, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Outokesh, Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Keshtkar, Alireza (Supervisor) ; Sohbatzadeh, Hozhabr (Co-Supervisor)
Abstract
In this study, biosorption of selenium by Pseudomonas putida bacteria was investigated in both single and binary uptake systems. Bacteria cells were immobilized in the chitosan beads, to study impact of microorganism entrapment on the sorption capacity of the fabricated adsorbent. Uptake capacity increased by the entrapped bacterial weight percent up to 20 wt. %; but thereafter, sorption capacity gradually leveled off with an increase in the loading percentage of the bacterial cells. The effects of the three process variables including pH (2-6), biomass dosage (0.5-2.5 g/L) and initial concentration of selenium (50-250 mg/L) on the uptake performance of adsorbent were investigated, and...

Abstract
Power Distribution Unit (PDU) is a power supply unit that supplies various DC voltage levels for electric equipment. Reliability of PDU is very important in electrical systems. Buck converter is frequently used in PDU to provide the lower voltage levels than the source voltage level. The output capacitor of the buck converter is the main factor of failure. In this paper, we present a method to design a buck converter with almost no inductor current ripple. If the inductor current ripple is eliminated, the output capacitor can be removed from the converter. By removing the capacitor, the reliability and transient response of the converter can be improved considerably. The proposed method is...
Reliability Improvement of the High Voltage Power Supply Based on Interleaved Inverters
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Kaboli, Shahriyar (Supervisor)
Abstract
In some high voltage applications it is necessary for high voltage power supply (HVPS) to operate over a wide load and gain range. For instance a HVPS may be used to supply various microwave tubes. Our goal in this thesis is to design a HVPS which can provide a DC voltage between 0-15 KV and 0-5 KW. In convetional approaches, operating over wide load and gain range necessitates the switching frequency or duty cycle to swing over a wide range. This approach may disturb soft switching, consequently switching loss will increase. The control process will be more complex too. the wide swing range of switching frequency means that the HVPS needs to operate with low switching frequency too....

Abstract
The present study has been conducted to investigate the effect of inlet flow regimes on vertical velocity and concentration profiles of the turbidity current. Experiments carried out on small scale channel and Kaolin with a density of 2.65 kg/m3 and a mean particle diameter of 4.5 μm, was used to generate the currents. Velocities were obtained at a rate of 10 Hz using an acoustic Doppler velocimeter. Using the siphon sampling approach, the acoustic backscattering intensity was calibrated and concentration was determined using a backscattering analysis. Results showed that the ratio of maximum velocity height to the height of the current was around 0.4-0.5 in sub- and super-critical regimes....

Abstract
In this work, we attempted to develop an Implicit Coupled Density-Based (ICDB) solver using LU-SGS algorithm based on the AUSM+ up scheme in OpenFOAM. Then sonicFoam solver was modified to include viscous dissipation in order to improve its capability to capture shock wave and aerothermal variables. The details of the ICDB solver as well as key implementation details of the viscous dissipation to energy equation were introduced. Finally, two benchmark tests of hypersonic airflow over a flat plate and a 2-D cylinder were simulated to show the accuracy of ICDB solver. To verify and validate the ICDB solver, the obtained results were compared with other published experimental data. It was...

Abstract
The performance of a gas centrifuge that is used for isotopes separation is dependent on the gas flow inside it. In this study, for modeling the UF6 gas flow, an Implicit Coupled Density-Based (ICDB) solver, was developed in OpenFOAM. To validate the ICDB solver, the gas flow within the rotor in total reflux state was compared with the analytical solution obtained by Onsager model and the numerical solution obtained by the Fluent software. The results showed that the ICDB solver had acceptable accuracy and validity. Also the computational efficiency of Roe, AUSM (Advection Upstream Splitting Method) and AUSM+ up schemes were compared. The results showed AUSM+ up scheme is efficient. Then,...

Abstract
UF6 gas flow in the total regions of a rotor with the radius of 0.1 m and the length of 1 m in axisymmetric and steady states was simulated using a new hybrid CFD-DSMC method in the OpenFOAM framework. Implicit coupled density-based scheme was performed for CFD method, and Variable Hard Sphere (VHS) and diffuse model were employed in DSMC method. Also, as an initial estimation, the local Knudsen number was applied to determine the interface location between the continuum-rarefied regions (r = 0.0855 m). Then it was modified (r = 0.084 m) to reduce the computational cost. The comparison results of pure CFD and CFD-DSMC methods illustrated that there were large differences between the flow...

