Abstract
The influence of deep cryogenic treatment on wear resistance and tool life of M2 HSS drills in high-speed dry drilling configuration of carbon steels was studied. The experimental results indicated 77 and 126% improvement in cryogenic-treated and cryogenic- and temper-treated drill lives, respectively. The results of wear rate test were in agreement with drill life test. Chemical composition of chips were also reported to show the onset of seizure in drilling test and the consequence of seizure in promoting dissolution wear by diffusion mechanism. Wear resistance improvement was mainly attributed to the resistance of cryogenically treated drills against diffusion wear mechanism, due to the...
Effect of Zr addition on the aging behavior of A319 aluminum cast alloy
, Article Scripta Materialia ; Volume 52, Issue 4 , 2005 , Pages 253-257 ; 13596462 (ISSN) ; Mahmudi, R ; Khomamizadeh, F ; Sharif University of Technology
2005
Abstract
The structure, age hardening response, precipitate type and hardness of A319 cast aluminum alloy without and with zirconium addition were investigated. The as-solutionized and artificially-aged hardness values were higher for the Zr-containing alloy. This is believed to be a consequence of the precipitation of Al3Zr particles produced during sufficiently long solutionizing treatments. © 2004 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Abstract
This paper focuses on the effects of low temperature (subzero) treatments on microstructure and mechanical properties of H13 hot work tool steel. Cryogenic treatment at -72 °C and deep cryogenic treatment at -196 °C were applied and it was found that by applying the subzero treatments, the retained austenite was transformed to martensite. As the temperature was decreased more retained austenite was transformed to martensite and it also led to smaller and more uniform martensite laths distributed in the microstructure. The deep cryogenic treatment also resulted in precipitation of more uniform and very fine carbide particles. The microstructural modification resulted in a significant...
The effect of different rare earth elements content on microstructure, mechanical and wear behavior of Mg-Al-Zn alloy

Abstract
The effect of Rare earths addition to AZ91 magnesium alloy and its influence on the microstructure and mechanical properties was investigated in this study. Addition of cerium rich misch metal to AZ91 alloy resulted in formation of needle shape particles, which had a very high thermal stability, providing superior mechanical properties compared to AZ91 magnesium alloy. As a result, the grain boundaries were less susceptible for grain boundary sliding at high temperatures. The steady state creep rates were specified and for the AZ91 alloy and the results indicate a mixed mode of creep behavior, with some grain boundary effects contributing to the overall behavior. However for the RE added...
The effect of different content of Al, RE and Si element on the microstructure, mechanical and creep properties of Mg-Al alloys
, Article Materials Science and Engineering A ; Volume 523, Issue 1-2 , 2009 , Pages 1-6 ; 09215093 (ISSN) ; Tari, A ; Khomamizadeh, F ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
The effect of Al content and Si addition on the microstructural and creep properties of Mg-Al-RE alloys was investigated in this study. The steady state creep rates were specified and it was found that the creep behavior of the alloy, which is dependent on the stability of the near grain boundary microstructure, was improved by the RE and Si addition. For the AZ91 alloy, the results indicate a mixed mode of creep behavior, with some grain boundary effects contributing to the overall behavior. However for the RE and Si added samples, sliding of grain boundaries was greatly suppressed and the dislocation climb controlled creep was the dominant deformation mechanism. Analysis of creep rates...
Effect of deep cryogenic treatment on microstructure, creep and wear behaviors of AZ91 magnesium alloy
, Article Materials Science and Engineering A ; Volume 523, Issue 1-2 , 2009 , Pages 27-31 ; 09215093 (ISSN) ; Tari, A ; Khomamizadeh, F ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
This paper focuses on the effect of deep cryogenic treatment (-196 °C) on microstructure and mechanical properties of AZ91 magnesium alloy. The execution of deep cryogenic treatment on samples changed the distribution of β precipitates. The tiny laminar β particles almost dissolved in the microstructure and the coarse divorced eutectic β phase penetrated into the matrix. This microstructural modification resulted in a significant improvement on mechanical properties of the alloy. The steady state creep rates were measured and it was found that the creep behavior of the alloy, which is dependent on the stability of the near grain boundary microstructure, was improved by the deep cryogenic...
Template-based growth of titanium dioxide nanorods by a particulate sol-electrophoretic deposition process
, Article Particuology ; Volume 9, Issue 2 , 2011 , Pages 161-169 ; 16742001 (ISSN) ; Ordikhani, F ; Fray, D. J ; Khomamizadeh, F ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
TiO2 nanorods have been successfully grown into a track-etched polycarbonate (PC) membrane by a particulate sol-electrophoretic deposition from an aqueous medium. The prepared sols had a narrow particle size distribution around 17 nm and excellent stability against aging, with zeta potentials in the range of 47-50 mV at pH 2. It was found that TiO2 nanorods were grown from dilute aqueous sol with a low, 0.1-M concentration. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) analysis confirmed that a full conversion of titanium isopropoxide was obtained by hydrolysis, resulting in the formation of TiO2 particles. X-ray diffraction (XRD) results revealed that TiO2 nanorods dried at 100 °C were a...
Effect of predeformation and heat treatment conditions in the SIMA process on microstructural and mechanical properties of A319 aluminum alloy
, Article Journal of Alloys and Compounds ; Volume 468, Issue 1-2 , 2009 , Pages 130-135 ; 09258388 (ISSN) ; Khalifehzadeh, R ; Keyvan, H ; Khomamizadeh, F ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
In this study the influences of predeformation and heat treatment conditions on stress-induced melt activating process (SIMA) of A319 aluminum alloy were investigated. At 30% of predeformation a dominant globular structure of grains was obtained. However, further increasing of the predeformation rate considerably reduced the shape factor. The holding time of 10-15 min at semi-solid temperature of 580 °C was suggested in order to prevent grain growth. Coarsening of the grains by excess time or temperature of heat treatment reduced the tensile strength of the alloy. © 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved

