Abstract
Transferring large models in federated learning (FL) networks is often hindered by clients' limited bandwidth. We propose $ extsf {FedAA}$ , an FL algorithm which achieves fast convergence by exploiting the regularized Anderson acceleration (AA) on the global level. First, we demonstrate that FL can benefit from acceleration methods in numerical analysis. Second, $ extsf {FedAA}$ improves the convergence rate for quadratic losses and improves the empirical performance for smooth and strongly convex objectives, compared to FedAvg, an FL algorithm using gradient descent (GD) local updates. Experimental results demonstrate that employing AA can significantly improve the performance of FedAvg,...

Abstract
There are inadvertent errors in the y axis label of Figs. 2(b) and 6 as well as in the first paragraph of Sec. IV B. The y axis labels typed are ϵg (electron volts) and ϵ b (electron volts) in Figs. 2(b) and 6, respectively, instead of ϵg - ϵF (electron volts) and ϵb - ϵF (electron volts). Also, the term ω ≈ [ϵg - ϵF] in the first paragraph of Sec. IV B should be ω ≈ [ϵg - ϵb]. These errors do not alter other results, discussion, and conclusion of the manuscript. © 2019 Published under license by AIP Publishing

Abstract
Siligraphene belonging to the family of two-dimensional (2D) materials has great potential in optoelectronics due to its considerable excitonic effects. In this study, the strain effects on the electronic structure and the real-space exciton wave functions of g - SiC 7 are investigated using the first-principles calculations based on the ab initio many-body perturbation theory. Alongside the increase (decrease) of the bandgap with compressive (tensile) strain, our results show that the exciton in the siligraphene monolayer under in-plane biaxial compressive strains is much more localized than that in the case of tensile one, leading to the higher and lower exciton binding energies,...
Cooperative cyclostationary spectrum sensing in cognitive radios at low SNR regimes
, Article IEEE International Conference on Communications, 23 May 2010 through 27 May 2010, Cape Town ; 2010 ; 05361486 (ISSN) ; 9781424464043 (ISBN) ; Nasiri Kenari, M ; Le Ngoc, T ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
The paper proposes efficient cooperative cyclostationary spectrum sensing schemes in which each secondary user (SU) performs single-cycle cyclostationary detection for fast and simple implementation, while collaboration between SUs in final decision on the presence or absence of the primary user (PU) is explored to improve its performance. As the SUs simultaneously measure the spectral correlation functions at different cycle frequencies (CF) and exchange their information regarding the measured results, a sufficient number of CFs are effectively examined in a short period of time because of parallel searching, which makes the proposed cooperative spectrum sensing more reliable and faster....
The economic design of multivariate binomial EWMA VSSI control charts
, Article Journal of Applied Statistics ; Volume 40, Issue 6 , Apr , 2013 , Pages 1301-1318 ; 02664763 (ISSN) ; Jahani, P ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
Since multi-attribute control charts have received little attention compared with multivariate variable control charts, this research is concerned with developing a new methodology to employ the multivariate exponentially weighted moving average (MEWMA) charts for m-attribute binomial processes; the attributes being the number of nonconforming items. Moreover, since the variable sample size and sampling interval (VSSI) MEWMA charts detect small process mean shifts faster than the traditional MEWMA, an economic design of the VSSI MEWMA chart is proposed to obtain the optimum design parameters of the chart. The sample size, the sampling interval, and the warning/action limit coefficients are...

Abstract
Plasma medicine, or the biomedical application of cold atmospheric plasma (CAP), is an expanding field within plasma research. CAP has demonstrated remarkable versatility in diverse biological applications, including cancer treatment, wound healing, microorganism inactivation, and skin disease therapy. However, the precise mechanisms underlying the effects of CAP remain incompletely understood. The therapeutic effects of CAP are largely attributed to the generation of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS), which play a crucial role in the biological responses induced by CAP. Specifically, RONS produced during CAP treatment have the ability to chemically modify cell membranes and...

Abstract
In this paper, we analyze the tradeoff between the profits gained by mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) in an orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA)-based virtualized wireless network (VWN). In this respect, MVNOs rent the network resources from a mobile network operator (MNO) to create virtual resources based on allocated rates and the cost due to allocated transmit powers in two different strategies: resource-based isolation strategy and rate-based isolation strategy. In resource-based isolation strategy, it is assumed that the whole bandwidth in each base station is divided equally between MVNOs whereas in rate-based isolation strategy, the whole bandwidth in each...

Abstract
We introduce a dynamical picture, referred to as correlation picture, which connects a correlated bipartite state to its uncorrelated counterpart. This picture allows us to derive an exact dynamical equation for a general open-system dynamics with system-environment correlations included. This exact dynamics is in the form of a Lindblad-like equation even in the presence of initial system-environment correlations. For explicit calculations, we also develop a weak-correlation expansion that allows us to introduce systematic perturbative approximations. This expansion provides approximate master equations that can feature advantages over existing weak-coupling techniques. As a special case, we...

