Modeling of Cancer Progression by Using Evolutionary Game Theory
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Habibi, Jafar (Supervisor)
Abstract
Mathematical modeling and computer simulation are powerful tools to help cancer research because they provide a good insight of cancer progression and an efficient framework to test biological hypothesis. Most of the previous studies ignored many intracellular communication between tumor cells. Gap junction is one of the interaction ways between tumor cells which plays a crucial role in cancer progression. In the first phase of this thesis, a model of intracellular communication through gap junction using evolutionary game theory scoring is proposed. In the second phase of this thesis, cancer is modeled by Markov decision process (MDP). Given that considering nutrient level constant is one...

Abstract
Polypropylene (PP) is a fast growing polymer, particularly in automotive industry, where PP compounds have replaced many different parts made of conventional materials. In the first step, PP-g-MA, as compatibilizer, was synthesized. Two kinds of polypropylenes including a homo- and a block co-polymer were incorporated for this goal. Characterizations via titration and FTIR tests revealed higher degree of grafting reaction when homo-polymer was used for synthesizing PP-g-MA. In the next step, nanocomposites containing 3 wt% nanoclay with three different PP-g-MA/nanoclay ratios of 1:1, 2:1 and 3:1were made using a co-rotating twin screw extruder. Tensile, impact and XRD tests were performed to...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Rashidian, Bizhan (Supervisor)
Abstract
X-ray radiation is an ionizing radiation that can be produced under some conditions in an ion implanter and can have significant effects on equipment and personnel health. In this dissertation, we first examine the properties of ionizing radiations and their effects of electronic devices and discuss the general properties of common detectors. Next, Using Silvaco TCAD and GEANT4 we will simulate the interaction of ionzing radiation with energies up to 300 keV with electronic devices including a commercial off the shelf photo diode and a specialized x-ray detector and show that these devices can efficiently reveal informations of a radiation source to the user. Also, it has been shown that...

Abstract
The perovskite oxide BaTiO3, doped with Ge oxides oxidized methane to C2 coupled hydrocarbons. The ultraviolet-visible spectra of pure barium titanate and Ge doped BaTi(1-x) GexO3 (x=0.05 ,0.1) were compared. The pure barium titanate exhibited an ultraviolet absorption effect. The addition of GeO2 resulted in an increase in absorption of wavelength. Therefore, small amount of Ge decreased band gap energy. Oxygen is inserted by nucleophilic attack which may be considered as an acid-base process. For promoted BaTiO3 catalysts with stable cation valance, electron donation ability of lattice oxygen is parallels to its ability of adsorb and active oxygen, and decrease the chance of deep oxidation...

On The Existence of Arithmetic Progressions In Subsets of Integers
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Alishahi, Kasra (Supervisor) ; Hatami, Omid (Supervisor)
Abstract
Suppose that A is a large subset of N. It is interesting to think about the arithmetic progressions in A.In 1936, Erdos and Turan conjectured that for > 0 and k 2 N, there exists N = N(k; ) that for all subsets A {1; 2; : : : ;N}, if lAl N, A has a nontrivial arithmetic progression of length k. Roth proved the conjecture for k = 3 in 1953. In 1969, Szemeredi proved the case k = 4 and in 1975, he gave a combinatorial proof for the general case. In 1977, using ergodic theory, Furstenberg gave a different proof for the Erdos-Turan conjecture (or Szemeredi Theorem!) and finally Gowers found another proof for the Szemeredi theorem, which was an elegant generalization of the Roth’s proof for k =...

Abstract
In this paper, we report on the design and analysis of filters and lenses realized by an array of metallic posts integrated in a parallel-plate waveguide (PPWG). The design methodology of these components is inferred from the modal analysis of a spoof surface plasmonic waveguide composed of metallic posts arranged in a 1D periodic structure inside PPWG. Samples of the proposed devices are analyzed using a full-wave analysis method and their performance is assessed. We show that the mentioned structure can be used to realize all-metallic band-pass filters and lenses for mm-wave and terahertz applications
Experimental and Numerical Study of a Shape Memory Alloy Wire Rope Behavior in Release Mechanism
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Naghdabadi, Reza (Supervisor) ; Arghavani Hadi, Jamal (Supervisor)
Abstract
Smart materials are able to change their physical properties under various environmental conditions. Shape memory alloys (SMA) are relatively new smart materials that can respond to environmental stimuli e.g., heat, electricity, etc. Unique behaviors of SMAs, called shape memory effect and superelasticity, have motivated many applications in various fields of study (aerospace, medical, civil engineering, etc.). Although the behavior of SMAs is complicated, modeling and utilizing these materials have been receiving much attention in the past 20 years. Since a cable tolerate more tension than a wire or rod, the shape memory alloy cables could have a broad range of potential applications....

