Abstract
The main focus of this project is to define necessary technologies in design and production of a high altitude airship and provide a roadmap that show how appropriate actions can be conducted toward technology, product and market in the next ten years in Iran. Here, we have surveyed the role of design parameters in the performance of high altitude airship. In the sequel according to the specific final mission, the required technologies and infrastructures are defined. The case of airship technology acquisition for Iran basically can be adapted to the “Technology Catchup”. Hence, we propose a new methodology to provide a technology roadmap with the “technology catchup” approach, then develop...
An optimization-based approach to control of robotic manipulators
, Article Proceedings - IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation, 12 May 2009 through 17 May 2009, Kobe ; 2009 , Pages 3347-3352 ; 10504729 (ISSN); 9781424427895 (ISBN) ; Karimi-Ghartemani, M ; Namvar, M ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
This paper proposes a method to suboptimally tune the control parameters in a conventional Lyapunov-Based method which shares the same concept of control design with sliding mode approach as applied to the robot manipulators. Optimal tuning of such parameters involves handling of nonlinearities in system dynamics and cost functions, which makes the problem challenging. We propose a step-by-step numerical algorithm that select suboptimal parameters while ensuring system stability. The controller is, suboptimal due to the facts that (1) it is in the form of a Slotine-type sliding mode control, (2) the numerical recursive algorithm might fall into a local minimum, and (3) the controller...

Abstract
In this paper, a novel design approach for determination of the optimal Fractional Order PID (FOPID) controllers, using the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) method is presented. Fractional calculus can provides good performance and robustness for FOPID controllers in comparison with the conventional PID and even other types of classical controllers, because of the arbitrary order of fractional calculus presented in this scheme. This paper demonstrates in details how to employ the PSO method to search efficiently for the optimal FOPID controller parameters in SISO and MIMO systems. The proposed approach is applied to an electromagnetic suspension system as an example to illustrate the design...
Analysis and Study the Effect of Knowledge Management Implementation on Productivity Case Study: Tehran Regional Electric Company
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Mostafavi, Mostafa (Supervisor)
Abstract
The successful development and implementation of a knowledge management system requires principles and instructions compatible with the organization. In the absence of essential and domestic components of a given organization, the process of knowledge management implementation will fail to be successfully completed. There are now various models for the implementation of knowledge management; however, these models only recommend general strategic guidelines, hardly offering any specific strategic plans as to how organizations can successfully and effectively implement knowledge management. Since the promotion of productivity is the ultimate goal of knowledge management, the present research...
Coordinated Scheduling of Power and Natural Gas Systems Considering Demand Uncertainty
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Rafiee, Majid (Supervisor)
Abstract
The everyday increasing electricity consumption of household and industrial sectors across the world, and also the limited generation capacity and fuel supplies has led electricity companies, whether in private or government sectors, to focus deliberately on power generation planning, its costs, risks and constraints Because of many reasons including high efficiency, low cost of capital investment, expeditious permitting, and operation flexibility of gas-fired generating units, electricity companies prefer them to old ones like coal-fired or oil-fired generating units. Thus natural gas has gained a significant share in the portfolio of electricity generation fuel resources, and it is...
Statistical Characterization of Kerr Nonlinearity in Optical Fiber and Its Corresponding Applications
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Salehi, Javad (Supervisor)
Abstract
Optical fibers with the high amount of nonlinearity, or length such as highly nonlinear fibers (HNLF) and long optical transmission lines could not be simply modeled as linear systems; and, in fact, the propagation of signal through these types of mediums is governed by the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE). From the statistical point of view, the interaction between signal, noise, and Kerr nonlinearity along the fiber leads to an output random process that is not well studied in the literatures and the exploration in this area may play an important role in solving different practical problems. In order to investigate the aforementioned output random process, this thesis obtains the most...

Abstract
This paper describes a novel Direct Torque Control (DTC) method for adjustable speed Doubly-Fed Induction Machine (DFIM) drives which is supplied by a two-level Space Vector Modulation (SVM) voltage source inverter (DTC-SVM) in the rotor circuit. The inverter reference voltage vector is obtained by using input-output feedback linearization control and a DFIM model in the stator a-b axes reference frame with stator currents and rotor fluxes as state variables. Moreover, to make this nonlinear controller stable and robust to most varying electrical parameter uncertainties, a two layer recurrent Artificial Neural Network (ANN) is used to estimate a certain function which shows the machine...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Frounchi, Masoud (Supervisor) ; Mollaabasi, Payam (Co-Supervisor)
Abstract
In the past decades, hydrogels have been used as an adsorbent with high potential to remove pollutants in water. Hydrogels are three-dimensional polymer networks that have the ability to absorb and store water and water-soluble compounds due to the presence of hydrophilic functional groups in their structure. Different particles with unique characteristics can be used to increase the efficiency of hydrogel absorption. Based on the type of pollutant, hydrogels are divided into three different forms, including particles, films and nanocomposites. In this research, the absorption effect of metal cations as well as the absorption kinetics of polyvinyl pyrrolidine-based hydrogels, sodium...

