, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Sharifian, Mohammad Ali (Supervisor) ; Mobini Dehkordi, Ali (Supervisor)
Abstract
Iran is a country with bright cultural and historical background, and rich natural resources. It is also one of the important oil and gas exporters with a special geographical situation. The world energy needs are increasing rapidly and that requires higher oil production. On the other hand, oil is Iran’s most important source of revenue and the country is highly dependent on oil export. Islamic republic of Iran’s (I.R.I) 1404 program is visioning the country to be the first producer of material in the region, the second producer of oil in OPEC, and the third producer of gas in the world. Although critical conditions can slow down the process to achieve the vision, implementing this vision...
Biogeography-Based Optimization of Makespan and Reliability in Grid Computing Systems
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Movaghar Rahimabadi, Ali (Supervisor)
Abstract
The aim of this paper is to propose a scheduling method to consider reliability along with makespan in grid computing systems. The reliability of task execution is considered in the proposed method to increase the chance of running large-scale and computationally intensive workflows successfully. To handle situations in which a resource failure in a possible scheduling solution occurs, the proposed method finds a collection of scheduling solutions instead of only one solution to run the workflow. It leads to have chance to run an alternative scheduling solution that is not using the failed resource. To find the most optimized scheduling solutions, we exploit the lately developed...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Nouri Borujerdi, Ali (Supervisor)
Abstract
The aim of this research is to consider the effect of geometric changes on pumping performance of two phase gas-fluid flow in a vertical pipe. The idea is to inject a light gas to the bottom of a tube full of fluid so we will obtain an upward flow due to density differences. Potential benefits of this device are numerous such as dredging of river estuaries and harbors, sludge extraction in sewage treatment plant, water treatment and many others. There are almost four distinct flow patterns which occurs in the rise pipe, bubbly flow, slug flow, churn flow and annular flow that each of them require special conditions. heat transfer between two phases, phase changes, mass and volume rate...
Some Bounds on Randić Index of Graphs
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Akbari, Saeed (Supervisor)
Abstract
In 1975 a Chemist Milan Randić proposed a concept named Randić index which is defined as follows: This index is generalized by replacing any real number α with which is called the general Randić index. Let G be a graph of order n. Erdős and Bollobás showed the lower bound for Randić index, Also, an upper bound for Randić index is n/2. In 2018 Suil O and Yongtang Shi proved a lower bound with minimum and maximum degree of a graph. They have shown for graph G we have, R(G) Also, a relation between Randić index and the energy of the graph has found. Indeed, it was proved that E(G) ⩾ 2R(G), where E(G) is the energy of graph. Many important bounds related to graph parameters for Randić index...
A Critical Study of the Civil Disobedience
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Taheri Khoramabadi, Ali (Supervisor)
Abstract
Civil disobedience, as a protest mechanism, is one of the important topics discussed in political philosophy. The background of this idea dates back to Henry Thoreau, and later John Rawls played a very influential role in its theoretical development. The aim of this thesis is to conduct a critical study of this idea, focusing on the issue of its justification. The emphasis on the justification is placed firstly due to its central position in the discussions of normative political philosophy and secondly due to the controversial nature of civil disobedience in opposing official legal procedures. To this end, we have first discussed the definition of civil disobedience in two traditional and...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Molaei Dehkordi, Asghar (Supervisor) ; Rashidi, Ali Moradi (Supervisor)
Abstract
CO2 as a green house gas plays a significant role in the global warming and weather changes. Absorption by means of amine solutions is the main industrial technique for separating of CO2 from gas mixtures. Hazards associated with high temperature during solvent recovery, large size of equipment, corrosion, solvent degradation, and other reasons has made researchers to look for alternative processes such as adsorption. The aim of this study was to synthesis and modify the nano adsorbent for CO2 capture. To fulfill this purpose, various nano silica structures were synthesized and the amount of adsorption of each sample was determined. To investigate the performance capability nano_adsorbents,...

Abstract
Background: Performance indices provide quantitative measures for the quality of motion, and therefore, assist in analyzing and monitoring patients' progress. Measurement of performance indices requires costly devices, such as motion capture systems. Recent developments of sensors for game controllers, such as Microsoft Kinect, have motivated many researchers to develop affordable systems for performance measurement applicable to home and clinical care. In this work, the capability of Kinect in finding motion performance indices was assessed by analyzing intra-session and inter-session test-retest reliability. Method: Eighteen stroke patients and twelve healthy subjects participated in this...
An Investigation on Concrete Frames Reinforced with Shape Memory Alloys in Plastic Hinge Zones
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Khalu, Alireza (Supervisor)
Abstract
In this paper, the response of a concrete one-story frame with smart rebars under static lateral loading has been numerically studied, using Finite Element Method. The material used in this study is Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) which contains nickel and titanium elements. During lateral loading, rebars yield or concrete crushes in compression zone in some parts of the RC frames and also residual deflections are created in the structure. The SMA exhibits little residual strains under cycles of loading and unloading even after passing the yielding zone. In addition, SMAs have a good energy dissipation capacity that helps reduce damage while increasing structural capacity. In this study, SMA rebars...

Abstract
Games and their use in rehabilitation have formed a new and rapidly growing area of research. A critical hardware component of rehabilitation programs is the input device that measures the patients' movements. After Microsoft released Kinect, extensive research has been initiated on its applications as an input device for rehabilitation. However, since most of the works in this area rely on a qualitative determination of the joints' movements rather than an accurate quantitative one, detailed analysis of patients' movements is hindered. The aim of this article is to determine the accuracy of the Kinect's joint tracking. To fulfill this task, a model of upper body was fabricated. The...

Abstract
Affordable motion sensors that are recently developed for video gaming have formed a budding line of research in the field of physical rehabilitation. These sensors have been used in many task-based applications to analyze the patients' status based on their completion of assigned tasks. However, as the accuracy of such sensors is lower than that of the clinical ones, their measured data has had very limited use in quantitative motion analysis to this date. The aim of this article is to determine Kinect's ability and accuracy in calculating higher-order kinematic parameters, such as velocity and acceleration, in hand movements. Four methods, i.e. moving average, Butterworth filter, B-spline,...

Resource Management in a Distribution System with High-Penetration of Renewable Energies Considering Flexibility Concept
, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology ; Abbaspour Tehrani Fard, Ali (Supervisor) ; Fotuhi Firuzabad, Mahmud (Co-Supervisor)
Abstract
Power distribution systems are experiencing restructuring owning to the increasing trend of integrating renewable energy sources as well as privatization in the network. In this regard, the dependence of power generation by renewable energy sources on meteorological characteristics would challenge the conventional procedures of operating the system. Respectively, while the expansion of renewable energy sources would facilitate supplying the demand loads locally; the issues associated with the uncertainty and variability of power generation by these units should be addressed in future operational schemes of distribution systems. This condition has resulted in the development of the...
