, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Keshavarz Kermani, Ali (Author) ; Akbarzadeh, Abbas (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Having the high strength to weight ratio has been made the composites special materials very important these days. The low density of aluminum and its appropriate corrosion properties make it a good choice for metallic matrix. Also, the high tensile strength of stainless steel fibers can helps as a reinforcement in the composite to improve its mechanical properties. Enhancing the bonding of composite’s components can helps it to develop its properties. Casting is an appropriate process for making an aluminum matrix containing steel fibers as reinforcement in a structural composite. In addition, rolling process can remove so many defects made by casting, and improve joining of fibers and...

    Mild Hybrid Vehicle Performance

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Keshavarz, Mostafa (Author) ; Mozafari, Ali Asghar (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Many studies on hybrid vehicles have been done in the past few years. The Full hybrid vehicles need a large number of batteries creating up to 300V to meet the required voltage of electric motor. The size and weight of the batteries cause some problems. This research investigates the mild hybrid vehicle. This vehicle includes a small electric motor and a high power internal combustion engine. In most cases the car’s driving force is created by internal combustion part. A small electric motor, which can operate as engine starter, generator and traction motor, is located between the engine and automatically shifted multi-gear transmission (gearbox). The clutch is used to disconnect the gearbox...

Damage Identification in Structures with Lamb Waves and Optimal Sensor Layout Designing

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Keshavarz Motamed, Pouyan (Author) ; Abedian, Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
This study presents the best layout with optimal number of sensors for an arbitrary monitoring area based on reference free damage detection and localization. In recent years, damage detection approaches with the concept of instantaneous baseline measurements in Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) with lamb wave propagation are being developed. An array of spars transducers is obligatory in SHM with lamb wave propagation, so that designing the best one is a concern for many researchers. To obtain the best sensors layout, damage localization process should be done for all definable sensors layouts in many different crack positions. Obviously, doing this seems not practical as wave propagation...

Equivalent Period and Damping of Soil-Structure Systems with Embedded Foundations in Layered Soil

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Keshavarz, Mohammad Reza (Author) ; Ghannad, Mohammad Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The main purpose of this study is to estimate the natural frequency and damping ratio for soil-structure systems with embedded foundation with sufficient accuracy. The results are then compared to guidelines in current seismic codes. This is done through an extensive parametric study using a set of non-dimensional parameters, which define the soil-structure systems. For this purpose a simplified soil-structure model is used. Although more rigorous models and numerical solutions are available, they are time consuming and not suitable for parametric study. Existing formula for seismic provisions for the equivalent period and damping ratio of soil-structure systems are based on studies on...

    , Article Physica A: Statistical Mechanics and its Applications ; Volume 466 , 2017 , Pages 570-582 ; 03784371 (ISSN) Agha Mohammad Ali Kermani, M ; Fatemi Ardestani, S. F ; Aliahmadi, A ; Barzinpour, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B.V  2017
    Abstract
Influence maximization deals with identification of the most influential nodes in a social network given an influence model. In this paper, a game theoretic framework is developed that models a competitive influence maximization problem. A novel competitive influence model is additionally proposed that incorporates user heterogeneity, message content, and network structure. The proposed game-theoretic model is solved using Nash Equilibrium in a real-world dataset. It is shown that none of the well-known strategies are stable and at least one player has the incentive to deviate from the proposed strategy. Moreover, violation of Nash equilibrium strategy by each player leads to their reduced...

Fabrication and Characterization of Anode Supported Micro-tubular Solid Oxide Fuel Cells Prepared by Successive Non-aqueous Electrophoretic Deposition

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Keshavarz, Mitra (Author) ; Nemati, Ali (Supervisor) ; Paydar, Mohammad Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The commercial breakthrough of micro-tubular solid oxide fuel cells (MT-SOFCs) is still facing so many challenges because of the complexity of their manufacturing process and the high cost associated with them. By deploying electrophoretic deposition as a simple and cost-effective method, the different components of the fuel cells (the anode, electrolyte, and cathode) can deposit on the graphite rod as a sacrificial substrate. The next step is eliminating the sacrificial substrate which will make hollow rods of cell components. The results of this study show that the use of a particular type of pencil lead will have a minimal negative impact on the overall fuel cell performance, leading to a...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Garoosi, Morteza (Author) ; Keshavarz Haddad, Gholamreza (Supervisor) ; Ebrahimnejad, Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
We study the ability of individual and institutional investors in predicting the performance of active mutual funds in Iran. Our dataset contains monthly inflow and outflow of mutual funds and monthly TNA invested by individual and institutional investors. To evaluate investor performance, we construct portfolios based on inflow and outflow of funds and estimate their alpha using the Carhart (1997) four-factor model. We find evidence that the net flow to the funds predicts their returns. Smart money effect is mainly driven by funds with high normalized outflow and high normalized inflow. Further, we separately evaluate the performance of individual and institutional flows and find that both...

