    Abstract
In this Study, experimental tests were carried out to investigate the effects of adding water-based ferrofluid to diesel fuel in a diesel engine. These effects included the combustion performance and exhaust emission characteristics of the diesel engine. To this end, emulsified diesel fuels of 0, 0.4, and 0.8 ferrofluid/Diesel ratios by volume were used in a four stroke diesel engine. The results indicate that adding ferrofluid to diesel fuel has a perceptible effect on engine performance, increasing the brake thermal efficiency and decreasing the brake specific fuel consumption as compared to diesel fuel. Furthermore, adding ferrofluid to diesel fuel increased the exhaust gaseous...

Some Bounds on Randić Index of Graphs

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mobini, Melika (Author) ; Akbari, Saeed (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In 1975 a Chemist Milan Randić proposed a concept named Randić index which is defined as follows: This index is generalized by replacing any real number α with which is called the general Randić index. Let G be a graph of order n. Erdős and Bollobás showed the lower bound for Randić index, Also, an upper bound for Randić index is n/2. In 2018 Suil O and Yongtang Shi proved a lower bound with minimum and maximum degree of a graph. They have shown for graph G we have, R(G) Also, a relation between Randić index and the energy of the graph has found. Indeed, it was proved that E(G) ⩾ 2R(G), where E(G) is the energy of graph. Many important bounds related to graph parameters for Randić index...

Test-retest reliability of Kinect's measurements for the evaluation of upper body recovery of stroke patients

    , Article BioMedical Engineering Online ; Volume 14, Issue 1 , 2015 ; 1475925X (ISSN) Mobini, A ; Behzadipour, S ; Saadat, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    BioMed Central Ltd  2015
    Abstract
Background: Performance indices provide quantitative measures for the quality of motion, and therefore, assist in analyzing and monitoring patients' progress. Measurement of performance indices requires costly devices, such as motion capture systems. Recent developments of sensors for game controllers, such as Microsoft Kinect, have motivated many researchers to develop affordable systems for performance measurement applicable to home and clinical care. In this work, the capability of Kinect in finding motion performance indices was assessed by analyzing intra-session and inter-session test-retest reliability. Method: Eighteen stroke patients and twelve healthy subjects participated in this...

An Investigation on Concrete Frames Reinforced with Shape Memory Alloys in Plastic Hinge Zones

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mobini, Mohammad Hossein (Author) ; Khalu, Alireza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this paper, the response of a concrete one-story frame with smart rebars under static lateral loading has been numerically studied, using Finite Element Method. The material used in this study is Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) which contains nickel and titanium elements. During lateral loading, rebars yield or concrete crushes in compression zone in some parts of the RC frames and also residual deflections are created in the structure. The SMA exhibits little residual strains under cycles of loading and unloading even after passing the yielding zone. In addition, SMAs have a good energy dissipation capacity that helps reduce damage while increasing structural capacity. In this study, SMA rebars...

Casting Method Development and Characteristics Enhancement of High Performance Concrete by Utilization of Nano-SiO2 Particles and Different Types of Fibers

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Mobini, Mohammad Hossein (Author) ; Khaloo, Alireza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of applying low replacement ratios (0.75% and 1.50% of the binder weight) of nano-SiO2 particles with different specific surface areas (200 and 380 m2/g) on the properties of high-performance concrete (HPC). Mechanical (compressive and splitting tensile strengths), electrical resistivity, non-destructive (ultrasonic pulse velocity), and microstructural (mercury intrusion porosimetry, X-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy) tests were conducted to investigate the macroscopic and microscopic effects of nano-SiO2 particles on HPC characteristics. The results indicated that the performance of nano-SiO2 particles significantly...