Abstract
In this paper, we describe a carbon dioxide mineralization process and its associated solid products. These solid products include amorphous silica, iron hydroxides and magnesium carbonates. These products were subjected to various characterization tests, and the results are published here. It was found that the iron hydroxides from this process can have different crystalline properties, and their formation depended very much on the pH of the reaction conditions. Different forms of magnesium carbonate were also obtained, and the type of carbonate precipitated was found to be dependent on the carbonation temperature. Hydromagnesite was obtained mainly at low temperatures, while dypingite was...

Abstract
To study efficiency of the genetic algorithms (GAs) in optimization of aerodynamic shapes, shape of an airfoil is optimized by a genetic algorithm to obtain maximum lift to drag ratio and maximum lift. The flow field is assumed to be two dimensional, viscous, and transonic and is analyzed numerically. The camber line and thickness distribution of the airfoil are modeled by a fourth order polynomial. The airfoil chord length is assumed constant. Also, proper boundary conditions are applied. A finite volume method using the first order Roe's flux approximation and time marching (explicit) method is used for flow analysis. The simple genetic algorithm (SGA) is used for optimization. This...
Software-level instruction-cache leakage reduction using value-dependence of SRAM leakage in nanometer technologies

Abstract
Within-die process variation is increasing in nanometer-scale process technologies. We observe that the same SRAM cell leaks differently under within-die process variations when storing 0 compared to 1; this difference can be up to 3 orders of magnitude at 60mV variation of threshold voltage (V th). Thus, leakage can be reduced if most often the values that dissipate less leakage are stored in the cache SRAM cells. We take advantage of this fact to reduce instruction-cache leakage by presenting three binary-optimization and software-level techniques: we (i) reorder instructions within basic-blocks so that their bits better match the less-leaky state of their corresponding cache cells, (ii)...

Abstract
A study has been carried out of the effect of an anodizing pre-treatment in a sulphuric acid electrolyte on the strength of AA 5052 alloy/polypropylene joints prepared using friction stir spot welding. Lap-shear tests were used to determine the joint strength. Comparisons were made with joints pre-treated using sand blasting. The failed specimens were examined by scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Anodizing improved the strength of the joints by a factor of about 6 compared with sandblasting. For the anodizing pre-treated joints, melted polymer infiltrated deeply within the nanoporous anodic film, forming a strong polymer-film bond. Joint failure occurred by ductile tearing of...
Majorana zero-energy mode and fractal structure in fibonacci-kitaev chain
, Article Journal of the Physical Society of Japan ; Volume 86, Issue 11 , 2017 ; 00319015 (ISSN) ; Sugimoto, T ; Tohyama, T ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
We theoretically study a Kitaev chain with a quasiperiodic potential, where the quasiperiodicity is introduced by a Fibonacci sequence. Based on an analysis of the Majorana zero-energy mode, we find the critical p-wave superconducting pairing potential separating a topological phase and a non-topological phase. The topological phase diagram with respect to Fibonacci potentials follow a self-similar fractal structure characterized by the box-counting dimension, which is an example of the interplay of fractal and topology like the Hofstadter's butterfly in quantum Hall insulators. © 2017 The Physical Society of Japan
On the monitoring of linear profiles in multistage processes

Abstract
In most modern manufacturing systems, products are often the output of several correlated stages. Nevertheless, quality of a product or process in both single and multistage processes is usually expressed by a single quality characteristic, two or more characteristics, or profiles. Although there are many studies in univariate and multivariate-multistage process monitoring, fewer works focus on profile monitoring of multistage processes. This paper addresses the problem of monitoring a simple linear profile that is going through a multistage process in phase II. Using a first-order autoregressive correlation model, the relationship between the stages is first modeled. Then, the cascade...

Abstract
In most modern manufacturing systems, products are often the output of some multistage processes. In these processes, the stages are dependent on each other, where the output quality of each stage depends also on the output quality of the previous stages. This property is called the cascade property. Although there are many studies in multistage process monitoring, there are fewer works on profile monitoring in multistage processes, especially on the variability monitoring of a multistage profile in Phase-I for which no research is found in the literature. In this paper, a new methodology is proposed to monitor the standard deviation involved in a simple linear profile designed in Phase I to...

Abstract
In this research, fine-grained SnO2-based varistors with a simple microstructure and the mean grain size of 0.8 µm were obtained by the microwave sintering method. The breakdown electric field measured for these varistors was 12 kV/cm that is 3 times higher than the conventional-sintered varistors. The high nonlinear coefficient (60) and low leakage current density (9 µA/cm2) were achieved in fine-grained SnO2 varistors. The fine-grained SnO2 varistors appropriately clamped pulse current surges and the calculated value of the clamping voltage ratio of these varistors was 2. The excellent electrical properties and protective effect of fine-grained SnO2 varistors showed that these varistors...

Abstract
In this study, the dynamic adsorption of asphaltene on a calcite surface is investigated. This study investigates the effect of mixed-salt brines on asphaltene adsorption. The results of this work can facilitate the understanding of the complex wettability behaviour of carbonate reservoirs. All experiments were performed in porous media, which were sand-packs filled with calcite powder, to study the influence of the type and concentration of salt on adsorption. The experiments were conducted with asphaltene concentration of 500 mg/L for brines of NaCl, Na2SO4, and a mixture of the two at various ionic strengths. In addition, two tests were performed with an asphaltene concentration of 2000...
