, Article International Journal of Operational Research ; Volume 30, Issue 1 , 2017 , Pages 142-150 ; 17457645 (ISSN) ; Jafari, H ; Ketabchi, S ; Sharif University of Technology
2017
Abstract
The main goal of this paper is to compute the solution to the NP-hard absolute value equations (AVEs) Ax - |x| = b when the singular values of A exceed 1. First we show the AVE is equivalent to a bilinear programming problem and then we present a system tantamount to this problem. We use the simulated annealing (SA) algorithm to solve this system. Finally, several examples are given to illustrate the implementation and efficiency of the proposed method. Copyright © 2017 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd

Abstract
This paper presents an experimental study on prediction of the early-age creep and shrinkage of concrete with and without silica fumes, trass, ground-granulated blast-furnace slag, combinations thereof, and influences of the proposed Iranian pozzolans. Experiments were carried out under a controlled ambient condition at a temperature of 40° C and a relative humidity (RH) of 50%, and a laboratory ambient condition at a temperature of 20° C and a relative humidity (RH) of 30% in order to collect the required data. Comparisons are made between ACI209-92, BS8110-1986 and CEB1970 prediction models, and an estimation model, based on 28-day results (short-term test method), using the same...
Inverse modelling for freshwater lens in small islands: Kish Island, Persian Gulf
, Article Hydrological Processes ; Volume 27, Issue 19 , 2013 , Pages 2759-2773 ; 08856087 (ISSN) ; Rajabi, M. M ; Ketabchi, H ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
A number of challenges including instability, nonconvergence, nonuniqueness, nonoptimality, and lack of a general guideline for inverse modelling have limited the application of automatic calibration by generic inversion codes in solving the saltwater intrusion problem in real-world cases. A systematic parameter selection procedure for the selection of a small number of independent parameters is applied to a real case of saltwater intrusion in a small island aquifer system in the semiarid region of the Persian Gulf. The methodology aims at reducing parameter nonuniqueness and uncertainty and the time spent on inverse modelling computations. Subsequent to the automatic calibration of the...
Evolutionary algorithms for the optimal management of coastal groundwater: A comparative study toward future challenges

Abstract
This paper surveys the literature associated with the application of evolutionary algorithms (EAs) in coastal groundwater management problems (CGMPs). This review demonstrates that previous studies were mostly relied on the application of limited and particular EAs, mainly genetic algorithm (GA) and its variants, to a number of specific problems. The exclusive investigation of these problems is often not the representation of the variety of feasible processes may be occurred in coastal aquifers. In this study, eight EAs are evaluated for CGMPs. The considered EAs are: GA, continuous ant colony optimization (CACO), particle swarm optimization (PSO), differential evolution (DE), artificial bee...

Abstract
This study presents a parallel evolutionary optimization approach to determine optimal management strategies of large-scale coastal groundwater problems. The population loops of evolutionary algorithms (EA) are parallelized using shared memory parallelism to address the high computational demands of such applications. This methodology is applied to solve the management problems in an aquifer system in Kish Island, Iran using a three-dimensional density-dependent groundwater numerical model. EAs of continuous ant colony optimization (CACO), particle swarm optimization, and genetic algorithm are utilized to solve the optimization problems. By implementing the parallelization strategy, a...