Abstract
Following Gorokhovsky and Lott and using an extension of the b-pseudodifferential calculus of Melrose, we give a formula for the Chern character of the Dirac index class of a longitudinal Dirac type operators on a foliated manifold with boundary. For this purpose we use the Bismut local index formula in the context of noncommutative geometry. This paper uses heavily the methods and technical results developed by E. Leichtnam and P. Piazza

Abstract
Objective(s): Multiple sclerosis (MS) is considered as a chronic type of an inflammatory disease characterized by loss of myelin of CNS. Recent evidence indicates that Interleukin 17 (IL-17)-producing T helper cells (Th17 cells) population are increased and regulatory T cells (Treg cells) are decreased in MS. Despite extensive research in understanding the mechanism of Th17 and Treg differentiation, the role of microRNAs in MS is not completely understood. Thereby, as a step closer, we analyzed the expression profile of miR-9-5p and miR-106a-5p, and protein level of retinoic acid receptor (RAR)-related orphan receptor C (RORC; Th17 master transcription factor) as direct target of miR-106a-5p...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Khodaygan, Saeed (Supervisor)
Abstract
Fatigue life prediction of a mechanical part is one of issues which a group of engineers are engaged with it and always they try to design the parts with the maximum of lifetime. Although many researches have been done in this field but yet we can see that predicted life are different from that happens in the reality because there are some uncertainties in the phenomena. Our effort in this project is creating an algorithm design so that the parts are designed by it, have the maximum fatigue life and the minimum uncertainty in prediction. In this project we have considered geometrical, material and random loading uncertainties as error resources. Older methods those are presented in this...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Bozorgmehry Bozarjomehry, Ramin (Supervisor) ; Setoodeh, Payam (Co-Supervisor)
Abstract
In this project, modeling, simulation, and control of the Saccharomyces Cerevisiae were studied. In the first section, simulation and control of a structural model of saccharomyces Cerevisiae were performed. Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC) as a model-independent controller and Global Linearization Controller (GLC) as a model-based controller were designed. Additionally, two types of Kalman filters were designed to predict all states of the structural model: 1-Extended Kalman Filter (EKF), 2- Unscented Kalman Filter (UKF). As a concise explanation, the control action of the GLC is a function of all states of the model, and since that measuring all metabolites is not practical, the EKF and UKF...

Abstract
Three newly synthesized room temperature ionic liquids containing molybdate anion, [DMIm][MoO 2(NCS) 4], [RPy][MoO 2(NCS) 4] (R = butyl or decyl), and previously reported [BMIm][MoO 2(NCS) 4] were used as catalysts for the reduction of sulfoxides. For facilitating the recyclability of the catalysts, the ionic liquids [RMIm][PF 6] and [RPy][PF 6] (RMIm = 1-n-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium, RPy = 1-n-alkylpyridinium) were applied as ionic solvents and toluene is used as solvent for the organic phase. Molybdenum salts immobilized in RTILs constituted a reusable and efficient heterogeneous catalyst system. A maximum conversion (>99%) was achieved for reduction of diphenyl sulfoxide to diphenyl...

Abstract
Two room temperature liquid salts containing molybdenum(VI), [BMIM] 2[MoO2(NCS)4] (1) and [DMIM] 2[MoO2(NCS)4] (2), were immobilized on ionic liquid-modified silica leading to materials which showed notable catalytic activity for the reduction of sulfoxides into sulfides with triphenylphosphine (PPh3). The molybdenum liquid salts immobilized on the supported ionic liquid phase could be reused at least for three catalytic cycles without significant loss of activity
Epoxidation of olefins catalyzed by some cis-dioxomolybdenum(VI)-tridentate schiff base complexes with tert-butyl hydroperoxide
, Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 17, Issue 2 C , 2010 , Pages 131-138 ; 10263098 (ISSN) ; Ghazali Esfahani, S ; Sharif University of Technology
2010
Abstract
Some cis-dioxomolybdenum (VI) complexes with tridentate Schiff base ligands derived from salicylaldehyde and aminophenols, aminoalcohol or o-aminobenzenethiol were examined as catalysts for epoxidation of different aliphatic and aromatic olefins, with tert-butyl hydroperoxide as oxidant. All complexes exhibited high activity and selectivity for epoxidation of aliphatic substrates during a short time period (95% conversion of cyclooctene after 30 min). The epoxide yield increased with the nucleophilic character of olefin. The catalysts activation strongly depends on the reaction temperature and nature of the solvent. Epoxidation of olefins by these catalysts is inhibited by ligands or...

Abstract
Zirconia Toughened Alumina (ZTA) Nanocomposites were prepared using Nano sized Zirconia (ZrO2) powders doped with 3% mol of yttria (Y 2O3) nanopowders. Diffusion of α-alumina (Al 2O3) nanoparticles as well as yttria into the Zirconia lattice network drives monoclinic - tetragonal martensitic transformation. Zirconia toughened alumina (ZTA) composites containing different amount of partially stabilized Zirconia (PSZ) 5, 10, 15 and 20% mol, were prepared via wet mixing and axial pressing. After sintering at different temperatures,1450, 1550 and 1650 °C, phase change in the samples were monitored. X-ray diffraction patterns showed that at constant composition, tetragonal zirconia was increased...
