Investigating Conformal Vector Field on Riemannian Manifolds
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Fanai, Hamid Reza (Supervisor)
Abstract
At first the killing vector fields will be investigated. Conditions are introduced for the hypersurface of a Riemannian manifold with a killing vector field to be equipped with the same killing vector field. Then 2-killing vector field is studied and its relation with killing vector fields and monotone vector fields is presented. After that conformal vector fields are discussed and conditions are introduced in order that the Riemannian manifold equipped with a conformal vector field, isisometric to n-dimensional sphere with constant curvature. Finally we will present the conditions which conformal vector field is a 2-killing vector field. Then we will present the results in which the...

Abstract
Deployment of battery energy storage system (BESS) is a viable option to alleviate the inherent power fluctuation of wind farms. In this paper, a novel model predictive control (MPC) scheme is presented in order to control the BESS dispatch in an integrated wind farm. The constraints of BESS are formulated and are taken into account in optimization problem. The predictive control is based on receding horizon which shows robustness and improved performance compared to the conventional BESS control strategies. The objective function is defined in order to minimize the deviation of wind power production relative to the scheduled production. The results showed the effectiveness of the proposed...

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology ; Oraee, Hashem (Supervisor)
Abstract
In this dissertation, two parts of research has been conducted. First, with the aim of minizing the fluctuations of power output of wind farms and the need for energy storage system, optimization of wind farm (WF) layout has been studied. Deployment of battery energy storage system (BESS) is a viable option to alleviate the inherent power fluctuation of wind farms. In this thesis and based on the power spectrum density (PSD) theorem, it is hown that the WF layout affects not only the total harvested energy but also the level of power fluctuation, which in turn influences required capacity of battery energy storage system (BESS) needed to mitigate the inherent power fluctuation of the wind...
Efficient Data Aggregation in Mobile Wireless Sensor Networks
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Habibi, Jafar (Supervisor)
Abstract
Due to the advances in wireless communications and electronics over the last few years, the development of networks of low-cost, low-power, and multifunctional sensors has received increasing attention. Most important constraints of this network are energy and bandwidth. Data aggregation is one of the effective approaches for reducing energy consumption in wireless sensor networks. Recent research on data collection reveals that, rather than reporting data through long, multi-hop and error-prone routes to a static sink using tree or cluster network structure, allowing and leveraging sink mobility is more promising for energy efficient data gathering. In this work we proposed an effective...

Abstract
Optimization of wind farm (WF) layout has been studied in the literature with the objective of maximizing the wind energy capture. Based on the power spectrum density (PSD) theorem, this paper shows that the WF layout affects not only the total harvested energy but also the level of power fluctuation, which in turn influences required capacity of battery energy storage system (BESS) needed to mitigate the inherent power fluctuation of the wind farms. Since both harvested energy level and BESS capacity directly influence the profit of WF owner, the effect of WF layout on these quantities are taken into account simultaneously and WF layout optimization problem is redefined. Genetic algorithm...

Abstract
This paper proposes a new method to detect and classify all kinds of faults, capacitor switching, and load switching in a power system network based on wavelet transform and support vector machines (SVMs). In this regard, a sample of a power system is simulated via MATLAB/Simulink, and by reading the voltage of the point of common coupling and using the wavelet transform, the differences of the outputs of the wavelet transform are investigated. The SVM approach is employed to distinguish the type of the transient (capacitor switching, fault, and/or load switching) in use for the high level outputs of the wavelet transform. Similar to neural networks, this method, which is based on learning,...
Power System Voltage Improvement through Coordinationg Reactive Power Resources on a Smart Grid Framework
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Abbaspour Tehrani Fard, Ali (Supervisor)
Abstract
With the increasing penetration of renewable energies as distributed generation (DG) in power systems, technical problems arise in both distribution and transmission system level. Voltage rise is the main barrier for connection of DGs in rural areas, while excessive reactive power demand from transmission system is the major concern for Transmission System Operators (TSO). Here, a centralized control scheme based on the Smart Grid is proposed to reduce the impact on the transmission system voltages and improve its stability, while mitigating the voltage rise issue in the distribution network. Reactive power output of DGs, substation capacitors and tap setting of transmission transformer are...
QoS-aware Dynamic Cache Updating Policies in a Wireless CDN
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Ashtiani, Farid (Supervisor) ; Mir-Mohseni, Mahtab (Supervisor)
Abstract
Caching is the process of storing part of popular contents near the users, which not only results in better traffic balance, but also reduces the delay of content delivery. Due to limited cache capacities and time-varying nature of contents popularity, using a proper replacement policy for cached contents during the heavy traffic hours is necessary. Many of the existing methods have ignored the dynamics of requests. Also, most of the previous works have focused on parameters other than QoS characteristics as the performance metric. We propose a cache updating policy for wireless networks considering dynamic popularity for file requests. Our model is a wireless heterogeneous network consisting...

Abstract
This article proposes a bang-bang auxiliary frequency control scheme for doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG)-based wind turbines. It results in the DFIGs emulate the primary frequency control of conventional units and, thus, increases the power system frequency stability. Indeed, the suggested hysteresis controller causes to deliver the maximum extractable kinetic energy of DFIGs to the grid and consequently further enhance the power system frequency. This is accomplished using different frequency deviation indices, which determine the size of power mismatch and lead to an appropriate frequency response by the DFIGs. The operational constraints of the DFIGs are taken into account in the...

Abstract
The introduction of demand response concept, in addition to increment of penetration of distributed generation (DG) based on renewable energies, make opportunities for the novel control schemes to be integrated in power system on a smart grid framework. Voltage control methods in power systems needs proper coordination among reactive power resources and conventional volt/var control equipments. In this work, potential reactive power resources are investigated and then, reactive power output of renewable DG units and controllable loads along with operation of conventional voltage controllers are optimized using a centralized control scheme. Considering the variability of demand and...