Abstract
Decision models are essential tools for coastal groundwater management (CGM). A combined simulation-optimization framework is employed to develop these models. One of the main barriers in the widespread application of these models for real-world cases is their large computational burden. Recent advances in efficient computational approaches and robust optimization methods can crack this barrier. This study surveys the scientific basis of CGM to provide an overview on this subject and reviews the-state-of-the-art to clarify recent developments and to outline ideas for improving the computational performance. Key details are presented on the performance and choice of possible robust tools such...
An Efficient Simulation-Optimization Model for Coastal Groundwater Management
, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology ; Ataie-Ashtiani, Behzad (Supervisor)
Abstract
Groundwater in coastal aquifers is one of the essential resources of freshwater in coastal regions, where are heavily populated or industrialized areas, and have critical ecosystems. The management of these resources is a priority to preserve groundwater from serious natural and human-induced threats such as salinization caused by seawater intrusion. The combined simulation-optimization techniques can be used for this purpose in determining optimal planning and management strategies. The implementation of such techniques for complex real-world and large -scale problems has major difficulties in terms of both computational efficiency (solution quality and required computational time) and...
User Profiling in Social Networks
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Sameti, Hossein (Supervisor)
Abstract
Due to the emergence of social networks in recent years and people’s usage of them for expressing their thoughts and emotions, there are lots of user data in these networks. The development of social networks has created a good opportunity for organizations and people to extract user profiles from social networks. Hence, user profiling has become an interesting problem for researchers. Predicting users’ occupational class is one of the main problems in this field. Most of the existing related works use only textual features of users, whereas users’ relations graph can give useful information about users. In this research, we propose a model based on Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) to predict...
Groundwater travel time computation for two-layer islands
, Article Hydrogeology Journal ; Volume 24, Issue 4 , 2016 , Pages 1045-1055 ; 14312174 (ISSN) ; Mahmoodzadeh, D ; Ataie Ashtiani, B ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
A closed-form analytical computation of groundwater travel time (GWTT) for two-layer oceanic small island aquifers is developed assuming steady-state and sharp-interface conditions. The two-layer geology impacts on the GWTT are investigated using the developed analytical solution to achieve a greater transparency of such conceptualizations. The results demonstrate that the inclusion of geologic layering leads to large changes in the GWTT. Sensitivity analyses, using specified dimensionless parameters, are employed to assess the influences of hydraulic conductivity, recharge rate, upper layer thickness, and seawater/freshwater density difference parameters, which influence the GWTT. These...
Sea-level rise impacts on seawater intrusion in coastal aquifers: review and integration
, Article Journal of Hydrology ; Volume 535 , 2016 , Pages 235-255 ; 00221694 (ISSN) ; Mahmoodzadeh, D ; Ataie Ashtiani, B ; Simmons, C. T ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
Sea-level rise (SLR) influences groundwater hydraulics and in particular seawater intrusion (SWI) in many coastal aquifers. The quantification of the combined and relative impacts of influential factors on SWI has not previously been considered in coastal aquifers. In the present study, a systematic review of the available literature on this topic is first provided. Then, the potential remaining challenges are scrutinized. Open questions on the effects of more realistic complexities such as gradual SLR, parameter uncertainties, and the associated influences in decision-making models are issues requiring further investigation. We assess and quantify the seawater toe location under the impacts...

Abstract
Forming limit diagrams (FLDs) are extensively used in industries, particularly the auto industry. The establishment of these diagrams using a predictive approach can lead to reduction in both cost and time. In the present work, Gurson-Tvergaard-Needleman (GTN), a porosity-based model, was used to predict the FLD of an interstitial-free steel via finite element simulation. Optimum values of the GTN model were obtained by applying a response surface methodology (RSM) based on central composite design. Results show that RSM is a good method for an appropriate determination of the GTN model parameters, such as initial void volume fraction, effective void volume fraction, critical void volume...

Abstract
The fresh groundwater lenses (FGLs) of small islands can be highly vulnerable to climate change impacts, including sea-level rise (SLR). Many real cases of atoll or sandy islands involve two-layer hydrogeological conceptualizations. In this paper, the influential factors that affect FGLs in two-layer small islands subject to SLR are investigated. An analytical solution describing FGLs in circular islands, composed of two geological layers, is developed for the simplified case of steady-state and sharp-interface conditions. An application of the developed model is demonstrated to estimate the FGL thickness of some real-world islands by comparison with existing FGL thickness data. Furthermore,...
Nonlinear interstory drift contours for idealized forward directivity pulses using "modified fish-bone" models

Abstract
Four 5-, 10-, 20- and 30-story moment frames, representing low-, mid-, and two high-rise structures, were subjected to a great number of idealized directivity pulses. The amplitudes and periods of pulses vary from 0.02 g to 1.0 g and 0.5 to 12 sec, respectively. Over 1400 nonlinear dynamic analyses of low- to high-rise moment frames were performed which were feasible through using modified fish-bone model. The distribution of interstory drift along the height was studied and two applied contours were proposed: (i) the maximum interstory drift contour, and (ii) the critical story contour. These contours were demonstrated versus the ratio of natural period of the structure to the pulse period...