Accuracy of Kinect's skeleton tracking for upper body rehabilitation applications

    , Article Disability and Rehabilitation: Assistive Technology ; Vol. 9, issue. 4 , 2014 , pp. 344-352 ; ISSN: 17483107 Mobini, A ; Behzadipour, S ; Saadat Foumani, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2014
    Abstract
Games and their use in rehabilitation have formed a new and rapidly growing area of research. A critical hardware component of rehabilitation programs is the input device that measures the patients' movements. After Microsoft released Kinect, extensive research has been initiated on its applications as an input device for rehabilitation. However, since most of the works in this area rely on a qualitative determination of the joints' movements rather than an accurate quantitative one, detailed analysis of patients' movements is hindered. The aim of this article is to determine the accuracy of the Kinect's joint tracking. To fulfill this task, a model of upper body was fabricated. The...

Hand acceleration measurement by Kinect for rehabilitation applications

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 24, Issue 1 , 2017 , Pages 191-201 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Mobini, A ; Behzadipour, S ; Foumani, M. S ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Affordable motion sensors that are recently developed for video gaming have formed a budding line of research in the field of physical rehabilitation. These sensors have been used in many task-based applications to analyze the patients' status based on their completion of assigned tasks. However, as the accuracy of such sensors is lower than that of the clinical ones, their measured data has had very limited use in quantitative motion analysis to this date. The aim of this article is to determine Kinect's ability and accuracy in calculating higher-order kinematic parameters, such as velocity and acceleration, in hand movements. Four methods, i.e. moving average, Butterworth filter, B-spline,...

    Abstract
The aim of this paper is to propose a scheduling method to consider reliability along with makespan in grid computing systems. The reliability of task execution is considered in the proposed method to increase the chance of running large-scale and computationally intensive workflows successfully. To handle situations in which a resource failure in a possible scheduling solution occurs, the proposed method finds a collection of scheduling solutions instead of only one solution to run the workflow. It leads to have chance to run an alternative scheduling solution that is not using the failed resource. To find the most optimized scheduling solutions, we exploit the lately developed...

Dark silicon and the history of computing

    Academic Press Inc  2018
    Abstract
For many years, computer designers benefitted from Moore's law and Dennard scaling to significantly improve the speed of single-core processors. The failure of Dennard scaling pushed the computer industry toward homogenous multicore processors for the performance improvement to continue without significant increase in power consumption. Unfortunately, even homogeneous multicore processors cannot offer the level of energy efficiency required to operate all the cores at the same time in today's and especially tomorrow's technologies. As a result of lack of energy efficiency, not all the cores in a multicore processor can be functional at the same time. This phenomenon is referred to as dark...

    Temporal prefetching

    , Article Advances in Computers ; 2021 ; 00652458 (ISSN) Lotfi-Kamran, P ; Sarbazi Azad, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Academic Press Inc  2021
    Abstract
Many applications, including big-data server applications, frequently encounter data misses. Consequently, they lose significant performance potential. Fortunately, data accesses of many of these applications follow temporal correlations, which means data accesses repeat over time. Temporal correlations occur because applications usually consist of loops, and hence, the sequence of instructions that constitute the body of a loop repeats many times, leading to data access repetition. Temporal data prefetchers take advantage of temporal correlation to predict and prefetch future memory accesses. In this chapter, we introduce the concept of temporal prefetching and present two instances of...

    Abstract
Many applications extensively use data objects with a regular and fixed layout, which leads to the recurrence of access patterns over memory regions. Spatial data prefetching techniques exploit this phenomenon to prefetch future memory references and hide their long latency. Spatial prefetchers are particularly of interest because they usually only need a small storage budget. In this chapter, we introduce the concept of spatial prefetching and present two instances of spatial data prefetchers, SMS and VLDP. © 2021 Elsevier Inc

    Abstract
The present paper discusses the possibility of adding recycled polymer fibres to high performance concrete (HPC). Fibres used in this study were recovered from discarded car timing belts. To investigate different characteristics of the concrete specimens several destructive and non-destructive tests, such as compressive strength, modulus of rupture, flexural toughness, ultrasonic velocity and electrical resistance tests were carried out. In addition, slump flow tests were conducted on the fresh concrete. Experimental results from the study showed that the use of low percentages (up to 0.5%) of waste fibres improved the modulus of rupture and flexural toughness. Based on ultrasonic and...
