Abstract
Effect of different conditions on shear behaviour of rock has been investigated by various researchers. As known, in larger scale the continuity of the rock material is interrupted by separated planes such as bedding planes, faults, shear zones, closure and the behaviour converts to be inelastic and anisotropic. Generally, discontinuities appear repeatedly in more than one preferential direction, creating a three dimensional structure, reducing its stiffness and shear strength as mechanical effects and increasing its transport velocity associated with discontinuity flow as hydraulic effects. They also make rock behavior more complex and different compared to the behavior of soil. According...

Abstract
This study attempts to present a new and comprehensive cycle for the design of fixed wing micro air vehicles. The idea is to propose a complete cycle containing all micro air vehicles design subjects such as aerodynamics, stability, structure, and navigation. The main aim of the cycle is to decrease the designing time for an optimum design. In this method, the sizing process is started simultaneously, which involves the following cases: specification of mission and aviation plan; determination of planform and aspect ratio; constraint analysis; estimation of plane weight. Completion of these four phases results in the specification of the geometry and dimensions of the wing in an optimum...

Abstract
In this letter, array null steering is formulated as a sparse recovery problem. In addition, a novel null steering scheme for large arrays by perturbing only a few elements is presented. To achieve this goal, compressed sensing (CS) is used to exploit the sparsity of the perturbed elements. The advantages of the proposed scheme are a significant reduction in hardware cost and lower power consumption, as well as less aging of the elements and faster response. Simulation results show that the CS-based method could be efficiently used to generate wide nulls using at least two elements. The interference rejection ratio achieved by the proposed method is 10-20 dB better than the existing...

Abstract
Here, nadir echo suppression (NES) in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellites is studied in detail. Moreover, advantages of suppressing the nadir echo in space domain, by beamforming, rather than in time domain, which imposes stringent restrictions on radar timing, are addressed. Performing NES in time domain restricts the swath width, as well as the selection of the pulse repetition frequency (PRF). It is shown that the spatial NES could increase the swath width by ∼25%. It also increases the freedom in PRF selection, which is useful in multiple-swath imaging modes and high-resolution wide-swath satellites. Furthermore, it is useful in confining the operating PRF range of SAR satellites,...

Abstract
In order to produce a thick near equi-atomic NiTi intermetallic layer on the surface of titanium plate, layers of nickel with thicknesses of 30 μm and 60 μm were electroplated on commercial pure (Cp) titanium and subsequently were heat treated at 850°C and 900°C. The effects of heat treating temperature and the thickness of electroplated nickel on the evolution of the microstructure and mechanical properties were studied. The results confirm the formation of various intermetallic layers in the coatings that substantially affect their hardness. The optimum condition for the formation of a thick NiTi intermetallic layer on the outer surface of the titanium was diffusion treatment of the sample...

Abstract
Transmission line congestion in electricity market is lead to increase the energy cost and change in local marginal prices. So, it is probable that the market power is manifested. Market power may prevent the full competition in Electricity Market. Moreover, in this condition, with operating of power system in its boundary conditions, the system may be damaged and the security of the system may be disturbed. On the other hand, decreasing the line flows from their optimal value, cost and consequently, price of energy are increased. So, there is need to have a compromise between the line flow decrease and the cost those impose. In this paper, a framework for compromising between social cost...

Abstract
In this paper, the problem of designing waveform for MIMO-SAR systems is investigated. The family of modified Costas pulses (MCP) are used because of their advantages. However, a MIMO-SAR system will not be beneficial unless the waveforms transmitted through different antennas are orthogonal, even under different delay/Doppler shifts. An iterative algorithm is proposed that finds a set of MCPs and guarantees that the maximum cross-correlation (under different Doppler/delay shifts) among different waveforms is below a threshold. Simulation results show that the proposed waveform design outperforms the conventional one in terms of orthogonality, resolution, and signal-Tointerference-plus-noise...

Abstract
Given the increasing need for the creation and development of automated systems, the problem of detecting and identifying the faces of people in the images has been considered by the researchers. In recent years, the sparse representation based classification has been of great interest to researchers. The goal of this investigation is to provide a quick and effective way to identify faces based on the sparse representation. Since the basis of sparse representation is to calculate it through L1-norm optimization for high dimensional dictionary with high computational volume, a smoothed L0-norm optimization-based method was introduced. At the time of obtaining the sparse representation using...

Abstract
This paper proposes an efficient concurrent error detection method using control flow checking for embedded processors. The proposed method is based on the co-operation of two hardware modules: 1) an on-chip hardware component to detect branch instructions and generate signatures for the running program, and 2) an external watchdog processor to compare runtime signatures and branch addresses with the information extracted offline. The proposed method is implemented on an embedded processor core and is evaluated by a simulation based statistical fault injection approach where faults are injected into cache and main memory. Experimental results show that the proposed method detects more than...
Water film rupture in blocked oil recovery by gas injection: experimental and modeling study

Abstract
Water shielding phenomenon generally occurs after waterflooding in water-wet rocks, and impedes direct contact between the oil and the injected gas in tertiary gas injection processes. In this work, a set of visualization experiments were performed on micromodel patterns including designed dead-end pores with a film of water on the surface of pore bodies, which is a more realistic representation of porous media. The experiments were conducted at different miscibility conditions, and the required time for water to be displaced from the throat by the swelling of oil was measured for first contact miscible (n-C5/CO2) and immiscible (n-C10/CO2) systems. In the next step, a model was proposed to...

