Fabrication and Characterization of Anode Supported Micro-tubular Solid Oxide Fuel Cells Prepared by Successive Non-aqueous Electrophoretic Deposition

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Keshavarz, Mitra (Author) ; Nemati, Ali (Supervisor) ; Paydar, Mohammad Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The commercial breakthrough of micro-tubular solid oxide fuel cells (MT-SOFCs) is still facing so many challenges because of the complexity of their manufacturing process and the high cost associated with them. By deploying electrophoretic deposition as a simple and cost-effective method, the different components of the fuel cells (the anode, electrolyte, and cathode) can deposit on the graphite rod as a sacrificial substrate. The next step is eliminating the sacrificial substrate which will make hollow rods of cell components. The results of this study show that the use of a particular type of pencil lead will have a minimal negative impact on the overall fuel cell performance, leading to a...

    Abstract
Tehran is one of the most polluted megacities in the world, and based on different studies, vehicular sources are responsible for most of the criteria pollutant emissions in this city. The number of vehicles on the streets has been increased drastically leading to growing amount of emission and this trend is continuing. In order to reduce the amount of vehicular emission, it is vital to investigate the factors affecting vehicles emission in this city. This could help to find efficient solutions to improve the situation. Hence, a low-cost methodology to estimate the vehicular emissions is developed. In this...

Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Hybrid Aluminum Matrix Composite Reinforced by Graphite Particles and Zirconium Oxide Nanoparticles Fabricated by Friction Stir Processing

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Keshavarz, Hossein (Author) ; Kokabi, Amir Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this research, aluminum matrix composites (AMCs) reinforced by different contents of zirconium dioxide nanoparticles, graphite microparticles, and a mixture of both with various hybrid ratios, into a cold-rolled Aluminum1050 as base metal, fabricated by 4-passes friction stir processing. Observations show that the processing of composites reinforced by Gr particles is significantly hard due to the low friction coefficient of graphite resulting in the decline in the maximum temperature during the process and the type of base metal. The mixtures of graphite and zirconia resulted in more homogenous dispersion of particles in the matrix due to deterring a drastic drop in friction coefficient...

Simulation of startup operation of an industrial twin-shaft gas turbine based on geometry and control logic

    , Article Energy ; Volume 183 , 2019 , Pages 1295-1313 ; 03605442 (ISSN) Keshavarz Mohammadian, P ; Saidi, M. H ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this paper, a transient model is developed to simulate the start-up operation of an industrial twin-shaft gas turbine based on real geometry and control logic. The components’ characteristic curves of the studied gas turbine were generated with the aid of CFD simulation tools and according to the real geometry of each component. The control logic of the studied gas turbine was simplified and coupled with the developed engine performance model. Also, the gas turbine actuators including variable inlet guide vanes, compressor bleed valves, and fuel valves were simulated so that their concurrent effects on the gas turbine transient behavior can be captured precisely. Moreover, the air-cooled...

    Constants of explosive limits

    , Article Chemical Engineering Science ; Volume 173 , 2017 , Pages 384-389 ; 00092509 (ISSN) Nassimi, A. M ; Jafari, M ; Farrokhpour, H ; Keshavarz, M. H ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
This work defines density factor as the ratio of before ignition density to after ignition density of the ignition mixture. This work provides an estimation method for explosive limits of various fuels under room temperature and pressure by showing that for a large universe of fuels, constant adiabatic flame temperature and density factor are appropriate approximations at the lower explosive limit while only a constant density factor might be an appropriate approximation at the upper explosive limit. Thus the assumption of a constant adiabatic flame temperature can be used in calculating lower explosive limit while the assumption of a constant density factor can be used in approximating...

Caching in Information Centric Software Defined Networks

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Keshavarz, Mohammad Hossein (Author) ; Pakravan, Mohammad Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Data traffic in communication network has increased steadily in recent years. Service requirements have also changed to become more complex. Moreover decrease in relative prices of computation and storage against communication encourages using more caching in these networks . Meanwhile increased use of encryption in internet has forced service providers who were willing to enter content distribution market to cooperate with content providers. But the cooperation is discouraged by willingness of both parties to hide their internal information. There are solutions proposed for interaction and information exchange between ISPs and CPs which are based on game theory. However, these solutions...

