Proposing a Method for Forecasting Interrupted Time Series based on Fuzzy Logic: a System Dynamics Approach
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Khedmati, Majid (Supervisor)
Abstract
Performing analysis and forecasting is crucial. Better forecasting will lead to better decisions. One method for predicting the future is time series analysis. In reality, it is common for an intervention to occur and alter the characteristics of a time series. In recent years, interrupted time series analysis has been receiving a lot of attention. A new forecasting method for interrupted time series has been developed in this study. This is a system dynamics-based approach. At every stage of the approach, system thinking is incorporated. In order to model the effects of a given intervention, common modes of behavior in dynamic systems are used. Furthermore, control theory has been used to...

Abstract
In this paper, we consider the coherent radar detection of rapid fluctuating signals in the Gaussian noise. This problem has been previously solved by employing the GLR technique, but we use the ALR to improve the detection performance. So, after deriving an approximate ALR detector, we compare the new detector with the GLR and ' Square-law detectors and we show its superiority
A Feedback-based Process of Corporate Structur Design
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Modarres, Abdolhamid (Supervisor)
Abstract
Designing the structure of organization is one of the most important issues confronting all managers, especially those in large corporations. Structure design process consists of making several trade-offs about parameters that are affected with various contingency factors. This leads manages to confusion so some of them have no plans for progressing this process. Referring to organization theory and design, one sees a large number of models of organizational structure design. But there is not any means to compare them with each other. In this research, next the introduction of a conceptual feed-back model of organizational structure design process, three well-known processes in the last...
Benefit Segmentation Based on Service Quality Dimensions in Retail Banking in Iran
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Modarres, Abdolhamid (Supervisor)
Abstract
Banks and financial services typically focus on geographic, demographic, socio-economic, and psychological characteristics to segment the market, in spite of the fact that these are not efficient predictors of future buying behavior of customers. In the present study, benefit segmentation has been used to group retail banking customers in relation to their particular attitudes and behavior. In particular, the identification and measurement of the two major dimensions of service quality, process (how the service is delivered) and outcome (what is delivered) have been investigated to better understand of what constitutes service quality from the customer’s viewpoint. In order to derive...
Dynamic Pricing of Perishable Products Considering the Advertisement
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Modarres, Mohammad (Supervisor)
Abstract
Seasonal Products are a group of products with a limited life time. If seasonal products are not sold during a specified time, they have to be sold at a salvage price which is close to zero. Although one can find many studies in the literature regarding pricing of this type of products in order to maximize the profit, none of them have considered the simultaneous effect of both advertising and pricing. The objective of this paper is to introduce an integrated model of dynamic pricing and advertising for seasonal products. The advertisement is classified into two main categories; to advertise a specific type of product and to advertise the brand of the company. To obtain the mentioned goal,...
Identifying the Effective Factors on Corporate Venturing as a Growth Strategy Path
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Modarres, Abdolhamid (Supervisor)
Abstract
In this research, effective factors on corporate venturing are identified. These factors are categorized in three main groups including “corporate venturing objectives”, “Parent factors” and “Venture factores”. After examining the framework and decision making boundaries, the developed model identifies different corporate venturing types and in the next stage, these types are clusterd and labled. Specifically, this research makes a difference between two phases of “initating” the ventures and “designing” them. Based on the logic that different types of ventures need different types of designing and structuring, influencing parameters on designing corporate ventures are identified as a...
Dynamic Pricing of Charter Flight Tickets with Learning
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Modarres, Mohammad (Supervisor)
Abstract
In this thesis, an approach is developed to obtain an optimal pricing policy for chartered flights. In order to do so, a model within the framework of dynamic programming is presented and its main structure is also analyzed. Since in real world cases the dimension of this model happens to be very large, a solution method is developed by “Q Learning” technique. This is an appropriate approach in approximate dynamic programming and reinforcement learning. Analysis is carried out under two different assumptions regarding demand, namely “linear-deterministic” and probabilistic demand for transition probabilities. An exact solution for deterministic demand case is developed. Furthermore, for...
Joint optimization of pricing and advertisement for seasonal branded products
, Article World Academy of Science, Engineering and Technology ; Volume 71 , 2010 , Pages 141-147 ; 2010376X (ISSN) ; Aslani, S ; Sharif University of Technology
2010
Abstract
The goal of this paper is to develop a model to integrate "pricing" and "advertisement" for short life cycle products, such as branded fashion clothing products. To achieve this goal, we apply the concept of "Dynamic Pricing". There are two classes of advertisements, for the brand (regardless of product) and for a particular product. Advertising the brand affects the demand and price of all the products. Thus, the model considers all these products in relation with each other. We develop two different methods to integrate both types of advertisement and pricing. The first model is developed within the framework of dynamic programming. However, due to the complexity of the model, this method...
Revenue management approach to stochastic capacity allocation problem
, Article European Journal of Operational Research ; Volume 192, Issue 2 , 2009 , Pages 442-459 ; 03772217 (ISSN) ; Sharifyazdi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
2009
Abstract
To formulate stochastic capacity allocation problems in a manufacturing system, the concept and techniques of revenue management is applied in this research. It is assumed the production capacity is stochastic and hence its exact size cannot be forecasted in advance, at the time of planning. There are two classes of "frequent" and "occasional" customers demanding this capacity. The price rate as well as the penalty for order cancellation caused by overbooking is different for each class. The model is developed mathematically and we propose an analytical solution method. The properties of the optimal solution as well as the behavior of objective function are also analyzed. The objective...

