Finite Element Modeling of Cohesive Crack Growth Using Adaptive Mesh Refinement

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Majd Ardakani, Keivan (Author) ; Khoei, Amir Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Under Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics (LEFM) assumptions, the stress at the crack tip is theoretically infinite. Clearly all materials have a finite strength, thus there will always be a plastified zone around the crack tip. If the size of plastic zone is not small compared to the crack size, then linear elastic assumptions are not applicable and a nonlinear model must be used. This damaged zone is referred to as a plastic zone for metals, and a fracture process zone for cementitious materials and ceramics. In this regard a discrete extrinsic cohesive crack model with bilinear traction separation constitutive law, i.e. softening function, is employed and crack propagation is investigated....

Powder metallurgical fabrication and characterization of nanostructured porous NiTi shape-memory alloy

    , Article Materials and Manufacturing Processes ; Volume 21, Issue 8 , 2006 , Pages 727-735 ; 10426914 (ISSN) Sadrnezhaad, Kh ; Arami, H ; Keivan, H ; Khalifezadeh, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    2006
    Abstract
Production of NiTi alloy from elemental powders was conducted by mechanical alloying (MA) and sintering of the raw materials. Effects of milling time and milling speed (RPM) on crystallite size, lattice strain, and XRD peak intensities were investigated by X-ray analysis of the alloy. Powder compaction and sintering time and temperature effects on pore percentage of the as-mixed and the mechanically alloyed samples were empirically evaluated. The crystallite size of the mechanically alloyed Ni50Ti50 samples decreased with MA duration and with the milling speed. Depending on the crystal structure of the raw materials, the lattice strain increases with the milling duration. Metallographic...

Monitoring the Influence of Variations in Remotely-Sensed Values of Sea Surface Temperature Along with the El Niño Phenomenon on the Coral Reefs Bleaching, Case Study: Kish Island, Persian Gulf

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Shabani, Fatemeh (Author) ; Raie, Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Kabiri, Keivan (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
Coral reefs are one of the most important ecosystems in terms of animal diversity and affect the life of organisms in different ways. This ecosystem is under many stresses today. Among the most important events that threaten corals is the event of coral bleaching, the most important cause of which is the increase in Sea Surface Temperature (SST). Therefore, it is highly important to monitor changes in SST affecting corals. Generally, temperature anomalies are investigated using the Degree Heating Weeks index (DHW) and SST data. DHW index is variable in different coral areas and changes with time. Consequently, in the present study, this index has been investigated due to the lack of...

Multi-user opportunistic spectrum access with channel impairments [electronic resource]

, Article AEU - International Journal of Electronics and Communications ; Volume 67, Issue 11, November 2013, Pages 955–966 Majd, A. (Sayyed Arash) ; Salehkalybar, S ; Pakravan, M. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, we study the impact of sensing error and channel fading on the decision process of a multiple secondary user network in a primary network whose channel occupancy states are modelled as a Bernoulli process. We present a randomized access strategy to maximize total secondary network throughput. The proposed method guarantees that the probability of collision between primary and secondary users in each channel is less than the predefined value of Pc = ξ. To find the optimal access strategy, we formulate secondary network throughput as an optimization problem. Then, using the KKT method to find the solution, we break the original problem into multiple sub-problems. Then, we employ...

Cross layer Design in Cognitive Radio Networks

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Majd, Arash (Author) ; Pakravan, Mohammad Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this thesis, the challenges of the PHY and MAC layers in cognitive radio networks are discussed and a plan which considers the cross layer concept between them is presented. In the first part of the thesis, a brief survey on various spectrum sensing techniques is presented. A detector which can improve the network performance is introduced and based on this detector, the important problem of trade-off between spectrum sensing period and the network throughput is considered. For this purpose, first of all, the truncated SPRT detector is presented and for low SNRs the optimal truncation time which leads to maximum network throughput is obtained. In the second part of the thesis,the...

VLSI Architecture of Turbo Decoder for LTE

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ardakani, Arash (Author) ; Shabany, Mahdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Long Term Evolution (LTE) aims the peak data rates in excess of 300 Mb/s, which may appear to be challenging to achieve due to the existence of some blocks such as the turbo decoder. One efficient approach to achieve this throughput is by parallelizing the Log Maximum a Posteriori (MAP) algorithm in the turbo decoder. In fact, the interleaver is known to be a major challenging part of the turbo decoder due to its need to the parallel interleaved memory access. LTE uses Quadratic Permutation Polynomial (QPP) interleaver, which makes it suitable for the parallel decoding. In this thesis, first, we propose an efficient architecture for the QPP interleaver, called the Add-Compare-Select (ACS)...

    Abstract
Long term evolution (LTE)-advanced aims the peak data rates in excess of 3 Gbps for the next generation wireless communication systems. Turbo codes, the specified channel coding scheme in LTE, suffers from a low-decoding throughput due to its iterative decoding algorithm. One efficient approach to achieve a promising throughput is to use multiple Maximum a Posteriori (MAP) cores in parallel, resulting in a large area overhead, a big drawback. The scaled Max-log MAP algorithm is a common approach to implement the MAP algorithm due to its efficient architecture with its acceptable performance. Although many works have been reported to reduce the area of the MAP unit, an efficient VLSI...

