The Effect of Thyroid Hormones on The Viscoelastic Behavior of Red Blood Cells

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Laktarash, Shaghayegh (Author) ; Seyed Reihani, Nader (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Blood is one of the most important fluids in the human body, consisting of three parts: red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. The mechanical properties of red blood cells are important in many diseases. The study of viscosity and other mechanical properties of red blood cells in recent years has attracted the attention of scientists in this field. The mechanical properties of red blood cells are related to the outer membrane and its cytoskeleton, and the study of these components can predict the behavior of red blood cells in diseases. The thyroid gland is located in front of the neck and secretes hormones that control many chemical processes in different parts of the body....

A Simultaneous Approach for Activity Type and Activity Duration of Disabled People

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hajivosough, Shaghayegh Sadat (Author) ; Samimi, Amir (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Daily activity patterns that include type and duration of activities are modeled simultaneously in MDCEV models. Conventionally, however, a diverse range of econometric models are used to sequentially model the decisions. Focusing on the disabled individuals, we aimed at comparing the prediction power of the two methods. A three level Nested Logit along with a Hazard model represent the sequential approach, the performance of which is compared to the MDCEV method. A random forest model is applied during the activity type prediction by MDCEV model. With considering 6.35 percent error in random forest model, the results confirmed that simultaneous approach improves activity type prediction by...

Predictive Cordon Pricing to Reduce Air Pollution

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Vosough, Shaghayegh Sadat (Author) ; Poorzahedy, Hossain (Supervisor) ; Lindsey, Robin (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
Traffic is a major contributor to emissions in many large cities with severe air pollution. Experience in London, Milan, and Stockholm shows that charging for the use of roads can be effective in reducing emissions, as well as congestion. This study examines the use of predictive cordon tolls based on weather forecasts to reduce ambient air pollution and congestion. Travelers choose their destinations inside or outside the cordon, and whether to drive or take public transport. Passenger vehicles are divided into three classes according to their emission characteristics, and higher tolls are imposed on more polluting vehicles. The Box model of emission dispersion is used to predict air...

An Investigation into the Optoelectrical Properties of the Composite of Aluminum Titanate (Al₂TiO₅)

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Omrani, Radman (Author) ; Madaah Hosseini, Hamid Reza (Supervisor) ; Shabani, Shaghayegh (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Aluminum titanate, also known as tialite (Al2TiO5), has traditionally been used in refractory industries due to its unique thermal properties such as its unique coefficient of thermal expansion and stability at high temperatures. However, its anisotropic crystal structure and its capacity to introduce lattice defects such as oxygen vacancies have made this material an emerging option in the fields of optoelectronics and semiconductors. In this study, the Al2TiO5/Al2O3/TiO2 composite was synthesized using a spark plasma sintering method at a temperature of 1773 K. Optical analyses using reflectance and photoluminescence spectroscopy showed that the energy gap of the synthesized sample was...