Equivalent Period and Damping of Soil-Structure Systems with Embedded Foundations in Layered Soil

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Keshavarz, Mohammad Reza (Author) ; Ghannad, Mohammad Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The main purpose of this study is to estimate the natural frequency and damping ratio for soil-structure systems with embedded foundation with sufficient accuracy. The results are then compared to guidelines in current seismic codes. This is done through an extensive parametric study using a set of non-dimensional parameters, which define the soil-structure systems. For this purpose a simplified soil-structure model is used. Although more rigorous models and numerical solutions are available, they are time consuming and not suitable for parametric study. Existing formula for seismic provisions for the equivalent period and damping ratio of soil-structure systems are based on studies on...

A new model for robust facility layout problem [electronic resource]

, Article Information Sciences, Elsevier ; Volume 278, 10 September 2014, Pages 498–509 Neghabi, H. (Hossein) ; Eshghi, Kourosh ; Salmani, Mohammad Hassan ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The Facility Layout Problem (FLP) is the problem of locating each department in a long plant floor without any overlap between departments in order to minimize the material handling cost. The main purpose of this study is to show the effectiveness of a robust approach to solve FLP. In this study, it is assumed that the departments’ length and width are not predetermined. For modeling this kind of uncertainty, the size of each department is considered as a bounded variable and two new parameters are also introduced to implement a robust approach. Moreover, a new adaptive algorithm is designed to determine the robust layout with respect to the decision makers’ requirements. Furthermore, the...

    Constructive Set Theories

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Jalali Keshavarz, Raheleh (Author) ; Ardeshir, Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
One of the most important variants of classical logic is intuitionistic logic, which has arisen from the contemporary studies in the foundation of mathematics. Suppose we want to investigate the foundation of mathematics from a constructive point of view. For this purpose, we can choose two different ways. The first one is to modify the classical set theory, ZFC, in a way that is valid from a constructive point of view and is enough to formulate constructive mathematics, as well. The second approach, which is somehow different from the first one, is a foundational and dependent codification of the same foundation in a way that completely reflects constructive views. In this work we will...

    Abstract
Homogenous dispersing of nanoparticles in a base fluid is an excellent way to increase the thermal performance of heat transfer devices especially Heat Pipes (HPs). As a wickless, cheap and efficient heat pipe, Pulsating Heat Pipes (PHPs) are important candidates for thermal application considerations. In the present research an Open Loop Pulsating Heat Pipe (OLPHP) is fabricated and tested experimentally. The effects of working fluid namely, water, Silica Coated ferrofluid (SC ferrofluid), and ferrofluid without surface coating of nanoparticles (ferrofluid), charging ratio, heat input, and application of magnetic field on the overall thermal performance of the OLPHPs are investigated....

Performance evaluation of the Bayesian and classical value at risk models with circuit breakers set up

    , Article International Journal of Computational Economics and Econometrics ; Volume 10, Issue 3 , 10 June , 2020 , Pages 222-241 ; Online ISSN: 1757-1189 Keshavarz Haddad, G ; Heidari, H ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Circuit breakers, like price limits and trading suspensions, are used to reduce price volatility in security markets. When returns hit price limits or missed, observed returns deviate from equilibrium returns. This creates a challenge for predicting stock returns and modelling value at risk (VaR). In Tehran Stock Exchange (TSE), the circuit breakers are applied to control for the excess price volatilities. This paper intend to address which models and what methodology should be applied by risk analysts to calculate the VaR when the returns are unobservable. To this end, we extend Wei’s (2002) model, in the framework of Bayesian Censored and Missing-GARCH approach, to estimate VaR for a share...

The profitability of pair trading strategy in stock markets: Evidence from Toronto stock exchange

, Article International Journal of Finance and Economics ; 2021 ; 10769307 (ISSN) Keshavarz Haddad, G ; Talebi, H ; Sharif University of Technology
John Wiley and Sons Ltd  2021
    Abstract
Market practitioners and speculators attempt to make benefits from the existence of market price gaps and profit opportunities by arbitrage strategies. Although some investors trade stocks based on the available financial and fundamental information of a particular share, there are others who make profits by risk hedging and swing trading opportunities. One of these strategies is pairs trading, which is a sub-category of statistical arbitrage. Pairs trading can assure reasonably a risk-free profit gaining. This paper aims to make a hypothetical portfolio composed of pairs of stocks by exploring a significant association between their prices in the Toronto Stock Exchange, TSX. We compare the...

