Abstract
Urban commuters and road authorities are interested in knowing how well their city can manage traffic conditions. It is challenging to make a fair comparison among global cities due to the absence of a consistent, publicly accessible and inexpensive framework. This study proposes a methodology to compare travel time and average speed in different cities. Large cities have a central core, in which many of the major activities take place. This core is called downtown or the central business district (CBD). In this study, a comparison is made by simulating the morning commute trips from origins outside to destinations inside the CBD. The proposed framework outlines how the city and the CBD...

Abstract
Vapor liquid equilibrium (VLE) data has significant role in designing processes which include vapor and liquid in equilibrium. Since it is impractical to measure equilibrium data at any desired temperature and pressure, particularly near critical region, thermodynamic models based on equation of state (EOS) are usually used for VLE estimating. In recent years due to the development of numerical tools like artificial intelligence methods, VLE prediction has been find new alternatives. In the present study a novel method called Least-Squares Support Vector Machine (LSSVM) used for predicting bubble/dew point pressures of binary mixtures containing carbon dioxide (CO 2) + cyclic compounds as...

Abstract
In this study, the semi-clathrate hydrate dissociation pressure for the CO2+N2, CO2+H2, CO2+CH4, and pure CO2 systems in the presence of different concentrations of TBAB aqueous solutions is predicted using a strong machine learning technique of multi-layer perceptron neural network (MLP-NN). The developed model, with an overall correlation coefficient (R2) of 0.9961 and mean square error (MSE) of 5.96E−02, presented an excellent accuracy in prognosticating experimental data. A complete statistical evaluation performed to promise the strength and generality of the multi-layer perceptron artificial neural network (MLP-ANN). In addition, the applicability of the proposed network and quality of...
Autonomous Safe Landing of an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle via Adaptive Prediction-Based Control Barrier Functions in the Presence of Atmospheric Uncertainties
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Pourtakdoust, Hossein (Supervisor) ; Sharifi, Alireza (Supervisor)
Abstract
In recent years, control barrier functions have emerged as a powerful tool for synthesizing safety filters in control systems. However, their use in aviation applications has remained limited. In this thesis, a new class of control barrier functions is developed, followed by an investigation of safe autonomous landing for an unmanned aerial vehicle using safety filters based on the proposed functions. In the first part of the thesis, a control barrier function algorithm is developed that adaptively accounts for the system’s future behavior while considering control input constraints. Consequently, at each sampling time, the high-level control signal is adjusted by the control barrier...

Abstract
Thymol is one of the most widely used chemicals in the cosmetic and health industries and a known antioxidant. There are different methods for the preparation of thymol. One of the efficient methods for the synthesis of thymol is the alkylation of m-cresol using isopropanol as the alkylating agent and ZSM-5 acid catalysts. Different parameters such as SiO2/Al2O3 ratio, temperature and Weight Hourly Space Velocity (WHSV) can affect the conversion and selectivity of m-cresol alkylation. The application of tools to predict the effect of each of the effective factors and, thus, the proposition of a strong model of reaction conditions will lead to maximum conversion and selectivity. A...

Abstract
Tar formation and CO2 emission represent the strongest barrier for use of gasification technology for biomass conversion, whereas sufficing for both is only possible with expensive physical methods and further chemical processing. The use of CaO as a CO2 sorbent within an advanced high-temperature gasification system is able to achieve efficient cracking of the tars to the primary syngas with low emissions. The present work aims to propose a semi-kinetic model on the basis of an Aspen Plus model to describe specific catalytic behavior of calcium oxide on the gasification of rice husk. There has also been an attempt to validate the developed model by means of an experimental study and explore...

Abstract
The aim of this study is to employ feedback control loops to provide a stable forward dynamics simulation of human movement under repeated position constraint conditions in the environment, particularly during stair climbing. A ten-degrees-of-freedom skeletal model containing 18 Hill-type musculotendon actuators per leg was employed to simulate the model in the sagittal plane. The postural tracking and obstacle avoidance were provided by the proportional—integral—derivative controller according to the modulation of the time rate change of the joint kinematics. The stability of the model was maintained by controlling the velocity of the body's centre of mass according to the desired centre of...
Design and Construction of a Soft Actuated Exoskeleton for Hand Rehabilitation of Stroke Patients
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Ghafari, Ali (Supervisor) ; Meghdari, Ali (Supervisor)
Abstract
The main goal of this thesis is the design and development of a rehabilitation device for helping patients “to improve blood circulation” & retain and recover their abilities if possible that were lost during the stroke or a accident like that (my research in karaj/iran shows that it is possible by just movement of the specific body part). The focus is on hand in this thesis because Injuries to the hand are common and can be very debilitating since our hands are our primary means for interacting with our world. For rehabilitation in case of human hand there are several practices that should be done for patients either in home or in a rehabilitation center, time and money that is supposed to...

Abstract
In the past few decades, shaking tables are widely used to evaluate system response of structures under seismic excitations. These devices are used without any fundamental research performed on a shaking table system as an entity model. In most of these studies for simplicity, it is assumed that there exist no considerable vibration and displacement around the shaking tables, and no attention is paid to the peripheral substances such as soil settled under the foundation.
In this thesis, result of ambient vibration test on shaking table system (solid deck, concrete foundation and soil layer) has been presented. Precise sensors known as low frequency and high accuracy accelerometers have...

Abstract
Unlike gold and silver, aluminum shows a localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) over a wide spectral range from ultraviolet (UV) to the visible region. Herein, we demonstrate a new process to optically couple TiO2 nanotubes (NTs) with a high-strength aluminum substrate, to achieve a synergistic enhancement of photocatalytic antibacterial effects through controlled LSPR of aluminum. The high-strength aluminum substrate was produced by tubular channel angular pressing (TCAP). Their LSPR was tailored through the formation of superficial nano-concave arrays (NCAs) with desired concave diameters. A layer of aligned TiO2 NTs was fabricated on the surface of aluminum nano-concave arrays (Al...

Comparison between Performance of Stone Columns and RAPs from the Bearing Capacity and Settlement Reduction Viewpoints
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Pak, Ali (Supervisor)
Abstract
Out of several ground improvement techniques available, stone columns have been widely used. This technique has been successfully applied to increase the bearing capacity and to reduce the settlement for foundation of structures like liquid storage tanks, earthen embankments, raft foundations, etc., where a relatively large settlement is permissible. This technique has, generally, been proven successful in increasing the stiffness of weak soils, upgrading their safe bearing capacity, and reducing their total and differential settlements, as well as speeding up their consolidation process. The beneficial effects of stone column installation in weak deposits is manifested in the form of...
Performance of Partially Filled Mini-Channels with Porous Media
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Nouri, Ali (Supervisor) ; Moosavi, Ali (Co-Advisor)
Abstract
Laminar forced convection flow through a channel partially filled with a porous material was numerically studied in this thesis. The Navier-Stokes and Brinkman-Forchheimer equations were used to model the fluid flow in the free and porous regions, respectively. Coupling of the pressure and velocity fields was resolved using the SIMPLEC algorithm. The local thermal equilibrium was adopted in the energy equation. The effects of the thermal conductivity ratio, Darcy number, porosity, Reynolds number and height of the porous insert on velocity and temperature field were investigated. The results show that the flow behavior and its associated heat transfer are susceptible to the variation of the...
