Nonlinear Performance of 3-D Steel Structures by Scaled Nonlinear Dynamic Procedure

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hashemian, Behdad (Author) ; Mofid, Masoud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
It is well known that the most rigorous method to assess the performance and to predict the seismic demands of a structure subjected to earthquake is nonlinear time history analysis. However, this technique is accompanied by complexities and difficulties in evaluating the seismic demands of structures and requires superior knowledge and skill. As a result, in recent years, nonlinear static analysis has been proposed in performance based design procedures. One of the primary assumptions of nonlinear static procedures is that the behavior of a structure with multiple degrees of freedom (MDOF) subjected to seismic ground motion can be estimated from the response of an oscillator with a single...

On the Dynamic Response of Funicular Shells and Evaluation of the Behavior Factor

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Kadivar, Amin (Author) ; Mofid, Masoud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Dynamic behavior of space structures are of great complexities. On the event of severe earthquake these structures exhibit high resistance and on the other hand, their high rigidity and small deformation makes it necessary to pay attention to their dynamic behavior, especially when combined with other types of structural systems. Also due to lack of sufficient codes and references, their dynamic behavior is still unknown to a great extend. Among these kinds of structures, reinforced concrete double curvature shells, and especially funicular shells, are much more important than others. In this thesis, dynamic response of these kind of structures, especially reinforced concrete domes, in...

Parametric Study for a Type of Steel Bracing System (Chevron Knee Bracing)on Simple RC Frames

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Piroozan, Arash (Author) ; Mofid, Masoud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this research, a structural lateral bracing system called ‘Chevron Knee Bracing’ (CKB) on reinforced frames is investigated. This new form of framing system is constructed through the knee and the diagonal brace elements. The diagonal brace component provides the required level of lateral stiffness and stays in the elastic range without buckling at any time. However, the knee part is a fuse-like component that dissipates energy by the formation of plastic flexural and/or shear hinges at its ends and mid-span, when the building is subjected to severe lateral loads. For this purpose, first, by elastic studying of the system, three new and practical parameters are established. Then, the best...

On the Parametric Analysis of Structural Response of Base Plate Connections through FEM

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Khodaei, Sina (Author) ; Mofid, Masoud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Base plate is one of the important and sensitive elements of a structure which roles as a connector of force and moment in column to foundation joint and prevents from stress concentration in the joint area. As until now there has been several numerical and experimental researches conducted about base plate connections, but in practice for design, base plate is considered as a cantilever beam which undertakes compressive force and bending moment. In this method of design many important factors such as separation and deflection of base plate, interaction of base plate with bolts and foundation aren’t taken into consideration. Therefore there is an urgent need to design base plates considering...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Baghi, Alireza (Author) ; Mofid, Masoud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The Overstrength, Ductility and the Response Modification Factor (R) for 70 steel X-braced , Inverted-V-Braced and Offcenter Bracing System frames were evaluated by performing pushover analysis of model structure with various stories (3,6,9,12&15 story) and span length (4,6&8 meter). Some result were compared with those from nonlinear dynamic analysis. According to the analysis result the R factors obtained from nonlinear dynamic analysis are 15% more than obtained from pushover analysis and R factors computed from pushover analysis were generally smaller than the values given in the design codes. R factors in Irregular structure in height are about 90% of R values in regular structure in...

Quantification of Seismic Performance Factors of Chevron Knee Bracing Systems

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Farahi, Mojtaba (Author) ; Mofid, Masoud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
On the ground, it is necessary to have the values of Response Modification Factor R, Over-strength Factor Ω0, and Deflection Amplification Factor Cd to design seismic-force-resisting systems according to design and loading codes. This study is intended to evaluate these factors for a structural lateral bracing system called Chevron Knee Bracing (CKB). In this type of bracing, the knee elements help the system to dissipate energy through the formation of plastic flexural and/or shear hinges within the presented bracing system. The ap- proach used in this study is according to FEMA P695 based on low probabili- ty of structural collapse and involves nonlinear static and dynamic analyses....

Parametric Evaluation of the Y- Shaped Bracing Frame and Introducing a New Method for Design

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Sedaghati, Parshan (Author) ; Mofid, Masoud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
This paper investigates the behavior of the Y-shaped bracing system. Because of the special type of eccentricity in this system, the behavior of the frame is strongly dependent on the geometrical changes of the braces. So that even in the elastic region, it shows the geometrically nonlinear behavior. The amount of eccentricity is very effective on the nonlinear behavior of the frame. Also the ratio of cross sections of the bracing members has a very important impact on the expected performance of the frame. The results show that this system tolerates large displacements, and can act like a base isolation system. Firstly, using a two-dimensional accurate modeling related to the geometrical...

On The Behavior of Low-Rise, Irregular, Dual Structures

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Khazaei, Siamak (Author) ; Mofid, Masoud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The Response modification factor R represents the behavior of the structure such as ductility, overstrength and the inherent redundancy. This factor shall be defined according to the type of lateral force resisting system. However, there are some complexities and/or uncertainties in codes related to the R factor according to the height, form of irregularities and structural systems. Therefore, from the scientific point of view as well as reliability, it is very clear that the R factor cannot be similar for all kinds of structures, categorized as a specific group. In this investigation, assuming a low-rise, vertically irregular structure with a heliport which has a dual structural system...

