Abstract
Tunable metasurfaces can shift their resonant frequency through different approaches, one of which is applying mechanical deformations. Here, we show the effects of two key factors on the tunability of deformable metasurfaces; the resonator geometry and substrate stiffness. To show the effects, we compared the tunability of unit cells with three resonator geometries and three common substrates at microwave frequencies from 1 GHz to 10 GHz under a given mechanical deformation. We showed that the resonator geometry affects the deformation field, as a consequence, causes different resonant frequency shifts. Moreover, it affects the stress field in the metasurface which in turn limits the...

Abstract
Tunable metamaterials functionalities change in response to external stimuli. Mechanical deformation is known to be an efficient approach to tune the electromagnetic response of a deformable metamaterial. However, in the case of large mechanical deformations, which are usually required to fully exploit the potential of the tunable metamaterials, the linear elastic mechanical analysis is no longer suitable. Nevertheless, nonlinear mechanical analysis is missing in the studies of mechanically tunable metamaterials. In this paper, we study the importance of considering nonlinearity in mechanical behavior when analyzing the response of a deformable metamaterial and its effects on electromagnetic...

Abstract
We leverage the crucial hyperelastic properties of a multifunctional structured surface to optimize the reconfigurability of the electromagnetic transmission under large nonlinear mechanical deformations. This multiphysics, multifunctional, hyperelastic structured surface (HSS) offers two simultaneous intriguing functionalities; tunability and switchability. It is made of copper reso-nators and a Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) substrate, which is one of the most favorable deformable substrates due to its hyperelastic behavior. The proposed HSS is fabricated via an original cost-effective technique and the multiphysics functionalities are captured in both experimental tests and numerical...

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology ; Naghdabadi, Reza (Supervisor) ; Sohrabpour, Saeed (Supervisor) ; Goudarzi, Taha (Co-Supervisor)
Abstract
Electromagnetic metamaterials are designed artificial materials with sub-wavelength resonant inclusions. They can exhibit extraordinary properties such as negative permittivity, negative permeability, and anomalous reflection/refraction. Metasurfaces are 2D counterparts of metamaterials. Here, we proposed a framework for the multiscale multiphysics analysis of deformable metasurfaces. Nonlinear mechanical analysis (Geometry and material behavior), periodic boundary conditions, homogenization, multiscale analysis, and electromagnetic analysis are implemented in this framework. Benefiting from the framework, we proposed a multifunctional hyperelastic structured surface that can generate...

Abstract
In qualitative content analysis research with the aim of identifying areas of language impairmenthigh-functioning Persian-speaking autistic children, ten subjects were observed during fifteen training sessions which were the cognitive block of a three-block training program. Each session lasted 90 minutes and was video recorded. Prior to this, focus group interviews with specialists and semi-structured interviews with mothers and parallel to that focus group interviews with mothers were handled all of which were audio recorded. After two levels of initial and second coding, a final list of areas of impairment in the language of high-functioning Persian-speaking autistic children, that...
Investigating the Behaviour of Some Kind of Fibre-reinforced Concrete
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Khonsari, Vahid (Supervisor)
Abstract
While there are many advantages associated with concrete, including high compressive strength, durability and so forth, on the contrary, it has several disadvantages which may make engineers somewhat reluctant to use it. These include low tensile strength, high brittleness, low resistance to impact, large dimensions of structural cross sections, etc. In recent years, there have been many attempts to surmount these disadvantages by various means such as adding pozzolans, using FRPs, fibres, etc. In this project, the effects of using a special type of high strength steel fibre is studied. In order to investigate the effect of this fibre on the compressive behavior of concrete, 30 cylindrical...
Improving Robustness of Deep Neural Networks Against Adversarial Examples in Image
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Kasaei, Shohreh (Supervisor)
Abstract
Despite widespread applications and high performance of deep neural networks in the fields of computer vision, they have been shown to be vulnerable to adversarial examples. An adversarial example is a perturbated image that the magnitude of its difference with its corresponding natural image is small and yet given such example, the network produces incorrect output. In recent years, many approaches have been proposed to increase the robustness of DNNs against adversarial examples with adversarial training being proposed as the most effective defense measure. Approaches based on adversarial training try to increase the robustness of the network by training on the adversarial examples. One of...
Development of a dynamic long-term water allocation model for agriculture and industry water demands
, Article Water Resources Management ; Volume 24, Issue 9 , 2010 , Pages 1717-1746 ; 09204741 (ISSN) ; Ardakanian, R ; Sharif University of Technology
2010
Abstract
Demands growth and water resources limitation, enforce water sector policy makers to integrate water supply-demand interactions in a coherent framework for efficient water allocation. Water supply-demand interaction, changes long-term trend of water demands, which in turn has a substantial influence on water allocation. Researches on water allocation modeling lack adequate projection of relationship between water supply and demand. Socio-economic factors representing water allocation stakeholders' benefits, account for the main share of water supply-demand interaction. Identification, representation and consideration of these factors in a water allocation model, is the main limitation of...