Numerical Modeling and Optimization of Cold and Hot Powder Forming Processes

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology keshavarz hadad , Shahriyar (Author) ; Khoei, Amir Reza (Supervisor) ; Khalo, Ali Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this thesis, a shape optimization technique is presented for powder forming processes based on the genetic algorithm approach. The numerical modeling of powder compaction simulation is applied based on a large deformation formulation, powder plasticity behavior, and frictional contact algorithm. A Lagrangian finite element formulation is employed for large powder deformations. A cap plasticity model is used in numerical simulation of nonlinear powder behavior. The influence of powder-tool friction is simulated by the use of penalty approach in which a plasticity theory of friction is incorporated to model sliding resistance at the powder-tool interface. For hot compaction process coupled...

, Article Lecture Notes in Computer Science (including subseries Lecture Notes in Artificial Intelligence and Lecture Notes in Bioinformatics) ; Volume 4920 LNCS , 2008 , Pages 33-49 ; 03029743 (ISSN); 3540690166 (ISBN); 9783540690160 (ISBN) Jamzad, M ; Zahedi Kermani, Z ; Sharif University of Technology
    2008
    Abstract
The main concern of steganography (image hiding) methods is to embed a secret image into a host image in such a way that it causes minimum distortion to the host; to make it possible to extract a version of secret image from the host in such a way that the extracted version of secret image be as similar as possible to its original version (this should be possible even after usual attacks on the host image), and to provide ways of embedding secret images with larger size into a given host image. In this paper we propose a method that covers all above mentioned concerns by suggesting the idea of finding from an image data base, the most suitable host for a given secret image. In our method,...

    , Article 5th IEEE International Symposium on Signal Processing and Information Technology, Athens, 18 December 2005 through 21 December 2005 ; Volume 2005 , 2005 , Pages 578-582 Kermani, Z. Z ; Jamzad, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2005
    Abstract
The main concern of steganography (image hiding) methods is to embed a secret image into a host image in such a way that the host should remain as similar as possible to its original version. In addition the host image should remain robust with respect to usual attacks. In this paper we present a method that tries to cover all above mentioned concerns. The secret and host images are divided into blocks of size 4 × 4. Each block in secret image is taken as a texture pattern for which the most similar block is found among the blocks of the host image. The embedding procedure is carried on by replacing these small blocks of the secret image with blocks in host image in such a way that least...

Free Vibration Analysis of a Functionally Graded Nanotube Under an Initial Stress Using Nonlocal Elasticity Theory

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Jafarzadeh Kermani, Mona (Author) ; Eskandari, Morteza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this study, flexural vibration of a functionally graded nanotube under an initial stress is investigated. The small scale effect is taken into consideration based on Eringen’s nonlocal elasticity theory. The material properties are assumed to vary exponentially along the depth direction. The complete effect of the initial stress is taken into account in the problem formulation. The governing equations of motion are derived by using the Hamilton’s principle on the basis of the nonlocal Timoshenko beam theory. An analytical solution of the governing equations, for free vibration of a simply-supported nanotube is presented. Numerical results are presented to investigate the effect of the...

An All-Optical NoC with Multicasting Capability

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Askari Kermani, Saeedeh (Author) ; Hesabi, Shahin (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The importance of power consumption in high performance multiprocessors, combined with power reduction capability of on-chip optical interconnects, offers optical network-on-chip (ONoC) as a new technology solution which can deliver considerably higher bandwidth and lower latencies with significantly lower power dissipation than an interconnection network based only on electronic signaling. An on-chip network should be able to support multicast communications efficiently whether it is an optical or electrical network. On the other hand, multicast communications in optical networks-on-chip has been implemented using shared bus which is not scalable. Moreover, most of optical on-chip...

Approximation Algorithms for the Matroid-Constraint Maximum Subdeterminant

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Kermani, Fatemeh (Author) ; Ebrahimi Brojeni, Javad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
let Mn n be a positive semmi definite matrix and M:= (U; B) be a matroid. Consider the problem of finding S 2 B such that det(MS;S) is maximized, in witch MS; S is the submatrix of M, restricted to rows and columns of S. This problem has a variety of applications including page ranking algorithms. The problem above is an NP-hard problem in the general case. However, there are several approximating and estimating algorithms for some special cases, which are interesting. Also, exactly solving the problem is NP-hard, even for some special matroids. As an example, one can consider the uniform matroids. Khachiyan introduced a greedy algorithm with dd approximation factor. Afterward, Di summa et...

The Effect of Nominal Price on Stock Returns in Tehran Stock Exchange

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mohammadi Sepahvand, Alireza (Author) ; Ebrahimnejad, Ali (Supervisor) ; Barakchian, Mahdi (Co-Supervisor) ; Keshavarz Haddad, Gholamreza (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
Based on modern finance theory, valuation should not depend on nominal stock prices. However, evidence shows that the nominal price of stocks does matter in the U.S. stock market. In this paper, we examine the effect of nominal share prices on stock returns, using data between 2009 and 2017 form the Tehran Stock Exchange. Our results indicate that there is no significant relationship between nominal price and return on the Tehran Stock Exchange. By controlling for different important variables, the return differential between high price and low price stocks is insignificant and the results are robust to various specifications and tests. Furthermore, by using event study under the market...
