Significant crosstalk reduction using all-dielectric CMOS-compatible metamaterials

    , Article IEEE Photonics Technology Letters ; Volume 28, Issue 24 , 2016 , Pages 2787-2790 ; 10411135 (ISSN) Khavasi, A ; Chrostowski, L ; Lu, Z ; Bojko, R ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
A recent computational result suggests that highly confined modes can be realized by all-dielectric metamaterials. This substantially decreases crosstalk between dielectric waveguides, paving the way for high-density photonic circuits. Here, we experimentally demonstrate, on a standard silicon-on-insulator platform, that using a simple metamaterial between two silicon strip waveguides results in about a tenfold increase in coupling length. The proposed structure may lead to significant reduction in the size of devices in silicon photonics

Pricing and inventory management for mixed bundled products with stochastic demand

    , Article Journal of Revenue and Pricing Management ; Volume 19, Issue 6 , 2020 , Pages 401-410 Talebian, M ; Li, Z ; Lu, Q ; Sharif University of Technology
    Palgrave Macmillan  2020
    Abstract
We analyse optimal pricing for a retailer that sells two products using a mixed price bundling strategy. We consider substitutable products, where there is a disutility associated with jointly consuming both products. Mixed price bundling implies that customers can freely choose to buy one of the two products, both of them, or neither of them. The retailer determines the price of each product when it is sold separately, the bundle discount if these two products are sold in a bundle, and the inventory levels for each product. We first derive the optimal price and bundle discount when the store traffic is deterministic. Our results show that the mixed bundling strategy is the most beneficial...

Application of hybrid nanofluids in a novel combined photovoltaic/thermal and solar collector system

    , Article Solar Energy ; Volume 239 , 2022 , Pages 102-116 ; 0038092X (ISSN) Kazemian, A ; Salari, A ; Ma, T ; Lu, H ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Because of the low outflow temperature of the conventional photovoltaic thermal systems and lack of electrical production of the solar thermal collectors, a novel combined system is proposed to solve the two mentioned drawbacks. This novel system is achieved by connecting a photovoltaic thermal unit to a solar thermal collector in series. To increase the overall performance of this novel combined system, different hybrid nanofluids include (1) multiwall carbon nanotube-aluminum oxide (2) multiwall carbon nanotube-silicon carbide (3) graphene-aluminum oxide, and (4) graphene-silicon carbide are compared. The investigation is performed based on the three-dimensional simulation, and the...

Organic–inorganic hybrid nanoflowers as a new biomimetic platform for ROS-induced apoptosis by photodynamic therapy

    , Article European Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences ; Volume 191 , 2023 ; 09280987 (ISSN) Borghei, Y. S ; Hamidieh, A. A ; Lu, Y ; Hosseinkhani, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B.V  2023
    Abstract
We report here a newly and facile synthesis of the phospholipids@gold nanoflowers (AuNFs) from intact cells as a new biomimetic organic-inorganic hybrid. The most appealing feature of this nanostructure is its dual-absorbing peak in near infrared (NIR) and visible region of spectra, which makes them a potential light-sensitive agent for reactive oxygen species (ROS)-induced apoptosis. Here, in contrast to previous studies, proposed nanostructures are synthesized in a one-pot reaction using phospholipids present in living cell membranes (as a donor cell) with detectable micro process of AuNF formation. The properties of the resulting AuNFs were evaluated through transmission electron...

    Abstract
The use of randomly distributed graphene platelets as a reinforcing material in tilted curved pipes subjected to supersonic airflow has become an increasingly popular area of research due to their potential to enhance the mechanical and thermal properties of the pipes. In this study, the focus is on investigating the frequency or dynamic response of these reinforced pipes under supersonic airflow conditions. In doing so, a higher-order shear deformation theory is utilized for modeling the displacement field in the tilted pipe structure. Moreover, the classical theory of elasticity with the incorporation of the effects of thermal loading is considered in obtaining governing equations. The...

    Abstract
In this paper, the problem of content caching in 5G cellular networks relying on social-aware device-to-device (D2D) communications is investigated. Our focus is on how to efficiently select important users (IUs) and how to allocate content files to the storage of these selected IUs to form a distributed caching system. We aim at proposing a novel approach for minimizing the downloading latency and maximizing the social welfare simultaneously. In particular, we first model the problem of maximizing the social welfare as a many-to-one matching game based on the social property of mobile users. We study this game by exploiting users’ social properties to generate the utility functions of the...