Abstract
Site reactivity of some enol-imines derived from N-aryl formamides with pentachloropyridine under basic conditions in dry CH3 CN was investigated. The aromatic nucleophilic substitution of pentachloropyridine with enol-imines occurs at the 4-position of pyridine ring by both oxygen and nitrogen site of enol-imines. Nucleophilic attack by the oxygen of enol-imine gave corresponding oximino compounds as a mixture of E- and Z-isomers. In contrast, nucleophilic attack by the nitrogen of enol-imine gave the unexpected N,N-di-substituted aryl compounds. The structures of all the compounds were confirmed by IR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR and 19F NMR spectroscopy as well as elemental analysis and...

, Article European Journal of Mechanics, A/Solids ; Volume 29, Issue 4 , July–August , 2010 , Pages 664-674 ; 09977538 (ISSN) ; Khoei, A. R ; Sharif University of Technology
2010
Abstract
In this paper, an analysis of kinematics of the isotropic elastic Cosserat continuum is presented in infinitesimal and finite deformations. Emphasis is given on the applicability of corotational stress rates for hypoelasticity in micro-polar continua. A non-linear finite element analysis is performed with an explicit formulation of tangent stiffness matrices in the case of Truesdell stress and couple stress rates. A comprehensive path-dependent procedure is employed based on the arc-length method to calculate the stability points and handle the snap-back problem. Finally, the accuracy and efficiency of method are illustrated by numerical examples
Parallel Lagrange interpolation on k-ary n-cubes with maximum channel utilization
, Article Journal of Supercomputing ; Volume 46, Issue 1 , 2008 , Pages 1-14 ; 09208542 (ISSN) ; Sarbazi Azad, H ; Khodaie, E ; Navi, K ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
This paper proposes an efficient parallel algorithm for computing Lagrange interpolation on k-ary n-cube networks. This is done using the fact that a k-ary n-cube can be decomposed into n link-disjoint Hamiltonian cycles. Using these n link-disjoint cycles, we interpolate Lagrange polynomial using full bandwidth of the employed network. Communication in the main phase of the algorithm is based on an all-to-all broadcast algorithm on the n link-disjoint Hamiltonian cycles exploiting all network channels, and thus, resulting in high-efficiency in using network resources. A performance evaluation of the proposed algorithm reveals an optimum speedup for a typical range of system parameters used...
Robust control of an autonomous four-wire electronically-coupled distributed generation unit
, Article IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery ; Volume 26, Issue 1 , September , 2011 , Pages 455-466 ; 08858977 (ISSN) ; Yazdani, A ; Iravani, R ; Sharif University of Technology
2011
Abstract
This paper proposes a control strategy for the autonomous (islanded) operation of a four-wire, electronically-coupled distributed generation (DG) unit which can feed a highly unbalanced load, e.g., due to the presence of single-phase loads. In the grid-connected mode, the power-electronic interface of the DG unit enables the exchange of real and reactive power with the distribution network, based on the conventional dq-frame current control strategy. The current control scheme is disabled subsequent to the detection of an islanding event, and the proposed controller is activated. The proposed control strategy utilizes: i) an internal oscillator to maintain the island frequency and ii) a...

