrane Contactors Using Nanofluids
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Molaei Dehkordi, Asghar (Supervisor)
Abstract
Today, the usage of hollow membrane contactors is considered by the researchers as a novel solution in the separation and purification industry, including the sweetening of gas. Improving the performance of these devices requires a more detailed study of the process factors and changes in its chemistry. Hence, providing a suitable mathematical model by examining the details of the flow pattern within the contactor is based on the computational fluid dynamics technique in the agenda. Also, improving the absorption of components such as carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide from the gas mixture using chemical absorbents such as monoethanolamine will be investigated. The change in the mass...
Condition Monitoring and Fault Diagnosis of Rolling Element Bearing in Phase Space
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Behzad, Mehdi (Supervisor)
Abstract
The failure in rolling element bearings as an important part of rotary machine can lead to machine breakdown.Consequently, bearings can reduce reliability of these components and therefore a maintenance strategy is essential to keep reliability in a desired level. The first and primitive strategy is called breakdown or unplanned maintenance. The next is preventive or planned maintenance. In this scheme, maintenance is done after a specified time period irrespective of machine health status. Out of place maintenance is the disadvantage of preventive maintenance. The most effective generation of maintenance strategy is condition based maintenance (CBM) which suggests maintenance decision based...

Abstract
With the extensive use and the growing popularity of file sharing in peer-to-peer (P2P) networks, the distribution of copyrighted files and the propagation of malwares have also increased. The increasing growth of these crimes multiplies the necessity of forensic investigation in order to detect the offenders. The yet proposed methods have sought to gather some proofs for forensic investigation by the application of some changes in clients’ programs and a constant monitoring of the network. These methods, however, have some limitations which have rendered useless the results of their application in real environments. Moreover, the important issues like the detection of the file source have...

Abstract
Distributed generation (DG) units are often interfaced to the main grid using power electronic converters including voltage-source converters (VSCs). A VSC offers dc/ac power conversion, high controllability, and fast dynamic response. Because of nonlinearities, uncertainties, and system parameters’ changes involved in the nature of a grid-connected renewable DG system, conventional linear control methods cannot completely and efficiently address all control objectives. In this paper, a nonlinear adaptive control scheme based on adaptive backstepping strategy is presented to control the operation of a grid-connected renewable DG unit. As compared to the popular vector control technique, the...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Nouri Borujerdi, Ali (Supervisor)
Abstract
The aim of this research is to consider the effect of geometric changes on pumping performance of two phase gas-fluid flow in a vertical pipe. The idea is to inject a light gas to the bottom of a tube full of fluid so we will obtain an upward flow due to density differences. Potential benefits of this device are numerous such as dredging of river estuaries and harbors, sludge extraction in sewage treatment plant, water treatment and many others. There are almost four distinct flow patterns which occurs in the rise pipe, bubbly flow, slug flow, churn flow and annular flow that each of them require special conditions. heat transfer between two phases, phase changes, mass and volume rate...

Abstract
Progress in analysis of multicomponent mixtures and processes focused on the interpretation of the multivariate responses, rely on the combination of sophisticated instrumental techniques and suitable chemometric methods. Among the present chemometric method, curve resolution techniques have a wide application in the analysis of multicomponent mixtures and processes. Chemometric resolution techniques are used in the present work. At the first, Essential oil of green and black cardamoms was extracted by hydrodistillation and was analyzed by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Due to the fact that the essential oils are complex mixtures, strong overlap is observed between the peaks....

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Namvar, Mehrzad (Supervisor) ; Karimi, Hoshang (Supervisor)
Abstract
Three-phase voltage source converter (VSC) is vastly utilized in the renewable energy resource and distributed generation (DG) systems interface units due to its high controllability and flexibility. Because of the high nonlinear nature of the system, the gird-connected inverter shows poor performance if the conventional control scheme are used. In this thesis, a new control scheme based on backstepping strategy is presented for control of a grid connected DG systems. The proposed scheme is responsible for regulating the active and reactive power components of the VSC power of the DG system. The VSC of the DG system is connected to a stiff utility grid through an L-type filter. In the first...
Transmission Expansion Planning Considering Uncertainty in Generation and N-1 Criterion
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Ehsan , Mehdi (Supervisor)
Abstract
In order to reduce investment and operation costs of the power systems, transmission expansion planning is inevitable. In fact, transmission expansion planning is to determine when, where and how many lines need to be added to power system with a minimum of investment and operating costs. In this thesis, transmission expansion planning has been performed at uncertainty in generation and N-1 criterion condition where uncertainty in generation means uncertainty in the moment of adding power plant to power system. In previous studies, transmission expansion planning was performed with DC-load flow in which, the power loss and voltage profiles were ignored due to the approximation in the...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Karimi Taheri , Ali (Supervisor) ; Abbasi, Mehdi (Supervisor)
Abstract
The A-286 superalloy is an iron-nickel base alloy having properties such as oxidation resistance and high mechanical strength. In addition, good producibility and high workability are the important properties of this alloy. In the present work dynamic restoration mechanism of A-286 supper alloy during thermo-mechanical processing has been studied. The aim is to verify the dominant restoration mechanism in different deformation conditions and also to determine the desire deformation parameters for hot rolling. In this regard, utilizing compression test in the range of 950 to 1100ºC and strain rate of 0.001 to 1 per second, the strain-stress curve for this alloy was obtained. After correction...
Intraday Stock Price and Insider Trading Pattern on the Tehran Stock Exchange
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Barakchian, Mehdi (Supervisor) ; Ebrahim Nejad, Ali (Co-Supervisor)
Abstract
We study intraday patterns of trading volume, size, return, and volatility using the Tehran Stock Exchange high frequency data from 2008 to 2015. Intraday test results indicate that trade size and volume follow a J-shape behavior, whereas return and return volatility exhibit an L-shape pattern. To examine the behavior of informed traders as predicted by Barclay and Warner’s (1993), we examine midsize volume and find that it has a higher price impact compared to other trade sizes, which is consistent with the predictions of Barclay and Warner’s (1993) stealth-trading hypothesis. However, our findings do not support the intraday stealth trading pattern, as insiders prefer to trade in low and...