Abstract
We have used the Maxwell-Stefan diffusion theory to model the mass transfer between tertiary-injected gas and residual oil blocked by water, in order to predict the time required for the rupture of the water barrier due to oil swelling. We have also designed and conducted a set of visualization micromodel experiments on various pure and multicomponent oil-gas systems to measure the water rupture time in tertiary gas injection processes. The experimental results show that the initial pressure and dimensions of the system, the oil and gas composition, and the gas solubility in water control the oil swelling process. The experimentally measured rupture times are then employed to evaluate the...

Abstract
With the development of science and technology through social networks, the process of diffusion has become a controversial subject. In social networks, the process of diffusion is transmitted from one individual to another. The influence maximization problem, in which at least k nodes are chosen as the initial nodes of the spreader in the smallest amount of time, is one of the most critical aspects of the diffusion process. Furthermore, the initial nodes in the social network should generate the most influence on the other nodes in the network. However, in the algorithms proposed to solve the problem of influence maximization, the real-world factors which affect the influence probability in...
A more accurate prediction of liquid evaporation flux

Abstract
In this work, a more accurate prediction of liquid evaporation flux has been achieved. The statistical rate theory approach, which is recently introduced by Ward and Fang and exact estimation of vapor pressure in the layer adjacent to the liquid-vapor interface have been used for prediction of this flux. Firstly, the existence of an equilibrium layer adjacent to the liquid-vapor interface is considered and the vapor pressure in this layer and its thickness calculated. Subsequently, by using the Fick's second law, an appropriate vapor pressure expression for the pressure of equilibrium layer is derived and by this expression and the statistical rate theory approach, evaporation flux is...
Assessing the shear behavior of oriented rock joints under constant normal loading conditions
, Article Geotechnical Special Publication ; February , 2014 , p. 553-562 ; Khosravi, M ; Sadaghiani, M. H ; Meehan, C. L ; Amini, E ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
This paper presents results from a series of constant normal load direct shear tests on artificially created rock joints, in an attempt to quantify the effects of different factors that contribute to the shear strength along "ideal" rock joints. Particular focus is given to the effect of asperity orientation with respect to the direction of shearing. In many historical rock joint shear strength criteria, the effect of a joint's roughness on the joint shear strength is described based on analysis of only a single profile in the direction of shearing. More recent studies have observed that the distribution of sheared area on a joint surface during shear is significantly affected by the...

Abstract
We investigate the parallel partially cooperative relay broadcast channel with unmatched degraded subchannels. We characterize the capacity region of this channel in the general setting that, transmitter sends a common message for both users and a private message for each of them. Our achievability result is based on the choosing appropriate parameters for the general achievable rate region of partially cooperative relay broadcast channel. We provide a converse proof for this achievable region as well, which establishes the capacity region.© 2009 IEEE

Abstract
This letter investigates the deterministic design of pilot power and pattern for sparse channel estimation in OFDM systems based on minimizing the coherence of the DFT sub-matrix. It has been suggested that the pilot pattern forming a cyclic difference set (CDS) or almost difference set (ADS) is optimal. So, we proposed a deterministic procedure that jointly optimized for pattern and power of pilots as a solution. First, pilot patterns forming CDS/ADS were gathered through a search. Then, the power was numerically allocated to the different pilots from all the patterns. Finally, the pilot pattern and power pair leading to minimum coherence was selected from the available pairs. Simulation...

Abstract
In this paper, the problem of finding the shortest path between two points in the presence of single-point visibility constraints is studied, In these types of constraint, there should be at least one point on the output path from which a fixed viewpoint is visible. The problem is studied in various domains, including simple polygons, polygonal domains and polyhedral surfaces. The method is based on partitioning the boundary of the visibility region of the viewpoint into a number of intervals. This is done from the combinatorial structure of the shortest paths from the source and destination to the points on the boundary. The result for the case of simple polygons is optimal with O(n) time...
Query-point visibility constrained shortest paths in simple polygons
, Article Theoretical Computer Science ; Volume 389, Issue 1-2 , 2007 , Pages 1-11 ; 03043975 (ISSN) ; Ghodsi, M ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
In this paper, we study the problem of finding the shortest path between two points inside a simple polygon such that there is at least one point on the path from which a query point is visible. We provide an algorithm which preprocesses the input in O (n2 + n K) time and space and provides logarithmic query time. The input polygon has n vertices and K is a parameter dependent on the input polygon which is O (n2) in the worst case but is much smaller for most polygons. The preprocessing algorithm sweeps an angular interval around every reflex vertex of the polygon to store the optimal contact points between the shortest paths and the windows separating the visibility polygons of the query...