Abstract
The objective of this work was to gain a quantitative and qualitative understanding of the degree to which porosity influences thermal-fatigue performance and other mechanical properties of A319 aluminum casting alloy over ranges of commercial interest. The number of cycles to failure for each test was recorded. An increase in porosity content caused degradation in thermal-fatigue life and other mechanical properties. The fractographic examinations identified the pores and some intermetallics as the key microstructural features which promote damage and thermal-fatigue crack initiation sites in the specimens. Crack initiation and propagation is expected to occur sooner in regions of higher...

Abstract
In this investigation, the effect of microstructural constituents on thermal fatigue resistance of A319 aluminum casting alloy was studied. For this purpose, both thermo-mechanical fatigue and thermal-shock fatigue experiments were performed in thermal cycling range between 40 and 250 °C. Following the results, samples with finer SDAS, lower porosity volume fraction and lower brittle intermetallic contents, as well as higher Si modification showed better thermal fatigue resistance. Moreover, T6 and T7 heat treatments appeared to be highly beneficial for thermal fatigue performance. According to the fractography analysis, porosities and coarse intermetallic phases were determined as the most...

Abstract
In this work, effective parameters of SIMA process to obtain non dendritic microstructure in A356 alloy were investigated. In addition, the effect of SIMA process on the evolution of morphology of silicon and intermetallic phases in this alloy was studied. Microstructure images obtained from optical microscopy and SEM observation showed that increase in plastic work up to 40% and then holding of samples in the semi solid state at temperature of 580°C, causes that primary dendritic structure changes to non dendritic, fine and globular structure, but optimum reheating time completely depended on initial thickness of samples. If all parameters of SIMA process are the same, the grain boundaries...

Abstract
In this paper, the effect of morphology, size and volume fraction of the most important microstructural constituents of cast A356 aluminum alloy on its main mechanical properties has been studied. The investigated variables consist of Dendrite Arm Spacing (DAS) of α aluminum phases, spheroicity of silicon particles in eutectic areas and 2-D micro porosity areas. The variations of Quality Index (Qi) with DAS and spheroicity of eutectic silicon particles follow a linear relationship. For the micro-porosity area of a polished section of the studied samples, two linear relationships were found, one for values less than 1.25% and another for higher values. As the basis for a quantitative analysis...