The two computationally challenging units in an MAP core are α and β recursion units. Although several methods have been proposed to shorten the critical path of these recursion units, their area-efficient architecture with minimum silicon area is still missing....

    Abstract
5-th generation mobile networks aim the peak data rates in excess of few Gbs, which may appear to be challenging to achieve due to the existence of some blocks such as the turbo decoder. LTE uses Quadratic Permutation Polynomial (QPP) interleaver, which makes it suitable for the parallel decoding. In this paper, a new property of the QPP interleaver, called the correlated shifting property, is theoretically proved, leading to a fully scalable interleaver and a low-complexity address generator for an arbitrary order of parallelism. SPIE  2019
    Abstract
A structure is suggested for spasing. The presented surface plasmon amplification by stimulated emission of Radiation (SPASER) is made up of a graphene nanosphere, which supports localized surface plasmon modes, and a quantum dot array, acting as a gain medium. The gain medium is pumped by an external light source. Since all the plasmons are carried on a graphene platform, the structure features coherent surface plasmons with high confinement and large life time. All the structures are analyzed theoretically using full quantum mechanical description. The main advantage of the proposed SPASER is its simple tuning capability of changing graphene's Fermi level, which is performed by either...

On the rate of oxidation of co on La2O3 doped NiO/Al2O3 catalysts: An artificial neural network approach

    , Article Reaction Kinetics and Catalysis Letters ; Volume 85, Issue 2 , 2005 , Pages 347-353 ; 01331736 (ISSN) Ardakani, S. J ; Gobal, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    2005
    Abstract
The rate constants of the oxidation of CO on a number of pure and La 2O3 doped NiO/Al2O3 solid catalysts were correlated with the mole percent of dopant, calcinations temperature, surface area, pore volume and pore mouth diameter by an artificial neural network simulator. The cross validation method had to be used due to the scarcity of the data. A three-layer network with 3 nodes in the hidden layer was found to simulate the system well. © Akadémiai Kiadó, Budapest. Diversity and multiplexing gains in communication defined analytically, so diversity and multiplexing gain presented as detection probability improvement and throughput or capacity improvement respectively. Also tradeoff between these two gains investigated...

An Applications of Data Mining Techniques in Talent Identification of Football Players

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Safari Majd, Mohammad (Author) ; Akhavan Niaki, Taghi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Data mining in sports, particularly football, has grown significantly in recent years. Football clubs hire data scientists to conduct their transfers based on classification algorithms. These algorithms are employed so that club managers can narrow the numerous options available in the market to a limited number that fits the club's conditions. We understand that financial resources are limited; therefore, a club cannot acquire all the best players simultaneously. This creates a need for financial resource management and a thorough evaluation of a player's transfer. Using datasets from FBref and Transfermarkt, and with the help of machine learning methods, we have attempted to predict a...

    Abstract
Long Term Evolution (LTE) supports peak data rates in excess of 300 Mb/s. A good approach to achieve such rates is by parallelizing the required processing in turbo decoders. An interleaver is an important part of a turbo decoder. LTE uses the Quadratic Permutation Polynomial (QPP) interleaver, which makes it suitable for parallel decoding. In this paper, we propose an efficient architecture for the QPP interleaver, called the Add-Compare-Select (ACS) permuting network. A unique feature of the proposed architecture is that it can be used both as the interleaver and deinterleaver leading to a high-speed low-complexity hardware interleaver/deinterleaver for turbo decoding. The proposed design...

A Critical Reading of Russel on Causation

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Moulavi Ardakani, Reza (Author) ; Taghavi, Mostafa (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Causation is one of the most old and difficult problems of Metaphysics which is also important in Science and Philosophy of Science. There are three different views in the Ontology of Causation—Eliminativism, Fundamentalism and Reductionism. Also we know that the Ontology of Causation can be equated with the question of the difference between Causal and Non-Causal series of events, such that the answers to this question are correspondent to the mentioned views: 1)Eliminativism: There is not any difference between those two series and the concept of Causation does not have any objective or external being. 2)Primitivism: There is a difference between them but it can not be explained in any...

Analysis and Simulation of a Graphene Based Plasmon Laser

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Behjati Ardakani, Sadreddin (Author) ; Faez, Rahim (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In the present thesis, the SPASER is investigated, from theory to structure design. SPASER is a counterpart of laser in 3D subwavelength dimentions. In other words, SPASER does not suffer from the diffraction limit of photons which is a drawback in laser technology. It potentially can generate intense coherent dark and bright surface plasmon modes. The small size of SPASER gives it the capability of being integrated with electronic chips. So, the electronic technology will become faster if the SPASER is realized. In this thesis, we intend to use the unique plasmonic properties of graphene in our designs. Plasmons on graphene platforms have longer propagation length and larger lifetime in...

A multi-sender multicast algorithm for media streaming on peer-to-peer networks

    Abstract
Unlike those on Internet, the media providers on P2P networks are ordinary nodes with limited shared resources such as bandwidth. Multi-sender methods are the best existing solutions to video streaming on P2P networks. In this paper, we propose use of a multicast method on the top of an arbitrary multi-sender method so that all requesting peers receive almost the same expected bit-rate. Experimental results, derived from implementation of the proposed algorithm on Pastry P2P network confirm our claim. Another advantage of our method over the existing methods is its scalability with the number of receivers