Fabrication and Modification of Nano-Filtration Membrane for Effective Removal of Pharmaceutical Pollutants from Water
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Musavi Soghondikolaei, Abbas (Supervisor) ; Bastani, Dariush (Supervisor) ; Molavi, Hossein (Co-Supervisor)
Abstract
In this research, the separation of tetracycline (TC) as a pharmaceutical pollutant from water using a nanofiltration membrane process was investigated. For this purpose, a set of polymer-based nanofiltration membranes containing various amounts of the metal-organic framework (MOF-808) which are stable in water, were prepared via the phase inversion method. Due to the hydrophobic nature of the polysulfone and its tendency to fouling in the membrane filtration process, MOF-808 particles were used as agents to enhance the hydrophilicity of the membrane surfaces. In order to achieve this goal, MOF-808 was synthesized via solvothermal method and activated using two different methods:...
Rcci Curvature for Metric-Measure Space via Optimal Transport
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Bahraini, Alireza (Supervisor) ; Ranjbar Motlagh, Alireza (Co-Advisor)
Abstract
One of the important questions in mathematics is generalized. In case of metric spaces, one of the questions is: Can we extend notions of Riemannian geometry to arbitrary metric spaces smoothly? Ricci curvature is one of the most important concepts in differential geometry. Ricci curvature is defined for the Riemannian manifold and has many applications in mathematics and physics like Einstein’s equation in relativity theory. There is a good notion for a metric space having “sectional curvature bounded below by K” or “sectional curvature bounded above by K”, due to Alexandrov. Can we define the concept of Ricci curvature in metric space? A motivation for this question comes from Gromov’s...

Abstract
Seismic design codes reduce loads by using response modification factor. Because of the reserved strength in structural elements and capacity of structure to dissipate energy, structures can be designed for lower seismic loads. This factor has modified over time. In this thesis, the effect of the reduction in behavior factor on the response of two kinds of reinforced concrete systems were evaluated. Moment resisting frames and dual systems with different heights and regularity in plan, heve been design according to the behavior factor which is recommended in the 3rd edition of the Iranian codes of practice for seismic resistance design of buildings (Standard No. 2800). Drift and...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Bahreini, Alireza (Supervisor)
Abstract
Poincare conjecture is one of the rst eorts for classifying 3-manifolds that was stated in the begining of 20th century. Eorts for proving this conjecture continued for about 100 years and nally Perelman has solved it in 2003. He has used Ricci ow which has been invented by Richard Hamilton in the early 80's. In this thesis rst we will introduce Ricci ow and will state the results before Perelman such as short time and long time existence of solution. Then we will mention some applications of Ricci ow and will state an explanation of the proof of uniformization and Calabi conjecture by Ricci ow. After that we start the main part of the thesis. In this part we will montion one of the...

Identification and Abnormal Condition Detection of a Cement Rotary Kiln
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Fatehi, Alireza (Supervisor)
Abstract
One of the most important parts of a cement factory is the cement rotary kiln which plays a key role in quality and quantity of produced cement. In this part, the physical exertion and bilateral movement of air and materials, together with chemical reactions take place. Thus, this system has immensely complex and nonlinear dynamic equations. These equations have not worked out yet. Only in exceptional case; however, a large number of the involved parameters were crossed out and an approximation model was presented instead. This issue caused many problems for designing a cement rotary kiln controller. In this thesis, we employed a nonlinear system identification method for identification,...
Entanglement and Decoherence in Optomechanical Systems Coupled through Photothermal Effects
, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology ; Bahrampour, Alireza (Supervisor)
Abstract
Optomechanical systems have attracted considerable attention in the last decade. Such a raising prominence is mainly due to its capability in providing new insight into the quantum behavior of macroscopic objects and exploring the interface between quantum and classical mechanics. Alongside this fundamental quest, cavity optomechanics has many other benefits, ranging from very precise measurements on forces and positions to quantum information processing. In this thesis, we investigate quantum properties of such systems. Particularly, we study cooling of the mechanical resonator toward its ground state and the entanglement between this mechanical resonator and the cavity field. Cooling the...
Improvement in Reinforced Concrete Beam-Column Connections Behaviour using FRP Sheets
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Khaloo, Alireza (Supervisor)
Abstract
Performance of reinforced concrete frames is highly dependent on detailing of the joint connections between its members, such as beams and columns. To have a good structural behavior, joints must show ductile behavior and designed based on the philosophy of strong column-weak beam. In the case of sever lacking ductility, strength or even rigidity of the connections, or having a weak column-strong beam, in the existing structures, there is a need for seismic upgrading of the connection. There are several ways for seismic upgrading of this type of connections. In the last decade Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) widely has been used to strengthening the reinforced concrete (RC) members. Most of...
Hodge Theory on Metric Spaces
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Bahraini, Alireza (Supervisor)
Abstract
Hodge theory is a beautiful synthesis of geometry, topology, and anal- ysis, which has been developed in the setting of Riemannian manifolds. On the other hand, spaces of images, which are important in the math- ematical foundations of vision and pattern recognition, do not fit this framework. This motivates us to develop a version of Hodge theory on metric spaces with a probability measure. We believe that this constitutes a step towards understanding the geometry of vision. We extend the theory of the Laplacian on domains of Euclidean space or on a manifold and next to metric space. Finally we give a beautiful application in web researcher engin.