Abstract
The present article focuses on the high-temperature mechanical properties of the magnesium alloy AZ91. The addition of rare-earth (RE) elements up to 2 wt pct improves both yield and tensile strengths at 140 °C by replacing the Mg17Al12 phase with RE-containing intermetallic compounds. This intermetallic phase is thermally and metallurgically stable and is expected to boost the grain-boundary strengthening. It also increases the resistance of grain boundaries to flow at high temperatures. Further increases of RE additions reduce strength and ductility due to growth of the Al11RE3 brittle phase, which has sharp edges. Still, at a 3 wt pct RE addition, the strength of the alloy at high...
Investigation on the Effect of Concentration Ratio of Iron Cations on the Formation of Carbon Nanotubes Synthezied via arc Discharge in Aqueous Solution
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Simchi, Abdolreza (Supervisor) ; Khomamizadeh, Farzad (Supervisor)
Abstract
In this work, multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) were synthesized in an aqueous solution of iron chloride and solfate via arc discharge. Thermogravimetric (TG) analysis showed that the multi layer structures including carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and multi-shell graphite particles were formed when DI-water was used. SWCNTs were synthezied in the presence of the iron ions. The effect of [Fe3+]/[Fe2+] ratio on the CNTs yield were investigated. Raman spectroscopy investigations showed that the highest yield was obtained when the ferric to ferro ratio was one. When the concentration of Fe3+ ion was higher than that of Fe2+, many short tubes were...

Abstract
Due to environmental concerns traditional eutectic tin-lead solder is gradually being replaced in electronic assemblies by "lead-free" solders. During this transition, nanoparticle technology is also being investigated to see whether improvements in joint reliability for high temperature applications can be made. Nanoparticles can be used to harden the solder via Zener pinning of the grain boundaries and reduce fatigue failure. This paper explores the effects of adding Silica nanoparticles to SnAgCu solder, and how the mechanical properties induced in the solder vary with temperature. It is found that above 100°C the mechanical response and microstructure of the normal and nanoparticle...

Abstract
Recent studies have indicated that one-dimensional titanium dioxide (TiO2) shows excellent properties in comparison to other forms of TiO2 materials in photocatalysis, sensing, self-cleaning coating and photovoltaic applications. In this project TiO2 nanorods were grown in polycarbonate template, with pore diameter of 200 nm, by solelectrophoretic deposition method. Firstly, properties of TiO2 sol were investigated. The average particle size of TiO2 (measured by zeta sizer instrument) was 17 nm and the zeta potential was around 45 mV, which confirmed good stability of the sol against aging. Moreover, FTIR analysis showed that a full conversion of precursor (titanium isopropoxide) was...

Abstract
The use of nanoparticles to control grain size and mechanical properties of solder alloys at high homologous temperature is explored. It is found that silica nanoparticles in the 100 nm range coated with 2 nm to 3 nm of gold can be dispersed within solders during the normal reflow soldering process, and that these particles are effective in hardening the solder and restricting dynamic grain growth during compression testing at low homologous temperature. As the homologous temperature increases towards 0.75, the effects of the nanoparticles on both mechanical properties and dynamical grain growth reduce, and by homologous temperatures of 0.86 the effects have completely disappeared. This...

Abstract
Comparison of the traditional linear heating method of TPD with an original stepwise heating scheme was reported for the first time. Stepwise heating TPD was carried out by keeping the temperature constant as soon as ammonia desorption signal rises until the signal returns to the baseline. More ammonia desorption peaks on a SAPO-34 catalyst were identified using TPD with stepwise heating. The effect of temperature ramp on desorption peak broadening in TPD curve was also addressed. The more distinct ammonia desorption peaks in stepwise TPD indicates that ammonia adsorbs in about five or six different ways on SAPO-34, and attribution of different adsorptions may be explained considering some...