Abstract
In this article singular points of a parallel manipulator are obtained based on a novel geometrical method. Here we introduce the constrained plain method (CPM) and some of its application in parallel mechanism. Given the definition of constraint plane (CP) and infinite constraint plane (ICP) the dependency conditions of constraints is achieved with the use of a new theorem based on the Ceva geometrical theorem. The direction of angular velocity of a body is achieved by having three ICPs with the use of another theorem. Finally, with the use of the above two novel theorems singularities of the 3UPF_PU mechanism are obtained. It should be emphasized that this method is completely geometrical,...
Melting enthalpy and entropy of freestanding metallic nanoparticles based on cohesive energy and average coordination number
, Article Journal of Physical Chemistry C ; Volume 115, Issue 35 , August , 2011 , Pages 17310-17313 ; 19327447 (ISSN) ; Delavari H., H ; Madaah Hosseini, H. R ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
An analytical model is proposed to study the effect of particle size on melting enthalpy and entropy of metallic nanoparticles (NPs). The Mott's and Regel's equations for melting entropy in the combination of core average coordination number (CAC) and surface average coordination number (SAC) of freestanding NPs are considered. Clusters of icosahedral (IC), body centered cubic (BCC), and body centered tetragonal (BCT) structure without any vacancies and defects are modeled. Using the variable coordination number made this model to be in good agreement with experimental and molecular dynamic (MD) results of different crystal structures. The model predicts melting entropy and enthalpy of...
On the temperature and residual stress field during grinding
, Article WCE 2010 - World Congress on Engineering 2010, 30 June 2010 through 2 July 2010 ; Volume 2 , 2010 , Pages 1196-1200 ; 9789881821072 (ISBN) ; Farrahi, G. H ; Ghadbeigi, H ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
Grinding is widely used for manufacturing of components that require fine surface finish and good dimensional accuracy. In this study a thermo-mechanical finite element analysis is conducted to find out how grinding parameters can affect temperature and residual stress distribution in the workpiece. Results of parametric study presented in this work indicate, by carefully selecting the grinding parameters, minimum thermal and mechanical damage can be achieved. Higher workpiece velocities produce higher surface residual stress. By increasing depths of cut, depth of tensile residual stresses increases. Convection heat coefficient does not have any considerable effect on surface residual stress...
A new lattic LP-based post filter for adaptive noise cancellers in mobile and vehicular applications
, Article Proceedings of the 8th IEEE International Symposium on Signal Processing and Information Technology, ISSPIT 2008, 16 December 2008 through 19 December 2008, Sarajevo ; 2008 , Pages 407-412 ; 9781424435555 (ISBN) ; Sameti, H ; Veisi, H ; Abutalebi, H. R ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
Adaptive Noise Cancellation (ANC) is a well-known technique for background noise reduction in automobile and vehicular environments. The noise fields in automobile and other vehicle interior obey the diffuse noise field model closely. On the other hand, the ANC does not provide sufficient noise reduction in the diffuse noise fields. In this paper, a new multistage post-filter is designed for ANC as a solution to diffuse noise conditions. The designed post-filter is a single channel Linear Prediction (LP) based speech enhancement system. The LP is performed by an adaptive lattice filter and attempts to extract speech components by using intermediate ANC signals. The post-filter has no...
Finite element analysis of shot-peening effect on fretting fatigue parameters
, Article Tribology International ; Volume 44, Issue 11 , 2011 , Pages 1583-1588 ; 0301679X (ISSN) ; Alvandi Tabrizi, Y ; Farrahi, G. H ; Majzoobi, G. H ; Ghadbeigi, H ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
Shot peening is widely used to improve the fretting fatigue strength of critical surfaces. Fretting fatigue occurs in contacting parts that are subjected to fluctuating loads and sliding movements at the same time. This paper presents a sequential finite element simulation to investigate the shot peening effects on normal stress, shear stress, bulk stress and slip amplitude, which are considered to be the controlling parameters of fretting damage. The results demonstrated that among the modifications related to shot peening, compressive residual stress has a dominant effect on the fretting parameters
Mechanically activated synthesis of single crystalline MgO nanostructures
, Article Journal of Alloys and Compounds ; Volume 506, Issue 2 , September , 2010 , Pages 715-720 ; 09258388 (ISSN) ; Yoozbashizadeh, H ; Askari, M ; Kobatake, H ; Fukuyama, H ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
One-dimensional (1D) MgO structures were successfully synthesized via carbothermic reduction of mechanically activated mixture of MgO and graphite. Mechanical activation of source materials before carbothermic reduction can substantially enhance the formation of MgO products at a temperature (1000 °C) relatively lower than that required in previous approaches (≥1200 °C). However, the morphology of MgO formed is dependent on the degree of mechanical activation and the condition of the subsequent carbothermic reduction. Two distinctive morphologies were found for MgO products synthesized using our method: single crystalline nanorods with rectangular cross-sections whose diameters range from 50...

Abstract
Attitude and vibration control of a general form of flexible satellites is addressed in this paper. Partial differential dynamic equations are derived considering new details such as multi sectioned solar panels and elastic connections between main hub and solar panels. Boundary control approach is adopted to eliminate simplification errors of discrete models, using just one actuator in the hub. Asymptotic stability of attitude dynamics is proved for a group of boundary controllers and necessary conditions for asymptotic stability of vibrations are discussed. Being independent of modeling accuracy and using easily measurable feedbacks are among advantages of the proposed class of...