Optimum Locations of Outrigger System for Earthquakes

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Sajjady, Reza (Author) ; Mofid, Masoud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Tall building development has been rapidly increasing world wide introducing new challenges that need to be met through engineering judgment. In modern tall buildings, lateral loads induced by wind or earthquake are often resisted by a system of coupled shear walls. But when the building increases in height, the stiffness of the structure becomes more important and introduction of outrigger beams between the shear walls and external columns is often used to provide sufficient lateral stiffness to the structure. In general, earthquake ground motion can occur anywhere in the world and the risk associated with tall buildings, especially under severe earthquakes,...

Parametric Investigation and Finite Element Modeling of an Innovative Semi-Rigid Beam to Column Connection under Monotonic Loading

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ghaffari, Yousef (Author) ; Mofid, Masoud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
This thesis presents the development of a Finite Element Model (FEM) for a new type of Beam-Column Semi-Rigid steel connection. This connection consists of a steel semi cylinder connected to a plate and inserted on the top and bottom of the beam connecting it to the column by welding. It seems that changing the geometry of the semi cylinders and their weld lengths can have a great influence on the rigidity or flexibility of the connection. Therefore, meaningful categories of the connection with different semi cylinder geometries and weld lengths have been modeled and investigated by means of a Finite Element Modeling software ABAQUS, and their moment-rotation curves were driven. Also the...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hooshmandi, Matin (Author) ; Mofid, Masoud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In the present study it was intended to evaluate the seismic performance of multi-story EBF structures for designing. When adopting this method, parametric studies are carried out based on the nonlinear performance of such systems whiting the framework of nonlinear static and dynamic analyses. In lines with seismic strengthening of such structures, this study tries to reassess the performance of these systems through increasing ductility and replacing bracing frames with energy damper and special seismic systems. As a result, a fuse type performance is created to protect the other elements of the structure. This study describes the seismic strengthening of this type of dampers using simple...

Quantification Of Seismic Performance Factors Of Steel Plate Shear Wall Systems

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Kouhi, Zahra (Author) ; Mofid, Masoud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The AISC Seismic Design Provisions now include capacity design requirements for steel plate shear walls, which consist of thin web plates that infill frames of steel beams, denoted horizontal boundary elements)HBEs), and columns, denoted vertical boundary elements (VBEs). The thin unstiffened web plates are expected to buckle in shear at low load levels and develop tension field action, providing ductility and energy dissipation through tension yielding of the web plate. HBEs are designed for stiffness and strength requirements and are expected to anchor the tension field formation in the web plates. VBEs are designed for yielding of web plates and plastic hinge formation at the ends of the...

Investigating the Effect of Reinforced Concrete Wall Positioning, with Irregular Plans

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hamidzadeh, Mohammad (Author) ; Mofid, Masoud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Previously, numerous studies were carried out on the shear walls and important information are available in various fields, including wall design with various sections, wall design in areas with high seismicity risk, issues related to the reinforcement of boundary element and etc. In the design codes of reinforced concrete structures in the field of seismic design, some criteria for reinforcement of boundary element in the walls were conducted, but these codes do not answer to designers to arrange the wall with or without eccentricity with respect to column or the effect of separation of wall from the column. Due to the fact that we have a powerful software such as ETABS, design of shear...

To achieve this, three–dimensional 5-, 8-, 12-story steel buildings models with regular and irregular plan floors were built in OpenSees software and subjected to nonlinear static (pushover) and nonlinear incremental dynamic analysis (IDA) under 22 ground motion records. The performance of each model was then examined by calculation of three seismic design parameters: response modification (R), structural over strength (Ω), and structural ductility...

Numerical Investigation of Stiffened Beam-Only Connected Steel Plate Shear Walls

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Meghdadi, Zeinab (Author) ; Mofid, Masoud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
This study aims for investigating a novel type of Steel Plate Shear Wall (SPSW) system in which the plate to boundary column connections are eliminated and the plate is reinforced with side, horizontal or cross stiffeners. SPSWs are one of the best lateral load resisting systems specially in high-rise buildings which makes it to be widely used in modern construction projects. SPSW system was first used in Japan and United States and found its way to other countries through the next years. In contrary to United States, stiffened SPSWs are more popular in Japan as it is a high seismic area. Despite the numerous advantages of this system, the main drawback of SPSWs is the large column sections...

Extensive Comparison between Semi-rigid Connection and Investigation of a New Semi-rigid Steel Connection

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Gordan, Mahshid (Author) ; Mofid, Masoud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Steel structures are one of the most common structures in the world. One of the main parts of these structures is the connections, which are divided into three main categories of fixed, semi-rigid and joints, according to
the different criteria provided in the guidelines and codes. Perhaps the main challenge facing civil engineers has been designing efficient connections against lateral loads (seismic loads, wind loads). This issue has received more and more attention from designers due to the poor performance of the fasteners against lateral loads. Investigating and evaluating semi-rigid connections as one of the main part of steel structures against various loads, especially lateral...