    Abstract
In this paper, we consider a broadband secondary transmitter-receiver pair which interferes with N narrowband primary users and study the effect of cognition and cooperation on the maximum stable throughput. In our study we focus on four transmission protocols as well as two channel types, i.e., flat fading and frequency selective fading. In the cooperative protocols, the broadband transmitter relays the packets of the primary users which have not correctly decoded at the primary receiver. The analysis includes random packet arrivals at the transmitters which may impact on the maximum stable throughput. Moreover, sensing errors at the secondary user are considered. In this paper, we derive...

Temperature distribution on a gas turbine shaft exposed to swirl combustor flue

    , Article Journal of Thermophysics and Heat Transfer ; Volume 29, Issue 2 , 2015 , Pages 319-328 ; 08878722 (ISSN) Aghakashi, V ; Saidi, M. H ; Mozafari, A. A ; Keshavarz, P ; Sharif University of Technology
    2015
    Abstract
A gas turbine shaft is generally exposed to high-temperature gases and may seriously be affected and overheated duetotemperature fluctuationsinthe combustion chamber. Vortex flow inthe combustion chamber may increase the heat release rate and combustion efficiency, as well as control the location of energy release. However, this may result in excessive temperature on the combustor equipment and gas turbine shaft. In this study, a new gas turbine combustion chamber implementing a liner around the shaft and the liquid-fuel feeding system is designed and fabricated. The influences of parameters such as the Reynolds number and the equivalence ratio are studied. Experimental results are compared...

Asset Returns and Inflation Hedging in Iran

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Sattari, Mohammad Reza (Author) ; Keshavarz Haddad, Gholamreza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
After the fisher hypothesis about the relationship between asset returns and inflation, numerous studies tried to examine the accuracy of the hypothesis. Contradicted results continued to the proxy hypothesis by Fama (1981). In this thesis, after a thorough survey of the literature, both theoretically and empirically, in order to find the inflation hedging ability of the land, gold and stock in Iran, we try to find the hedging ability of the assets in Iran. Considering the seasonal characteristic of the data, we employed HEGY (1990) unit root test. Finally, by using vector error correction models we show that in the long run, stock and land hedge the wealth against inflation. In the short...

To Investigate Existence of Equity Premium Puzzel in Tehran Stock Exchange By Stochastic Dominance Method

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Esfahani, Mohammad Reza (Author) ; Keshavarz Haddad, Gholamreza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In the last 4 years, while the annual investment return on 5 years bank deposits was 25 percent; the total index of Tehran Stock Exchange on average grew by 155 percent. Why the investors are not so willing to invest in the stock market? This research deals with existence of equity premium puzzle in Tehran Stock Exchange. Therefore, the Total Price Index of exchange market is considered as a risky asset and the return on long-term (5 years) deposit is a proxy for risk free asset. Data is monthly and covers the first month of 1380 (Persian Calendar) to the beginning of the second month of 1391 (equivalent to Aug 2010 to Jan 2013); which is converted to real term using monthly inflation rate....

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Keshavarz Mohammadain, Poorya (Author) ; Saidi, Mohammad Hassan (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Detecting of coherent structures in bidirectional vortex combustion chamber is the original aim of this project. For this aim a numerical simulation is performed by using OpenFOAM, open-source CFD software. Also influence of fuel nozzle places in formation of coherent structures is analyzed. Effects of combustion in these structures and differences in cold and hot flows are analyzed too. There are papers that present influence of coherent structures in vortex burners and other applications, but based on reviews that are performed in this work, it seems that influence of coherent structures have not seen in bidirectional vortex chambers. So it can be one of innovations of this work. Swirl...

Over Education and Its Wage Consequences in the Labor Market of Iran

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Javaheri, Mohammad Amin (Author) ; Keshavarz Haddad, Gholamreza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
An increasing important issue faced by Iranian labor market at the current decade is the job positions which have been occupying by workers who are not match for them. Over the recent past years the supply of college educated labor has experienced a significant increase, while the demand side of the market has shrunk because of low economic growth. This study intends to examine intensity of the over-education on the individuals’ wage By making two alternative definitions for overeducaion namely; realized match and job analysis. To this end we use households’ income and expenditure survey for 2001, 2005, 2009 and 2012 in rural and urban areas. Theoretical background is based on the Duncan and...