Abstract
The triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) is a promising technology for mechanical energy harvesting. TENG has proven to be an excellent option for power generation but typically TENGs output power drops significantly in humid environments. In this work, the effect of electrode’s material on power output, considering smooth and nanostructured porous structures with various surface hydrophobicity, is investigated under various humidity conditions. A vertical contact-separation mode TENG is experimentally and numerically studied for four surface morphologies of Ti foil, TiO2 thin film, TiO2 nanoparticulated film, and TiO2 nanotubular electrodes. The results show that the TENG electrical output in...

Abstract
A new and fast method for the preparation of aminals is reported from the reaction of aromatic aldehydes and secondary amines in the presence of potassium carbonate in high yields. The aminal can be converted to the corresponding iminum salt in reaction with acetyl chloride very easily and in very short time with high yield. Addition of trialkylphosphite, as one possible nucleophile, to the prepared iminium salt produces the α-amino phosphonate in very high yield
A combinational adaptive noise canceller using filter bank

Abstract
This paper proposes a novel combinational Adaptive Noise Canceller (ANC), which is suitable for non stationary noise environments. Pre-filter bank structure improves the convergence rate leading to less error in real-time applications. During our investigations, we have found out adaptive algorithms have better performance for low frequency subbands. Thus, by using Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) in each subband, a simplified version of variable step-size algorithms has been employed in low frequency subbands; while for high frequency subbands, some conventional techniques have been used. Simulation results show that combination of adaptive and conventional methods have better performance...

Abstract
Enforcing dynamic and confidential access control policies is a challenging issue of data outsourcing to external servers due to the lack of trust towards the servers. In this paper, we propose a scalable yet flexible access control enforcement mechanism when the underlying relational data, on which access policies are defined, has been shared through a secret sharing scheme. For sharing values of an attribute in a relation, the attribute is assigned a secret distribution key and its values are split and distributed among data servers according to a Shamir based secret sharing scheme. Given access control policies over attributes of the relation schema, access to distribution keys, used...

Multivariable servomechanism controller for autonomous operation of a distributed generation unit: design and performance evaluation
, Article IEEE Transactions on Power Systems ; Volume 25, Issue 2 , 2010 , Pages 853-865 ; 08858950 (ISSN) ; Davison, E. J ; Iravani, R ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
A linear time-invariant (LTI) robust servomechanism controller for islanded (autonomous) operation of a distributed generation (DG) unit and its local load is proposed. The DG unit utilizes a voltage-sourced converter (VSC) as the interface medium. The controller design is obtained by introducing a new optimal controller design procedure, in conjunction with a proposed non-conservative robustness constraint. The proposed controller utilizes 1) an internal oscillator for frequency control and 2) a robust servomechanism controller (RSC) to regulate the island voltage. Despite uncertainty of the load parameters, the proposed controller guarantees robust stability and pre-specified performance...
Acrylamidevinyl acetate copolymer as a new UCST copolymer: Phase transition and aggregation behavior; an experimental and theoretical study

Abstract
A high sensitive upper critical solution temperature (UCST) copolymer was synthesized through free radical copolymerization with acrylamide (AAm) and vinyl acetate (VA). The UCST behavior is due to a combination of hydrogen bonds and electrostatic potentials between copolymer chains. Turbidimetry, dynamic light scattering, and rheology studies were used to determine the phase transition and aggregation behavior. It is indicated that copolymer with 80% AAm has a phase transition temperature between 38 and 38.2 °C, which is suitable for releasing fever medicine. Also, the temperature gradient for the complete dissolution of the copolymer is 2 °C. The molecular dynamics simulations at a...
Aging of piezoelectric composite transducers
, Article Journal of Applied Physics ; Volume 89, Issue 4 , 2001 , Pages 2322-2326 ; 00218979 (ISSN) ; Bagheri, R ; Karimi Taheri, A ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
The effect of aging on some piezoelectric properties, including d33, K33, and d33g33 in 1-3 composite transducers has been evaluated in this article. The spontaneous changes of properties of piezocomposites (lead zirconate titanate/epoxy) and piezoceramic under zero external stress was measured at 5 days and 500 days after poling. The results show that the aging behavior in piezoelectric composites is very much dependent on the ceramic content. The composite material behaves similar to a piezoceramic at high volume fraction of ceramic, i.e., greater than 25 vol. %. At low volume fraction of ceramic, however, the rate of aging is much higher in piezoelectric composite compared to that of the...