Abstract
Background and objective There are many cells with various phenotypic behaviors in cancer interacting with each other. For example, an apoptotic cell may induce apoptosis in adjacent cells. A living cell can also protect cells from undergoing apoptosis and necrosis. These survival and death signals are propagated through interaction pathways between adjacent cells called gap junctions. The function of these signals depends on the cellular context of the cell receiving them. For instance, a receiver cell experiencing a low level of oxygen may interpret a received survival signal as an apoptosis signal. In this study, we examine the effect of these signals on tumor growth. Methods We make an...

Abstract
Edit distance is one of the most fundamental problems in combinatorial optimization. Ulam distance is a special case of edit distance where no character is allowed to appear more than once in a string. Recent developments have been very fruitful for obtaining fast and parallel algorithms for both edit distance and Ulam distance. In this work, we present an almost optimal MPC algorithm for Ulam distance and improve MPC algorithms for edit distance. Our algorithm for Ulam distance is optimal in the sense that (1) the approximation factor of our algorithm is 1 + ϵ, (2) the round complexity of our algorithm is constant, (3) the total memory of our algorithm is almost linear (OH(n)), and (4)] the...
Facilitating Data Exchange Between Streaming Processors in GPUs
, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology ; Sadrbazi Azad, Hamid (Supervisor)
Abstract
GPUs are used today to accelerate a wide range of general-purpose applications (e.g., regular stencil applications and irregular graph processing applications). Due to the significant growth of the Thread Level Parallelism (TLP) in GPGPU applications, the need for data sharing between different threads has become more apparent. There are a variety of solutions for reusing data in the GPU (e.g., on-chip caches and shuffle instructions), each with its own drawbacks and reduced comprehensiveness (e.g., limiting shared memory to a thread block and shuffle instructions to a warp). Among the standard general-purpose applications, L1 data cache is a major GPU solution for reusing data among...

Abstract
The Haptic device is capable of interacting dynamically with the operator by the forces it can exert on human's hand. Controlling the haptic device and constraining it through the desired trajectory is the common task in the most of the training systems. Haptic interface application in virtual Persian handwriting learning system is investigated in this paper. Two different modes of learning is investigated: The full guidance mode, guides the user to follow a prerecorded trajectory by applying proper force to operator's hand; whereas in partial guidance, combination of haptics andvisual feedback guides the operator and prevents deviation from the desired trajectory. © 2009 IEEE

Abstract
One of the shortcomings of photoconductive (PC) antennas in terahertz (THz) generation is low effective radiated power in the desirable direction. In this paper, we propose a defective photonic crystal (DPC) substrate consisting of a customized 2D array of air holes drilled into a solid substrate in order to improve the radiation characteristics of THz PC antennas. The effect of the proposed structure on the performance of a conventional THz PC antenna has been examined from several aspects including radiation efficiency, directivity, and field distribution. By comparing the radiation performance of the THz antenna on the proposed DPC substrate to that of the conventional solid substrate, it...

Abstract
In this paper, arrays of two different terahertz (THz) antennas based on defective photonic crystal (DPC) substrates are proposed and their radiation characteristics are investigated by using full-wave simulation. We show that employing DPC substrates in THz photoconductive antenna (PCA) arrays reduces the amount of power coupled to the substrate surface waves and, as a result, decreases the mutual coupling between the elements of the antenna array and increases the directivity in the boresight direction. By studying 1 × 2 arrays of bowtie and four-leaf-clover-shaped antennas, we show that either the improvement of directivity in a broad bandwidth or the enhancement of photomixer antenna...

Abstract
In this paper, a multi-item economic production quantity model with fuzzy demand is developed in which shortages are backordered and the warehouse space is limited. While the demand is assumed to be a trapezoidal fuzzy number, the centroid defuzzification method is used to defuzzify fuzzy output functions. The Lagrangian relaxation procedure is first employed to solve the problem. Then, the model is extended to a constrained fuzzy integer nonlinear programming, in order to suit real-world situations. As the extended model cannot be solved in a reasonable time using exact methods, two meta-heuristic algorithms, named the genetic algorithm (GA) and the particle swarm optimisation (PSO) each...

Abstract
This paper develops an economic production quantity model for a multi-product multi-objective inventory control problem with fuzzy-stochastic demand and backorders. In this model, the annual demand is represented by trapezoidal fuzzy random numbers. The centroid defuzzification and the expected value methods are applied to defuzzify and make decisions in a random environment. In the case where the warehouse space is limited, the Lagrangian relaxation procedure is first employed to determine the optimal order and the maximum backorder quantities of the products such that the total inventory cost is minimized. The optimal solution obtained by the proposed approach is compared with that...
