    Abstract
A low power analog to digital converter (ADC), based on a pipelining method employed in successive approximation register (SAR) architecture is presented. This structure is a two-stage pipeline SAR ADC with asymmetrical time interleaved (TI) channels, aimed to reach sampling rate as high as about threefold of a conventional SAR ADC while benefiting from its low power consumption and small area. Passive residue conversion without inter-stage amplifier and symphonic collaboration of stages are employed to design a low power, high speed, and accurate converter. In the proposed architecture, every signal sample experiences equal comparator offset during its conversion due to the applied novel...

Air–water flow is a complex and challenging subject in many engineering fields as well as hydraulic engineering; and discovery of its characteristics can help the engineers to predict and analyze a probable phenomenon. In the present paper, development of a device capable of measuring the flow velocity, air concentration, diameter and counts of bubbles in air–water flows is described. The heart of the present device is two resistive probes with a novel configuration. Being pressure and corrosion resistant and also having negligible resistivity in the flow are some of the unique features of the employed needles. Moreover, sampling frequency and time can be adjusted for the intended...

A Low-power clock generator with a wide frequency tuning range and low temperature variation: analysis and design

    , Article Journal of Circuits, Systems and Computers ; Volume 29, Issue 1 , 2020 Fazel, Z ; Shokrekhodaei, M ; Atarodi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
World Scientific Publishing Co. Pte Ltd  2020
    Abstract
This paper presents a quadrature-clock generator based on a novel low-power ring oscillator with a wide frequency tuning range and low temperature variations. The proposed ring oscillator consists of two differential delay cells with a new controllable capacitive load of an MOS transistor. The wide tuning range is achieved due to transistor utilization in different regions and considering its resistance not to narrow down the frequency range. Delay cells are biased with a minimum possible value of a proportion to absolute temperature current to decrease frequency variations to temperature while the power consumption is kept low. The validation of the proposed methods is proved by circuit...

    , Article Analog Integrated Circuits and Signal Processing ; 2021 ; 09251030 (ISSN) Fazel, Z ; Atarodi, M ; Sadughi, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Springer  2021
    Abstract
Due to wireless communication’s rapid growth, the need for low power integrated transceivers is increasing. The receiver power is a major limiting factor, and the radio frequency (RF) front-end is often its significant power consuming part. Therefore, system-level design in which the overall specifications are distributed among RF front-end building blocks such that the minimum total power is consumed is crucial. A complete system-level design method for a low power RF front-end is presented in this paper. For this purpose, the performance of each block is modeled by its current and overdrive voltage. An analytical associated with a search-based optimization technique is employed to derive...

Design and Implementation of a Low Power High Speed ADC Based on SAR ADC

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Fazel, Ziba (Author) ; Atarodi, Mojtaba (Supervisor) ; Saeedi, Saeed (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
ADC is one of the key functional blocks of any mixed signal system and therefore must be optimally designed concerning power, performance, resolution and silicon area. Among different architectures have been employed up to now, successive approximation register ADCs are known as the ones with lower power, more simplicity and lower sampling rate. Benefiting from scaling down the CMOS technology results in higher sampling rate and lower power SAR ADCs replacing other types of ADCs. To achieve the desired ADC performance, efforts are usually focused on the improvement of circuit techniques as well as on the introduction of new or combinational architectures based on SAR ADCs. This thesis aims...

    Abstract
Artifact removal is an essential part in electroencephalogram (EEG) recording and the raw EEG signals require preprocessing before feature extraction. In this work, we implemented three filtering methods and demonstrated their effects on the performance of different classifiers. Bandpass digital filtering, median filtering and facet method are three preprocessing approaches investigated in this paper. We used data set lib from the BCI competition 2003 for training and testing phase. Our accuracy varied between 80% and 96%. In our work, we demonstrated that the problems of choosing the classifier and preprocessing methods are not independent of each other. Two of our approaches could achieve...

    Abstract
One of the roles of a Natural Language Processing (NLP) model in Continuous Speech Recognition (CSR) systems is to find the best sentence hypothesis by ranking all n-best sentences according to the grammar. This paper describes a robust parsing algorithm for Spoken Language Recognition (SLR) which utilizes a technique that improves the efficiency of parsing. This technique integrates grammatical and statistical approaches, and by using a best-first parsing strategy improves the accuracy of recognition. Preliminary experimental results using a Persian continuous speech recognition system show effective improvements in accuracy with little change in recognition time. The word error rate was...

Experimental investigation in pool boiling heat transfer of pure/binary mixtures and heat transfer correlations

    , Article Iranian Journal of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering ; Volume 27, Issue 3 , September and October , 2008 , Pages 135-150 ; 10219986 (ISSN) Alavi Fazel, S. A ; Jamialahmadi, M ; Safekordi, A. A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Nucleate pool boiling heat transfer coefficient have been experimentally measured on a horizontal rod heater for various liquid binary mixtures. Measurements are based on more than three hundred data points on a wide range of concentrations and heat fluxes. In this investigation, it has been confirmed that the heat transfer coefficient in boiling solutions are regularly less than those in pure component liquids with same physical properties. Several reasons should be responsible for this phenomenon, but mainly it could be related to preferential evaporation of the more volatile component(s) during bubble formation. In this article, the performances of major existing correlations to the...

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 19, Issue 3 , 2012 , Pages 902-911 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Fazel Zarandi, M. H ; Davari, S ; Haddad Sisakht, S. A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
This paper addresses the multiple allocation hub set-covering problem considering backup coverage and mandatory dispersion of hubs. In the context of this paper, it has been assumed that a flow is covered if there are at least Q possible routes to satisfy its demand within a time bound. Moreover, there is a lower limit for the distance between hubs in order to provide a degree of dispersion in the solution. Mathematical formulation of this problem is given, which has O( n2) variables and constraints. Computational experiments carried out on the well-known CAB dataset give useful insights concerning model behavior and its sensitivity to parameters

The large scale maximal covering location problem

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 18, Issue 6 , December , 2011 , Pages 1564-1570 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Fazel Zarandi, M. H ; Davari, S ; Haddad Sisakht, S. A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
The maximal covering location problem (MCLP) is a challenging problem with numerous applications in practice. Previous publications in the area of MCLP proposed models and presented solution methodologies to solve this problem with up to 900 nodes. Due to the fact that in real-life applications, the number of nodes could be much higher, this paper presents a customized Genetic Algorithm (GA) to solve MCLP instances, with up to 2500 nodes. Results show that the proposed approach is capable of solving problems with a fair amount of exactness. In order to fine-tune the algorithm, Tukey's Least Significant Difference (LSD) tests are employed on a set of test problems

    Abstract
In the present study, the behavior of fin pile under lateral loading was investigated by ABAQUS software. First, the generated model was verified against an available experimental small-scale test in the literature. Having conducted verification, a study was carried out on the fin pile dimensions under lateral loading. Different parameters, such as pile diameter, fin’s length, and width, were studied. Moreover, a study on the fin’s aspect ratio by setting fin’s area constant was conducted, and then, optimum fin’s ratio was obtained. The results indicated that both fin’s length and width could improve pile efficiency under lateral loading, yet fin’s length had a more critical impact, and...
