Investigation of Nano-particle Structures CdS using Density Functional Theory
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Nafari, Naser (Supervisor) ; Rahimitabar, Mohammad Reza (Supervisor)
Abstract
In this project, we have studied the geometric and electronic structures of CdS nano-particles. The bulk CdS is known to be a semiconductor with the experimental energy gap of 2.42eV which is more than twice the theoretical resuls based on LDA or GGA energy functionals used in the density functional theory. However the calculations based on Kohn-Sham formalism used in DFT (KS-DFT) predicts the geometric structure of bulk semiconductors fairly well. Therefore, we have employed the KS-DFT formalism for our CdS nano-particles and have used the Gaussian as well as SIESTA computer codes to predict the geometric structures of these nano-semiconductor-particles. For calculating their electronic...
Combination of wavelet and PCA for face recognition
, Article 2006 IEEE GCC Conference, GCC 2006, Manama, 20 March 2006 through 22 March 2006 ; 2006 ; 9780780395909 (ISBN) ; Kasaei, S ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
This work presents a method to increase the face recognition accuracy using a combination of Wavelet, PCA, and Neural Networks. Preprocessing, feature extraction and classification rules are three crucial issues for face recognition. This paper presents a hybrid approach to employ these issues. For preprocessing and feature extraction steps, we apply a combination of wavelet transform and PCA. During the classification stage, the Neural Network (MLP) is explored to achieve a robust decision in presence of wide facial variations. The computational load of the proposed method is greatly reduced as comparing with the original PCA based method on the Yale and ORL face databases. Moreover, the...
Lithography-directed Self-assembly for Designing Drug Particles of Various Sizes and Morphologies
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Safari, Hanieh (Supervisor)
Abstract
To design a drug delivery system, the drug must be encapsulated within a carrier matrix. One of the main challenges in this field is encapsulating high drug doses while achieving a linear release profile at the target site to maintain drug concentration for optimal therapeutic effects. Consequently, many research groups have focused on refining fabrication techniques to maximize loading efficiency and optimize drug release profiles from delivery systems. A potential approach to addressing this issue is the direct fabrication of a controlled-release system from the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) itself, eliminating the need for a carrier matrix. Studies have demonstrated that such...

Abstract
This work presents a method to increase the face recognition accuracy using a combination of Wavelet, PCA, and SVM. Pre-processing, feature extraction and classification rules are three crucial issues for face recognition. This paper presents a hybrid approach to employ these issues. For pre-processing and feature extraction steps, we apply a combination of wavelet transform and PCA. During the classification stage, SVMs incorporated with a binary tree recognition strategy are applied to tackle the multi-class face recognition problem to achieve a robust decision in presence of wide facial variations. The binary trees extend naturally, the pairwise discrimination capability of the SVMs to...
Kinetic modeling of pyrolysis of scrap tires
, Article Journal of Analytical and Applied Pyrolysis ; Volume 84, Issue 2 , 2009 , Pages 157-164 ; 01652370 (ISSN) ; Farhadi, F ; Khorasheh, F ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
The disposal of used tires is a major environmental problem. With increasing interest on recovery of wastes, pyrolysis is considered as an alternative process for recovering some of the value in scrap tires. An accurate kinetic model is required to predict product yields during thermal or catalytic pyrolysis of scrap tires. Pyrolysis products contain a variety of hydrocarbons over a wide boiling range. A common approach for kinetic modeling of such complex systems is lumping where each lump is defined by a boiling point range. Available experimental data for thermal and catalytic pyrolysis of scrap tires from the literature were used to evaluate two types of lumping models; discrete and...

Abstract
This work presents a method to increase the face recognition accuracy using a combination of Wavelet, PCA, KPCA, and RBF Neural Networks. Preprocessing, feature extraction and classification rules are three crucial issues for face recognition. This paper presents a hybrid approach to employ these issues. For preprocessing and feature extraction steps, we apply a combination of wavelet transform, PCA and KPCA. During the classification stage, the Neural Network (RBF) is explored to achieve a robust decision in presence of wide facial variations. At first derives a feature vector from a set of downsampled wavelet representation of face images, then the resulting PCA-based linear features and...
Pinch Analysis of Heat Exchanger Networks in the Crude Oil Distillation Unit of Bandar-Abbas Refinery
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Sadrhosseini, Hanieh (Supervisor) ; Shafii, Mohammad Behshad (Supervisor)
Abstract
Since oil prices continue to increase, energy conservation remains the prime industrial concern. Existing processes in power plants and oil refineries are not energy efficient as they should be therefore new projects can be defined to increase the energy efficiency without incurring any cost. The most appropriate utility for the processes should be explored to reduce emissions, increase the plant capacities and improve product qualities and energy efficiencies by one coherent strategic plan for the overall site which can be achieved by a full understanding of pinch technology and awareness of the available tools for applying it in practical way. Since the distillation unit of crude oil...
Experimental Investigation of Photovoltaic/thermal-Thermoelectric Hybrid System with Phase Change Material
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Shafiee, Mohammad Behshad (Supervisor) ; Borooshaki, Mehrdad (Supervisor)
Abstract
Nowadays energy consumption increases in our daily life and incredibly enhancement of growth rate can be seen recent years. Hence, the use of renewable energy is prioritized. Solar energy is one of the choices because it is free and available. In this research, it has been tried to get electrical and thermal power at a reasonable cost both during the day and night. The system is equipped with a linear parabolic concentrator with a collector installed in the center of the concentrator which has been installed on its faces photovoltaic cells and thermoelectric modules, and five different systems have been tested with different components. Also, the paraffin has been used as a phase change...

Abstract
Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) as a sort of carbon-based nanomaterials are applied in a multitude of exciting areas. They are effective fluorescent probe for many potential biological and medical applications. In comparison to conventional organic fluorescent probes (organic dyes), GQDs have substantial advantages, such as photostability, excellent solubility, low cytotoxicity and biocompatibility.
In this thesis, green fluorescent GQDs have been prepared via solvothermal method from graphite powder.Various analysis methods were utilized to characterization of the product. So, several experiments on GQDs in solution and in solid substrate at room temperature have been performed. The...