FESEM images shows Pr doped NMZ ferrite has less agglomerations and more porous structure as compared to NMZ and other rare earths doped NMZ ferrites. Magnetic analysis shows the enhancement in saturation magnetization and remanence with the doping of Y, Pr and Gd in NMZ ferrite. Dielectric properties were...

Impact of rock mineralogy on reservoir souring: A geochemical modeling study

    , Article Chemical Geology ; Volume 555 , November , 2020 Li, H ; Zhang, L ; Liu, L ; Shabani, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B. V  2020
    Abstract
The petroleum industry suffers from reservoir souring phenomena, which has negative impacts on production facilities, health, and environment. Injection of incompatible water into the reservoir (waterflooding), which is considered as an enhanced oil recovery (EOR) method, is one of the most common causes of reservoir souring. In general, injected brine, especially seawater, contains high amounts of sulfate ion (SO42−). A high concentration of sulfate in the presence of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) leads to the microbial reservoir souring. During this phenomenon, sulfide, specifically hydrogen sulfide gas (H2S) appears in the producing fluid of the reservoir. In this paper, a coupled...

A mechanobiological mathematical model of liver metabolism

    Abstract
The liver plays a complex role in metabolism and detoxification, and better tools are needed to understand its function and to develop liver-targeted therapies. In this study, we establish a mechanobiological model of liver transport and hepatocyte biology to elucidate the metabolism of urea and albumin, the production/detoxification of ammonia, and consumption of oxygen and nutrients. Since hepatocellular shear stress (SS) can influence the enzymatic activities of liver, the effect of SS on the urea and albumin synthesis are empirically modeled through the mechanotransduction mechanisms. The results demonstrate that the rheology and dynamics of the sinusoid flow can significantly affect...

    Abstract
The controlled and stable crystal structure, reduction in Curie temperature and semiconducting nature of oxide materials are the key factors for magnetoelectrical applications. Therefore, Co0.6Mn0.4GdxFe2-xO4 where x = 0, 0.033, 0.066 and 0.10 were synthesized to analyse the structural, morphological, magnetic, and electrical properties using a sol-gel autocombustion approach. The X-ray diffraction pattern reveals that the cubic crystallite size decreases with increasing smaller content of Gd3+ oxides without any secondary phase. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) study explain the complete morphology,...

cis-Dioxo-molybdenum(VI)-oxazoline complex catalyzed epoxidation of olefins by tert-butyl hydrogen peroxide

    Abstract
A new efficient catalytic system was investigated for the epoxidation of various olefins by cis-dioxo-bis[2-(2′-hydroxyphenyl)-oxazolinato]molybdenum(VI), cis-[MoO2(phox)2], and TBHP as oxidizing agent. Using this system as catalyst for the oxidation of aliphatic substrates at 80 °C gives the epoxide as the sole product with yields up to 100% and turnover frequency up to 5000 h-1. The efficiency of the catalyst is strongly influenced by the nature of solvent, reaction time and temperature, and a significant increase in the epoxide yields is observed in higher temperatures and longer reaction times. © 2009 Elsevier B.V

Computational simulations of tumor growth and treatment response: Benefits of high-frequency, low-dose drug regimens and concurrent vascular normalization

    Abstract
Implementation of effective cancer treatment strategies requires consideration of how the spatiotemporal heterogeneities within the tumor microenvironment (TME) influence tumor progression and treatment response. Here, we developed a multi-scale three-dimensional mathematical model of the TME to simulate tumor growth and angiogenesis and then employed the model to evaluate an array of single and combination therapy approaches. Treatments included maximum tolerated dose or metronomic (i.e., frequent low doses) scheduling of anti-cancer drugs combined with anti-angiogenic therapy. The results show that metronomic therapy normalizes the tumor vasculature to improve drug delivery, modulates...

Is negative attention better than no attention? The comparative effects of ostracism and harassment at work

    Abstract
Ostracism has been recognized as conceptually and empirically distinct from harassment. Drawing from theory and research that suggests that employees have a strong need to belong in their organizations, we examine the comparative frequency and impact of ostracism and harassment in organizations across three field studies. Study 1 finds that a wide range of employees perceive ostracism, compared with harassment, to be more socially acceptable, less psychologically harmful, and less likely to be prohibited in their organization. Study 2 surveyed employees from a variety of organizations to test our theory that ostracism is actually a more harmful workplace experience than harassment....
