    Synchronization in Inhibitory Neural Networks

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mehrani Ardebili, Mohsen (Author) ; Moghimi Araghi, Saman (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Centuries passed and the human knew himself as the protagonist who searches around nature and discovers the phenomena. But after the birth of ``neuroscience", his wisdom and the process of reasoning were also added to the list of uncovered subjects. Since its arrival, many scientists started investigating ``reasoning", "sleep", ``memory disorders" etc. with a such framework. One of the main branches of this stream is the ``Synchronization" problem when the neurons get synced in the matter of spiking likelihood. ``Synchronization" means a lot to the community, because it is said that it is one major symptom of Epilepsy. With that said, we need to get to the root of this effect. It seems...

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Alishahi, Fatemeh (Author) ; Mehrani, Khashayar (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this thesis, while a comprehensive study of different methods for the characterization of the optical fibers is done, a unique and effective method is being introduced for the characterization of the dispersion coefficient of Highly Nonlinear Fibers (HNLFs). The proposed method is based on the Brillouin Optical Time Domain Analysis (BOTDA) of a wave generated by the Four Wave Mixing (FWM) interaction. The current method, which includes an experimental scheme and an algorithm for solving the inverse problem, offers high sensitivity and experimental accuracy at the longitudinal resolution of 1 meter. The noise level has been considerably reduced by understanding different sources of the...

Over 10-b On-Chip Impedance Measurement System for High Frequency Range

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mirjalili, Ramin (Author) ; Atarodi, Mojtaba (Supervisor) ; Mehrani, Khashayar (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Diabetes is one of the most catastrophic diseases in the world. There will be an end to patients’ problems if scientists can invent the artificial pancreas, but there is no implantable sensing core available. All of the sensors used for measuring blood glucose level were based on an electrochemical sensor which will generate a glucose level dependent electric current. The chemical structure of that sensor will deny its usability for in vivo applications. By exploring several biological and electrical literatures we introduced a fully electrical method for sensing the blood glucose level by impedance measurement. In this thesis we introduced a new method for sensing the blood glucose...

    Abstract
Abstract. Structural collapse is the main concern for the existing structures which are built in the seismic-prone regions. Therefore, the primary goal of the seismic provisions in building codes is to prevent the global collapse. Iran is located in the Alpine-Himalayan belt, and has experienced some of the most destructive earthquakes in the past century. To evaluate the extent to which the Iranian building code provisions meet the abovementioned objective, the authors conducted a detailed assessment of collapse risk on a set of moderate moment resisting Reinforced Concrete (RC) buildings. While many features might affect the seismic performance of the RC structures, this study considers...

Analysis of the Interaction of Electron Beam and External Field by Considering Space Charge Effect and its Application in EBL Nanolithography

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Farmehini Farahani, Vahid (Author) ; Rashidian, Bizhan (Supervisor) ; Mehrani, Khashayar (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
Due to tremendous growth in usage of electron beams in different applications like VLSI, welding, chemical processes, Polymer industry and medical applications, precise study of these beams is of great importance. One of the most important parameters in studying electron beams characteristics is the phenomenon and effect of space charge. Although in most methods of analyzing electron optical systems, this effect is neglected, however in high density beams, this effect is bold. Space charge effect is due to interaction and electrostatic repulsion force between each of the electrons in the beam, which results in a change in shape and also divergence of beam. It is worth to mention that in...

    Abstract
The current performance-based seismic assessment procedure can be computationally intensive as it requires a large number of time history analyses (THA) each requiring time intensive post-processing of results. This study proposes the endurance time analysis (ETA) method as an alternative method to THA and incremental dynamic analysis (IDA). ETA is a time history based dynamic pushover procedure that applies a set of gradually intensifying acceleration functions to the structure and monitors the performance of the building accordingly. In this paper, the application of ETA in the seismic assessment of multistory steel concentrically braced frames is compared with THA and IDA methods....

Sleepy-LRU: extending the lifetime of non-volatile caches by reducing activity of age bits

    , Article Journal of Supercomputing ; Volume 75, Issue 7 , 2019 , Pages 3945-3974 ; 09208542 (ISSN) Ghaemi, S. G ; Ahmadpour, I ; Ardebili, M ; Farbeh, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Springer New York LLC  2019
    Abstract
Emerging non-volatile memories (NVMs) are known as promising alternatives to SRAMs in on-chip caches. However, their limited write endurance is a major challenge when NVMs are employed in these highly frequently written caches. Early wear-out of NVM cells makes the lifetime of the caches extremely insufficient for nowadays computational systems. Previous studies only addressed the lifetime of data part in the cache. This paper first demonstrates that the age bits field of the cache replacement algorithm is the most frequently written part of a cache block and its lifetime is shorter than that of data part by more than 27×. Second, it investigates the effect of age bits wear-out on the cache...

    Abstract
How does society work? How do groups emerge within society? What are the effects of emotions and memory on our everyday actions? George Homans, like us, had a perspective on what society is, except that he was a sociologist. Homans theory, which is an exchange theory, is based on a few propositions about the fundamental actions of individuals, and how values, memory, and expectations affect their behavior. In this paper, as Homans predicted, our main interest and purpose are to find out whether these propositions lead to the emergence of groups. To do so, computationally, Based on Homans’ prepositions, we provide the opportunity for each agent to exchange with other agents. That is, each...

Investigation of the Fire-Induced Smoke Flow in the Complex Geometries Using The 3d Numerical Method and the Body-Fitted Curvilinear Coordinates

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Savalanpour Ardebili, Hamid Reza (Author) ; Farhanieh, Bijan (Supervisor) ; Afshin, Hossein (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
With the process of achieving a higher state of social development and technological advances, the need for higher and more strict safety standards has been increased. In this regard, it is of great importance to have an accurate understanding of the fire phenomena and its consequences. Among the adverse effects of fire, a significant percentage of the fire fatalities is related to the fire-induced buoyant gases (smoke) flow which can lead to suffocation. Therefore, it is necessary to know the physics of the fire phenomena well. In fire investigation methods, the numerical study is an appropriate choice, because of the lower executive cost (relative to the experimental study) and the wider...
