    Modeling the R-curve effects in laminate composites using the interface thick level set method

    Abstract
    This paper presents a new model for simulating delamination growth in composites in presence of the resistance curve (R-curve) effects. This model is extended from the interface thick level set (ITLS) method which is developed recently. In this approach the common definition of damage in the constitutive relationship of the interface elements is replaced with a new damage definition based on the thick level set (TLS) method. This new damage definition provides a direct link between fracture and damage mechanics that allows use of interface elements without a predefined cohesive law.     Abstract
    This paper presents a new discontinuous damage model based on the interface thick level set method for modeling the fiber bridging effects on fatigue delaminaton propagation in composites. To incorporate the bridging effects under fatigue loading a modified Paris relation proposed in Yao (Compos Struct 176:556–564, 2017) is employed in developed model. This requires to define the fracture energy as a function of the crack length which is computed using the level set method.     Abstract
    A spinning disk reactor (SDR) was applied and tested successfully for precipitated calcium carbonate particles synthesis in liquid–liquid system which is poorly understood in literature. The proposed SDR reactor consists of a spinning disk rotating at 4000–16,000 rpm. The proposed SDR resulted in a high local supersaturation ratio due to the intense energy dissipation produced by a high-speed spinning disk. The higher rotational speed of SDR produces calcium carbonate nanoparticles with smaller mean particle sizes and higher aragonite content.     Mononuclear nonheme iron containing systems are versatile and vital oxidants of substrate hydroxylation reactions in many biosystems, whereby the rate constant of hydroxylation correlates with the strength of the C-H bond that is broken in the process. The thermodynamic reason behind these correlations, however, has never been established.     A new magnetic, catalytic nanocomposite of Hal-MT-Cys-Ag/MNCD was fabricated and utilized for catalyzing reductive de-colorization of methyl orange and rhodamin B in aqueous media at room temperature. To prepare this material, Cl-functionalized halloysite nanoclay was successively reacted with melamine and 2,4,6-trichloro-1,3,5-triazine to furnish multi-nitrogen containing ligand on halloysite surface. Then, magnetic carbon dots were crafted through a facile method and decorated with Ag nanoparticles and cysteine to furnish Cys-Ag/MNCD species.     The present study examines the effects of participation in a critical reflective online course upon the participants’ identity. The study drew upon both qualitative and quantitative research methodologies. The 38 participants of the study who were first degree students at Sharif University of Technology participated in ten online sessions in which ten prompts concerning intercultural issues were introduced. The data collected in the online course underwent inductive qualitative content analysis which resulted in the extraction of five themes.     Abstract
    Many mobile applications running on smartphones and wear- able devices would potentially benefit from the accuracy and scalability of deep CNN-based machine learning algorithms. However, performance and energy consumption limitations make the execution of such computationally intensive algorithms on mobile devices prohibitive. We present a GPU- accelerated library, dubbed CNNdroid [1], for execution of trained deep CNNs on Android-based mobile devices. Empirical evaluations show that CNNdroid achieves up to 60X speedup and 130X energy saving on current mobile devices.     Abstract
    In this work we present results of density functional theory (DFT) calculations on dicopper patellamides and their affinity for molecular oxygen and carbonate. Patellamides are cyclic octapeptides that are produced by a cyanobacterium, and may show promise as therapeutics. Thus, carbonate binding to a dicopper patellamide center gives a stable cyclic octapeptide with a twist of almost 90°. The system exists in close-lying open-shell singlet and triplet spin states with two unpaired electrons in orthogonal σ* orbitals on each metal center. The grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC), molecular dynamics (MD), and density functional theory (DFT) were used for this study's goal. GCMC was used to calculate adsorption isotherms, selectivity, and isosteric heats. MD was used to calculate the radial distribution function (RDF) and diffusion.     Catalytic studies were performed to develop a simple oxidation system for olefins and sulfides using manganese(III)-tridentate Schiff base complex, Mn(N-OPh-sal)(acac)(EtOH) (N-HOPh-Hsal = N-hydroxyphenyl-salicyldienamine, Hacac = acetylacetone), and urea-hydrogen peroxide (UHP) as terminal oxidant. Conversions up to 90% for olefins at 0 °C and 96% for sulfides at room temperature as well as sulfoxide selectivity up to 73% were achieved in short reaction times. Also this study confirms the accelerating effect of strong π-donor axial ligands such as imidazole (ImH) on the oxidation reactions. © 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved

    A type II (eoe: extraordinary-ordinary-extraordinary) phase matching condition in a 2nd Harmonic Generation of Nd-YAG laser under a high electric field in a uniaxial KDP crystal has been measured. Type II phase matching takes place when the two mixing waves are of orthogonal polarizations (extraordinary-ordinary) and the 2nd harmonic radiation corresponds to an extraordinary wave.     In this study, the traffic parameters were collected from three work zones in Iran in order to evaluate the queue length in the work zones. The work zones were observed at peak and non-peak hours. The results showed that abrupt changes in Freeway Free Speed (FFS) and arrival flow rate caused shockwaves and created a bot-tleneck in that section of the freeway. In addition, accel-eration reduction, abrupt change in the shockwave speed, abrupt change in the arrival flow rate and increase in the percentage of heavy vehicles have led to extreme queue lengths and delay.     Abstract
    Three different spinel metal oxide catalytic systems including NiFe2O4, CuFe2O4 and CoFe2O4 were synthesized using co-precipitation technique and their catalytic activities were compared to each other in α-arylation of oxindole derivatives under the optimized reaction conditions. Both nickel ferrite and copper ferrite magnetic nanoparticles show approximately the same behavior in these reactions but cobalt ferrite ones indicate slightly different properties and were not as good as the other two catalysts. These superparamagnetic catalysts allowed that α-arylation of different types of oxindoles will occur in high yields under mild conditions and at very short times

    Abstract
    A new efficient catalytic system was investigated for the epoxidation of various olefins by cis-dioxo-bis[2-(2′-hydroxyphenyl)-oxazolinato]molybdenum(VI), cis-[MoO2(phox)2], and TBHP as oxidizing agent. Using this system as catalyst for the oxidation of aliphatic substrates at 80 °C gives the epoxide as the sole product with yields up to 100% and turnover frequency up to 5000 h-1. The efficiency of the catalyst is strongly influenced by the nature of solvent, reaction time and temperature, and a significant increase in the epoxide yields is observed in higher temperatures and longer reaction times. © 2009 Elsevier B.V