Dynamic Pricing by Considering Reference Price Effects in Competitive Environment
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Modarres, Mohammad (Supervisor)
Abstract
Taking into account the impact of advertising on the reference price, we propose an optimal pricing strategy for supply chains in competitive industries subject to reference price effect. Most of researches do not consider the competition among supply chains. An industry with two competing supply chains is considered. Each supply chain includes a manufacturer who sells his/her product via a retailer. There are two types of structures: integrated and decentralized (it is assumed that the relation in a chain is Manufacturer– Stackelberg). Each manufacturer offers wholesale price to his/her retailer anticipating the retailer’s order quantity. In addition, the retailers choose their retail...
Valuation of Emerging Companies by Taking into Account the Rate of Discounting of the Variable and Volatility Changes Using the New Valuation Approaches
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Modarres, Mohammad (Supervisor)
Abstract
Nowadays the evaluation startups has been difficult and this problem increases the likelihood of misunderstanding price of company's stock. Companies need precise evaluation in different steps of their development. during fund-raising, To make the investors’ share determine, the value of companies should be calculated because the investors’ share equals the ratio of new investment to the value of company after investment. Besides, during the merge or possession of a company, to determine the value of the deal or the share of the dealers, we need to evaluate value of the company. to evaluate the Intrinsic value of company, we need to know potential revenue streams, financial statements, the...

Abstract
This paper provides a framework to study the integration of network marketing in a dual-channel distribution system. We develop an approach to optimize the main decision variables of this system simultaneously. These decision variables include the price paid by the customers of both channels, confidence level, the effort level of active distributors of network marketing, and wholesale price. Although both channels compete with each other, it is vital to have a balanced pricing system to keep them motivated. However, the prices in network marketing and traditional retailer system are not necessarily equal due to the differences in their nature. Furthermore, it is also required to develop an...

Abstract
In this paper, a new approach to formulate a class of scheduling problems is introduced, which can be applied to many other discrete problems with complicated structures. The concept of graph circular coloring is applied to develop a model for the special case of an open shop scheduling problem. In this problem, there are some independent jobs to be processed in a shop with dedicated renewable resources. Each job consists of several tasks with no precedence restriction. Each task is processed without preemption. The processing time of the tasks is given. Processing each task requires using some multiple specified types of resource, while no more than one task can use each resource,...
Application of network theory and AHP in urban transportation to minimize earthquake damages
, Article Journal of the Operational Research Society ; Volume 53, Issue 12 , 2002 , Pages 1308-1316 ; 01605682 (ISSN) ; Zarei, B ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
Network theory and Saaty's analytic heirarchy process (AHP) are considered to be effective methods for estimating a city's traffic pattern during the emergency period of an earthquake, and for evaluating the urban transportation network of that city. A graph is created in which the nodes are land uses (or a group of land uses), crossroads or junctions represent the city, and the arcs are the streets. AHP is used to determine the priority of trips, and shortest path techniques identify the fastest routes for daily trips, and the safest ones during earthquakes. A pareto diagram then shows those streets that play an important role in satisfying both criteria. On the basis of the trip patterns...
Optimization of reliability determined hydro-thermal power systems
, Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 9, Issue 3 , 2002 , Pages 237-247 ; 10263098 (ISSN) ; Farrokhzad, D ; Sharif University of Technology
Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
In this paper, the optimization of long term operation and determination of the reliability level of a hydro-thermal power system are integrated into a unified model. Inflow to reservoirs is modeled as a random variable. Furthermore, the demand for energy is also assumed to be a random variable with normal distribution. In order to minimize the total cost, the reliability level of the system is determined, rather than considering it as a priori input data. Since the resulting model is a large-scale stochastic nonlinear programming, it is necessary to develop a special method to solve it. This method, which provides an optimal solution within three stages, consists of a decomposition...
Reliability consideration in optimization of cascaded hydrothermal power systems
, Article International Journal of Power and Energy Systems ; Volume 23, Issue 1 , 2003 , Pages 6-14 ; 10783466 (ISSN) ; Farrokhzad, D ; Sharif University of Technology
2003
Abstract
This article investigates optimization of long-term operation of hydrothermal power systems consisting of cascaded reservoirs. Due to stochasticity of reservoir inflows, demand for energy, and unit forced outages, the uncertainty of this system is so significant that reliability of demand satisfaction becomes an indispensable component of the modelling process. On the other hand, existence of stochastic parameters, especially in the case of cascaded reservoirs, makes the problem very difficult to solve by applying existing optimization techniques. A hybrid genetic algorithm with dynamic tuning of its control parameters is developed that incorporates real number encoding and an analytical...
Managing Networked Businesses Considering Network Effects
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Modarres, Abdolhamid (Supervisor)
Abstract
Networked businesses refer to those businesses which establish flow of value between their customers through platforms. Networks create value by preparing the access of customers to each other and facilitating the interactions between them. Today more than 60% of fortune100 companies capture revenue through a network concept. The most important issue which makes networked businesses different from traditional businesses is a phenomenon named Network Effects. Network Effects is the relationship exists between the value of a network to its users and the number of users connected to the network. In this research reviewing literature and case studies of networked business area, we have found...

Abstract
Emission control, especially Carbon Monoxides (CO) as one of the major by-products of combustion processes, is one of the most serious challenges in burning waste-gases with high amounts of humidity and Carbon Monoxide. We investigated an oil waste-gas incinerator serving to a bitumen production line located in Pasargad Oil Company, Shazand, Arak, Iran. The aforementioned incinerator was criticized seriously for its high CO emissions. We were requested to find a solution to reduce the undesirable CO emission from that. Following the environmental standards, there is an upper limit of 150 ppm for the CO produced by an industrial waste oil incinerator. To present an inclusive solution for such...
