A Markov Decision Processes Model for Supplier Selection in Supply-Chain Management Under Uncertainty

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Milani, Hamed (Author) ; Haji, Alireza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
There are several types of uncertainty in supply chains that cause some difficulties in the planning of a supply chain. Uncertainty on the supply side can cause interruptions in the quality, quantity, or delivery time of orders. To avoid such interruptions, retailers usually contract with two different suppliers for a common good. In this setting, one of the suppliers has higher reliability and higher price, while the other supplier offers a lower price but has a lower level of reliability. In other words, to ensure a lower level of uncertainty, retailers have to pay more. This is one of the main tradeoffs in the dual sourcing strategy. In this thesis, we consider a two-echelon supply chain...

    Abstract
The general goal of the facility layout problem is to arrange a given number of facilities to minimize the total cost associated with the known or projected interactions between them. One of the special classes of the facility layout problem is the Single Row Facility Layout Problem (SRFLP), which consists of finding an optimal linear placement of rectangular facilities with varying dimensions on a straight line. This paper first presents and proves a theorem to find the optimal solution of a special case of SRFLP. The results obtained by this theorem prove to be very useful in reducing the computational efforts when a new algorithm based on tabu search for the SRFLP is proposed in this...

    Abstract
In transition from concept design to detail design, designers and engineers need to find specific materials to optimize performance of the systems. The large number of materials and the wide range of manufacturing processes cause engineers always to seek new materials selection methods. In this research work a new method so called QFD method, which employs materials indices, is introduced. The method enjoys a combination of Ashby's materials selection concepts with the Quality Function Deployment (QFD) tool. The QFD method, which is modified here to fit the materials selection field, provides the designer with the required weighting factors for the material indices. Incorporation of House of...

An exponential placement method for materials selection

    , Article International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology ; Volume 78, Issue 1-4 , 2015 , Pages 641-650 ; 02683768 (ISSN) Ardeshirilajimi, A ; Aghanouri, A ; Abedian, A ; Milani, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Springer-Verlag London Ltd  2015
    Abstract
In this paper, an innovative method is proposed for material selection. This method is based on the well-known weighting properties approach while integrating a new exponential function in the method to overcome the deficiencies of previously proposed methods. Using a maximum and minimum, in each significant aspect of the problem, for scaling, the values of material properties and achieving more realistic results by not emphasizing on any of the high and low extremes and using an exponential function that ranks the candidates regardless of their number, for improving the performance of the methodology and obtaining more absolute rankings, are some of the advantages of this method. The...

Software Test Data Generation Using Genetic Algorithms

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Zamen Milani, Farzad (Author) ; Mahdavi Amiri, Nezameddin (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In software testing, it is often desirable to find test inputs that exercise specific program features. Good testing means uncovering as many faults as possible with a potent set of tests. Thus, a test series that has the potential to uncover many faults is better than one that can only uncover a few. To find these inputs by hand is extremely time-consuming, especially when the software is complex. Therefore, many attempts have been made to automate the process. There are three major methods to generate software test data: Random test data generation, Symbolic test data generation and Dynamic test data generation. Dynamic test data generation, such as those using genetic algorithms, is...

    Abstract
Occurrence of natural disasters such as earthquake could seriously damage most buildings especially those with insufficient resistance located in urban worn-out textures. In order to reduce unpleasant consequences of an earthquake, appropriate policies need to be considered to persuade the beneficiaries to follow retrofitting standards in the process of planning, designing, and construction of buildings. These policies shall be implemented through institutions in arbitrary or obligatory forms, by encouragement or penalty mechanisms. In order to consider these policies, first of all we need to identify the beneficiaries and their particulars. By studying and considering subjects discussed in...

Development of a Multi-functional Soil Column for Studying Bioremediation and Multiphase Flow

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Samari, Peyman (Author) ; Sadeghi, Hamed (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Soil and water pollution is one of the most common types of pollution in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. The development of mines and the oil and petrochemical industry on one hand and the non-compliance with environmental requirements on the other hand have caused large amounts of hydrocarbon pollutants and heavy metals to enter the environment in recent decades. Petroleum materials and heavy metals leak into the surrounding environment during drilling and extraction in oil sites and mines or during land and sea transportation, despite the measures taken to control their pollution. The conducted studies show that human industrial activities are the only cause of environmental pollution...