Abstract
Demand forecasting plays an important role as a decision support tool in power system management, especially in smart grid and liberalized power market. In this paper, a demand forecasting method is presented by using support vector regression (SVR). The proposed method is applied to practical hourly data of the Greater Tehran Electricity Distribution Company. The SVR parameters are selected by using a grid optimization process and an investigation on different kernel functions. Moreover, correlation analysis is used to find exogenous variables. Acceptable accuracy of load prediction is shown by comparing the result of SVR model to that of the artificial neural networks and the actual data,...

Novel type of two-impinging-jets reactor for solid-liquid enzyme reactions
, Article AIChE Journal ; Volume 52, Issue 2 , 2006 , Pages 692-704 ; 00011541 (ISSN) ; Sharif University of Technology
2006
Abstract
The isomerization of D-glucose to D-fructose using the immobilized glucose isomerase, as a typical model system of solid-liquid enzyme reactions has been carried out in a novel type of two-impinging-jets reactor (TIJR), which is characterized by a rotating inner cylinder in a stationary one. Because of the impinging process, turbulence, and complex trajectory of the solid particles within the reactor, the fractional conversion of glucose obtained in the TIJR increased dramatically compared to that obtained by conventional reaction systems. A compartment model was considered to describe the pattern of flow [residence time distribution (RTD) of solid particles] within the TIJR. Considering...
Optimal Design of Partial State-Feedback Controllers
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Karimi, Houshang (Supervisor) ; Karimi, Masoud (Supervisor)
Abstract
Design of optimal controllers for nonlinear systems and even for linear systems is one of the most important parts of the control science. In optimal controller design, our aim is to maximize or minimize some kind of cost function associated with that particular problem. Such cost functions are usually combining the overall control effort, system’s energy, or some other important specifications of the system. Explicit solution for linear quadratic controllers exists under some mild conditions such as stabilizability of the system. The solution is in the form of a full state-feedback law. But in practical problems, we may not have access to all of the system state variables. The problem can...
An Investigation into the Hot Tensile Properties of a Heat Resistant Steel
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Karimi Taheri, Ali (Supervisor)
Abstract
The microstructures of stainless steels consist of an austenitic matrix with almost continuous network of primery carbides. This class of steel had replaced the traditional super alloys with a reduction in costs and has similar properties under conditions of creep, which is one of the principal degradation mechanisms leading to failure in service at elevated temperaturs , therefore, their mechanical properties such as tensile strength and creep resistance are particularly important in hot deformation. Recently the effects of temperature and aging time on static strain aging in worked stainless steel have been investigated. In this study the deformation behavior of HP-series austenitic...

, Article International Journal of Hydrogen Energy ; Volume 34, Issue 3 , 2009 , Pages 1275-1291 ; 03603199 (ISSN) ; Memari, M ; Sharif University of Technology
2009
Abstract
A compartment model was developed to describe the flow pattern of gas within the dense zone of a membrane-assisted fluidized-bed reactor (MAFBR), in the bubbling mode of operation for steam reforming of methane both with (adiabatic) and without (isothermal) entering oxygen. Considering such a flow pattern and using the experimental data reported elsewhere [Roy S, Pruden BB, Adris AM, Grace JR, Lim CJ. Fluidized-bed steam methane reforming with oxygen input. Chem Eng Sci 1999; 54:2095-2102.], the parameters of the developed model (i.e., number of compartments for the bubble and emulsion phases) were determined and fair agreements were obtained between model predictions and experimental data....
